Welcome to football time again on the campus of Memphis
University School. Coach Bobby Alston’s team faces another
array of formidable opponents, opening at home against last year’s TSSAA
Division II-AA state champion, Ensworth. Road trips to South Panola
(Mississippi 6A state champions and ranked #1 in the nation last year in
most polls), Olive Branch, St. Benedict, and Briarcrest punctuate a home
schedule that includes Kingsbury, Central, East, White Station, and CBHS.
The Owls have earned four state football championships in the last
seven seasons, and hope springs in every Owl heart for a strong run at
one more. Every year yields a murderous regular season schedule,
followed by extraordinary playoff challenges versus superb Division II
teams from other parts of the state. Though not everyone will admit it,
everyone understands that TSSAA Division II-AA produces the best
high-school football in Tennessee.
At MUS we want to do whatever we do as well as we can. And we want to
do it against the best competition available. A commitment to excellence
encompasses not only our athletic program but also our academic program
and non-athletic extracurricular activities. We believe that boys need a
wide range of experiences that stimulate the intellect, quicken the spirit,
and build the physical body.
Team sports like football teach lessons about life and about ourselves – the
courage to compete, selfless loyalty to teammates and school, perseverance
in the face of adversity, and teamwork in pursuit of noble goals.
As spectators, we must support our teams in a positive way, extend
hospitality and courtesy to visiting schools and their fans, and exhibit
the same level of sportsmanship and class as our players and coaches.
We must keep the proper perspective: yes, we play to win, but it is,
after all, a game.

BASEBALL
Johnny beard, Head Coach
Having come to MUS in 2004 to serve as an assistant baseball coach and
supervisor of the school’s athletic fields, Coach Beard took over the baseball
program in the 2008 season. During that season, the Diamond Owls finished
14-11 and came within one victory of advancing to the sub-state round. In
the 2009 season the Owls were able to advance to the sub-state round with
the help of just one senior. The 2010 season was the best in school history,
tying one record and setting a new one. The Diamond Owls won the region
for only the second time (the first being in 1992) and advanced further in the
state playoffs than any team had ever done, ending as state runners-up. For
these accomplishments, Coach Beard was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best
of Preps Coach of the Year. This past season, the team repeated their titles as they took first place in the region
and became state runners-up. Beard, who has coached at a variety of levels for more than thirty-seven years, is
widely known in baseball circles. During his career, his teams have won five amateur national championships, and
some of his players have gone on to play professionally for teams such as the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs,
Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Prior to coming to MUS, he worked at and ultimately retired from
Memphis Light, Gas, and Water. In addition to his current baseball
duties, he still supervises the maintenance of the athletic fields.

Jerry peters, Head Coach
Coach Peters came to MUS in the fall of 1960. During his first eighteen years,
he was head track and cross country coach and had three athletes set state
records – Steve Keltner ’65 in the long jump, Gary Garner ’73 in the 880-yard
run, and Tommy Christenbury ’78 in the decathlon. In 1964 he was named
head basketball coach. His teams have won sixteen district and seven regional
championships. In 2007, the Owls not only won the region but also captured
the state title. During his forty-seven years as basketball coach, MUS has won
985 games, which is first among active coaches in the state and second all-time.
In 2005, Coach Peters was inducted into the Rhodes College Athletics Hall of
Fame, and in 2008, he was named to the TSSAA Hall of Fame. As a history
teacher for more than five decades, Peters held the A. Robert Boelte, Jr. Chair of Excellence in Teaching from
2002-2011. During his academic tenure, Peters has received awards for
excellence in teaching and service, including the TAIS Hubert Smothers
baSKetball 2010-11
Award for Distinguished Teaching and, from MUS, the Distinguished
Teacher Award, the John M. Nail Outstanding Teacher Award, and the
Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service.

