2015 Expo Program Guide
Show Directory & Program Guide | May 9, 2015 | Allen County War Memorial Coliseum WELCOME Welcome to the 6th annual disAbilities Expo! This day has been planned just for you with more than 90 exhibitors to make this a one-stop resource for all types of disability services and products. We hope that you find what you need, and even more importantly, discover new resources to enhance your quality of life. The Expo is also filled with fun and entertaining events, spectacular adaptive sports exhibitions and special guests making a difference in the disability world. We welcome special guests Mark Wellman and Brett Eastburn to this year’s Expo. For the sports enthusiast, Paralympian and rock climber Mark Wellman will amaze you with his climbing ability and invite you to make your own ascents using his adaptive climbing equipment. Then laugh with comedian Brett Eastburn as he entertains and truly inspires you. As 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we are mindful of how this landmark piece of legislation created opportunities and rights for individuals with disabilities. But there is still more work to do. While at the Expo, stop by the ADA Report Card booth to take a survey of how well northeast Indiana is doing in making and creating an accessible community. The survey results will be presented to the public in late July. You are also invited to participate in a survey about Riverfront Fort Wayne, the exciting riverfront development project now in the planning stages. City representatives want to hear your thoughts and ideas about the proposed project, as well as what accessibility to the riverfront means to you. Helping you explore opportunities, expand possibilities and experience everything is what the disAbilities Expo is all about. Spend a few hours or the entire day...we’re glad you are here! In 1982, a freak mountain climbing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, but he was determined to climb back to the adventurous outdoor life he loved. And he did by making two historic ascents of the El Capitan and Half Dome granite walls in Yosemite National Park, competing in two Paralympics on the United States disabled Ski Team and becoming the first paraplegic to sit-ski across the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Mark returns to the Expo by popular demand with his rock wall and invites climbers of all abilities to make their own ascents using his adaptive climbing equipment. Mark Wellman lives in Northern California where he operates his business, No Limits. Whether training for new wilderness adventures, or to break down barriers or from college campuses to corporate boardrooms, he has become a nationally known influence for the disabled and able-bodied alike. With his dynamic style and bold determination, Mark continues to encourage his audiences to fulfill their dreams by reaching for higher goals to success. He is energetic and enthusiastic and sure to inspire you! Cheer on Turnstone teams as they demonstrate their athletic prowess and their winning ways. Wheelchair Basketball Enjoy the competition while watching the Turnstone wheelchair basketball teams dribble and shoot with amazing accuracy! The Prep Division team is for 8-12 year olds and the Varsity Division team is for 13-18 year olds with both teams known as the Flyers. Turnstone’s Division III team, the Bandits, is for the 18+ year old group. Each team is a member of the NWBA and play in tournaments across the country as they vie for a national championship. Each team has a rich history of success. The Bandits have won 3 conference championships along with finishing 3rd in the nation four times and runner-up twice. The Varsity team has won 5 conference championships, 4 regional championships and finished the last 14 seasons in the top 20 with their top ranking being 3rd. The Prep team has won 3 conference championships, finished 3rd at nationals twice along with achieving runnerup status. Don’t miss seeing this group of talented athletes! Sitting Volleyball Enjoy a demonstration game of sitting volleyball with Steve Doudt. Growing up in New Haven, this Indiana native was a member of the U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball team for seven years and is a 1996 Sitting Volleyball Paralympian. While playing volleyball, he also enjoyed many great years playing wheelchair basketball for the Indiana Pacers/Racers. As Steve winds down his athletic careers to enjoy retired life, he continues to be a basketball official in the NWBA. Wheelchair Fencing En garde! Witness the art of using a foil, épée and saber in attack and defense by wheelchair fencing champion Catherine Bouwkamp. A former able-bodied fencer who was nationally ranked in the Y12 and Y10 age groups, Bouwkamp was born with fibular hemimelia – a condition in which the muscles in her right leg never fully developed. Her experience as an able-bodied fencer helped Catherine earn quick success on the international wheelchair scene where she won National Championships in all three weapons as a 14-year-old in 2010 and defended all three golds in 2011, 2012, and 2013. In 2011, Bouwkamp won gold in foil at the Wheelchair Pan American Championships and qualified for the 2012 Paralympic Games as the youngest member of Team USA. She placed 12th in the London Paralympic Games and vowed to be back for another set of Paralympic Games and make it to the podium. In 2013, Bouwkamp earned a bronze medal in her favored weapon, saber, at World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Whether new to fencing or an experienced sportsmen, you will enjoy Catherine’s display of fencing skill and technique. Wheelchair Curling Known as “chess on ice”, the sport of curling was introduced to Fort Wayne in the 1880’s by Scottish tradesmen hired to build the Bass Mansion, which is now owned by the University of Saint Francis. The sport died out during the Great Depression but was reintroduced to Fort Wayne in 2010 under very different circumstances. Founders Craig Fischer and Jerri Mead were looking for an activity their entire family could do together and would also appeal to their son, Grayson, who is autistic. It was while watching the 2006 Winter Olympics that the idea of curling occurred to them. For several months the family drove two hours (one way) to Bowling Green, Ohio, which had the closest curling facility. Curling was a hit with the whole family, so much so that they decided to organize a not-for-profit Curling Club. Today the Fort Wayne Curling Club is considered the most dynamic club in the United States, and is now aspiring to another accolade -- establish curling as a Special Olympics sport. With the help of adaptive equipment, curlers with physical and/or intellectual disabilities can easily play the game. Curling not only provides moderate physical activity, it also develops concentration and self-esteem, along with socialization. Stop by the Sports Center for a demonstration and try it yourself. 6 – 2015 disAbilities Expo www.disAbilitiesExpoIndiana.org An Introduction to Medicaid Waivers What are Medicaid Waivers? • Medicaid Waivers allow Medicaid to fund supports and services for children and adults with disabilities in their family homes or communities instead of institutions. • Medicaid Waivers allow an individual to use traditional Medicaid services AND the additional services available under a waiver. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS www.columbusorg.com | 800.229.5116 “I want people to know that even if you have a disability you still have a future.” Nathaniel Boutelle When President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, he said, “Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down.” While there is still work to be done, great progress has been made to remove barriers to education, transportation, employment and other aspects of daily life. Take for example Nathaniel Boutelle, who has autism. With the support of Passages, Inc. in Columbia City, he is able to live to his full potential – working, volunteering and excelling as a photographer and artist. Because of the ADA, Nathaniel has the opportunity to be an asset to his community, and for him, that’s a dream come true. See more of Nathaniel’s story at awsfoundation.org/ADA25. Kammy Updegrove Back when Kammy Updegrove was born in the 1960s, there were limited opportunities for therapy and education for someone with Down syndrome — and virtually no support services. Through her parents’ dedication and her own determination to learn and grow, Kammy overcame those obstacles and realized her full potential. As an adult, thanks to Pathfinder Services and strides made by the ADA, Kammy was able to achieve many of her goals, including holding jobs, living independently, traveling, and learning sign language. More recently, facing a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Kammy’s family and friends have celebrated her life and accomplishments — and continue to cherish her warmth and good humor. See more of Kammy’s story at awsfoundation.org/ADA25. CELEBRATING YEARS ADA Proud to support the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ADA. Thanks for coming!
