Local Radio Station KSBR Invites Listeners To Support Mission Hospital Teen South
County Safe Rides Program
KSBR invited Georgi Mercado, Mission Hospitals’ trauma
services injury prevention outreach coordinator, to hit the
local radio waves and tell listeners about South County Safe
Rides. During the interview Georgi made a plea for more
adult volunteers. Although South County Safe Rides main
goal is provide a safe ride home to local teens in need, adults
are also key members of the team. Adults are required to
supervise the nightly operations along with youth leaders and
trained volunteers.
It was February 27, 26 years ago, that a teenage driver on his
way to a dance with four friends crashed his car head on into
another car carrying a family of three. The teenage driver had
been drinking. Three people died at the scene, and five
others were seriously injured. Out of that tragedy came a
greater awareness of and urgency around the problem of
teenage drinking and driving. Out of that tragedy, South
County Safe Rides was born.
While South County Safe Rides strives to keep drinking teens
off the road, it is also a great peer-to-peer tool at work to
change the mind-set among our youth about early prevention
and making good choices. As Georgi explained to local radio
listeners, the Safe Rides program strives to be part of the
solution, working to actively support our youth who are trying
to bring about positive life-saving changes.
Last year South County Safe Rides celebrated its 20th year of
success, transporting 746 teens safely home who were in
need. The program operates from 9:30 pm to 1:30 am on
Friday and Saturday nights during the school year. Adult
volunteers must complete a training, youth protection program
and can schedule themselves according to availability.
Safe Rides is a lasting example of our commitment to
improving the health and quality of life of those in the
communities we serve. If you would like more information on
becoming involved as a volunteer or donor of financial or inkind services, contact Georgi Mercado at (949) 374-7754.

2013 Chief Of Staff
In The OC Register: Mission Hospital
Puts The Heat On Asthma
In January, Todd Lempert, MD, a boardcertified radiologist who specializes in
neuro-interventional radiology,
neuroradiology and interventional
radiology, became Mission Hospital’s Chief
of Staff for the 2013 calendar year. Dr.
Lempert has been an active member
of the medical staff, participating in a variety of leadership
activities, including serving on the Mission Hospital Board of
Directors.
Dr. Robert Goldberg, board certified
pulmonologist with MIMG, was featured with
a patient last week in the Orange County
Register. The article chronicled the
successful new treatment called bronchial
thermoplasty, which provides life long relief
of severe asthma symptoms to adults 18
and over. Mission Hospital is the first and
only hospital in the Orange and San Diego
counties to offer this ground breaking outpatient procedure.
In addition to his published work regarding extensive
research studies, Dr. Lempert also co-authored two
Neuroradiology textbooks and lectures frequently on stroke
treatment. He is the inventor of a closure device for
percutaneous occlusion of puncture sites and tracts.

Supporting Those Who Support Us
The theme for the 2013 National
Social Work month, during March, is
“Weaving Threads of Resilience and
Advocacy.” Social workers believe
that helping people navigate difficult
environments, while respecting their innate strengths,
improves lives. Here at Mission Hospital, social workers
help patients and families in outpatient and inpatient
areas, behavioral health, in the ED, Bridges program,
community benefit and palliative care. Recognize a
social worker in your area this month.
