OMAHA, Neb. — A local artist’s work is being featured around the world, and his newest
collection just made its debut in Washington, D.C.

“Generally speaking, most of them are pretty interesting to me,” Kaneko said.

Kaneko said he started designing this new shape about two years ago.
“This nose is pointing up compared to the other,” he said.
Each sculpture is built by hand and takes seven to eight months to dry. While they're drying,
Kaneko said he thinks about how he'll paint each one and what patterns he will use.

"Good thing is they don't talk back to me and say 'I don’t like this. I want to change it,’” he said.

“When we're making it, these things shrink 10 percent, so when we are making it, it was a little

It took six months just to tackle the technicalities of designing them, time Kaneko said was well
spent doing what he loves.
"Without challenge my life would be boring, so I try to create some interesting situations,” he said.
Some of the tanuki sculptures will soon be a permanent fixture at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo
and Aquarium.
