Hannah Rone Benjamin Strong 3 The Kentucky Challenge —A monthly publication of the Kentucky Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God “Lord, in my over four decades of serving you, I’ve discovered a few principles that have helped to guide me in my faith. In some seasons, these principles were gifts that simply kept me moving forward in my faith journey and at other times they enabled me to overcome real discouragement. I learned them early and they continue to be a helpful compass and companion. What are these treasures, these eternal gifts to me and anyone else that will embrace them? The first is the gift of work - a task to embrace, a ministry to which I offer myself. Some may confuse this confession with my current position as pastor. The truth is, however, that I gave myself to this way of life for years before ever walking in a calling or vocation. I’ve also observed a similar internal joy that accompanies others that have learned the lesson that God calls all believers to serve and work within a local church. Solomon taught us that work is a gift. It can certainly be abused at times and we can overextend ourselves with excess. But work primarily gives us moments to reveal God’s handiwork inside of us. The second treasure is the gift of friendship. No real expectations required other than connection and time. I know by nature I’m shy and withdrawn and will admit my profession often requires me to push beyond my comfort zone to nurture existing or build new relationships. But life becomes empty without genuine friendships to invest in… and to receive strength from. I’m grateful to know that friendship truly is a treasure worth pursuing. Lord, remind me to always value those you’ve put in my life as friends… not to suffocate them or demand too much of them. Thank-You Lord. Thank you for giving me these gifts. Thank you also for providing a platform to share these gifts before our church family and in the wider community of faith. Give all of us grace and wisdom to embrace them and journey balanced lives where work and friendship primarily are understood as an extension of your love in our lives. Amen.” The Top 16 myths of “Making Disciples” #1 “Making disciples is God’s work, not ours.” #2 “Making disciples is spiritual, therefore allergic to programs. #3 “Making disciples is based upon our assumpAons, which never need to be quesAoned.” #4 “Making disciples is the pastor’s job. Isn’t that why we hire and pay him? #5 “Our forefathers never needed it. Nor did we. Why do they? #6 “One church size fits all.” #7 “We’re a friendly congregaAon: we don’t need to recognize and befriend visitors.” #8 “Churches don’t pro-‐acAvely make disciples: people become disciples themselves.” #9 “If people don’t feel at home God has another place for them.” 4 #10 “We believe the aWendance numbers when they are good. When they are bad, you can make numbers say whatever you want them to.” #11 “New members will somehow connect themselves if their conversion is real.” #12 “Joining our church as new members and belonging are synonyms.” #13 “Friendships just develop naturally: they can’t possibly be assisted or enhanced.” #14 “Becoming a disciple is finished once someone becomes a regular member of our church. #15 “When regular members become inacAve, they are betraying us and should repent. They need to make all the moves back to us. #16 “Once people have dropped out of church, there’s nothing more we can say or do to get them back and we have nothing to learn from them.” May 2016 The Kentucky Challenge —A monthly publication of the Kentucky Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God Prayer & Fasting Cumberland & Mountain Sections CUMBERLAND-‐ May 2016 Wednesday, May 11th 10am – 2pm EST KYAG WOMEN’S RETREAT 2016 First Assembly of God 1015 S. Through the years I have had conversations with many pastors who told me that their church was not in a position to support missions because they could barely pay their monthly bills. “When you are looking for money to pay the mortgage, you’re not thinking about sending money to a missionary.” I can understand the pressure when the money gets tight. I know what it means to get discouraged and limit your focus inward. The problem is that when we do it, this it limits our faith in other areas as well. It becomes difficult to exercise vibrant faith when asking God to provide the needs for the members of our congregation, whether they be physical, material or spiritual I am not writing this to condemn anyone who is struggling financially with church obligations, but rather to remind you that Paul wrote in Philippians 4:19, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Our most effective sermons are the ones we live, not the ones we preach. If we truly believe what Paul declared, we need to demonstrate it by our TRUST in the Lord. We will be good stewards of Gods finances, but TRUST means that we can, with the Lord’s direction, share our finances in other areas of ministry without fear. Not giving means not trusting, not believing what Jesus said; “If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving - large or small - it will be used to measure what is given back to you." Luke 6:38 (NLT) Can we minister to others and not truly believe the simple words of Christ, “If you give, you will receive”? This is the assurance that He left with us that as long as we would live by His life’s principles, He would always provide for us according to the measure we have used in our giving. So you see, our giving to missions is not really about the money, it is about our TRUST in the Lord and His promises. We either believe Him or we do not. If we give to missions, will the Lord provide for the needs of our Church? Do we TRUST Him or not? I have never known a church that was not blessed financially for giving to missions!
