The following pages show the work of a group of young students from different
countries in Europe. These countries are: Turkey, Finland, Germany, France and
Spain. The project is called HEALTHY LIVING, and in every country the students
are going to deal with a different aspect of health. In Turkey, some weeks ago
the students worked on the topic: water in health.
This booklet is divided into six parts:
 quotations from every country expressing what water means to them
 presentations about the visits to thermal sites they did in their
homecountries
 the water properties
 water as a therapy
 a humourous presentation on what is water
 some impressions of our meeting in Turkey
What is water to you ?

Before starting to work with it, we collected the quotations on water in each
country. Then we put them in common in Turkey. After it, we chose the best
ones, 2 sentences per country. It is funny to see that there are different
opinions between the people.
For spanish, the water is “life”. For germans, the water “reminds us of
sports”. Turkish wanted to talk about the “medical power of water”.
Finish talked about the “age of the water”. And for French, water has a
“great strength”.
We think that water is essential for us and we couldn’t live without it because
it’s our life’s base. Mostly, all the countries vinculates water to health.
However, some countries vinculate water to another kind of things and
meanings, for example: “water is sport for me”. That means that we don’t only
use it for vital activities such as relaxing ourselves, practising sports…
İn short, water always improves the human organism, so this means that water
and health are linked, becoming one of the most important things of the world.
To sum up, water is the most important thing of our lives…so drink and enjoy it.

Before travelling to Turkey, each group visited a place in their home country
where they dealt with water and health. On the following pages you will find
some pictures and a summary of what each visit consisted of. Finally, they
worked on a Europe map where they placed each of the sites.
Turkey, Pamukkale_____________________________________________________
Karahayıt district is a town with a population of 2,400 people. It is located near Pamukkale,
and 20km in the north of Denizli. Pamukkale, the ancient city of Hierapolis, and the thermal
spas were taken under protection by UNESCO.
The spring waters, which are the important resources of Turkey, in Karahayıt and Pamukkale,
have been formed as a result of active geologic movements in Aegean Region. The climate
conditions of Aegean, Central Anatolia and Mediterranean are seen clearly in Karahayıt
town. Summer season is sunny and arid, and winter season is warm and rainy. The avarage
temperature is 15⁰C during winters.
• Water in Karahayıt contains iron ion and this causes it to be red.
• It’s 60C.
• It covers 500 m² areas.
• It is such a fantastic natural beauty that Karahayıt attracts tourists.
Pamukkale hot springs area is a Special Environmental Protected Area.
Karahayıt has a reputation all around Turkey because it has red water which is good for your
health. For example, when you have a bath in it, it is good for:
 Insomnia
 Rehabilition of stress
 Skin and skin diseases
 Revival of hair, nails and skin cells
 Circulatory system diseases
If you drink it, it is good for:
 The stomach and the esophagus disorders
 The osteoclasis
 Increase calcium
If you have a mud bath, it is good for:
 Smoother skin
 Destroying acnes
 Removing creases
France, Thalassotherapy____________________________________
The city of Royan is localated near the sea so the sea water is used in a special center of
thalasso therapy. In this place there are different types of treatment for the body.
Since a long time ago, people have used the propriety of sea water. For exemple, near Royan
there is an antic roman city where we can see baths of sea water and mud. In 1820, in
France we noticed again the nice proprieties of sea water and water baths were open.
Germany, The Sights of Bad Nauheim__________________________________
Bad Nauheim is a town in the center of Germany in the county of Hesse. It is located close to
Frankfurt. You can find a lot of thermal springs there.
It is a spa resort since 1835.
The water is salty and carbonated. It contains Carbon dioxide and also other minerals. (eg.
Iron). The water is 30- 33° C warm.
The water is used for medical treatment: drinking,
bathing and inhaling therapies. The big fountain of
the Sprudelhof: it looks rusted orange.
The Drinking cure complex with its three different foutains; it was built in the Modern Style.
The springs contain essential minerals and trace elements (like iron, iodine, zinc …) in a
composition that is especially beneficial to the organism
The Inhalatorium is a building with branches of
Blackthorne
The salty water runs 10m down over bundles of
blackthorn
Visitors experience a fresh sea breeze
This process is very healthy
Spain, Caldes de Montbui__________________________________________
Caldes de Montbui is a little town in Catalonia, Spain. It’s located in Vallès Oriental in
Barcelona and there are living 16,000 people there. The name “Caldes” has to do with
“warm” and “hot” and refers to the warm waters which the natural resources produce.
The most important monument is the fountain called “Font del Lleó” from 1581, where we
can find water over 70ºC, the hottest natural water in Spain and the third in Europe.
The first men living there were in 3,500 a.C. and they were farmers. The Roman conquerors
found thermal resorts. They made popular “Caldes” and it was visited by a lot of foreigners,
but then, in the Middle Age city was an important commercial center. Between the
thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Caldes began to be called "Montbui“ for its proximity to
the barons of Montbui.
In ancient Rome, Thermae and balnea were facilities for bathing. Thermae usually refers to
the large imperial bath complexes, while balneae were smaller-scale facilities, public or
private, that existed in great numbers throughout Rome. Also considered to be meeting
places and people who could not afford to have one in their home went there, as
commoners or slaves. Sometimes the emperors or the patricians granted free baths for the
rest classification of the population.
So the thermal water is a remedy that has been used for ages. The benefits of thermal water
are:







