The days are already getting shorter and colder, making it a great time to pick up a new indoor activity.
This winter, everyone in Chilliwack has the opportunity to stay active, healthy and connected. Whether
you’re trying a new indoor activity or pursuing an old favourite, I encourage you to stay active and healthy
with one of the programs within this Leisure Guide.
On behalf of Chilliwack City Council, I would like to thank our many partners that help make Chilliwack so
special. This Leisure Guide is the result of partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association
of Community Programmers, and School District No. 33, who assist in the support of the Community
School Associations. Each contributor to the Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively
addresses the needs and interests of the residents in our community. Likewise, many of our facilities are
operated by an independent contractor with the expertise and knowledge best suited for daily operations.
They help shape the recreational programming we all enjoy.
Please take a moment to read through this guide, see what it has to offer and take advantage of all the
amazing ways you can get involved. You can visit us online at www.chilliwack.com to keep up to date on
what’s happening in the community, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Sincerely,
Mayor Sharon Gaetz

The Parks, Recreation & Culture
Department is divided into three
different divisions: Administration,
Civic Facilities and Parks with
each division overseeing specific
components of the department.
Administration is responsible for
facility rentals and the allocation
to user groups of over 58 sports
fields and 95 ball diamonds which
are owned and operated by either
the City of Chilliwack or School
District #33. This division acts
as a liaison for the Community
School programs as well as other
community program and special
event providers.
With culture being an integral
part of the Department’s portfolio,
the Administration Division also
provides support to many of the
community’s cultural program
providers in particular the
Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre
Society.
Marketing and promotion of
the Department falls under the
mandate of the Administrative
Division. It is also where you can
inquire into other department
initiatives such as mobile vending,
street entertainment and the Park
Bench Donations/Recognition
Program.
The Civic Facilities Division
oversees the maintenance and
direct operations of a vast number
of facilities, some being; six fire
halls, Evergreen Hall, the new
Cultural Centre, the Museum/
Archives, all park washrooms,
Twin Rinks, Great Blue Heron
Nature Reserve, the two Leisure
Centres, Rotary Pool, the three
Libraries, the RCMP building and
Heritage Park just to name a few.
This division of Parks, Recreation
and Culture also oversee several
of the service and operating
agreements between the City
of Chilliwack and contracted
operators of several of our Civic
properties.
As well Civic Facilities is
involved in many of the City’s
capital building projects whether
retrofitting an existing facility or
the building of a new one.
Our Parks Division is one of the
reasons Chilliwack is regarded
as one of the most beautiful
communities in the lower
mainland. The maintenance
of the City’s community green
spaces which includes 102
parks, 14 community parks,
19 neighborhood and 68 subneighborhood parks fall under
the umbrella of this division. They
also administer the maintenance
and development of over 24 trails
totaling approximately 70km.
This division is also responsible
for the designing, building and
maintaining of the community
playgrounds and skate parks. If
you have enjoyed incorporating
the Jinkerson and Weeden stairs
into your wellness program you
can thank the Parks Division. It
was their vision and hard work
that brought these gems to
fruition.

Parks & Trails
Top Five Dog Tips for
Local Parks and Trails
License Your Dog
A license isn’t just a fashion accessory for
your beloved pooch, it helps identify your
dog if it gets lost.
Leash
Make sure your pet is under control.
Whereas you may be comfortable
around your pet, others may not be. An
over excited or aggressive animal can
increase others discomfort or fear.
Unleash
The City of Chilliwack has off-leash
locations for your dog to run freely.
They are:
South Chilliwack – The former Canadian
Forces Base at Nord Road
North Chilliwack – Island 22 at Cartmell
Road
When visiting the off-leash areas please
keep toys and snacks off site and remain
on site with your pet at all times.
Don’t forget to leash your pet on your way
to or when leaving the off-leash area
Pick-Up
Remember to pick up anything your dog
has left behind.
Waterfowl in Parks
Digging
Dogs love to dig however we ask that
they not do so in our parks or along our
trails.
Chilliwack’s
Water Spray Parks
The City of Chilliwack has two water
spray parks available for the public’s
enjoyment. The parks are located at the
Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre and at
the Cheam Centre in Garrison Crossing.
Each of these park areas also provide
picnic space and leisure opportunities for
young and old to participate in.

