Frequently Asked Questions:
ChooseMyPlate.gov Permissions for Logos, Icons,
Graphics, Website Content, and Website Links
CNPP frequently receives inquiries about MyPlate
and USDA logo usage, as well as utilizing and
modifying content from ChooseMyPlate.gov.
Answers to these questions can be found here.
You may consult this document for all permissionsrelated questions. Permissions to specific requests
will not be provided by the USDA or Center for
Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) on an
individual basis.
Logo, Icons, and Graphics
Am I permitted to use the USDA logo?
No. Materials developed externally to USDA may not
include the USDA logo.
How about adding my logo to a
document containing a USDA logo?
Organizations are not permitted to add a logo to
materials or content produced by USDA carrying the
USDA logo.
Am I permitted to use the MyPlate icon?
USDA encourages the use of the MyPlate icon in
a variety of applications and settings. However,
certain restrictions apply. The image must be used
as a whole, including the URL ChooseMyPlate.gov,
and must not be altered. A MyPlate Style Guide
demonstrates correct and incorrect uses. Any use
may not suggest or imply USDA endorsement of an
organization, product, service, or otherwise.
be misleading. Additional information can be found
at ChooseMyPlate.gov in the document, “Guidance
on Use of USDA’s MyPlate and Statements About
Amounts of Food Groups Contributed by Foods on
Food Product Labels.”
I have a unique need and rationale to alter
the image in a specific way. May I have
permission to do so?
No. If you reproduce the MyPlate graphics either
electronically or in print, we ask that you use them
as originally designed and that they be sourced to
the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.
With regard to the use of the MyPlate icon in print
and other media, guidance is provided in the form
of conditions of use and in the MyPlate Style Guide
at ChooseMyPlate.gov. If you alter or modify their
design you cannot credit, or be associated with,
USDA or CNPP. Finally, CNPP will not provide
altered images or materials by special request
including, but not limited to, other languages, fonts,
colors, or highlighting combinations of food groups.
I want to publish the MyPlate graphic in a book
and need a written permissions statement.
You may print the graphic in your publication
provided you use the image unaltered and in its
entirety per the MyPlate Style Guide. This statement
should serve as your written permission.
How about using the MyPlate icon
on food packaging?
MyPlate can be used on food packaging to point
consumers to ChooseMyPlate.gov to get more
information about what and how much to eat. The
MyPlate icon should not be used on food labels
in conjunction with what and how much to eat. In
addition to the requirements stated above, use on
labels/labeling on packaging or at retail sale cannot

