First-time Partnership for Dream Home Lottery
Volume 8 Issue 2 • Saturday, September 20, 2008 First-time Partnership for Dream Home Lottery 2009 Bluewater Health Foundation and Breast Cancer Society of Canada A new and inventive way of funding has materialized and for the first time ever, the Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC) is partnering with Bluewater Health Foundation in support of the Foundation’s biggest fundraiser, Dream Home Lottery, 2009. The Breast Cancer Society has generously committed to match dollar-for-dollar all profit raised in this year’s Dream Home Lottery. In other words, the value of every $100 ticket sold after expenses are paid will actually be $200. The Foundation has a goal to raise $275,000 which means a matching gift from the Breast Cancer Society of Canada of $275,000 for a total of funds raised of $550,000. “This is a tremendous gift”, stated Jack Pasternak, President, of Bluewater Health Foundation. “On behalf of the patients and staff of Bluewater Health and the Foundation I thank BCSC for this important gift and the unique way in which you have chosen to give it. It is our duty to invest in health care for the next generation and the Breast Cancer society of Canada is living that mission”. “This gift is two-fold”, stated Liz Kenny, Executive Director, Bluewater Health Foundation. “It helps us to provide our hospital with state-of-the–art diagnostic equipment and it gives us $250,000 for mammography equipment and the breast assessment unit. It’s Your Choice, the Dream Home or $300,000 Cash! The funding this year will be used in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, specifically to help in the purchase of two Digital Mammography Stations. “As a national organi- zation across Canada, our goal is to help in the fight against breast cancer in any way that we can, and we are pleased locally to partner with the Bluewater Health Foundation in their Dream Home Lottery. With our matching the proceeds dollar-for-dollar, it is our hope that all the tickets will be sold. The society has been pushing for a number of years to have breast assessment units in hospitals to provide women with a well-defined process from start to finish, from the first suspicion of a problem through to treatment. The new Digital Mammography Equipment will aid greatly in these endeavors”, stated Paddy Roach, President, Breast Cancer Society of Canada and Board Chair. “The Breast Cancer Society is proud to carry on the legacy that began in 1991 by the friends and family of Pamela Greenaway-Kohlmeier and to strengthen our roots where we live and work. Our commitment to match the proceeds from the Dream Home Lottery will help to ensure that our local community has the latest technology in breast cancer detection”, added Sherry Johnston, Executive Director, Breast Cancer Society of Canada. This gift will complement past gifts from BCSC to the hospital foundation. Previous to the announcement of this gift, they gave It’s another first this year, the winner of the grand prize in the 2009 Dream Home Lottery will have the option of $300,000 cash or the dream home. The Bluewater Health Foundation’s volunteer lottery committee is offering the cash as a third option; you can move in, sell the home or take the cash! All winnings, regardless of which option you choose, are income tax free. Dream Home 2009 is currently under construction in Heritage Park Estates, a subdivision located at the corner of Modeland and Confederation. It will have an approximate value of $375,000. The Early Bird Draw is January 28, 2009, when 300 prizes of a $100 lottery ticket are awarded. The final draw date is February 28, 2009, where the dream home winning ticket is chosen and 173 cash prizes are given out. Tickets at $100 each are available at all hospital sites, area banks and credit unions as well as other businesses around town. Open houses run from November 29, 2008, to February 22, 2009, every Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. by Nadine Wark Digital Mammography Equipment…what’s it all about? In late September, Bluewater Health’s Diagnostic Imaging Department will welcome new digital equipment. We are very excited to be able to offer this state of the art technology to the women of Sarnia-Lambton. Installation at the Mitton Site is planned for late September and the other good news is that these units will be relocated with the department in the new hospital. “We are extremely pleased with the community support for this project and are thrilled that the Breast Cancer Society has come forward to partner with us,” said Marilyn Williams, Director of Medical Imaging. This advanced equipment offers many new features and benefits: • Patients will receive approximately half the dose of radiation to their breasts • More options will be available to visualize dense breast tissue found in some women • An average mammogram takes approximately 15 minutes and with the new digital units, the time will reduce to around 7 minutes. • A film digitizer will change the patient’s previous film mammogram into digital format for easier comparison to the current digital images • Quick retrieval and no need for film storage space or a film processor • The images will be accessible to all physicians on the computer archiving system An additional tool is the computer-aided detection (CAD), which provides a second look