Others think of the outdoors as an essential experience to meet their goal of wellbeing. Spending time with nature can be a way to connect with family and friends. Just being outdoors, whether relaxing or doing an activity can be both energizing and calming. Nature can also provide a quiet place to connect or reconnect with your spirituality. Imagine the challenges you might experience if you wanted to enjoy the outdoors but had different abilities. Maybe you need wheelchair accessible environments. Perhaps you need an outlet for your medical equipment. Possibly you need a hospital bed to comfortably accommodate you during the night or you need a lift to get in and out of bed. Maybe you loved spending time at the beach, camping, hunting, kayaking or skiing but an accident or illness changed how you can use your body. Or just maybe you never thought you’d have the opportunity to try any of these activities because of an illness, condition or disability. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has those needs in mind as they continue to build a more inclusive and welcoming State Park System. Accessible cabins have been designed for those needing alternative options to be able to enjoy the parks. The Park System has 10 accessible cabins located throughout Wisconsin and they are reserved 4 ADRC-CW MONTHLY GUIDE AUGUST 2016 for individuals with disabilities and their guests. The cabins must be reserved ahead of time and preplanning is a must with a limited number of cabins available. The Park System even has two rustic cabins available for individuals with disabilities. The cabins are located at 8 of our beautiful State Parks: Buckhorn, Harrington Beach, High Cliff, Kettle Moraine, Kohler-Andrae, Mirror Lake, Potawatomi and Richard Bong Recreation Area. If camping doesn’t suit you but you would still like to enjoy a day at the state parks look into accessible trails or rent an adapted kayak. According to the Department of Natural Resources, “Wisconsin state parks, forests and trails have more than 650 miles of trails that are accessible to wheelchair users and others with mobility impairments.” The DNR also makes adapted kayaks available at some of the state parks (Buckhorn, Council Grounds, Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake, and Perrot). An accessible kayak can be rented from the parks by the day. The Department of Natural Resources has other options for individual of all abilities that want to connect to the “great outdoors.” Every fishing pier that is built by the DNR has to be accessible and designed to accommodate wheelchairs: wide enough to turn around, lower railings and rod holders. The DNR also has accessible beaches at various State Parks. In the winter months, adapted cross country skiing equipment and gentle, well groomed trails can be found at a handful of the State Parks. Hunting opportunities and accessible wildlife blinds are located throughout the state at various State Parks. Also, if you are interested in accessing the outdoors no matter your ability, research some of the other agencies and organizations that are working to connect and/or educate about opportunities to connect individuals with disabilities to the outdoors: • Midstate Independent Living Consultants: milc-inc.org/ or 800-382-8484 For more information, visit “Open the Outdoors” Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: http:// dnr.wi.gov/topic/openoutdoors/ Summertime gives us a great opportunity to explore the outdoors and let Mother Nature help you achieve wellness in many areas of your life. A few places to start: For more information on resources or opportunities for adults with disabilities, please contact your local Aging and Disability Resource Center. For those living in Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon and Wood Counties call the ADRC of Central Wisconsin at 888-486-9545. • Fishing Has No Boundaries: fhnbinc.org or 800-243-3462 • Challenge the Outdoors: ctoforme.org or 920-593-6300 • North American Squirrel Association: nasasquirrel.org or 608- 234-5988 • Adaptive Sportsman: adaptivesportsman.org/index.html Sources: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Not only are many older drivers at a higher risk for road accidents, people over 65 are more likely to be seriously hurt in a vehicle accident. Many caregivers are concerned about their older loved one taking the wheel but have a difficult time approaching this sensitive subject. Many seniors continue to be good, safe drivers as they age, but there are normal changes that can affect driving skills. As joints get stiff, muscles weaken and reflexes are slowed it is more difficult to turn your head to look back, steer quickly or safely hit the breaks. Eyesight and vision changes also can affect safe driving. Medical conditions such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, arthritis and strokes may also affect driving as well as the medications taken to combat these and other illnesses. Being able to drive is more than just getting where you want to go. It is a symbol of freedom, independence and self-sufficiency. But there may be a time when driving is no longer safe. How does one go about taking this privilege away from the person they love? It is important to know the warning signs of unsafe driving. (Look at the driving behaviors over a period of time, not just one trip.) 6 ADRC-CW MONTHLY GUIDE AUGUST 2016 • Abrupt lane changes, braking or accelerating • Trouble navigating turns • Drifts into other lanes • Confusion at exits • Near misses • Confusing brake and gas pedals • Delayed responses to unexpected situations • Failure to observe traffic signs • Increased agitation or irritation while driving • Driving at inappropriate speeds • Fails to pay attention to signs, signals or pedestrians If you notice any of these warning signs it is time to initiate