SMBA may be able to help. Each year our Association awards scholarships to help fund bluegrass learning opportunities for our members, both adults and children. In the past we have funded attendees for jam camps, various instrument camps, lessons and other learning opportunities. If you are interested, please e-mail our scholarship committee chair at michaellebo@comcast.net. Include name, address and other contact information, as well as the learning opportunity in which you plan to participate. Please provide any other information the committee would find helpful such as your years of experience and how and why you got interested in bluegrass. We look forward to helping advance bluegrass learning in our area. Applications will be considered at any time. Nothing out there is as good an entertainment value as a summer festival. I just returned from the Gettysburg Festival this past week and, even though it rained every day except Thursday, we had a wonderful 4 days. A lot of people say that Gettysburg has gotten expensive, myself included at times, but the truth of the matter is that it is still a great value for the amount of entertainment. There were about 25 bands performing over the 4 days of the festival and most played 2 sets or one 90 minute set. That works out to about $4 or $5 per band as the festival ticket is $110 advance for the 4 days. They have, in the past 3 or 4 years, required all campers who have sewer and 50 amp electric to purchase a 7 day camping spot, and are now starting the same process on other spots. I was not on board with this at first, but have come to realize that it costs more to get the top bands and they recently built a state of the art timber peg stage area at considerable expense, and have upgraded the roads, picnic tables and other areas of the campground to make the festival one of the top ones in the country. So if you are a camper, an outlay of about $500 will get you a premium campsite for 7 days and 2 tickets for the 4 day festival, still a bargain for a week’s vacation in these tough economic times. In addition, they have eliminated the “funny money” so many attendees were upset about. able presence of SMBA members in attendance at the May festival, perhaps more than in recent memory, and possibly because they chose Gettysburg instead of traveling to a venue further away to save on fuel. As bluegrass lovers we are very lucky to have so many top tier events within a 100 or so mile radius of our area, both indoor concerts and festivals. Please support the event (s) of your choice and attend whenever you can. It is getting harder and harder for the musicians to make a living and supporting them helps keep them out there and the events more plentiful and professional. Fuel costs have made it very hard to travel, especially the top tier bands, who have and need tour buses to cover the miles they have to travel across our vast country. The life of a musician is not an easy one and one has to really love the music and the lifestyle to make the commitment to be a fulltime bluegrass musician and an even greater commitment to take on the challenges of being a band leader. I hope that the uncertainty of our economy does not do irreparable harm to the music that we love and the concerts, and festivals that we attend. Our own concert series has been particularly well attended this past concert season. It has been one of our best and I can only hope that this continues. We have strived to get the best top tier bands out there for our concert series and next year we have a particularly strong lineup for our shows. Please support our SMBA concert series starting in October. Being close to our area means a low cost fuel bill getting there and back also. Officer Position Elections - Nominations for 2012 Election Year The Nominations Committee recommends to the Board the following people be nominated for the 2012 Election Year: Dick Beckley President, Mike Lebo Vice President, Bill Coleman Secretary, and Jean Snyder Treasurer. Each of the nominees has agreed to having their name listed for the positions indicated. Marlin Henry - SBMA President 1993-1998 Marlin E. Henry, 69, of Dillsburg, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at his home. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Leah A. (Smith) Henry. His tenure as president was the longest of all, serving five years. He introduced many great bands at our shows at Fishing Creek. Marlin was a retired employee of IBEW Local 143. As president he sought to welcome newcomers to our jams and encouraged their participation. For a few years, he held an annual SMBA jam/picnic at his home. Marlin had collected and stored an extensive library of SMBA memorabilia. Marlin had almost a permanent smile as he was one of the friendliest people ever. Not only friendly but willing to share his home weekly as a place to jam for years. He was willing to play and jam with anyone. His gospel group Good News played at various churches and public outings. His presence will be missed by all.
