Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars. Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. 3 WE PRAY FOR THE SICK Rafael Aceves, Armando & Armanda Adonis, Augustine Aguilo, Angie Ambler, Olivia Aranjo, Molly Bakalar, Christina Baldres, Benita Barrios, Barbara Barnum, Ray Baugh, Pedro Benzon, Norma Bertrand, Tony Bibal, Frances Boudreau, Nido Canlas, Renee Canlas, Gloria Carillo, Rachel Castro, Noe Cevallos, John Chun, Maria Teresa Chun, Joe Coelho, Cheryl Collier, Gregory Collier, Ernesto Cordero, Diana Dantic, Elvis Daza, Sally Dumaraos, Anthony, Remy Gonzales, Joe De Guzman, Marcelina & Sebastian De Guzman, Yolanda Dirlam, John Doria, Isabel Doria, James Doria, Richard Doria, Marvin Dumlao, Erlinda Eriza, Miqui Alex Eriza, Marcelo Espina, Lourdes Espiritu, Mary Esteves, Rosa Faria, Renato Fuentes, Zita Ganaden, Nick & Flo Gandolfo, Clarita Glaraga, Olga Gomes, Rocio Gomez, Efma Grecia, Christopher Hinojos, Eric Hope, Olivia Jaquez, Diana Kenna, Sean Kenna, Priscila Lano, Fernando Lara, Lowell Lawrence, Angela Lee, Eunwha Lee, Josefina Limtao, Gunter Liu, Ernesto Llamas, Ira Llamas, Antonio Lopez, Frank Lopez, Mark London, Ira Joseph Lumang, Christine Martinez, Claude Merchant, Rosa Mesa, Cindy Monroy, Cameron Moreno, Becky Moss, Louie Newman, Herminia Niebres, Andrew Nieto, Robert Norman, Estrella Nufable, Fred Nunes, Anthony Nunes, Manuel Nunes, Fernanda Otero, Kyla Orr, Delia Ovalles, Jose Patron, Nina Pham, Hugo Pennock, Maria Prieto, Ray Resurreccion, Rudy Rivera, Lupe Rodriguez, Althea Robertson, Etelvina Rocha, Mario Rodriguez, Glenda Roop, Phillip Ruiz, John Ryan, Josefina Salamanca,Louie Salamanca, Rita Salas, Elenita Santos, Herman Santos, Rita Santos, Vic Santos, Alexander Sasbone, Lily Silveria, Sister Stella, Damrong Sithichai, Clay Solancho, Sergio Tamayo, Jun Tan, Joseph & George Tharaniyil, Frank Tom, Ryon Tom, Catherine Unanka, Reina Uyan, Rufino Valenton, Thea VanDe Mortel, Julia Velediaz, Nanette Vergara, Marcus Walton, Dee Dee Wilson, Randy Worsham, Paul Yasutake, Josie Yu, Joe Zamora. Seeing their eager faces, I have this immense feeling of joy in my heart for them, knowing that they are at the threshold of possibly one of the best experiences they can have in their lives. Ever! I was there when five million people converged in Manila for the finale mass of St. John Paul II in Manila for the World Youth Day in 1995. I was a newly ordained priest then and the images of those amazing days remain so vivid in my memory. Notwithstanding the record breaking crowd, the spirit of unity that pervaded that blessed gathering was electrifying. To sing “Tell the World of His Love” with millions of Catholics in the presence of a dearly loved Pope can be unforgettable. A few years later I had another chance to join another World Youth Day, this time during the great Jubilee of 2000 in Rome. If you have no idea what “Catholic” really means, immerse yourself in the midst of the Eternal City and soak in the universality of those who share our faith. African priests who speak beautiful French, youth leaders from the Shakespearean city of Verona (the setting Romeo and Juliet), students of a Salesian school from Belorussia, Cantonese youth from Hong Kong: these are just glimpses of the diversity and immensity of the Body of Christ. It may be about sixteen years ago but the theme song, “L’Emmanuel” is still on my playlist. I asked the delegates to be safe and to enjoy. It is with a twinge of envy that I saw them off. I have to remain here and man the fort. However, I am confident that this experience will be enough to fire up their hearts and we, as a parish, will be richer because of it. Let us join our prayers for our parishioners who are part of World Youth Day (these include our Young Adults who joined their peers from the LA Cathedral). Let us pray that they may be safe, inspired and reinvigorated in their faith. -Fr. Parents should be wary of online solicitation A study on online victimization found that approximately one in five children receive sexual solicitation from a stranger over the internet. Given today’s reliance on online contact, imagine how much that number has grown over the last several years. Children who use the internet cannot be totally safe from dangers, because the internet is open to all, but parents should monitor activity and sites visited to ensure that their kids aren’t being contacted by predators. Talk to your child about internet safety and appropriate vs. inappropriate communication. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “An Overview of ‘Online’ Problems and Risks,” email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213) 637-7227. July 24, 2016 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 8 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. August 17, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. (every 3rd Wednesday of the month) SUBSCRIBE TO LIFENEWS.COM Abortion and Contraception "It is noteworthy that as acceptance and use of contraception have increased in our society, so have acceptance and use of abortion. Couples who unintentionally conceive a child while using contraception are far more likely to resort to abortion than others. Tragically, our society has fallen into a mentality that views children as a burden and invites many to consider abortion as a "backup" to contraceptive failure. This is most obvious in efforts to promote as "emergency contraception" drugs that really act as early abortifacients. "With Pope John Paul II we affirm that contraception and abortion are "specifically different evils," because only "the latter destroys the life of a human being," but that they are also related (The Gospel of Life, no. 13). It is important to remember that means that are referred to as "contraceptive" are, in reality, sometimes also abortifacient. An end to abortion will not come from contraceptive campaigns but from a deeper understanding of our human sexuality, and of human life, as sacred gifts deserving our careful stewardship” (2001: US Bishops’ Pastoral Plan for Pro-life Activities: A Campaign in Support of Life). -de www.priestsforlife.org July 24, 2016 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Monday Tuesday July 24 July 25 July 26 July 27 5:30am – 6:30pm De Colores Choir CHOIR ROOM 9:30am – 10:30am Legion of Mary Praesidium ST.