at the mammogram, which may direct the Radiologist to re-evaluate a region of the breast. Data can easily be enhanced, magnified, or brightness and contrast can be changed, similar to that done with a digital camera, resulting in fewer callbacks for repeat testing. Earlier detection of cancers will be possible. One staff member commented that it was like changing from black and white television to high definition! Adelle Richards of Sarnia can speak first-hand about what this new equipment will mean to women. She had breast cancer not only once, but twice and due to early detection, did not need complete mastecto- Pictured above from left are: Peggy Mackie, Senior Medical Radiation Technologist, Mammography Department, Bluewater Health; Adelle Richards, Breast Cancer Survivor; Marilyn Williams, Director, Diagnostic Imaging, Bluewater Health. mies, however, did endure two lumpectomies and many radiation treatments and drug therapies. “I cannot stress enough the importance of women checking their breasts regularly themselves and also getting regular mammograms (Adelle found the first lump herself). I believe that all women deserve access to the best equipment and treatments available. For a woman, like myself, who has dense breast tissue, the new units will aid greatly in early detection. Also, it will be nice to eliminate the old film system and have everything computerized.” When the word ‘survivor’ is mentioned, she says, “Actually, I prefer the word ‘fighter’ rather than survivor, as the battle continues not only for me personally, but for women worldwide. It becomes a part of you. I see my role as continuing the battle, by learning more and as a spokesperson, educating and helping others”. Adelle explains, “I have been getting yearly mammograms since the age of 25 due to a family history of cancer and will continue to do so. The new Digital Mammography at Bluewater Health is another line of defense.” Peggy Mackie, Sr. Medical Radiation Technologist in the unit adds, ”I think the look and feel of the new units will make an uncomfortable experience more pleasant for women. The benefit to our patients is a big plus and our mammography technologists are eager to learn and use the latest technology. The digital machines are very impressive.” “As a volunteer in Mammography, my observation is that the department works as a cohesive group, offering compassion and understanding with each patient coming for their exam, and the team effort is easily recognizable. I have often heard it said, “that wasn’t so bad”, “this is really a pleasant place” and “those girls know what they are doing”. The new digital equipment will aid the technologists in having added confidence, pride and expertise in the job they do and the service they provide.”—Nadine Wark, volunteer Volume 8 Issue 2 • Saturday, September 20, 2008 • Page As the New Building Rises - Spirits Soar We have seen the shell of our new hospital building grow over the summer months as much of the foundation and structural concrete has been poured and steel erection continues – we’re progressing towards completion in 2011! “I am pleased to hear from many people how impressed they are with the development of the project to date,” said Tracy Gazarek, Project Manager, Facilities Planning and Development. “In speaking with our construction team, a relatively pleasant summer has helped us stay on-time in all areas of construction.” With the project now 25% complete and 150 workers on-site daily, interior renovations are also progressing well and visible signs of progress are everywhere. Work is ongoing in the morgue, 3rd Floor inpatient unit, kitchen, and information technology and services areas. Georgina Rogers, a patient on the Continuing Care Unit and who looks over the construction every day from the 4th Floor Lounge, says that she’s proud to be a part of such an important piece of Sarnia-Lambton’s history. “I’m amazed by how fast it’s progressing,” she said. “It’s fascinating to see every one at work. I think back to when it was a parking lot, and now it’s going to be a hospital. Many other patients watch the construction and we feel connected to what’s being built there.” Bluewater Health Foundation President • Jack Pasternak Vice-President • Sheila Chappell Past President • Phil Brown Secretary-Treasurer • Gord Bristo Board of Directors Greg Bond • John DeGroot Evelyn Dixon • Sylvia Foreman Barry Hogan Jr. • David Joy Len MacLachlan • Dorothy McKellar Gail Mitton • Jamie Pole Executive Director • Liz Kenny (519) 464-4438 Executive Assistant • Theresa Pettit (519) 464-4408 Donor Liaison • Lisa Waite (519) 464-4429 Foundation and Special Events Coordinator Johanne Tomkins (519) 464-4405 Planned Giving • Liz Kenny Coordinator, Business Centre • Theresa Pettit (519) 346-4704 Senior Development Officer Karen Holmes (519) 464-4439 Development Officer Maria Muscedere (519) 346-4706 Email: hospital@bluewaterhealth.ca Web Site: bluewaterhealthfoundation.ca Charitable Business #86939 4163 RR0001 Pulse is produced by Bluewater Health Foundation with support from the Community Relations Department of Bluewater Health. You Can “Buy Low and Give High” by giving shares In 2006, Revenue Canada gave Canadians a new incentive to give generously to charitable causes with the announcement of the elimination of capital gains tax on gifts of publicly traded securities (stock, bonds, mutual