WINTER/SPRING 2014 CHILLIWACK LEISURE GUIDE
While it is enjoyable to feed the
waterfowl, it is detrimental to them and
our environment and creates numerous
problems such as:
• Disturbs natural migration patterns
leading to a high concentration of birds
• Overcrowding can lead to disease and
fighting amongst the population
• Feeding destroys the bird natural ability to
forage and find food for themselves
• Deprives the birds of essential nutrients
• It reduces useable areas due to large
amount of feces and aggressive fowl
Feeding waterfowl is also illegal and
can result in a fine of up to $2000
(Bylaw #2974).
Please help us control the waterfowl
population; and remember, real geese do
not eat bread.

Exhibition Artificial
Turf Field
To accommodate the future need of
sports fields in our growing community,
the Exhibition Field and Grandstands
were upgraded into a high-end artificial
turf facility this year. The construction
began in June 2013 and was completed
in September. The Grand Opening took
place on October 19 and was attended
by many people in the community.
The updates for the Exhibition grounds
include a large all-weather game field
with CFL, American Football, and soccer
lines to accommodate many sports
groups, a practice turf field the size of
half a field located north of the game
field thanks to a generous donation from
the Chilliwack FC, as well as a warmup area west of the game field that
was donated by AstroTurf Canada, the
company that supplied and installed the
turf. The upgrade to the Grandstands and
washrooms included heat installation in
the washrooms so they could be used all
year long, as well as insulation and railing
installation in the Grandstands.
The new artificial turf field has some
appealing features including;
• supports 6x more playing time than
grass fields,
• no resting periods necessary,
• no closures due to weather unless there
is standing snow on the field,
• maintenance costs are similar to
premier grass fields,
• able to lessen environmental impact by
using recycled tires as part of the infill
material thanks to funding from the Tire
Stewardship of BC, and lastly,
• more hours of play will give the grass
fields a rest.
The new field has been kept busy since
it opened with weeknight soccer and
football, soccer games all day Saturday
including mini-ball games that are able
to be held 4 at a time on the new field,
and various games for both youth and
adult groups throughout the weekend.
There has also been some special events
hosted at the new Exhibition Grounds
including a Homecoming Game for G.W.
Graham’s football team held on October
11 that drew in a large crowd as well as
UFV Cascades Men’s and Women’s
Soccer games.
Comparing Exhibition’s field usage from
last season to this season (AugustMarch), the field has already gone from
384 hours of play last year, to 1273 hours
of play plus 205 hours of ½ field bookings
this year. That means the field usage has
increased almost 4x since it has been
upgraded to turf.

Swimming Lesson
Descriptions
Parent & Tot (6 – 35 months)
In this program we introduce your child to
water, build their water confidence, and
educate you as the parent on pertinent
water safety. Our program consists of
singing songs and playing interactive
games, through fun group activities we will
appeal to your child’s curiosity and desire
for play, while we increase their comfort
in and under the water. In addition, we
will promote balance and movement; and
begin swim skill acquisition.
Preschool 1 (Ages 3 – 5)
In this beginner level, all skills are
assisted by the instructor. Using games
and activities, swimmers will learn to
submerge, open their eyes under water,
develop basic floats, glides and kick.
Preschool 2 – 3 (Ages 3 – 5)
Swimmers will further develop unassisted
floats, glides, and kicking. They will learn
to swim up to 10 metres, and perform
skills in deep water.
Preschool 4 – 5 (Ages 3 – 5)
Swimmers will increase their swimming
distance to 20 metres, and their surface
support to 20 seconds. They will learn the
fundamentals of front crawl, back swim and
be introduced to whip kick. The majority of
this class is taught in deep water.
Swim Kids 1 – 2 (Ages 6+)
This entry level program provides an
orientation to safety around the water and
pool area. Floats and glides with kick are
introduced. Children build their endurance
using flutter kick with assisted glides.
Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+)
These levels build the child’s skill in front
and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip
kick. They are taught to be water safe by
understanding their own limits and learning
boating skills. Endurance is achieved by
building strength in the flutter kick and
dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim.
Swim Kids 6 – 7
Front and back crawl continue to be
refined. Elementary backstroke and whip
kick on the front are introduced. Ice
safety, choking, and elementary rescue
of others with throwing assists are taught.
Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim.
Swim Kids 8 – 10
Breaststroke and scissor kick are
introduced, and all strokes continue to
be refined. Surface dives, rescues from
ice, and rescue breathing are taught.
They learn about fitness and making wise
choices. Endurance is built using dolphin
kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

CVAA Members
December 19 - January 18 2014
This traditional annual “Winter Season” show has become a much-anticipated popular
exhibit with CVAA members and the community alike. The topic has remained the same
for the past three years but participating artists and their individual images are as new
and vibrant as ever and will include images and memories from artists who spend the
winter months in warmer climes.

with different outcomes. Pierre Tremblay has focused on playing with the conventions of
portraiture. Playful extremes in both colours and composition play an important role in