change. Start by scheduling a driving evaluation through the local DMV and/or refresher driving lessons. Try finding ways to reduce the amount of driving by ordering things through the mail, using public transportation or finding others to give rides when able. Having friends and family members stop by on a regular basis to offer help with errands, etc. is another good approach. When it is clear that driving is no longer safe at all, start slowly and respectfully in persuading the person to give up his/her keys. Talk about safety – theirs and others on the road. Talk about options for getting around (public transportation, friends, family, taxi) - hopefully some of these are already in place. Emphasize the cost savings associated with giving up a car: gas, insurance, repairs, fees, etc. The money saved can be used to pay for taxis or other transportation services. Use the confirmation of family, friends and physician to back up your concern for the person’s safety. Plan to visit the person weekly at a designated time to assist with things like shopping and appointments. Also be sure that transportation is available to meet their social needs as well. If the person refuses to quit driving, it may be necessary to take away the car keys, disable the car or remove it from their residence. A physician can write a prescription stating “no driving” and/or a local police officer could explain the importance of safe driving and the legal implications of unsafe driving. Do not jeopardize the safety of your loved one or others by ignoring the issue of unsafe driving. Additional resources on this subject are available through AARP, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin (888-486-9545). Accessing the Outdoors… 8 Paddling a kayak can be a great way to enjoy the cool water of lakes, rivers and other waterways that beckon on hot summer days and the beautiful shores lined with colored foliage on fall days. with hand braces for individuals with a limited grip for ease of paddling. All these modifications can be adjusted or removed depending on the person’s level of ability. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources offers adaptive kayaks for people with physical disabilities at Buckhorn, Council Grounds, Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake and Perrot State Parks. These kayaks have adjustable outriggers near the back of the kayak that provide stability on the water. The seats are modified with a raised back and side supports to provide more security and comfort when paddling. In addition the paddle has been adapted For more information about adaptive kayaks or other recreational opportunities in the state go to dnr. wi.gov/topic/openoutdoors/equipment.html or contact Anthonette Gilpatrick, DNR Accessibility Coordinator at 608-267-7490. PREVENTION JUST MAKES SENSE “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” – B. Franklin We hear the word prevention a lot these days in regards to health care, but what does prevention really mean? What might come to mind first is the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” yet it seems our health care system tends to focus more on treating disease. Prevention, on the other hand, focuses on sustaining good health, encouraging people to become active participants in maintaining their own health. 14 ADRC-CW MONTHLY GUIDE AUGUST 2016 In 2011 Medicare began to change the way they offer health care by including a large number of preventive tests and screenings to their list of covered services. Over the past five years, that list has continued to grow. Things like cardiovascular disease screenings, bone mass measurements, mammograms and cancer screenings are now covered without a co-payment or deductible. A complete list of covered preventive services is available online at www.medicare.gov or at Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin, 1-888-486-9545. You can use this list to talk to your doctor about which preventive screenings are right for you. Medicare offers preventive services with the goal that everyone enrolled in Medicare use these benefits. Preventive care doesn’t only improve one’s own physical health, it is also an important step in reducing the cost of health care. The financial costs of treating chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes are enormous. Add in the intangible costs of pain and suffering, and the very real economic costs of lost productivity, and the opportunity costs of chronic illness are simply unacceptable. Focusing on prevention also makes sense because it places the emphasis on treating the whole person instead of a condition or disease. When we help people take better care of their health, everyone in the community benefits. If we wait to pay for care as illness progresses, the price of health care for the country will continue to rise. Prevention just makes sense. Mike Graper – Outreach Specialist Adapted from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services GENERAL WALKING THROUGH THE MAZE MEDICARE BASICS CLASSES Sometimes we need to use medical equipment (walkers, rollators, and scooters) to access our surroundings. It can feel like navigating through a maze. We need to keep in mind the safety of ourselves and others when using medical equipment. We need to be aware of how these devices can impact our surroundings and how it might be difficult for someone to navigate the space around them. If you are new to Medicare, or will be soon, consider attending our Medicare basics class. CLASS SCHEDULE – PLEASE CALL TO REGISTER Location Date/Time • If you use a walker, wheel chair or scooter, be sure that you park it in a place that does not disrupt the flow of the area that you are utilizing and that it does not prevent someone else from utilizing the area. • Be courteous of others who also need to access the same space.
