Celebrating 23 Years of Young Design Talent 2016 Student Design Competition Winners Sponsored by Honoring Design in the Housewares Industry First Place ONLY Paint Brush $3,000 The ONLY Paint Brush is simple to clean and easy to store. Its ergonomic grip is comfortable in multiple orientations. ONLY’s bristles are cast directly into a silicone band, which fans open when the user squeezes the head, allowing water into formerly hard-to-reach areas. A built-in cap protects the brush between painting projects. Judges’ comments: n Ingenious solutions for common problems n Elegant simplicity in concept and presentation n Great visual storytelling with a logical narrative Christopher Crowley Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, senior Celebrating 23 Years of Young Design Talent In 1990 the NHMA Board of Directors established one $2,000 scholarship for a talented industrial design student and to encourage interest in the housewares industry. This scholarship expanded its scope in 1993 to become a national competition, endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), and awarded $10,000 to several winners. IHA later expanded the grants to give cash awards to the universities attended by the six top winners and to recognize students whose projects merited an Honorable Mention. Now in its 23rd year, IHA’s program is hailed as a model for other student competitions and is recognized by the design profession for its contribution to education. Nearly 5,000 college students have entered and 150 winners have launched their careers at the International Home + Housewares Show. More than 200 industry professionals have served as judges. Past winners have become entrepreneurs, educators and design managers for consumer products companies or retailers. IHA is proud of this program’s impact on the lives of young designers and its influence in building design’s importance in the housewares market. 2 2016 Student Design Competition Second Place Nomad Furniture System $2,000 Designed for people ages 18-45 who move often, the Nomad modular furniture system consists of forms that create a storage box, a desk with stool or a shelving unit. Designed to address mobility, affordability, functionality, aesthetics and durability, Nomad is an efficient alternative to popular furniture and storage products. The storage box fits into a standard sedan trunk. Judges’ comments: n Novel solution for new market opportunity Gary Sung Purdue University, senior n Astute observations about pains of moving n Excellent process description, convincing story Second Place Swing House Cleaning Solution $2,000 Swing replaces mops, brooms and vacuums for easier cleaning. Composed of a pleated microfiber cloth stretched between two poles, the lightweight Swing is controlled with two hands as a user dusts around furniture or vertically on stairs. Swing’s playful form makes cleaning more enjoyable and prevents bending or risking lower back injury. It stands in an attractive storage container. Judges’ comments: n Refreshing new concept for a traditional product n Research considers safety, function, aesthetics and storage Yiyang Zhang Arizona State University, graduate n Fine sketching, clear design process, functional model testing 2016 Student Design Competition 3 Third Place Lean-It Ladder $1,000 The Lean-It Ladder helps people to safely reach high areas in a kitchen. By using the kitchen counter as support instead of solely relying on the ladder’s back legs, Lean-It reduces the angle and distance of reach. Slim and compact, the ladder stores conveniently. Made with few parts and of recyclable materials, the ladder considers lifecycle design. Judges’ comments: n Insightful user and market research revealed product need n Excellent human factors study and prototypes for user testing Jean Paul Pompeo The Ohio State University, junior n Strong visuals explain a compelling story Third Place Trimm Coffee Table and Lounge Chairs Trimm is a sleek coffee table that also elegantly stores two folding chairs, providing an unobtrusive solution for additional, comfortable guest seating.
