Our central idea was ‘T h e f o o d w e e a t i s p r o d u c e d i n m a n y p l a c e s! Whooping cough Whooping cough on the rise in 5-14 year olds. The number of children aged 5-14 years old catching whooping cough has increased dramatically in Victoria over the last four years. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly infectious disease causing a severe, persistent cough. Whooping cough is spread by coughs and sneezes from an infected person. While most children and adults eventually recover, often after weeks or months of illness and household disruption, there is a serious risk if infected people pass the disease to young babies. Around one in every 200 babies under six months of age who catch whooping cough will die. Some babies will suffer permanent disability from brain and lung damage. Family members, including siblings and parents, are the main source of whooping cough infection in babies. Timely immunisation offers the best chance of preventing the spread of whooping cough. Whooping cough vaccine is provided free for children at two, four and six months, at their fourth birthday, adolescents in Year 10 of secondary school and parents of newborn babies. The two month vaccine can be given early at six weeks to start protection earlier. Parents are urged to ensure their children are vaccinated on time and to consider their own whooping cough vaccination needs. Vaccination is recommended for all adults caring for or working with young children, including school teachers, as well as all health care workers. Parents should talk to their doctor or nurse if they have questions about the whooping cough vaccine. information search „whooping cough‟ on www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au For more Mens Health Presentation Thurs 8 Dec 2011 @ 280 Queen St, Altona BBQ 6pm - Presentation 7.15pm Talks Mark Tsaloumas: Dr Raj Sukandra Fracgp: Daniel Kuiper: · RSVP: 1 Dec 2011 ND Naturopath. We were taken around the school for a tour. We visited the games room where we played a couple of games; sitting in a circle and sharing our names and what we were interested in to the other kids. Then people had to remember what your name was, what you are interested in and they had to say „what the name was and what they were interested in. We also went to the library, art room, IPad room and the auditorium. At the art room we partnered up with someone from the Islamic school. We used oil pastels to decorate a piece of paper and once we had decorated it we used a paintbrush dipped in water to go over the oil pastels. Once that had dried, our partner from the Islamic school wrote our name in Arabic. Then we traced over the writing with glue and sprinkled glitter over our names and lastly we made a border. Some of the girls and boys went outside to play basketball with the other kids. The school that we visited was different to Seabrook Primary School because it was double story, they had more rooms, their play areas are smaller and they write in English as well as Arabic. As soon as we arrived all the people came to greet us. Some of the other people were just staring at us and didn‟t know who we were or what we were doing at their school. The school had a much different uniform and environment than Seabrook. The school that we visited payed for the bus to drive 4AL, to and from the school. In the IPad room, we played games such as maths games when you have to guess the shapes, we also had to find the missing letter in the word. Some of us were able to play on the electronic projector instead of the IPads. 4AL had a fantastic time at the school. By: Natasha Crawley, Taylor Burke & Karli Prendergast from 4AL! Thanks for your understanding Sonjia & Kaye Wolff LOST PROPERTY REMINDER Please check this week that all of your child’s clothing & plastic containers are clearly labelled (& that the labels have not faded). There is currently a large amount of lost property either unnamed or with labels so faded they are unreadable. It assists us to return items if your child’s full name is on the label. Please check the Lost Property, as there are two coats, shoes, & many items your child must need. All Lost Property will be collected on the 16th of December, 2011, washed & either sent to our Second Hand Uniform Shop or a local charity. Thank you. Wendy Treloar SENIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY NEWS In 6NL we have just finished our unit of inquiry about space exploration. As part of our summative assessment we had to come up with a design brief for transportation that could evacuate the Earth quickly if there was ever a need to. Here are some of our ideas. Design Brief I am going to design three space-shuttles that can evacuate earth very easily by taking everyone to Mars, this space shuttle contains 2 back up space-shuttles that have extra materials that can be used in a missed placed objects. The space-shuttles has 1 gym for people exercising, 1 play room for kids to play in, 1 movie theater for every one to be entertained, 1 huge diner that has a lot of food you can think of , many bedrooms that can fit 10 people in it . This space-shuttle contains bombs, and kind of weapons, safety equipments, there will also contain a rainforest and a zoo for pets to live in and animals to keep them protected. This space-shuttle