The Rug Collection Story
“It’s amazing that six years at TRC have passed already, and what started as a small
business has grown rapidly into an international company. A lot has evolved here, but
our true passion remains in creating unique designs, and offering the market place a
variety of rugs that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Our exclusive rugs are all designed in Australia, and hand made by artisans in India. We
regularly visit our production houses, working closely with the experienced crafters
who have been dying yarns and expertly weaving handmade rugs for generations. All our
pieces are of the highest quality, embrace fair trade practices, and are handmade in New
Zealand wool, wool blend and artsilk.
Alongside our own designs, The Rug Collection has also had a lot of fun collaborating
with some of Australia’s most recognised artists & designers. These include JAMIE DURIE,
SHAYNNA BLAZE, NICOLA CERINI, KAS AUSTRALIA, the JULU WAJAAR Indigenous
collection and DESERT DESIGNS by Jimmy Pike.
In addition to this, we also offer a fantastic CUSTOM MADE program whereby you can
create a rug to your required size, colour, shape & texture. Our custom made program
is also available in a great range of flatweaves and a heavy duty commercial quality.

my latest collection of rugs. When you photograph a portrait of someone, it’s nice to
have the background out of focus so your attention zooms into the subject. These
exquisitely colour shaded rugs act as a beautiful backdrop to any room in the same way
depth of field influences our perception. There is no critical point of transition between
one shade of colour to the next and as a result the rugs provide a soft, comforting
anchor to a room, evoking a sense of serenity similar to when viewing a landscape
horizon at dawn or dusk.”

“Whilst walking along the beach, the unique textures and light struck me as perfect
inspiration for my first rug collection. The beach can be soft, harsh and inviting all at the
same time. Like the ever changing moods of the ocean, I wanted the designs and colours
of the rugs to take on different depths and textures from every direction. The rugs not
only look textural, but feel soft underfoot, with carving representing the rippling sands
and coral from the ocean floor. The calming tones of grey and warm neutrals let them
slip seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary homes, adding depth, texture
and warmth to an interior.”

Extending her design inspiration even further, celebrated Melbourne Textile Designer
Nicola Cerini has worked with The Rug Collection again to build on her striking range
of stunning rugs. Nicola has captured her signature style across these beautiful rugs,
placing a strong emphasis on fashionable colours, bold designs and voluminous textures.
The theme across each of the designs encapsulates Nicola’s love of nature with names
and influences from her travels through Japan, and her other love – coastal retreats like
Tasmania and her home town of Torquay.
Strongly influenced by her natural surroundings and Australian native flora, Nicola’s
work explores the striking silhouettes and colours she sees in the everyday, celebrated
in her eponymous range of bags and home accessories.

Indigenous Rug Collection
by The Rug Collection
This collection is called “Julu Wajaar” (One Earth in the Gumbaynggir language). The designs encompass features
and stories of indigenous heritage and culture that move from the coast through to the Australian desert. Featuring
three Indigenous artists, each rug is adapted from an original painting or developed in conjunction with the artist.

“I am a descendant of the Gumbaynggir people from Nambucca Heads
in Northern NSW. My paintings are cultural representations of my
symbols and stories; which have been passed down through many
generations of my family.”
“I am a Luritja / Aranda man, a traditional elder of Mutitjulu and born
in Alice Springs. I grew up as stockman and station-hand so I got
to know my country intimately. My art represents a narrative and
spiritual legacy to my children and grandchildren.”

Mary two options. She loved the first option
but thought that the colours were a bit
too bright. She decided to choose slightly
darker colours and include more blue and
green tones.

TEXTURE
Mary wanted to keep the rug 100% wool but
was also interested in creating some texture.
We suggested adding carving to distinguish
the shapes and give the design more definition.
DELIVERY
8-10 weeks later the rug was
ready for delivery directly to
Mary’s door.
The rug looks fantastic with
the modern interior!
