2014 Annual Report 2014 annual report Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. Building a Senior Community ! was a year of tremendous accomplishment by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers guided by an active and engaged Board of Directors supported by a generous community. Board of Directors Officers Peter J. Campito President Dr. Russell Ward Vice President William M. Hoblock Secretary Cynthia A. Pettit Treasurer 2014 saw the achievement of our annual goals and plans to prepare the organization for the future. All of our programs had strong growth to ensure we can continue to meet our mission. We were also invited to expand programs into some of our neighboring communities to help them serve their seniors. We are proud to be able to serve Colonie and help our neighbors build a senior community. One of the most important ways to grow an organization and stay sound, is to build financial support through events, fundraising, and planned giving. Thank you to all of our supporters, sponsors, friends, volunteers and employees for helping us help seniors. Sincerely, Susan Larman Assistant Treasurer Directors Carm Basile Dr. John D. Tra n s p o r t a t i o n S e r v i ce Transportation services provided by Colonie Senior Service Centers have enabled elderly and disabled residents of Colonie to get to medical appointments, the pharmacy, social activities and other errands affordably and safely. With our fleet of nine vehicles, 10 dedicated drivers, and 14 enthusiastic volunteer drivers and companions, we help seniors remain independent and safe at home. “Thanks to this service, I am able to get about town - thank you” –L. C. In 2014 our transportation services delivered over 20,000 rides, a 6.5% increase over 2013. Our goal is always to improve our efficiency by reducing miles traveled through better routing and grouping of rides, while continuing to provide top notch customer service. Similar efficiencies were applied to the Good Turns Senior Escort Wagon Service, which assists frail and disabled elderly with a fully escorted transportation service operated by volunteer drivers and companions. Our Driver Fitness Center at the Beltrone Living Center works closely with other senior service providers and the law enforcement community to offer resources and alternatives to assist older drivers to continue driving safely, longer. In 2014, the resources of the Driver Fitness Center were accessed by 1,437 older adults and the Defensive Driving program endorsed by the National Traffic Safety Institute grew substantially to the point where classes are offered monthly. Senior Dining Programs “Just a brief note to tell you how much I enjoy the lunches at town hall. I have met some very nice people and we all enjoy the entertainment.” - D.S. In 2014, Colonie Senior Service Centers served 27,395 meals to seniors in our community at eight locations, including Bright Horizons Adult Day Services. For many seniors, enjoying a warm meal with friends is one way to stay connected to the community. The Senior Dining Program brings friends together at eight neighborhood meal sites where they can enjoy entertainment, socialize and catch up on the news. Bright Horizons Colonie (1985) Colonie Community Center (1990) Bishop Broderick Apartments (1991) The Beltrone Living Center (1999) Carondelet Commons (2003) Guilderland Town Hall (2003) Sheehy Manor (2003) Bright Horizons Guilderland (2014) 4 Solutions for Seniors & their Families Bright Horizons Adult Day Services Bright Horizons Colonie Bright Horizons Clifton Park Bright Horizons Guilderland Bright Horizons at Latham Bright Horizons has served families in the Capital Region for more than 30 years. The program started with a single member. At present, there are four sites providing respite to over 100 families each month. These programs provide a safe place for loved ones who are in need of a supportive environment during the day and respite for their caregivers. Bright Horizons partners with families to offer a program that includes companionship, hot meals, exercise, recreation, and socialization. “All of the people at Bright Horizons gave my dad hours of peace and rest, and gave my mom a safe place where she felt wanted and needed.” - R. C. In 2014, Bright Horizons expanded its program to four locations: Colonie, Latham, Guilderland, and Clifton Park. More than 12,500 days of respite were provided to caregivers throughout the Capital Region. The Bright Horizons Caregiver Resource Center continues to offer valuable information and materials for families. The Virtual Caregiving webcams and Skype offer caregivers a unique opportunity to keep in touch with loved ones while they are enjoying Bright Horizons. Umbrella of Colonie Umbrella of Colonie is a home maintenance program designed to give senior homeowners the opportunity to continue to live safely and independently in their homes. Umbrella connects seniors with retired handymen to help with day-to-day projects around the home. Umbrella handymen work to prevent small household repairs from becoming major problems. Safety is a main focus of the program. Umbrella membership includes a 17-point NYS Home Safety Inspection, and the handymen are alert to potential fire and safety hazards in homes, as well. Now in its seventh year, Umbrella continues to expand its services to cover the growing needs of today’s senior citizens. In 2014, Umbrella of Colonie membership grew by 13%. We completed 1,800 jobs for 449 members. In addition, we continue our bi-monthly Umbrella luncheons which keep members and handymen informed and connected. The luncheon also features guest speakers to help enhance and improve their lifestyle. 