The Newport County Chamber of Commerce is also
pleased to announce a reorganization in staff
responsibilities as a result of the growing

members. Based on member input, position titles
and responsibilities have been realigned to reflect
what our members have clearly indicated are

The past several months have been the most
devastating that most of us have seen in our
lifetime. Our hearts go out to the people of the
Gulf Coast Region. Death, destruction,
separation from family, more than one can
comprehend. With hurricanes one after
another, it is incomprehensible and beyond our
understanding, yet as we look around,
Americans from Coast to Coast are opening
their homes and businesses to help their
neighbors even if they are 1500 miles away. We
have all seen story after story of the devastation
our brethren have experienced.
As Chairman of the Board of the Newport
County Chamber of Commerce, I personally
ask that you give what you can afford to your
church, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army or
any organization you hold dear to your hearts. Hopefully, we will never see this
again. It’s a time to give to those who are family in our country.

O’Dea King-Kahn, Litwin, Renza, Michaeline Saladyga-Newport Hospitality and
Don Troppoli-Sovereign Bank. As your involvement grows, you will all have an
opportunity to meet these new members.
This year, 2005-2006 will be another of great year of Chamber accomplishments.
We are involved in economic development and planning projects in all communities
in Newport County. Through the leadership of our Executive Director, Keith
Stokes, the Chamber has secured hundreds of thousands of dollars for economic
development in these communities.
On another note…
I would also like to congratulate the Ambassador committee for completing their
second annual “Rebuilding Together” project as well as their Second Annual
Lobster Bake to raise the money for the project for April 2006. You should all be
commended for your hard work and a job well done!
On another subject…
I’d like to welcome six new members to the Board of Directors. Over the past
several years while serving on the nominating committee I have never screened 24
nominations for the Board. Twenty -four candidates, all well qualified individuals,
wanted to be a part of the third largest Chamber in the state. With over twelve
hundred member companies and hundreds and hundreds of member employees it

Chamber Gift Certificates
On Wednesday, September 7th a group of business
leaders from the Newport County Chamber of
Commerce along with other Rhode Island business
leaders, joined Senator Jack Reed for his annual
Rhode Island Business Leaders Day in Washington.
Attendees were briefed by top federal elected and
administrative officials in Washington DC on issues
including homeland security, workforce development,
transportation and healthcare reform.
The Newport County Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Fairfield Resorts for the purchase of
5200 Chamber Gift Certificates over the summer. Fairfield Resorts is using Chamber Gift certificates as
an incentive for potential customers who are interested in purchasing time-shares. “Fairfield Resorts
wanted to let the community know that we are a part of this city and purchasing Chamber gift
certificates as opposed to gift certificates from national restaurant chains, gives back to the businesses in
the area and establishes Fairfield as a member in the community.” Stated Melissa White, Administrative
Manager for Fairfield’s Newport County properties.
Guest speakers for the day included: the Honorable
Lee H. Hamilton (Vice Chair of the 9/11
Commission), George Stephanopoulos Anchor of
ABC’s Sunday this week and New York Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Chamber Businesses enrolled in the program have seen an influx of gift certificates come through their
business. “Having the Fairfield Resort in the neighborhood has been a great bonus. They are a
wonderful quality business and they generate a lot of traffic in this area. We are pleased that they would
think of us and get involved in this program. We do see quite a few of the gift certificates and we are
grateful for every one of them and thank Fairfield for their participation and thinking of this program”
stated Ralph Plumb owner of Brick Alley Pub.
The Chamber also invited the town administrators
from Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth to join
the program along with representatives from the
Chamber Board of Directors and Chamber staff. The
Aquidneck Island delegation also met with senior
officials from the US Department of Commerce,
Economic Development Administration to discuss
community and economic development grant
opportunities for Aquidneck Island.

Chamber Gift Certificate Program
President of the New England Council Speaks at Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Update Luncheon
The Newport County Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Update Luncheon Forum on August
24th featured guest speaker James T. Brett, President and Chief Executive Officer of the New England
Council.
Mr. Brett began his speech by recognizing the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation for their
outstanding work in Washington. He gave an overview of economic issues of importance to the New
England region, which included details on Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), transportation and
energy. He also spoke of the three priorities of the council for this fall which are the recent Base
Realignment and Closure and continuing to protect New England, the Terrorism and Risk Insurance Bill
and the Research and Development Tax Credit. James T. Brett has been serving as President and CEO of
the Council since 1996.