goes to every single country as quickly as possible. People will eat and breathe like a normal people at home, but the one thing different thing is they can‟t go outside unless they wear a protective garment. The space-shuttle will have a captain; the captain is in charge of everything and keeps an eye out of people, they will also have a pilot, janitor, people en-charge of the library, forest and zoo etc. I am going to design a tube that travels from each continent to the moon. It works by a tube that blows and sucks to the moon, people and animals step into the 384,399 km long tube and will then start to suck all the way to the moon, there is also a specially made wheel chair built in for people who have disabilities. The materials used for this tube is mainly just, very, very, strong steel, it is water-proof. This heavy tube can hold up two 500 people at a time. It will take only about 5 seconds to reach the moon. Once they step out of the tube they step into an elevator and go inside the moon, when they get off the elevator there are 6.975 billion beds for people to sleep on, and billions, and billions of food and drink for all the people and animals to live on. By: Erkan Pasoski It will have protective materials outside covering the space-shuttle, incase of an emergency, such as a glass, parachute etc. This space-shuttle can save people‟s lives from earth and the space-shuttle can carry millions of people, as my responsibility I will keep everyone safe from all dangerous attacks. By the time 2030 everyone will be safe from all types of causes that happened on earth. By: Kolina Mei Design Brief I will design a fleet of air ships, capable of entry and escape of a planet‟s atmosphere. They will be powered by the recently invented dark matter converter. They will feature wings with flaps and slats for flying in atmospheres similar to earth, or perhaps returning to earth once the gamma ray burst ends, and the ozone layer is repaired. The exterior surface needs to be some sort of alloy/composite material that is sturdy, heat resistant and preferably, lightweight. This material should also comprise the re-usable re-entry nose cone. RJ INDUSTRIES® has made new extremely powerful and efficient engines that are in each ship, we have also made sensitive stabilisation rockets for each ship. My fleet will consist of many ships, each with their own roles, such as towing ships, residential ships, cargo ships, command ships and exploration pods. The three towing ships will tow the international space station (which has been updated since 20 years ago) with the rest of the fleet, because it would be a waste of equipment. A single one of these ships could easily drag the space station by itself, but three were made for stability, and in an emergency. The numerous massive residential ships will contain bedrooms, dining rooms and all other rooms that are required to properly emulate a house on earth. Each ship in the fleet will be named after a state/country/city on earth to reinforce that feeling. The smaller cluster of cargo ships would carry equipment and spare parts, as well as the latest IMR* units, with terabytes of food and items that can be created at any time. The VDS** has two types; one for people and one for supplies. They can also double up as shops and workplaces. I am going to design a space shuttle for a quick evacuation from Earth. There will be 1-2 space shuttles in each country, depending on location and population. The max capacity for each shuttle is 200 million people and animals. There are 5 levels; The highest level can hold 75million people and animals. The 2nd highest level can hold 50million people and animals. The last 3 levels can hold 25million people and animals, not including marine life. Animals such as small dogs or small cats and rabbits etc. could be in the same level as humans. But animals such as lions or tigers etc. need to be in cages in a different level or section to humans and small animals or marine life. For marine life there will be a built in pool with sections for small marine life and large marine life. The pool‟s capacity is 75million small and big marine life. The pools will be glassed of so, when in orbit the fish won‟t fly everywhere. Food and water is a very important part of the evacuation from Earth. Without food and water everyone will either die from starvation or die from de-hydration including animals and marine life. There will be a huge pantry on every level containing millions of pieces of food and millions of liters of water and other drinks such as juice milk or soft drink. Also for the animals and marine life food and water will be provided. Everybody needs AND wants the necessity of toilets. Toilets are on every level. On every level there will be 1million toilets. You might be wondering where all our business ends up. It wills be shot out into space. I don‟t really know where it might end up… but that isn‟t our problem. This space shuttle has the luxury of beds. In each shuttle there will be 200million beds. A bed per person, beds will be spread out throughout the space shuttle, but not in the area where the large animals are caged. I will be in the command ship, keeping the status and trajectory of the fleet within safety parameters. The command ship also houses pedobytes of data from the