BowLing
David Jackson
and Michael Schwartz,
Head Coaches
Bowling was added as a sport in the fall
of 2008. From October through January,
six-man teams competed against other teams
from area private schools. Together, coaches
David Jackson and Michael Schwartz formed
a dedicated group of participants who, in only
their second season, qualified for the state
tournament, which was canceled later due to snow conditions. Returning players are eager to improve further
during this fourth season and get a chance at state competition.
Originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, Dr. Jackson learned about bowling while in college at FreedHardeman University and Harding University. He first came to MUS in 1974 and stayed for eight years while
serving as chairman of the Religion Department. He left in 1982 to pastor a church, and for the next twenty-three
years, he led a congregation in Jackson, Mississippi, and one in Knoxville. Upon returning to MUS in 2005, he
once again took over as head of the Religion Department and now adds coaching to his responsibilities.
Dr. Schwartz was introduced to bowling during college at Purdue University when he took a bowling class that
required him to bowl three times
a week at 7:30 a.m. He enjoyed
the class so much that he joined
a league to gain more experience.
Schwartz came to MUS in 2005
from Vanderbilt University, where
he had been doing research in
neurobiology. At MUS, he teaches
biology and Molecular Biology. He
was named the chairman of the
Science Department at the beginning
of the 2008 school year.

Joe tyler, Head Coach
This season will mark Coach Tyler’s twelfth as head coach of the cross-country
team. Prior to MUS, he was assistant cross-country coach at Christian Brothers
High School and Houston High School. Tyler grew up in Kansas City,
Missouri, graduated from Creighton University, and obtained a master’s degree
from the University of Memphis. He came to MUS in
1999 to teach mathematics in the Lower School and
has assisted in coaching basketball and track. He now
serves as the assistant principal in the Lower School
in addition to his teaching and coaching duties. His
first cross-country squad in 2000 contributed to the
excellence of the MUS program as they finished a solid third in the state meet, and in
2005, the squad finished second in the state, its highest finish since 1996. This past year
the team finished sixth at the state meet.

brad Kroeker, Head Coach
Under the direction of Kroeker, fencing started as a club sport at MUS in
2005 but grew in popularity and became the fourteenth varsity sport in 2009.
Kroeker worked two years with M. Bella Walther of the Hungarian national
saber team and two years with Sergey Petrosian of the Russian/Armenia junior foil team. He then coached and taught fencing classes at Rhodes College
from 1999-2004. During this time, his fencers won many awards, including
a bronze medal in saber at the 1999 national championships from a field of
40 divisions, and were ranked among the Top 25 in all three weapons for the
2000-01 season. They also were awarded several division championships: four
in individual épeé, three in
individual saber, three for the épeé team, and two for the saber
team. In total, his teams won thirty-one regional tournaments

Cliff Frisby, Head Coach
Frisby, a 30-year member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA), has been
the director of the United States Junior Golf Tour since 2001. He starts his
third year as head coach of the varsity golf team. He served as an acting coach in
several matches throughout the 2008 season, including the state championships,
when Greg King stepped down as head coach to become director of the
Mirimichi Golf Course in Millington. Frisby has taken over a very successful
MUS program that has claimed four state titles, seven runner-up finishes, and
fourteen overall region titles. This season looks bright for the Owls. The team is
returning junior Zach Olsen, who was the 2008 Tennessee state golf champion as
an eighth-grader, the youngest in state history. Olsen was state runner up in 2010
as a sophomore. Additionally, both the 2008 and 2009 teams placed
first in the region and second in the state. The 2010 team placed first
in the region and fourth in the state. Other returning players are senior

elliott Dent, Head Coach
Lacrosse started as a club sport at MUS in 1990 but grew in popularity and
became the tenth varsity sport in 1995. In 1996, Elliott Dent came fresh from
college-level lacrosse at Hampden-Sydney to teach religion and English and
become head coach of the varsity lacrosse team. Since 1998, when the team
won its first TSLA championship, Dent’s squads have been elite programs in
Tennessee, winning seven titles during his stay. In 2011, the Owls went 14-2
and played dominating lacrosse on their way to become the TSLA champions.
Additionally, Coach Dent was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of Preps
Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. During Dent’s tenure, the
team beat McCallie and MBA for the first time in the school’s history as well as
schools from California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina,
Kentucky, and Virginia. His record at MUS is 174-42. He has coached eighteen All-Americans and five Academic
All-Americans since 1997. He was named the TSLA Coach of the Year in 1999 and was the president of the
TSLA from 1999 to 2004. In 2002, Dent was the coach for the West All-Star Team for the U.S. Lacrosse High
School All-Star Games. Dent enjoys teaching the sport that he loves and watching his young players gain self-confidence. Under his leadership the summer lacrosse camp has become very popular, introducing record numbers
of boys to the game. He feels that the real payoff for becoming a coach is seeing a player become enthusiastic and
learn to appreciate the sport.

