Ken Nentwig/CANARM Executive Director
Rainwater Management
Ken Nentwig is a retired landscape architect and
educator, currently CANARM Governor, BC Jurisdiction.
He has recently developed the CANARM national
training and certification program, and is engaged in
expanding the CANARM-BC group and network among
practitioners, educators, suppliers.
This presentation will outline the process and approvals required for environmentally
sound and sustainable rainwater management system design.

Providing Support to the BC Onsite industry; Is it time for a
College of Practitioners?
John Rowse, J. Rowse Strategic Consulting, has been in the
wastewater business for over 20 years. John developed the
Sewerage System Regulation for the Ministry of Health and wrote
B.C.’s first Standard practice manual. John left government in 2006
to take the Executive Directors position at BCOSSA. .John runs a
successful consulting firm which provides services for the onsite
industry.

Closed-Loop Water & Energy Systems: the power of integrated
design
Mr. Lucey is a private consultant in Aquatic Ecology and Municipal
Watershed Management Planning with Aqua-Tex Scientific
Consulting Ltd., Kimberley, British Columbia.
Aqua-Tex specializes in the management of urban streams, public
drinking water watersheds, applied ecology and science education.
Mr. Lucey’s background includes 10 years in industry, including
construction, and 16 years with the Biology Department at the
University of Victoria, followed by 10 years as a private consulting
scientist. He holds undergraduate degrees in Marine Biology and
Natural Resource Management Geography, and a master’s degree in
Phycology (algae) and Aquatic Ecology.

The Application of the Principles of Hydrogeology:
What do hydrogeologists do?
Ineke Kalwij has over 18 years of professional experience combined
in surface water and groundwater through consulting, science
(academia), and applied research. Ineke owns and operates Kalwij
Water Dynamics, a consulting company which specializes in
hydrogeology, groundwater engineering and water management.

The primary focus of this presentation is on the role and responsibilities of hydrogeologists in the
context of groundwater supply and management, and land development.

Dr. John S. Richardson/UBC Department of Forest & Conservation Sciences,
Protecting the source of life at its source
His research addresses questions of ecology and management of
streams, riparian areas and with a broad interest in aquatic biology,
and particularly stream-riparian interactions.
He has published over 180 scientific articles, more than 133 of
them in international, peer-reviewed journals. Over 34 graduate
students, 11 post-doctoral fellows and 10 research assistants, as
well as dozens of undergraduate honours students, have studied in
his research team. He is on the editorial board of the Canadian
Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and was previously an
Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Ecology. He is and has
been a member of several endangered species recovery teams. He
is an associate of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies.

1. Rainwater Harvesting and Management: Implications of Supply and Storage*
This is an easy add-on to the onsite wastewater; Planner, Installer and Maintenance Provider current
business activities. New business opportunities in rainwater harvesting techniques and storm water
management. Add to your existing skill set and give your clients and customers this new and innovative
water management tool. With Ken Nentwig of CANARM
2. Drip Dispersal
Drip dispersal systems are the latest technique for wastewater discharge. Learn how to use this
inexpensive and time tested technique for systems on challenging sites that may have limited access or
other constraints that make conventional distribution techniques unsuitable. With Tim Wilson of Wilson’s
Tractor Services and Don MacRae of Pump Tech Inc.
3. Maintenance & Inspection*
Offering maintenance and inspection services to your clients will insure that your business is well
rounded. Inspection services can be used to identify wastewater system problems and protect clients
during real estate transactions. Maintenance is the key to wastewater system longevity and
performance. With Jeff Hay of BCOSSA
This course offers training for practitioners who want to obtain their Inspector or maintenance provider
registration.