Natural remedy for headache
Healthier skin
Improves our exercise
Reduces the risk of cancer
Relieves tiredness
Better mood
Purifies your body
Nowadays, there are medical thermal centers all over the world.
Caldes de Montbui has got an important museum too. Its museum Montbuí was firstly a
hospital which was built in the XIV century. Then, in 1403, it was joined to the chapel of
Santa Susanna. Nowadays, it’s a museum of the uses given to the thermal waters along the
history. There, we can find an explanation of the different applications of thermal water
along the centuries. Also, some sculptures of artists such as Pablo Picasso can be seen there.

Water is one of the essential elements for our
health because two thirds of Earth’s surface is
covered by water and the human body
consists 70 percent of it. As we can see in
nature, for example, in rivers or oceans when they transport minerals and nutrients, water
does the same work fulfilling the most important function in our body keeping us alive.
Like rivers take waste to the sea, our blood is also carrying away waste materials.
Water has always been an important part of the human history. At first, we used water just
to drink. Then we learned to control it and later we discovered its medical purposes. For
example, bathing to relax, drinking to cure illnesses, make our body stronger or just
improving our body getting it fitter.
Technology helps us a lot with the treatments of water but we must take care of it because
technology can also pollute it. We can use water for ourselves but it can damage the
environment. To sum up water is involved in all bodily functions and it is necessary for life on
Earth so if we pollute the water we harm ourselves.