Vincent beck, Head Coach
Beck has been the head coach of the MUS soccer team for the past fourteen
seasons. In 1998, Coach Beck led the team to the state quarterfinals and
has reached the state tournament every year since. He has also led some
championship squads, including the 1999 team, which was undefeated in the
region and took home the regional championship. And his 2004 squad reached
high school soccer’s pinnacle by winning the state title, defeating University
School of Nashville, 2-0, in the championship match. Beck says he enjoys
coaching because it is both challenging and different every year. Beck grew
up in Scotland playing soccer, but he says his inspiration came from Mike
Berticelli, former head soccer coach at the University of Notre Dame. Before
coming to MUS, Coach Beck played indoor soccer professionally for twelve years and was a three-time All-Star.
He also was an assistant coach for a professional team for three years and coached high school boys and girls teams
for two years, including the 1991 high school boys team that won the state championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Beck even played two seasons for the Memphis Express, a professional team in Memphis. The Owls earned a state
championship in 2004, for which The Commercial Appeal named Beck the Soccer Coach of the Year. This past
season, the team was second in the region and lost in overtime at the state quarterfinals to MBA, 3-2.

bryan parker, Head Coach
This marks the first year for Parker as head coach of the varsity swimming team.
Parker has ten years of coaching experience, and he is currently an assistant
coach with the Memphis Tiger swim team and head coach for the Memphis
Country Club swim program. In 1999, Coach Laurie Clark resurrected the
swim program at MUS, which had been dormant since the 1930s. Now, in
their thirteenth season, the Aquatic Owls have won the Shelby County Swim
League championship for three years in a row, winning against sixteen public
and private schools. The largest men’s swim team in the conference, the squad
averages more than thirty swimmers per season. Going 164-11 last season, the
team broke seven of the twelve MUS individual records, two of the three MUS
relay records, all under the tutelage of Coach Clark, who was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of Preps Coach
of the Year in 2009 and 2010. Parker takes the helm of a successful swimming program, and MUS swimmers are
looking forward to continued success under their new coach.

bill taylor, Head Coach
With seven state team championships in the last decade, Coach Taylor and the
tennis program continue as one of the dominant sports programs in Tennessee
high school athletics. The 2011 team placed fifth out of sixteen teams chosen
to participate in the DecoTurf National High School Invitational Tournament.
They also earned a regional title, which they have done every year since 1996,
and sophomore Marshall Sharp earned the singles state championship, which
he also won in2010. In his thirty-fifth season with the Owls, Taylor has
coached his teams to twenty-two district championships along with thirtyone regional titles. Overall, his teams have won eleven state titles and been
the runner-up eight more times, and his players have claimed twelve state doubles titles and seven more singles
championships. Additionally, Taylor's squads have won more than seventy-seven invitational, district, regional,
and state tournaments. Taylor has been named Tennis Coach of the Year by The Commercial Appeal for eleven of
the past thirteen years, including 2008 and 2011. In college, Taylor played tennis for Southwestern (now Rhodes
College) while earning his degree. Besides coaching,
he also teaches biology, AP Biology, Genetics, and
directs the MUS in Europe summer programs.

bobby alston, Head Coach
Coach Alston starts his twenty-seventh season as track and field head coach.
The 2011 team went through a rebuilding year and looks poised for a great
2012 season, returning all scoring members. The Owls claimed traditional
state championships in 1994, 1995, 1997, and 2009 and were state runnerup four more times (1991-93, 2007), as well as capturing 20 region titles.
Alston has been recognized several times by the The Commercial Appeal as
Track and Field Coach of the Year. He also serves as head football coach and
athletic director of the school.

