Media Interviews
THE USA PRO CHALLENGE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER! It is an exciting
time for Montrose as the host city for Stage Two of the race. Not only will lots of professional cyclists and visitors be converging on our city for the race, there will also be throngs of
media making their way to Montrose, as well.
With the media spotlight shining bright on Montrose this summer, we thought it was a good
time to remind everyone of the protocol regarding media interview requests. If the reporter
is doing a story about the Pro Cycle Challenge, please ask them to contact City Manager Bill
Bell (970-240-1400) or Montrose ACT Executive Director Jenni Sopsic (970-708-1182).
If the story is about something specific to your business or industry, of course, you should
respond! This is a great opportunity for you to get publicity for your business and to share
your expertise. If you do respond to a media request, it is always appreciated that you contact
Jenni Sopsic to advise her about the interview. Often, reporters go to more than one source on
a story, so it’s nice to alert give the city a “head’s up!” on anything tourism-related.
Here are three tips to keep in mind when doing media interviews:
1. Be timely. Reporters work in a deadline-driven world. When you are contacted by a journalist, you should respond immediately. Inquire what the deadline is, what the subject of the
article is, and ask if you can call them back (this gives you time to prepare). Then, call back at
the agreed-upon time.
2. Be prepared. Once you know what the topic of the interview is, you can prepare your key
points. Then, during the interview, no matter what question is asked, you can use bridging
phrases to relate back to your main ideas. Examples of good bridging phrases include, “And let
me add…”, “It’s important to remember…”, and, “For example…”.
3. Be concise. Don’t let your responses ramble. Be clear and concise and keep your answers to
about 30 seconds or no more than a minute. That’s all the media can use, and if you don’t edit
yourself, they will do it for you!

Leadership Montrose Class of 2012 graduated 21 participants on Friday, June 15, 2012.
Over 50 alumni and dignitaries attended the graduation luncheon at the Holiday Inn Express
& Suites. Keynote speakers District Attorney Dan Hotsenpiller, District Attorney’s Office for
the Seventh Judicial District, and Executive Director Mike King, Colorado Department of
Natural Resources (and a Montrose High School Alumni), addressed the class with their
thoughts on leadership and the art of collaboration.

A big shout out to the Redcoats, the
“worker bees” in our community. Without
their hard work, many events just would
not come off. The most recent member
list, provided by Redcoats President Denise
Swanson, shows group enrollment at 33
members with four lifetime members.
This is a great organization that would
welcome new members to help carry their
heavy load. Check into getting involved
with the Redcoats.
Give your local business neighbors the
best shot at your business. I have heard
several times in the last month, “I can get it
cheaper online.” This does not surprise me,
simply from the scale of economics. Just
remember who supports the community.
Don’t be afraid to tell a local business that
you want to keep your money local, and I
am sure that you can all come to a happy
medium to accomplish that goal.
Longtime and outgoing Steering Committee Member Elsa Anderson (City of Montrose) was
acknowledged for her numerous contributions to the program over the years, and Program
Facilitator and Steering Committee Member Sue Hansen (Sue Hansen Speaks) was recognized for her invaluable presence and her ability to lead by example.
The Program
Leadership Montrose (formerly the Uncompahgre Valley Leadership Program) was
developed in response to the growing need for quality leadership. A few citizens passionate
about Montrose created a leadership program to prepare and inform new leaders on community affairs. Since its inception in 1996, Leadership Montrose has provided
hundreds of participants with a glimpse into the infrastructure, qualities, and character-istics
of our community.
Great leaders must know and understand the key issues affecting the community in which
they serve. Leadership Montrose, a program of the Montrose Association of Commerce &
Tourism, is designed to develop leadership potential and provide essential learning in a
dynamic and interactive format, with the goal to stimulate emerging leaders to think,
challenge, and innovate.
Simply stated, our leaders need to be knowledgeable and innovative while preserving the
special features of the place we call home. The Leadership Montrose program is designed to
do just that.
If you love Montrose County and the surrounding area, consider applying for the Leadership
Montrose Class of 2013. You may be new to Montrose, or you may have realized that you
want to contribute to making our community even better. What better way to learn about
your community than to enroll in a program exposing you to the critical components that
structure our community? Montrose has a unique mixture of tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, and retail—and we have our share of concerns with natural resources, education, and
supporting a thriving business economy. These issues—and many more—will be addressed in

the Montrose County Board of Commissioners
unanimously passed a resolution on May 31st
restricting open fire, fireworks, contained open fires
and public firework displays in all unincorporated
areas of Montrose County (not including public lands). The fire restrictions are effective immediately until further notice from the Board of
County Commissioners.
The city is constantly working to expand the quality and variety of online

· Sales and Use Tax Reports: Sales and use tax revenue is one of the
best indicators of the health of our local economy. This new Notify Me

construction activity within the city. Subscribers will receive links to the
latest listing of building permits issued by the city, as well as year-to-date

“This is not a knee-jerk reaction to the Sunrise Mine Fire on the West
End,” said Sheriff Rick Dunlap. “I’m suggesting the County put these fire
restrictions in place because the fire probability is high on the Uncompahgre Plateau and extreme in the Uncompahgre Valley due to the amount of
moisture in these areas. This data was supplied to us from the BLM and
Forest Service.”
This resolution does not affect the City of Montrose or the Town of
Olathe. Nucla and Naturita have fire restrictions that were enacted by
Nucla and Naturita Fire Department the week of May 27th.

The Montrose Community Foundation is pleased to
put the art of collaboration in practice as we partner
with the San Juan Healthcare Foundation this
summer as we grow our capacity to meet the needs
of our local community. Here is the plan.
One artist. Nationally-renowned Montrose artist, Gregory Packard, has
donated an original oil painting entitled “West Fork Summit.” The artist’s
depiction of a recognizable vantage point of Cimarron Creek embodies
Packard’s artistic statement, “Painting to me is about the personal
connections we make with all of creation, a language that corresponds
directly with how we see and interpret the world around us and within us.”
Two foundations. The Montrose Community Foundation,“committed to
growing a strong community” and the San Juan Healthcare Foundation
striving to “look to the future and what will serve the healthcare needs
in our community” are among the community’s most long-standing and
respected charities. Each meets the needs of the community in both large
and small ways.
Many sponsors. You are invited to sponsor the hanging of this painting
where it will permanently reside in the admissions area of the Montrose
Memorial Hospital. Alongside this prominent piece will be a plaque
recognizing those donors who have contributed more than $500 jointly to
the foundations. Sponsors will also be honored at a “Hanging Party” later
this summer.