The New England Council is an 80-year-old organization, which serves as New England’s voice on Capitol
Hill. They are dedicated to identifying and supporting federal public policies and articulating the voice of
its membership regionally and nationally on important issues facing New England. For more information

For the year 2005, a donation has been made to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. A check in
the amount of $800 was presented to Amanda Fry Leinhos, Executive Director of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Community Center. “It's wonderful to be selected for such an honor by such a great community champion as
Richard Sardella. He is a great role model for the rest of the business community. This donation will put food in
peoples’ mouths and support almost 18 families this Thanksgiving," stated Leinhos. The Newport County Chamber

As the new Chair of the Ambassador’s Committee, I would like to personally thank
Ron Grandchamp for his many years of hard work and dedication to the
Committee and wish him all the best as he begins his term as Chairman of the
Board.
September was a big month for the Ambassador Committee, punctuated by the
second annual “House the Chamber Re-built” Lobster Bake at Kempenaar’s
Clambake Club, where 150 people attended, enjoying great food, company,
surroundings, and great music from Abbey Rhode. The event successfully raised
the $2,500 required to sponsor next year’s Rebuilding Together project; a heart-felt
thanks to attendees and sponsors.
The Ambassador Committee’s mission is to get new members acquainted with the
existing membership and the resources the Chamber has to offer, as well as, seek
out and organize community out-reach projects, in which member businesses and
their employees participate. Being an Ambassador is a great way to meet new
members and deepen relationships with existing members. It is also a great way to
give back to the community.

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training is able to offer employers
alternatives to layoffs during a temporary slowdown in business. WorkSharing
allows you to keep employees on the payroll by having all of the workers in a
department or unit share reduced work hours and collect a percentage of
unemployment Insurance Benefits for up to 52 weeks. For more information

US SAILING, national governing body for the sport, announced today that the
U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Team Trials for the 2008 Olympic and
Paralympic Games will be held in October 2007 in two parts of the country:
Southern California and Rhode Island.
The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology has a busy fall schedule with events of
appeal to all ages. They will celebrate their annual celebration of the harvest with
Honoring the Harvest on Saturday, November 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy
Native American singing, dancing, and story telling; play Native American games;
learn about traditional harvest foods, and much more. The event is free to all
Bristol residents, for all others, it is free with admission to the museum ($3 for
adults; $2 for seniors; $1 for children). For further information on other

The Portsmouth Art Guild is having a fall members show at Aquidneck Place, 125
Quaker Hill Lane, Portsmouth, RI. The opening reception is Saturday, Oct.29, 58pm. The exhibit runs through Nov. 13 and entails exhibits and sale of art works
by members of the Portsmouth Art Guild. Exhibit hours are 12-7:30pm on
weekdays and 12-5pm on weekends. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Marketing committee met in September and received a brief economic project
update from Keith Stokes, Chamber Executive Director. It was decided that the
third in our Quarterly Economic Update Series would be a panel consisting of
representatives from some of the local economic development projects. The
committee will meet again in November to begin reviewing ways to most effectively
promote Chamber programs and services.
The Fleming Group would like to announce a new Class A Professional office
building on East Main Road in Portsmouth. The building will be 9000 square feet
of office space located in an enterprise zone. Construction of the building will
begin in November of 2005 and will include a flexible floor plan, full handicap

Hopefully, all of our members had an enjoyable and prosperous summer. After a
summer break, our Membership Committee resumed its' monthly meetings in
September. In addition to enhancing existing programs and building on the overall
value of your membership dollar, the committee's goal is to introduce a major new
program/service to benefit Chamber members in '05-'06. We are working on details
for a "new & improved" Health Savings Account (H.S.A.) service that the Chamber
would offer through a RI-based broker. This type of program would offer
substantial cost savings to employees (particularly those that work for small
employers, since many large employers already have such a benefit in place), while
also serving as a strong benefit and "selling point" for employers in this very
competitive labor market. So stay tuned...we will be announcing a seminar date
this Fall to give you more information about this program. Also, to keep your
businesses' competitive juices flowing, in Spring '06 the Chamber is planning on
holding a 1st (and hopefully annual thereafter) "Best of Newport County" Awards
Luncheon, which will feature peer voting, resulting in honors such as "Best Small
Business", "Entrepreneur of the Year",etc. More details to follow. Last and
certainly not least, please mark your calendars for Friday, November 18th. Saddle
up them ponies and head on over to The 12th Annual Dinner Dance & Silent
Auction which will be held with plenty of fixins at the Dude Ranch (a.k.a.Hyatt
Regency Newport), featuring a rootin'tootin' good time, a "Night in the Wild Wild

Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. BankNewport’s
campaign included three major components: an
immediate contribution on September 8th of $100,000
to the American Red Cross, and a pledge of $100,000
to match a potential goal of $100,000 in donations
from the community. All BankNewport branches
served as collection locations to receive donations
from the community. At the conclusion of the drive
on September 30, 2005, the Bank received contributions totaling $130,132.43, with totals designated by
the community in the amounts of $116,433.31 for the
American Red Cross and a total of $13,699.12 for the
Salvation Army.