Hamilton eggers, Head Coach
Begun as a club sport in 2005 by Patrick McCarroll ’92, the trapshooting team
has grown immensely to become a very popular spring sport. In 2008, the
program became the school’s twelfth varsity sport. Hamilton Eggers ’94
inherited a sound program when he took the reigns from McCarroll in
2009. As a member of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), the Owls
compete against other public and private schools in several regular-season
shoots in preparation for the postseason. The emphases at shoots include
safety and sportsmanship as teams of five athletes shoot at clay targets released
from a central trap house. In 2010, MUS finished 5th in the district with
high expectations to compete for a medal in the regional shoot. MUS placed
a disappointing 12th overall in the region but did well enough to qualify for the state shoot which gave them
valuable experience. The 2011 season was plagued by bad weather, competition cancellations, and practice facility
flooding. Still, at the regional shoot, Jake Woodman broke 87 of 100 targets, taking second place in the varsity
alternate division and qualifying for state. The trapshooting program’s goal parallels the mission of the Tennessee
SCTP: “to teach the importance of safe firearms handling, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork and to
promote healthy competition.”

Steve Hendricks, Head Coach
Hendricks is not new to coaching; he started his career in Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State University. From
there, he coached at Millington High School from 1975 to 1991, establishing a
team record of 168-48-3 during that time. After several years in administration
at the Shelby County school system, he was transferred to Bolton High School.
By the 1998 season, his duties also included coaching the wrestling team, an
assignment that lasted until 2003 and established a team record of 78-22 during
that same period. After retirement from the Shelby County school system, he
began coaching as an assistant at MUS with both the Lower School and Upper
School teams. Hendricks starts his third year at MUS as head coach. The 2011
wrestling season was individually successful for junior Eli Goldstein, who placed fifth at state, and three other
Owls, Townes Buford, Trey O’Bannon, and Avery
Tosi, who made it all the way to state quarterfinal
competition. Additionally, Kyle Naes competed
after football season and won the Freshman City
Championship.

Bobby Alston
Head Coach/Quarterbacks
Hired by Col. Ross Lynn in 1977 to teach physical education and
coach, Bobby Alston joined the varsity football staff in 1980 as defensive
coordinator, switching to offense in 1983 as the Owls moved from the
wishbone to a more wide-open attack. In 1998, Alston followed Jake
Rudolph (1959-97) and Gene Thorn (1957-58) to become only the
third head football coach in the school’s history. During his tenure on
the Owls’ staff, MUS has won 267 games and lost 93, been the state
runner-up twice and won five state championships, including the 2004,
2005, 2008, and 2009 titles. The Commercial Appeal has honored Alston
as Coach of the Year three times (2004, 2005, and 2008) and Sportsman
of the Year in 2009. Additionally, he received the Rex Dockery Award
from the Memphis Chapter of the National Football Foundation and
College Hall of Fame in 2007. Coach Alston is married to Sally, a safety
consultant, and has two adult children, Meredith and Drew ’07, and one
grandchild, Hudson.

Cady offers our athletes more than
36 years of coaching experience. A
1969 MUS alumnus, he continued
to hone his game in college, playing
at Southwestern on the defensive
line. Upon graduation in 1973,
Cady started coaching at Elliston
Academy and has remained in
education ever since. Cady returned
to MUS in 1982 as a teacher,
coach, and administrator until
he was offered the job as head
football coach at a private school
in Charlotte, NC, in 1996. After
three years there, Cady came back
to Memphis and returned to MUS
in 2007.
Chubb has served as leader of the
MUS defense since 2006. After
an illustrious high school football
career, Chubb played for Wittenberg
University, earning first-team AllConference as an offensive lineman
for three years, a Division III AllAmerican honor (1994) and a spot
on the Conference All-Decade team.
Before moving to Memphis, Chubb
taught and coached at his alma
mater and spent one year coaching
offensive linemen at Evansville
University. Rhodes College was the
next stop for Chubb. He spent eight
years as a Lynx, coaching baseball,
softball, track, and football.
After retiring from the Shelby
County School system in 2001,
Ellis joined the MUS football
program to help with the offensive
line. He made the switch to defense
eight seasons ago. A graduate of
Germantown High School and
Memphis State, Ellis returned to
Germantown in 1966 to begin his
coaching career. In 1989, he moved
to Houston High School when he
was offered the position of head
coach and coached the Mustang’s
very first football season. Ellis
returned to Germantown in 1995
as an assistant and remained there
until his retirement.
An MUS staffer since 2005, Jones
coaches outside linebackers called
buzzards. A native of Batesville,
Mississippi, Jones played linebacker
with high school powerhouse South
Panola, before becoming a threeyear letterman at defensive end for
Ole Miss. Jones’ professional career
included stops in the Arena League
cities of Jackson, Mississippi and
St. Louis. In 2004, he moved to
Memphis to begin his second career
as a fitness trainer. Jones spent some
time at 24-Hour Fitness before beginning his own service, Next Level
Personalize Fitness.