Caregiver
Connection
How to Really Help a Caregiver
Your good friend seems different lately. You
know that her husband’s health has been failing
and she has been taking him to more doctor’s
appointments. But she hasn’t been returning
your calls. You’ve offered to help but she hasn’t
accepted it. You begin to wonder if maybe she
doesn’t want your help. Or your calls.
Trust me, she does.
Caregivers have so much on their plates when
caring for a loved one. They are under a great
deal of stress and often don’t reach out or accept
help that is offered. It’s often really hard for
someone to ask for help. Or to tell you what they
need when you say “let me know what I can do
to help”. Caregivers don’t want to be a burden to
anyone and it’s hard to sort through the ‘to do’ list
to delegate responsibilities.
They may want to, or feel they need to, provide all
the care themselves. But there are things you can
do. Here are some tips to really help a caregiver:
• Let her know you don’t know what it’s like to be
in her situation but that will help in any way you
can. Try to imagine what it would be like to be in
her shoes. What would be helpful for you?
• When you offer to help, she may not know what
to ask for help with. Be prepared to offer specific
ideas. Some ideas include; offer to walk her dog,
take the kids to the park in the evening, pick up a
few groceries or sit with her husband so she can
run some errands.
• She likely has a long “to do” list and each day it
gets longer and may seem insurmountable. Offer
6
ADRC-CW MONTHLY GUIDE SEPTEMBER 2015
to contact friends to let them know what is going
on in her world. She’s focusing all her energy on
her loved one and doesn’t have any more left at
the end of the day to make those calls. Those
friends will likely want to help when they know
what’s going on.
• Allow her to vent. Listen to what she needs
to say. She does not expect you to have the
answers. She just needs someone to hear her.
You may not know what it is like to be a full
time caregiver, but if it was you, you would want
someone to talk to about the tough times.
• When calling, realize she may not be able to
chat as long as she used to. But she appreciates
hearing your voice and knowing you are thinking
of her. Send her texts or emails – simple
messages saying “I’m thinking of you”. Those
really do mean a lot.
• Don’t be offended if she doesn’t return calls
quickly or declines offers for get-togethers.
She isn’t trying to be standoffish. She truly is
exhausted and may not have the energy to give to
anyone else at this time. But she needs to know
her friends are there and supportive.
• Make a point to call before you visit and offer to
pick up items from the store or pharmacy.
• If you do drop by, don’t expect to stay as
she may be in the middle of something. Bring
something that will lift her spirits - like cut flowers
from your yard, a plate of cookies or something
as a simple as a hug.
• Set up a ‘standing appointment’ with her if
possible. For example, offer to come over every
Saturday morning for 2 hours so that she can do
whatever she would like. She will have something
to look forward to each week – the promise of
time to herself.
• Bring in a meal and clean up afterwards. She is
making sure her loved one eats well but may not
be eating a balanced meal herself.
She may not have needed help when you offered
a week ago. Or she thought the illness wouldn’t
last long and she could manage everything. But
maybe her loved one is not getting better. Or
she is beginning to realize that she can’t do it
all alone. Continue to offer and show that you
care. Caregivers often forget to take care of
themselves. They put their own health and wellbeing on the back burner. They expend so much
energy on taking care of their loved one that they
have little energy left for anything else. Knowing
that you care means the world.
You may be surprised how much a kind,
reassuring word can mean to a caregiver.
They are dealing with stress, anger, pain and
often daily changes which are frightening.
Acknowledge that she is doing a good job. Words
of encouragement can be just the fuel she needs
to keep going.

PREPLANNING FOR SURGERY
Do you have an upcoming surgery and worry
about what to do during the recovery period? Are
you going to be able to take care of yourself at
home after surgery? Or are you going to need
rehabilitation at a nursing home after surgery?
Are you able to privately pay for the assistance
you will need or have limited resources? What are
your options? What services are offered in the
community? Who do you contact to find out what is
available in your community? Will Medicare pay? Or
are there other financial options?
14
ADRC-CW MONTHLY GUIDE SEPTEMBER 2015
May I suggest contacting your Aging and Disability
Resource Center? It is normal to have a lot of
questions and the best planned recovery period
means addressing them prior to surgery. Your Aging
and Disability Resource Center can help you find
the answers to these questions. We can discuss
your options for care, need for home health services,
qualifications for Meals on Wheels, need for loan
equipment, what happens if you need rehabilitation
at a nursing home.
The Aging and Disability Resource Center can
discuss the options with you so you can make an
informed decision. We can talk about your recovery
or condition. We will need to talk about your financial
situation to talk about private pay options or options
if you have limited resources. If you are going to
be needing short term assistance, home health
services may be a great option and Medicare may
be able to cover some home health services. If your
condition will end up being long term, Medicaid may
be able to pay for services you may need in your
home. You will need to give some careful thought
to your finances. We can assist with seeing if you
qualify for Meals on Wheels and setting this service
up once you are home. We can discuss possible
medical equipment you may need at home such as
shower chair, commode, walker, wheel chair, transfer
chair, etc. The loan closet equipment is available up
to 6 months free of charge.
If you would like to know the answer to these
questions, contact your Aging and Disability
Resource Center at 1-888-486-9545.

