Girls meet with mentors once weekly for group and one-on-one discussions, role-playing, special activities, and speakers. Book Discussion for Black History Month: Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward Wednesday, February 18 • 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm Main Meeting Room (HMA467) This memoir of five deaths in five years in Jesmyn Ward’s rural Mississippi hometown, details the forces that combined to place lives of young, African-American men in such peril. Ward, the winner of the 2011 National Book Award for her post-Katrina novel, Salvage the Bones, examines what led up to the deaths of her friends and relatives as well as the corrosive effects of racism and poverty. New members are always welcome! “The Pardoner’s Tale” from Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer (d. 1400) Monday, January 26 Chaucer is considered the towering figure in English literature before Shakespeare. He was a well-traveled government official who visited Italy and became familiar with the works of Dante and Boccaccio. The Canterbury Tales, his masterpiece, is a collection of stories told by a group of pilgrims on their way from London to the shrine of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury. By turns pious, romantic, and bawdy, these tales reward readers with their humor and insight. In this month’s selection, we read “The Pardoner’s Tale,” a story about riotous youths told by a seller of indulgences. 6 January/February 2015 • by David Hume (1711-1776) Monday, February 23 David Hume was a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Never an academic philosopher, Hume was rather a man of letters and of affairs. He gave voice to philosophical empiricism, a conviction that knowledge must be based on direct sensory experience.