Orlando McKay
Eggers is in his fourth year of
rounding out the MUS football staff
as an offensive line coach. A 1994
graduate of MUS, Eggers was a
three-time All-Conference lineman
and senior-season team MVP at
Rhodes College, where he coached
Lynx running backs for two years
after graduation. Upon leaving
Rhodes, Eggers spent six years in the
world of financial management
before returning to education. He
joined the ECS teaching and coaching staff in 2006 and began pursuing his master’s degree at CBU.
After two successful seasons with
the Eagles, Eggers returned to MUS
in 2008 to teach history and coach
football and trapshooting.
In college, Finney played football
at Delta State University, earning
a spot on the Gulf South Conference Team of the Decade (1990),
the Gulf South Conference’s 25th
Anniversary team (1996), and
induction into Delta State’s Sports
Hall of Fame (1999). Finney spent
the next 17 years coaching baseball,
basketball, football, and track at Lee
Academy in Clarksdale, winning the
1995 3A Baseball Championship in
Mississippi and being named Coach
of the Year (baseball) in 1995 and
1996. Before diving into the MUS
offense five years ago, Finney served
as head coach of varsity football at
Lee Academy and Tipton-Rosemark
Academy.
McKay has coached football and
track for MUS since 1996. After high
school in Arizona, McKay went to
the University of Washington, where
he started at wide receiver. During
college, his squads won two PAC-10
Championships (1990 and 1991) and
one was voted National Champion
(1991). McKay earned All-PAC-10
academic honors for three of his four
college years. In track, he was a threetime All-American and, in 1989,
clocked the 32nd fastest time in the
world in the 400 meters (45.81).
McKay continued his football career
as a fifth round draft pick of the
Green Bay Packers in 1992 before
finishing out his playing days with
two seasons in the CFL.
Glenn Rogers

Rogers has been an integral part
of the MUS staff for ten years.
A local son, he graduated from the
University of Memphis. Rogers
spent two seasons in the NFL with
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and
Miami Dolphins before moving on
to seven seasons in the CFL, including five with the 1993 Grey Cup
Champs, the Edmonton Eskimos.
He also played briefly for the
Orlando Thunder, a World Football
League team. Rogers first came to
MUS in 2000 to teach and coach.
After a one-year hiatus to coach the
Montreal Alouettes of the CFL, he
returned to MUS in 2003.
This marks Rutledge’s third year on
the football staff. After graduating
from MUS in 2002, he studied
history and played safety at Millsaps.
His time on the field and in the
library earned him All-Conference
SCAC and All-Academic SCAC
honors. After graduation, Rutledge
helped coach the Millsaps Majors
to two conference championships
and completed his master’s degree
in history at Mississippi College.
In early 2008, he served as a
volunteer track coach at MUS
before taking a position teaching
history and coaching outside
linebackers at Cordova High School.
He returned to MUS in 2009 to
teach history and assist coaching
football and track.
This is Upchurch’s second year
as the team’s athletic trainer. She
earned her BSED in exercise and
sport science at the University
of Memphis, where she also
participated in the Student Athletic
Training program. She earned her
master’s degree in athletic training
at the University of Tennessee
at Chattanooga, where she was
also involved in the care and
rehabilitation of various athletes.
In 2008, Upchurch returned to
Memphis as an athletic trainer
with Memphis City Schools. One
year later she accepted a position
with Campbell Clinic’s Outreach
program, dividing her time as
assistant to Dr. Fredick Azar and the
athletic trainer at MUS.
Ferebee returns to MUS after a
one-year hiatus, serving as clinical
coordinator for Auburn University’s
Army Warrior Athletic Training
program at Fort Benning, GA. Before
coming to MUS in 1999, Ferebee
was a student athletic trainer for
Ohio State University, followed by
six years with HealthSouth Sports
Medicine in Memphis. After first
joining MUS, he left to spend two
years as the athletic trainer for Officer
Candidates School at Marine Corps
Base in Quantico, VA. He returned
to MUS in 2005 and his pursuit of
education. In addition to being a
Certified Athletic Trainer, Ferebee is a
Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist. In 2007, he earned his
master’s degree in exercise science.