funds). Making your gift to Bluewater Health Foundation in the form of appreciated securities allows you to reduce the cost of your gift both in terms of your cash outlay, and through tax savings. Here’s how it works: Let’s assume that you are considering a gift of shares worth $10,000, and that the original purchase price was $2,000. Let’s as- sume you are in the top tax bracket (46.4%). Your gift of securities is valued as of the day the securities reach our account. It is quick and easy to transfer your gift to Bluewater Health Foundation. I wanted to do what I could to help raise the funds required to ensure that our hospital would be equipped with the latest hitech equipment available. I am honoured to serve Bluewater Health Foundation and will continue to do my part. Greg Bond Tr u s t w o r t h y, efficient and service orie n t e d institutions, like hospitals, are vital to the growth, attractiveness and happiness of any community. Practically, the way to achieve these goals is to raise money for state of the art equipment and the life long professional growth of all the staff. We, in Sarnia Lambton, have a history of moving forward together. I look forward to sharing this passion for excellence with you. Gord Bristo Secretary Treasurer Bluewater Health has served our family well. In both happy and sad times, the staff provided sympathetic, professional care along with helpful information. In many areas, they work in very difficult physical surroundings. As the new building rises, the greatly improved working conditions will allow them to do even more for our community residents and visitors. I am pleased to be a member of the Foundation that played a key role bringing this project to fruition. Phil Brown Past President S i x years ago, my mother passed away at the Mitton Site. This prompted me to get involved with Bluewater Health Foundation in the campaign for the new hospital. I stay involved because of the desire to ensure that our patients, staff and physicians can have the best equipment, technology and education that we can provide. I am constantly amazed with the generosity and support of this community. Sheila Chappell Vice President O u r quest to be the best community hospital in Ontario is hard work. In order to achieve and exceed that goal, we need highly talented staff, the finest facilities, and state of the art equipment. I am proud to assist and support Bluewater Health Foundation as it raises money to provide the equipment and training to excell. Simply put, I believe a strong vibrant hospital translates into a strong vibrant community. John DeGroot M y children and I have used the Emergency Department and have received excellent care since moving to Lambton County. As a nurse I became interested in seeing Bluewater Health achieve its mission statement and “be the best community hospital in Ontario.” I started as a volunteer on the community committee, then the hospital board prior to the Foundation. Health care is very important to me and I have seen many changes working in the medical field over 36 years. That is why I believe we can achieve great things with Bluewater Health because of all the great people working in the hospital. Evelyn Dixon “It may be a cliche, but volunteering at the hospital is really all about making time to understand and respond to the needs of an important part of our community. All of us bring different concerns and knowledge to the table, hoping we can help address the significant challenges health care faces today. Frequently, we come away impressed and awed at the level of devotion we see in hospital care, and that reinforces our belief in the system.......a reward in itself.” Sylvia Foreman Hospital Liaison Bluewater Health Offers Employees Access to State of the Art Reference System All Bluewater Health employees now have access to an online reference system produced by one of the world’s leaders in nursing information. The hospital recently acquired Mosby Nursing Skills from Elsevier. The state of the art reference system will help nurses refresh their knowledge or learn entirely new skills and procedures. It also includes supplementary material such as patient handouts. “As part of our efforts to be the best community hospital in Ontario, we’re committed to increasing learning opportunities for all of our staff,” said Lynn McEwen, Director, Profes- sional Practice. “This will be a tremendous resource.” Bluewater Health Foundation is proud to have purchased the Mosby System. We thank the community for your continued support, without which, this type of purchase would not be possible. With a young, growing f a m i l y, health care is very important to my family and to our community. I hope that by volunteering with Bluewater Health Foundation, I can help play a small role in making our community hospital the best community hospital for everyone in Sarnia Lambton. Everyone who volunteers at Bluewater Health plays a vital role in making our hospital what it is. Hospitals are a place that we hope we never need to use, but when we need to use it, we are glad that we have such a wonderful facility and staff! Barry M. Hogan Many of us take for granted the hospital services available to us. As the general population average age grows older, the frequency of visits and the expense of use increases and puts increasing financial pressure on federal, provincial, municipal