St Peter’s School, one of New Zealand’s leading co-educational schools, is situated on 100 acres of park like grounds just outside the town of Cambridge (15 kilometres from Hamilton City) in the heart of the Waikato province. The facilities include a gymnasium with a large weights and cardio room, squash courts, tennis courts, golf driving range and a heated indoor swimming pool for recovery purposes. Players will also be exposed to training principles and techniques of high performance athletes from other sports. The school is situated next to the Avantidrome – home of New Zealand Cycling and Triathlon, which will host part of the outdoor adventure component to the programme. St Peter’s School will be responsible for the pastoral care of each individual and they will live on campus or at a nearby school homestay for the duration of the programme. 4 Player Development The three specific aspects of player development facilitated are rugby development, strength and conditioning, and personal development. The Waikato Rugby Union is regarded nationally as a leader in player development and bases the holistic programme around the six pillars of player development: Technical Tactical Physical Mental Nutrition Leadership When entering the programme, each player is individually assessed across the six pillars of player development. This initiates the direction of the four week schedule for each person with their own Individual Performance Plan created to guide them to their full potential. 5 Player Development Players are physically tested, programmed and monitored by WRU high performance staff through the duration of their training phase. Gym sessions will be individually programmed to the training age, priorities and needs of each player. This ensures that the athlete trains to their relative ability and can be progressed in a safe training environment. As part of their tactical development, players will utilise Sportscode video analysis to review their own performance while receiving feedback from a WRU position specific coach. Technical development of the player will be initiated by a skill assessment on entry into the programme. This will assist in the prioritising and planning of the skill development plan for the individual. Skill development through the duration of the programme will focus on the generic core skills, unit skills and position specific skills of the player. 6 Programme Timetable WRU INTERNATIONAL RUGBY PROGRAMME | WEEK 1 | 28 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2014 Week 1 Mon 28 July 2014 Tue 29 July 2014 Wed 30 July 2014 Thur 31 July 2014 Fri 1 August 2014 8.00am Induction Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble 9.00am Physical Assessment 1 Training Principles Individual Performance Plans 1 Gym 2 Gym 3 10.15am Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 10.45am Physical Assessment 2 Gym 1 Core Skills 1 Unit Skills 1 12.00pm Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch 12.45pm Physical Assessment 3 Nutrition 1 2.00pm Core Skill Assessment Speed 1 3.30pm Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 4.00pm Team Training 1 Positions Specific 1 Team Training 2 6.00pm Recovery Session 1 Recovery Session 2 Recovery Session 3 Sat 2 August 2014 Sun 3 August 2014 Recovery Session 4 Game Day 1 vs Fishing Charter Coromandel Peninsula Waikato Invitational XV White Water Rafting Mental Skills 1 Agility 1 Rotorua Tour of Waikato Stadium and Chiefs Super Rugby training facility Individual Player Feedback 1 Potential Super Rugby Final at Waikato Stadium WRU INTERNATIONAL RUGBY PROGRAMME | WEEK 2 | 4 AUGUST - 10 AUGUST 2014 Week 2 Mon 4 August 2014 Tue 5 August 2014 Wed 6 August 2014 Thur 7 August 2014 Fri 8 August 2014 8.00am Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble 9.00am Gym 4 Gym 5 Individual Performance Plans 2 Gym 6 Gym 7 10.15am Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 10.45am Core Skills 2 Unit Skills 2 Core Skills 3 Unit Skills 3 12.00pm Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch 12.45pm Nutrition 2 Mental Skills 2 Mountain Biking Rotorua Tactical 1 Golf Challenge Speed 2 Agility 2 3.30pm Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 4.00pm Team Training 3 - Review Positions Specific 2 Team Training 4 6.00pm Recovery Session 5 Recovery Session 6 Recovery Session 7 Tour of the Avantidrome Home of New Zealand Cycling Individual Player Feedback 2 Sun 10 August 2014 Recovery Session 8 Game Day 2 vs 2.00pm 7 Sat 9 August 2014 Waikato Invitational XV Bungy Jump Huka Falls Jet Boat Tour Taupo Programme Timetable WRU INTERNATIONAL RUGBY PROGRAMME | WEEK 3 | 11 AUGUST - 17 AUGUST 2014 Week 3 Mon 11 August 2014 Tue 12 August 2014 Wed 13 August 2014 Thur 14 August 2014 Fri 15 August 2014 8.00am Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble 9.00am Laws of the Game Gym 9 Individual Performance Plans 3 Gym 10 Gym 11 10.15am Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 10.45am Gym 8 Unit Skills 4 Core Skills 5 Unit Skills 5 12.00pm Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch 12.45pm Core Skills 4 Mental Skills 3 Sat 16 August 2014 Sun 17 August 2014 Game Day 3 vs 2.00pm Nutrition 3 Speed 3 3.30pm Recovery Snack 4.00pm 6.00pm Pig Hunting Trip Coromandel Peninsula Waikato Invitational XV Snowboarding Ski Trip Tactical 2 Mount Ruapehu Agility 3 Black Water Rafting Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Waitomo Caves Team Training 5 - Review Positions Specific 3 Team Training 6 Recovery Session 9 Recovery Session 10 Recovery Session 11 Recovery Session 12 Individual Player Feedback 2 WRU INTERNATIONAL RUGBY PROGRAMME | WEEK 4 | 18 AUGUST - 24 AUGUST 2014 Week 4 Mon 18 August 2014 Tue 19 August 2014 Wed 20 August 2014 Thur 21 August 2014 Fri 22 August 2014 8.00am Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Players Assemble Recovery Session 16 9.00am Gym 12 Gym 13 Individual Performance Plans 4 Gym 14 Gym 15 Team Review 10.15am Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack 10.45am Core Skills 6 Unit Skills 6 Core Skills 7 Unit Skills 7 12.00pm Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch 12.45pm Nutrition 4 Mental Skills 4 2.00pm Squash/Tennis Challenge Speed 4 3.30pm Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Recovery Snack Gondola and Luge Ride Mitai Maori Village Cultural Visit 4.00pm Team Training 7 - Review Positions Specific 4 Team Training 8 Rotorua 6.00pm Recovery Session 13 Recovery Session 14 Recovery Session 15 Surfing Trip Raglan Sat 23 August 2014 Game Day 4 vs Tactical 3 Agility 4 Sun 24 August 2014 Waikato Invitational XV Individual Player Reviews Farewell Dinner 8 Player Development - Core Skills Core Skills are regarded as the fundamental generic skills required by every player in every position.
