We are all called to prayer. As a faith community, let us keep in mind all those who have asked us to pray for them, that they may experience the healing power of our gracious God Peter An, Elaine Bellock, Eric Braham, Pat Brennan, Maureen Brodeur, Dominic Cantarella, Jim Cavanaugh, Kay Cavanaugh, Michael Cavaliere, Cheryl, John Dolan, Dan Doyle, Frank Falcone, Joe & Peg Farrell, Mary Finlay, John Flaherty, Hayley Kuhn, Maria Ludwig, Joseph Montgomery, Adalcina Antao Moreira, Fr. Charles Parr, Michael Papalos, John Pra, Christopher Raiola, Tom Warren, Diane Zadrozny. If you know someone whose name should be removed, please keep us informed. To add a name, please fill out the form on the website or in the rectory (sorry, the forms in church keep disappearing).. PREPARING FOR NEXT WEEK’S LITURGY Thirty-third Sunday of the Year First Reading: Daniel 12:1-3 The book of Daniel was written 150 years before Christ, when the Jews were experiencing fierce persecution. The author wanted to encourage them by telling heroic stories about a person named Daniel who lived many centuries earlier. For most of their history, Old Testament people believed only in, at best, a shadowy existence after death. Today’s passage contains one of the earliest references to a growing belief in life after death. Second Reading: Hebrews 10:14-18 Scholars feel the community for which the Letter to the Hebrews was written included Christians of Jewish origin. Since it was written after the Jewish temple was destroyed, they were pining for the old days when the high priest offered daily sacrifices in the temple. The author says they shouldn’t be upset. They no longer need a temple, sacrifices or priests because Jesus is all of these and more. Parish on a Journey What Does it Mean to be Catholic? Have you ever wondered what it meant to be Catholic? You are definitely not alone. Many of us, regular church goers included, don’t truly know what it means to be Catholic. Thankfully, author Jack Mulder makes it ever so easy by writing in a conversational style and explaining Catholicism in an inviting way. He writes about what the Catholic Church teaches on same-sex marriage, original sin, the Virgin Mary, abortion, and other issues that we sometimes think about in an easy- to-read and understand language. What Does it Mean to be Catholic? is an excellent read for all who are hungry and curious to know more about the Catholic Church. What Does it Mean to be Catholic? by Jack Mulder Jr. In paper, Kindle or NOOK books. ¯ God’s Grace is Young Enough For the Young and Young At Heart Readings for this Sunday 1 Kings 17:10-16; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44 Eagerly Awaiting God in our Lives Suggested Reflection Questions •Have you ever felt like you had nothing left to give, like the widows in the first reading and the Gospel? When has God asked more than seemed possible of you? How did God provide for you in that experience? •We hear of the Lord righting wrongs in today’s world (justice/oppressed, food/hungry). Where do you think these words are most relevant today? How are you participating in God’s work in these areas? Could you be doing more? •What are the areas of poverty in your life? What are the areas of abundance? Can you offer both your poverty and your abundance back to God? •How do you “eagerly await” God’s coming into your life? Convent Station, New Jersey Saint Thomas More Remembering Those Who Have Gone Before Us Marked with the Sign of Faith All Saints Day and All Souls begin a month of remembering those who have departed from this life. The increased darkness is a stark symbol that even with the promise of eternal life death is difficult for all who remain. As we close the month we will remember all who have died, especially those who have left us this year at the 11 am liturgy on Nov. 28. It is also the First Sunday of Advent when we hear the promise that the Lord will come again. Set aside this date to remember. Welcome to St. Thomas More Parish We are glad you decided to celebrate with our Parish Family.