5 “Thanks to this program, I now have peace of mind that if anything goes wrong or breaks down in my house, I have the means to set it right at a reasonable cost” – M. M. 2014 annual report Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. Community Support ~ 2014 In 2014, with the support of individuals, foundations and the business community, CSSC raised more than $327,743, approximately 18 % of our program and services budget. Here are just a few of the ways your support of our fundraising activities has helped to keep seniors active and living in the community. The Warmth of Wine (WOW) raised more than $57,000; funds raised go directly to help seniors pay their winter heating bills . . . Warmth of Wine More than 170 individuals and families were able to pay their high winter heating bills through grants in aid from the proceeds of the 10th Annual Warmth of Wine. The Fashion Show, Calendar Raffles, and Transportation mailings raised more than $21,470 to support Transportation Services . . . A client of our Transportation services receives additional support through CSSC’s Escort Service, as she requires additional assistance in getting in and out of vehicles, a companion to sit with her while at doctors’ appointments and help with grocery shopping by the driver and/or volunteer of our Escort Service. The Golf Tournament and the Annual Founders Awards Dinner raised more than $88,000. Our Annual Fund Appeals, Government and Community Foundation grants, Corporate Support, and Tribute Program make up the rest of the funds raised and benefit all of our programs and services . . . Mother’s Day Fashion Show & Luncheon To reach a different population of caregivers and deliver the program to areas in need, Bright Horizons Adult Day Services relocated a site to the Town of Guilderland and launched a new site in the Town of Clifton Park. While away from home, the pipes broke in an Umbrella member’s home. A neighbor reported the problem to the Umbrella Program Director who quickly summoned the plumber to shut off the water, saving the member’s home from severe water damage and additional repairs. Salvatore R. Beltrone Annual Golf Classic Without the support of individuals, businesses and foundations, we would not be able to accomplish all that we do. Thank you for helping us to meet our Mission and serve seniors throughout the Capital Region. In this report we hone and recognize our many supporters, who through their continued generous support, partner with CSSC in our efforts to improve and enhance the lives of the seniors and families we serve. Senior Housing Options Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. currently owns and operates two residential facilities for seniors of differing lifestyles and economic circumstances. Sheehy Manor opened its doors in 1998 to seniors with limited income. Many original residents still live there today, a testament to the comfort and character of the facility. Sheehy Manor has become one of the areas premier residences for independent seniors, maintaining a waiting list for interested future residents. The residents continue to enjoy weekly luncheons and monthly special dinners as well as seasonal parties, Bingo, cards, and interesting informational speakers. In 2014, Sheehy Manor upgraded the lobby to include new hardwood floors. Residents now enjoy free WiFi service in the lobby and community rooms and two new computers in the Computer Lab. Sheehy Manor has remained a true community where everyone joins in to maintain a warm neighborhood atmosphere. Sheehy Manor The Beltrone Living Center, a middle income 55+ housing community, opened its doors in 1999 with 249 apartment homes for independent seniors. The Beltrone Living Center again maintained 100% occupancy in 2014. The Beltrone Living Center has become a truly unique community with numerous amenities. Residents don’t even have to leave the comfort of the building to get to the Lakeview Restaurant, the Country Cafe, the Salon at Beltrone, library, billiards room or Bright Horizons Adult Day Services. Residents also enjoy easy The Beltrone Living Center access to CSSC’s many programs and services. In addition, the Town’s Senior Resources Department and the