Taking Action NOW!
For the Health of Your Community.
Children and Youth
Framed by a solution oriented,
evidenced-based health message,
Live 5-2-1-0, the Healthy
Kids Initiative was launched in
December 2012. We are engaging
the community and leveraging the
wonderful organizations, services,
and programs already underway
in Chilliwack, to work towards a
future where the healthy choice, is
the easy choice for our children.
Community
Health
Our goal is that the citizens of
Chilliwack to Boston Bar are
inspired, educated and engaged
in taking responsibility for their
own health and the health of
their communities. By working with
businesses and organizations, we
strive to make the healthy choice, the
easy choice, for everyone.
Hospital Initiatives
Working with our local doctors
through the Chilliwack Division
of Family Practice, and with
Chilliwack General Hospital and
Fraser Health Authority, we
are identifying priorities
and initiatives to enhance
patient care and services
at our local hospital. Recent
donations include the purchase
of equipment for the Primary
Care Seniors Clinic located in
Chilliwack General Hospital.
Seniors
In an age-friendly community seniors are
supported to live healthy, active,
socially engaged, independent
lives. We recognize that
seniors are valuable assets to
our communities and want to
ensure that they are inspired to
do so. To accomplish this we are
engaging with seniors and with
organizations that work with
seniors to identify priorities
and initiatives.

as a busy family can be
challenging. At the Chilliwack
Family YMCA, we not only

healthy lifestyle. This means
our memberships include
free drop-in programs and

at convenient times of day

Aquatics
We believe every child should learn to
swim and be safe in and around the
water. That’s why YMCA memberships
include continuous swim lessons that
are convenient and allow children to
progress at their own pace.
• We help kids jump in, have fun, learn
to swim and grow their confidence.
• Our programs—from Bobbers to
Stars—give your kids the skills
needed for a lifetime of safe fun in the
water.
• Membership makes it easy for
families to be active together with
recreational swimming and family
swimming at convenient times.
• Membership includes all-day access
to Aquafit and lane swimming.
• For those 16 and older who have
their Bronze Cross, NLS or Star
6 accreditation already, we offer a
course in how to become a YMCA
Swim Instructor.
MEND - Mind, Exercise,
Nutrition... Do It!
Trying to maintain a healthy, active
lifestyle can be challenging. With
school, an abundance of screen
time and a busy family life, kids are
spending less time being active and
as a result, many are above a healthy
weight.
Helping kids grow up strong and
healthy is why the YMCA exists.
That’s why we offer MEND, a
provincially funded program that
empowers children and families to
become fitter and healthier.
This free and fun 10-week program
supports children ages 7-13 who are
above a healthy body weight to adopt
a healthy lifestyle. Parents/caregivers
join their children in each session to
learn about how to choose healthier
foods and spend more time being
physically active.

WINTER/SPRING 2014 CHILLIWACK LEISURE GUIDE
Children
Parents with young kids are tight
on time and energy. That’s why we
focus on making our programs
easy to fit into your schedule, while
giving you the chance to exercise
and recharge.
Whether you’re playing games
together on Family Night, dropping in
for a swim, exposing your child to new
activities or each finding your own way
to get fit, rest assured that you are
growing together as a family at the Y.
Activities for children include:
• Swim Lessons
• Active Play
• Creative Play
• Active Games
• Gymnastics
• Tumble Time
• Freak Out Friday
Licensed Child Care
Choosing a child care provider is a
big decision. You want your child
to feel at home, learn, grow and
have fun in an environment that is
welcoming, safe and stimulating.
And most of all you want caring
and supportive caregivers who
understand what makes your child
special.
Through both our early years and
before and after school licensed
programs, kids learn values and
positive behaviours in a supportive
environment. Children have the
opportunity to be active, have fun and
develop confidence. Plus, parents
get the peace of mind knowing that
children are active and learning while
spending time with friends and positive
adult role models.
We offer programs for the following
ages:
• Infant and toddler (0-36 months)
• 3-5 year olds
• Preschool
• 5-12 year olds (before and after
school)

Youth
Studies show that today’s youth
feel alone. The Y believes it doesn’t
have to be this way. That’s why
we are committed to keeping
youth engaged and active with
opportunities to participate, learn,
grow and lead.

(YLD) helps youth build self-esteem,
lifelong friendships and develop strong

YMCA Strong Kids
Campaign
Every kid deserves a chance. What
do you think about a child’s need to
get a good start in life? The YMCA
Strong Kids campaign is our way of
raising the funds needed to ensure
children and families can live healthier
lives, right from the start. To donate, visit