MEMORY SCREENING
By Mike Rhea, Resource Services Director
Where are my keys… Again?
The Alzheimer’s Association states that, “Alzheimer’s
disease is the second most feared disease – behind
only cancer. Nearly 22 percent of Americans rate
Alzheimer’s as the disease they are most afraid of
getting.” The fear is there. Many older adults fixate
on instances of memory lapses. When does it
become a problem? The Alzheimer Association also
says that older adults want to know as 95% of those
GENERAL
60 and older say they would want to know about a
memory impairment as soon as possible.
It is critical to find out as soon as possible.
Research indicates that early detection of memory
impairments is key to successful intervention.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, early
detection of a memory impairment can help achieve
the maximum benefits from available treatments.
Maximum benefits may help the patient maintain a
level of independence longer. A few other benefits
of early detection are being able to participate in
clinical drug trials and also allows you and your
loved ones to plan for the future.
While everyone experiences memory lapses from
time to time, sustained “forgetfulness” is something
that should be further evaluated to determine if
intervention is needed. The ADRC-CW has recently
begun to administer evidence based memory
screens that can identify potential memory deficits.
These quick screens are not intended to diagnosis
memory impairments but rather identify if there
are signs of potential deficits that should be further
evaluated by your physician. In September we will
be holding 2 memory screening events in Marathon
County. These quick screening sessions will be
available at the dates and locations listed below.
While reservations are encouraged to assure an
appointment slot, walk-ins will be accepted. You can
make a reservation by calling our toll free number

MEDICARE BASIC’S CLASSES
IS IT OR ISN’T IT ALZHEIMER’S?
If you are new to Medicare, or will be soon, consider
attending our Medicare basic’s class.
The Alzheimer’s Association has a great “info
sheet” that helps a person start sorting out whether
someone has serious memory issues or typical
forgetfulness. As stated in their publication a person
should always speak with their physician about
the concerns for themselves or a loved one. But
sometimes it really helps to “start somewhere”. Here
are 5 of the 10 thoughts from their info sheet.

sign might be when the person accuses others of
stealing from them.
October 21st

5) Decreased or poor judgement: Typical: Everyone
makes a poor decision once in a while. Concern:

to one’s grooming and hygiene. Sometimes people
will become excessive in how they spend their
money such as giving unusually large amounts to
telemarketers.

THE NEW RETIREMENT AND
SECRETS OF THE HAPPIEST
RETIREES
Most retirement planning focuses only on the financial
aspect which is very important, but there is more to
consider in having the fulfilling retirement you may
have envisioned. For most people, the transition from
work to retirement is one of the most significant and
sometimes even difficult transitions in their lives. To help
people get their “non-financial portfolio” in order, United
Way Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is
offering a free program in which we take a look at some
important areas in retirement planning that are often
overlooked. United Way RSVP invites you to join us on
Thursday, September 10 from 10:00 –11:30 am at the
United Way at 705 S. 24th Ave., Ste. 400B in Wausau
for this helpful program. Whether you’re still working,
planning to retire, recently retired or have been retired
for years, this program has something of value for you. It
will provide you with many useful and practical ideas to
help you create the retirement you had envisioned. This
is part of the Retirement Well-Being series presented
by United Way RSVP, a 55+ volunteer service providing
personalized placement and support to persons
interested in volunteering. Call United Way RSVP at
715-298-5721 to register for this event or for information
on volunteering.
UNDERSTANDING OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis is a disease that makes your bones less
dense and more fragile becoming more susceptible
to fractures and injury. In fact, 1 out of every 3 women
over 50 will have an osteoporosis related fracture in
their lifetime. To help you learn about Osteoporosis
and steps you can take to reduce your risk and stay
healthy, United Way RSVP invites you to attend a free
program on Monday, September 14 from 9:30 -10:30
am at the United Way office at 705 S. 24th Ave., Ste.
400B in Wausau. The program will be presented by the
Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation and is free and
open to the community. Call United Way RSVP at 715298-5721 to register.