administrative offices of CSSC are located in The Beltrone Living Center. This brings together many senior services, all accessible in one place. Residents also enjoy free membership to the Rudy A. Ciccotti Family Recreation Center just down the road and is located adjacent to The Crossings of Colonie. Lakeview Catering, in the Beltrone Living Center, is a unique enterprise in the Capital Region. It is a first-class catering and banquet facility owned by a non-profit corporation, Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc., managed by Mazzone Hospitality. Many senior groups, as well as corporate and non-profit friends, use Lakeview regularly, helping to support us financially. All net proceeds from the operation are reinvested in essential programs and services for seniors in Colonie and the Capital Region. With funding levels flat or declining even as demand increases, this effort to become more self-sufficient is important to the survival of CSSC. 14 Solutions for Seniors & their Families H e a l t h & We l l n e s s P r o g r a m s Colonie Senior Service Centers is fortunate to have many strong community relationships that help us bring our programs to more seniors in more locations. Bocce leagues play at the Italian American Center in Troy, the Roessleville Presbyterian Church hosts two Healthy Bones classes, and area arts and cultural venues host monthly Around Town trips to connect seniors with the cultural amenities of our region. All of the Health and Wellness programs promote a healthy lifestyle to help seniors stay healthy, active and independent. In 2012 we launched a new initiative with the CDPHP Senior Fit program, connecting eligible seniors with free CSSC Health and Wellness Classes and free membership at the Ciccotti Center. By the end of 2014 more than 1,512 seniors took advantage of this program engaging in 2,600 fitness sessions each month. For all of our Health and Wellness programs, we recruit community volunteers to maximize staff effectiveness. We continue to develop community partnerships to enable us to provide more programs in underserved neighborhoods. “I enjoy walking, exercise, and osteo very much. I find all the information very helpful and enjoy meeting with my new friends every week. I feel stronger and have more energy.” - Anonymous Vo l u n t e e r O p p o r t u n i t i e s CSSC is privileged to have over 300 volunteers who give freely of their time and talent to help seniors and their families each year. In 2014, volunteers donated almost 20,000 hours of service in the Senior Dining Program, the Escort Program, Bright Horizons Adult Day Program, Senior Transportation, and the Umbrella Program just to name a few! The volunteers served as senior club representatives, provided assistance with mailing the Senior Connections newsletter and assisted at various fundraising events. Other volunteers were leaders for wellness classes, sang or performed tap and jazz numbers for seniors and other groups in the community. In July 2014 CSSC became the Capital Region’s RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) sponsor. Volunteers 55+ experience “one stop shopping” with the assistance of a volunteer coordinator, to locate the impactful volunteer opportunities. These volunteer opportunities are with community organizations, schools and senior centers throughout Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties. The dedication of our volunteers is extraordinary allowing us to serve as many seniors as we do. Thank you to all of our volunteers! 15 “You don’t do this for the recognition…you do it for the feeling and meeting many wonderful people.” - Al & Evelyn Wolf Volunteers of the Year 2 0 1 4 Vo l u n t e e r s Cathryn Abbott Ethel Abdelnour Nadine Abdelnour Doris Abeles Dorothy Acker Jean Albert Jerry Allen Helga Apkarian* Helen Appel John Archambault Laura Archambault* Gert Atkins Marcia Barnett Carm Basile Edith Beck Dr. John Bennett Dolly Berla Agnes Betz Jean Bigilin Claire Bilodeau Marie Blackwell Bea Bopp Jenny Brannon Mary Brizzell Rhonda Bruno Viola Burnetter Peter Campito George Casab Carolyn Chabot June Champney Betty Lou Chandler Mary Colello Rosemarie Conlon John Connor Frank Crehan Mary Crehan Kay Daddio Millie Dagner Marlene Dana John Deffigos JoAnn Della Rocca Ralph DellaRocca Jeanne Denue-Grady John Diggs Katherine Dimler Margaret Dirolf Mary Ditonno Louis Dobek Sylvia Dobrowski Kathleen Dorn Nancy DuBois Trannie Mae Dubose Sr. Rita Duggin Marie Edwards Dodie Esposito Patricia Fahlander* William Fahy Mary Rose Farina Patricia Farrell Kay Fick Beverly Filkins Kay Fitzgerald Heather Foley Joanne Fortunato Teresa Fox Marion Fulginiti Eva Ganc Stella Gasorowski Ellen Gibson* Ann Gitto-Smith Sherry Gold Kayla Gollmer Morgan Gollmer Tammy Gollmer Jeanne Grady Gwen Graham Donald Gray Dorothy Green Kathleen Gregory Evelyn Hakim Nancy Haley Molly Harder Victoria Harkins James Hasenbein John Henkes Ora Henkes Marilyn Hietala Michael J.