ship and the earth archives, which are backed up on the cargo ships. We use electricity just as much as we use water. We may not need it as much as water but we do need it. So this space shuttle WILL have electricity. People can bring their own televisions or computers or laptops etc. A few exploration pods are kept on the cargo ships to analyse the conditions on a planet before the fleet makes contact. It may also do remote repair work on earth or a ship in the fleet. This space shuttle will provide for disabled people. There will be plenty of room for disabled peoples such as people in wheelchairs or with crutches etc. A vital part of the fleet is the escape pods which are on every ship in the fleet. Each one has an IMR each, a generator and room for 15. The space shuttles are made out of Admentium. Admentium is a metal that does not break or damage. The space shuttles will be unbreakable. The inside of the space shuttles are just like a normal house with carpet and walls etc. If we want to survive, the RJ INDUSTRIES® fleet is the answer. Its space, or radioactively melted mush. Instant matter reconfigurer: will reconfigure unwanted matter into something more useful ** vehicle docking system: all ships have dual systems to transfer items from ship to ship My design works on rocket fuel. This design will cater for everyone and everything. A space shuttle in every country with a capacity of 200million is the best solution to our problem. My responsibility as a leader is to get everybody and everything of Earth safely. My design will change human society forever! Parent/Guardian Signature:________________________________ Contact No.______________________ Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Unfortunately there have been confirmed reports of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease at Seabrook Primary School. If your child presents with blisters inside the cheeks, gums and on the sides of the tongue, as well as on the hands and feet please consult with your Doctor and inform the school. Children with Hand, Foot and Mouth disease do need to be excluded from school until the blisters have dried. What is hand, foot and mouth disease? Hand, foot and mouth disease is generally a mild illness caused by the coxsackievirus. It is not a serious illness and has nothing to do with the animal disease called foot and mouth disease. It mainly occurs in children under 10 years of age but can also occur in older children and adults. What are the symptoms? Coxsackievirus infection may cause no symptoms at all or only very mild symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they include blisters that start as small red dots which later become ulcers. Blisters appear inside the cheeks, gums, and on the sides of the tongue, as well as on the hands and feet. In infants, sometimes blisters can be seen in the nappy area. Blisters usually last for seven to 10 days. Children can sometimes have a low fever, sore throat, tiredness, feel off colour and may be off their food for a day or two. Very rarely, the coxsackieviruses can cause other illnesses that affect the heart, brain, lining of the brain (meningitis), lungs, or eyes. How is it spread? Hand, foot and mouth disease is usually spread by person-to-person contact. The virus is spread from the faeces of an infected person to the mouth of the next person by contaminated hands. It is also spread by secretions from the mouth or respiratory system, and by direct contact with the fluid from blisters. It usually takes between three and five days after contact with an infected person before blisters appear. The virus can remain in faeces for several weeks. Who is at risk? The viruses that cause hand, foot and mouth disease are common and adults including pregnant women are often exposed to them without symptoms. There is no clear evidence of risk to unborn babies from hand, foot and mouth disease. However, infected mothers can pass the infection onto newborn babies who rarely can have severe disease. Outbreaks may occur in child care settings. How can it be prevented? Good hygiene is the best protection: wash hands with soap and water after going to the toilet, before eating, after wiping noses, and after changing nappies or soiled clothing. Avoid sharing cups, eating utensils, items of personal hygiene (for example: towels, washers and toothbrushes), and clothing (especially shoes and socks). Thoroughly wash any soiled clothing. Ensure the mouth and nose are covered when coughing and sneezing. Wipe the nose and mouth with tissues, dispose of used tissues and then wash your hands. How is it diagnosed? The doctor can diagnose hand, foot and mouth disease based on the symptoms. Laboratory tests are not usually necessary. How is it treated? Usually no treatment is needed. Paracetamol will relieve fever and discomfort. Do not give children aspirin. If the headache is severe, or if fever persists, consult a doctor. What is the public health response? Hand, foot and mouth disease is not notifiable. Children with hand, foot and mouth disease should be excluded from school or childcare facilities until their blisters have dried. To help prevent spread, parents should report the illness to the director of the childcare centre or school principal. See full Contact details for Public Health Units.
