The key to improving the early education of all young children, including those with
special needs, is the effective preparation and development of the professionals who work
with them. The goal of ensuring that all personnel are “highly qualified” is easy to say but
difficult to define and implement. Written by distinguished early childhood and early
intervention leaders, Practical Approaches to Early Childhood Professional Development provides
an organized and accessible format for building quality and qualifications into professional
development programs. Throughout the chapters, the authors address many of the leading
issues in the early childhood field, such as:
• Creating effective professional development opportunities,
• Reflecting cultural and linguistic diversity both in pre-service programs and in
the classroom,
• Creating inclusive settings and learning environments,
• Working in partnership with families, and
• Developing policies that will ensure quality in early childhood education and
early intervention.

ACQUIREC Therapy
ACQUIREc Therapy is a recently developed and tested form of
intensive pediatric movement therapy that is informed by scientific theory and has led to rapid and sustained acquisition of new
motor skills and improvement in existing skills. Participation in
the course of ACQUIREc Therapy, provided over 3 to 4 weeks, has
also enhanced many other aspects of children’s and family’s lives.
The name “ACQUIREc Therapy” refers to a particular set of procedures and a systematic course of therapy administered by highly
trained pediatric therapists. The word “ACQUIRE” was selected
because the goal is to acquire new and improved neuromotor
competence. “ACQUIREc” is also an acronym that identifies some
of the distinctive features of this new form of evidence-based
therapy:

Relevant recent work experience
In my freelance projects since 2000 (through Michael Brady
Design), I have designed (and, in some cases, edited) many
monographs (such as Megaprojects and Wired To . . . Clients
for ACEC, Love to Read and School Readiness and SocialEmotional Development for NBCDI, among others); worked
as the production designer for Philosophia Africana, a
scholarly journal at DePaul University; designed materials for
educational publishers (Kaplan Early Learning and Teaching
Strategies); and designed informational and promotional
materials for commercial clients.
2006–
From 2000 to 2008, I was a graphic designer in the
Publications Office of FPG Child Development Institute at
UNC–CH. My principal projects were most of the books and
monographs produced by FPG; the comprehensive design of
Growing Literacy (formerly, Partners for Literacy), a multipart
early-childhood literacy curriculum; the design of Orchid,
a magazine on women’s health; and a wide array of posters,
brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and related small publications.
From 1988 to 2000, I was Design Manager at the Institute of
Goverment (now School of Government) at UNC–CH, where
I designed or oversaw the design and production of an
average of fifteen books, two quarterly journals, numerous
sales catalogs, brochures, flyers, and miscellaneous maps,
posters, announcements, and ephemera a year. In this position,
I supervised a staff of two artists and several freelance
designers.