Thalassotherapy
We use Thalassotherapy to relax and to be less tired. We use alguae and mud just
for well-being and cosmetic to relax.
Balneotherapy
Balneo therapy is used for example against arthristis
or fibromyalgia (chronic pain). To treat ıt we use spa
treatment, drinking water, natural vapor baths and
various kinds of muds and sands.
Swimming
We use swimming for mind therapy and
rehabilitation of body. Swimming developes the
muscles and allow you to get away. A good
example is Philippe Croizon because he lost
his arm and his leggs but wıth swimming he
had a rehabilitation and a new goal: he
crossed the Manche.
Water Birth
Water birth offers perineal support for a birthing mother, which decreases the risk of
tearing and reduces the use of episiotomy.
A three-day old fetus is 97 percent water, and at eight months the fetus is 81 percent
water. By the time, a human has grown to adulthood, the adult body is still 50 to 70
percent water, depending on the amount
of fatty tissue.
Human beings’ natural alliance with water
is best witnessed in human babies who
can swim naturally and easily long before
they learn to sit up or crawl. During their
first year of life, babies will calmly and
happily paddle underwater, gazing around
with eyes wide open.
Asthma (water therapy)
Asthma, which affects 14 million children and kills several thousand of them every
year, is a complication of dehydration in the body.
It is caused by the drought management programs of the body. In asthma free
passage of air is obstructed so that water does not leave the body in the form of
vapor - the winter steam. Increased water intake will prevent asthma attacks.
Asthmatics need also to take more salt to break
the mucus plugs in the lungs that obstruct the free
flow of air in and out of the air sacs.
Not recognizing asthma as the indicator of
dehydration in the body of a growing child not
only will sentence many thousands of children to
die every year, but will permit irreversible genetic
damage to establish in the remaining 14 million
asthmatic children.
Thermal bath
The Romans built several of these thermal baths, some
of which are still functioning today. The baths source
their water from natural thermal and mineral water deep
in the ground. People had great faith in the power of
bathing in mineral water to cure arthritis, rheumatism
and skin complaints, and to improve conditions as diverse as gout, impotence,
obesity, haemorrhoids, liver disorders and eye problems. Drinking mineral water was
usually considered to improve digestive disorders, but was sometimes recommended
for insomnia, goitre and even syphilis.
Sound of WaterfallSome
psychologist use sound
of nature for relaxing their patients. Especially they use
water sounds to relax tneir patients bodies and minds.

Kneipping: Kneipping is a therapy which was
named by a priest Sebastian Kneipp. He didn’t invent
Kneipping but made it popular. İt includes a bath in
cold and warm water, but you also have to eat healthy
and relax. This is very good for your blood circulation,
the metabolism, digestion and more.

nozzles, which changes temperature from warm to cold. This
massage aids circulation and helps relieve the painof arthritis and
rheumatism.

Moving on, we can see a piece of comic where three little monkeys disscus
about water, its qualities and the future of it. With it, they want to express in
an original way what they think about water.
Monkey -1: Hi, how are you?
Monkey -2: Fine! As you can see I’m having a shower, and you?
Monkey -1: Fine too, I’m going to drink some water. What about you?
Monkey -3: I’m drinking water too, I’m thirsty.
Monkey -1: Finally, we have water after a dry season!
Monkey -2: Yes, we’re lucky!
Monkey -3: We have to take profit of this water, we don’t know how long the
water will last.
Monkey -2: We have to keep this water for dry season and then share it, that
way we will always have water.
Monkey -1: I want to take profit of all this water now by myself, I want to use
it now.
Monkey -3: I agree with monkey 2, you don’t have to be so selfish, you have to
think about others who haven’t got anything to drink.
Monkey -1: We hardly ever have this opportunity, we have to take profit of it
now.
Monkey -3: If you drink and use all water now, you’ll regret it when we don’t have
water. That’s the reason why we have to keep some.
Monkey -2: That’s true, we have to keep some water for the future. We don’t
know if we’ll have some.
Monkey -1: I don’t mind about the future, I want to live in the present.
Monkey -3: You have to think about your descendants, what will they do if we use
all the water and don’t keep some?
We have to be thankful because we are lucky of enjoying water every day, we
don’t know how lucky we are because we have water in our daily life, we have
to be responsible with water because we want that next generation enjoy of
this precious good. We think everybody should have the same amount of
water, because maybe we don’t know if it could be a serious problem in a not
very far future. As we know not everybody is able to enjoy water, we ought to
think of people and begin to forget the money, because it’s not the most
important thing in the world.

Summary of The Sightseeing
At first we were going to the Hierapolis with the bus. The way this place took half an hour. It’s an
ancient place with old broken houses and many pillars. We took many photos. After that we went to
Pamukkale. Pamukkale is so special, because the water is very calciferous and the ground by the
springs is white from it. Many people were swimming in the water but we didn’t. At last, we were
going to a hotel. There, after having lunch we swam and relaxed. That was our day.