President & CEO. Smith has
served as Interim President of the
organization since August 2004. In
this role, Smith is charged with
fulfilling the mission of the
NCCVB- to promote Newport
County as a premiere destination
for leisure and business travel and

The sales team at the Newport County Convention &
Visitors Bureau has been recognized as one of the

by two prestigious industry publications. The organization has been awarded the Successful Meetings
Pinnacle Award and the Meetings & Conventions
Gold Service Award, in separate award programs
voted on by the discerning readers of the publications.
The awards are determined by the readers of the
magazines corporate and association executives, with
meeting planning responsibilities based on their
professional experiences with convention & visitors
bureaus worldwide. This marks the third year that the
Newport CVB has been selected for the Pinnacle
Award, and the second time the organization has
achieved the Gold Service Award.

Ah, this modern age
of communications!
Have you ever had
problems with your
computer software
where it is not
functioning as
designed and you
have a deadline to
meet on a major
project? I think
most of us have, at
least most of us over
30. So, as a last
resort, you call your software company’s “help”
number, as quickly as if you were calling you next-door
neighbor. Chances are, your call is answered by a
software technician in India or Pakistan, and as though
he wrote the “word” programs himself, after
describing the problem, he immediately leads you
through the routines to clear up your problem and
VOILA! you are back in business.
Most of us have images of India and Pakistan as
countries of abject poverty. We remember the
television news coverage of Mother Theresa, a very
holy and “gutsy” Indian nun, along with her order of
nuns devoted to helping the poor masses in these two
countries that were ruled as one colony by the British
Empire until well after World War II. Very little of
that poverty exists today except, perhaps in remote

villages of the northern mountains. As rulers of
colonies, the British recognized that to maintain good
order they had to establish an educated and trusted
bureaucracy among the native populations.
When the British withdrew from this colony in the
nineteen fifties, the role of leadership basically was
passed to the native members of the established
bureaucracy. This educated bureaucracy recognized
that to continue to survive and prosper, it must
emphasize education among its people. And so they
have.
India is predominately Hindu while Pakistan is a
Muslim country. Not long after the one British colony
was granted freedom, devastating battles were waged
between the two, mainly over religious animosity and
intolerance. Thus the one colony is now two
countries. The animosity between the two countries
continues to this day with both conducting occasional
terrorist attacks of violence against the other. A truly
frightening thought is that both have developed
nuclear weapon. Even more frightening is the news
that Pakistan is believed to have sold weapons-making
quality uranium to Ian and North Korea in violation of
international law.
Knowing the recent history of these two countries
gives us a better appreciation of the importance of
these emerging economic competitors in the international scene. What brings all this background to mind
is a recent article by Om Malik in the July issue of
Business 2.0 Magazine entitled The New Land of
Opportunity- It’s a Global Economy, So Quit Whining
About Outsourcing. India's Booming Middle Class
has
$420 Billion to Spend. Here’s How to Grab Your
Share.
The author basically states that India has one of the
fastest growing economies in the world. The average
citizen of India knows very little about America but is
quickly learning. American fast food chains are there,
their TV’s carry CNBC, HBO and MTV. “The Indian
middle class is easier to target because people speak
English and have a Western orientation,” says Rory
Cowan, president of Lionbridge Technologies, which
sells database translation software through Asia.
Malik states that there are downsides to penetrating
the Indian market, such as an unstable government
that changes players often, the residents of India’s 28
states speak 17 major languages and practice 7
religions.
With all the present negatives about doing business
with India, why should the businesses of Newport
County and Rhode Island be interested in this
country? As this article states, “India’s middle class
has $420 million to spend and this figure is growing
rapidly.” As the Indians become more prosperous and
learn more about America through cable TV, movies
and magazines and by shopping in American chain
stores, it is likely that many will want to visit Newport
and other parts of Rhode Island, as so many people of
all classes in other countries have done. But, when the
time is right the Newport area must be properly
promoted in India.

Newport County Interfaith Hospitality Network, is a
temporary shelter program for families made
homeless by emergencies. Family Promise, a nonprofit organization of faith communities and service

backpacks and school supplies were given to children in