governments and the community at large. Being part of the Health Foundation Board has helped me understand the need for private fundraising to finance the medical equipment and infrastructure which will enhance and improve the hospital services for the individual when they are required to rely on the hospital in a time of need. The community hospital is central to the quality of life we enjoy here in Sarnia. David Joy T h e community of Lambton County has been good to my family and me. It’s been enhanced by the volunteerism of generations before me. Good healthcare is essential to the health of our community. I feel that it is now my turn to lend a helping hand for the benefit of future generations, and I am honoured to do so. Len MacLachlan Every community needs to have a local hospital that is well equipped and well staffed. I am honoured to serve Bluewater Health Foundation as it assists in providing equipment and training for our Bluewater Health professionals on a daily basis. I shall continue to do my part as long as my part in needed. Dorothy McKellar Auxiliaries Liaison Giving back to our community means a lot to me. It is wonderful that our generous community has raised the funds to build a new hospital. Now Bluewater Health Foundation will continue to fundraise to provide our health care professionals with the best equipment necessary to deliver quality care to our community. Being part of Bluewater Health Foundation’s fund- raising efforts and helping them establish ongoing sources of revenue, which will support our hospital, is a rewarding way for me to give back to the community. Gail Mitton Sarnia has been my home for many years. My wife and I raised our family in Sarnia and we greatly benefited from the compassion and expertise provided by Bluewater Health. The Foundation was thus a natural choice for me when deciding to broaden my volunteering activities since it provides on-going fundraising support for Bluewater Health, which is central to the continuing welfare and health of our community. As President, I appeal to all to continue to support our Foundation. Dr. Jack Pasternak President When one reads the history of Sarnia Lambton, you find endless stories of past volunteer efforts that helped build this great area that we enjoy today. During my childhood, I watched as my parents devoted much of their free time to community service. As I now follow their footsteps, it is easy to see that the footsteps become a path, great people join you walking along that path, and together as a volunteer team you can all reach the destination ahead. Jamie Pole Volume 8 Issue 2 • Saturday, September 20, 2008 • Page “Why I volunteer …….” Bluewater Health Board Members Upon my retirement, I wanted to give back to the community. I have been involved in a number of community organizations one of which was the District Health Council in the 90’s. I enjoyed this committee and I felt I would like to be further involved in health care. I was pleased to be appointed to the Board and look forward to helping improve hospital care in this area. Bryan Bouck I love the fact that I am able to contribute my time and help to support our community’s health care needs. There are times in our lives that our hospital becomes a major focal point, especially when we have sick children, aging parents or traumatic health issues. We all depend on our hospital being there, for some it’s each day, for others we are comfortable that it is just waiting in the background. I’m very proud of the contribution I can make by volunteering my time to the Bluewater Health Board. It is very rewarding to work with so many people who are truly interested in providing caring and safe health care in our community hospital. David H Campbell A topquality local hospital is the cornerstone of the local health care system and a key element of a great community. I volunteer as ViceChair of Bluewater Health because I believe that strong local governance is the best way to influence the decisions, which will make our hospital the best it can be. I believe that I can make a positive difference and make the community where my wife and I are raising our family a better place. Bruce Davies Vice Chair I have always believed that serving the community is part of being a good citizen. Bluewater Health is important to this community and the people of Sarnia-Lambton. It is a major contributor to the quality of life that the people of Sarnia-Lambton enjoy. Serving on the Board of Directors is a very direct way for me to contribute to Bluewater Health and so to my community. Jim Elliott Chair “It may be a cliche, but volunteering at the hospital is really all about mak- ing time to understand and respond to the needs of an important part of our community. It is a pleasure to serve as a member of the Board of Directors - to give back, in some measure, the support Bluewater Health offers to the community and my family. Lorri Kerrigan Volunteering at Bluewater Heath is not as m u c h about giving back to the community as it is participating and enhancing the community Your Opinion Matters to Bluewater Health This is an exciting time in our organization’s history. Together, we are turning a new page and creating a dynamic future. While we revitalize Bluewater Health from the inside, our focus continues to be on providing quality patient care to the community we serve. Part of this important work is the development of a new strategic plan. The strategic planning process is an important exercise that becomes the roadmap for our future – think of it as an analysis of where we’ve come from, and the process to decide where we want to go and how to get there. This work will guide operational planning and decision-making for the next three to five years. While consultants are assisting us in this process, much of the work is being done internally, which is critical to our plan’s success. The four-phased approach has involved extensive stakeholder and community consultation – including participation from the Board of Direc- tors, staff, doctors and our community partners. The feedback we received from our community and staff has been refreshing and insightful – your opinion matters and we thank you for sharing it with us. Your willingness to be involved makes a difference in moving our organization forward to a brighter future! Stay tuned for more information as we set the direction for Bluewater Health, together. which I live in. Being a board member allows me to be involved in issues I care passionately about and donate my professional skills to an essential service. The heath care system impacts everyone at some point in their life and to serve on a hospital board is a contribution to something meaningful and worthwhile. Don McGugan After retiring from education I wanted to continue to do something stimulating and worthwhile. As a member of the Board of Bluewater Health I have an opportunity to contribute to my community, to feel a sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction and to put my talents and experience to work for a good cause. Exceptional health care is a very high priority for residents of Lambton County and it is rewarding to be part of a dedicated and robust team. Bob McKinley I value the opportunity to join the many talented volunteers at Bluewater Health to assist in the continuing development of this excellent hospital. I believe that a well-functioning, vibrant hospital system is essential for all individuals and families in our community. As a new hospital Board member, I look forward to dealing with the many interesting challenges and complex issues before us, as we work together to ensure that all residents of SarniaLambton receive the best possible health care. Richard Newton-Smith T h e p a s t number of years has been a significant time of transition in health care. Locally, those changes are compounded by the need for upgraded facilities in our area. I have volunteered to better understand the issues and to be able to provide my perspective within the community. Bluewater Health provides a vital service to the community and I wanted to be part of ensuring that service stays close to home. Kathryn Poole Volunteering contributes to a strong a n d healthy community. Having been raised in Sarnia I have benefited from the countless hours provided by coaches, volunteers, and certainly the services provided by our vitally important community hospital. Now that my wife and I are raising a family of our own, and I am working as a professional in Sarnia-Lambton, it is my turn to give back. I am honoured to serve on the Bluewater Health Board. Brent Steeves Treasurer I understand that strong health care is vital to the health of a community. Whether to care for an ill child, parent, loved one or ourselves, we all inevitably place our trust at one time or another in the hands of our health care system and its professionals. This rings true regardless of socio-economic background, and for that reason our health care system is revered and must be preserved. Like many other things in life however, trust must be earned as we generally only place it in those who hold an unwavering commitment to their purpose. The opportunity to work with professionals committed to the continuation and preservation of quality health care in Lambton County – and the opportunity to strike new friendships - is the reason I cherish my role with Bluewater Health. To mark the tenth anniversary of her store, Terri has set a goal to raise $15,000 in 2008 to help fund the purchase of digital equipment for the Mammography Suite. Terri’s motivation comes from losing friends to breast cancer. Seeing the courage that they and their children had has inspired Terri to help. “No woman no matter how old or how young should know the pain of losing their mom to breast cancer. That’s my reason for getting involved,” says Terri. Thus, Feather Your Nest has partnered with talented Canadian jewellery designer, Anne Sportun from Experimental Jewellery Works, Toronto, to raise $15,000 by year-end to benefit the Pamela Kohlmeier Mammography Suite at Bluewater Health. The first fundraising event in this goal is a raffle for a beautiful diamond ring. The Anne Sportun diamond pebble ring resembles the timeworn shape of a river stone. The 18kbrushed gold band features a gold disc, delicately paved with 33 x 0.01ct diamonds. The disc molds to the hand in the most intimate way.” The fire and sparkle of this piece is truly dazzling”, says Terri.” the design is ageless. Any woman would enjoy wearing this ring.” The ring has a retail value of $2,250. Raffle tickets are $20.00 each and available at: Feather Your Nest,138 Front St N, Coffee Lodge, 400 Exmouth St, and Bluewater Health Foundation Office(ground floor).