owlS win another bridGeS opener
Regardless of the venue, the MUS varsity football team seems to
enjoy playing in the BRIDGES Kickoff Classic. Having played in all
ten classics at three different sites, the Owls again used this game to
get their season off to a good start. With a 28-7 victory over Millington, MUS took their seventh-consecutive victory in the BRIDGES
Classic, which was held at CBHS this year. The win also marks the
Owls’ twenty-seventh straight triumph, a school record.
Junior QB Toby Baker, starting his first game as the Owls’ signal
caller, ran for two first-half touchdowns and threw another as MUS
jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Almost exclusively out of the shotgun, Baker found seven different receivers in the first half as he led MUS to two scores on their first
two possessions. Both drives culminated in Baker 1-yard sneaks for
touchdowns, and with Gary Wunderlich’s extra points, the Owls led
the Trojans 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Baker added a third score just before halftime as he found a wideopen Forrest Baty for the 36-yard touchdown. Again, Wunderlich’s
PAT extended the lead.
At the break, MUS was firmly in control and had worn down
the Millington defense with a no-huddle, short passing attack. At
the half, Baker was 19-28 for 198 yards. His two favorite receivers
were Baty and William Cross, each with 7 receptions. Defensively,
Millington had some success on the ground, particularly with back
Roland Genesy, who had 75 yards at halftime, but the Owls were
never seriously threatened.
With a 21-point halftime advantage, MUS was determined to
control the ball and play many players in the second half, and they
accomplished both goals.
Following a missed Millington field goal, MUS added a touchdown late in the third quarter by traveling 80 yards in only 7 plays.
Baty went around the right side and outraced the defenders for a
25-yard score as he ended his big evening. Wunderlich again was true as
the lead grew to 28.
Millington made a late touchdown on a Travon Taylor 45-yard run
with just 1:42 remaining in the game to avoid the shutout.
The Owls’ ability to run the ball and not turn it over allowed them
to stay in control and cruise to their seventh-straight season-opening win.
Baker ended the evening with 215 yards passing as he went 21-31. Baty
had 8 catches for 93 yards and 3 carries for 29 yards. Cross hauled in 7
balls for 78 yards. Fernando Van Hook led MUS in rushing with 95
yards, all coming in the second half.

tUrnoverS help MUS deFeat KinGSbUry
With the help of four Kingsbury turnovers and a balanced offensive
attack, the MUS varsity football team overcame an athletic, scrappy
Falcon squad to win, 42-7, in its home opener. With the victory, the Owls
(2-0) secured their twenty-eighth straight win, a school record.
Junior QB Toby Baker rushed for two touchdowns, both from 2yards out. The first came with 2:14 left in the first quarter as the run completed a 6-play, 90-yard drive. The score was set up by Landon Finney’s
75-yard reception that got the ball to the Falcon 2-yard line. From there,
Baker’s run and Gary Wunderlich’s extra point gave MUS the 7-0 lead.

Senior LB Henry Dickinson doubled that advantage as he intercepted a pass by Falcon QB Wesley Whitmore early in the second quarter and returned it 35-yards for the score. With Wunderlich’s PAT, the
Owls looked as if they would blow the game open with the 14-0 lead.
However, Kingsbury (0-2) got back into the game on their next
possession after a 67-yard kickoff return. Randolf Zleh’s 7-yard scamper
closed the lead to 14-7 with 7:39 left in the half.
MUS answered later in the quarter following another Dickinson
forced turnover. After a fumble recovery at the Falcon 26-yard line,
Baker found William Cross from 23-yards out on the second play of
the possession to give the hosts the 21-7 lead at the half. The Owls
added three more scores in the second half and were able to repel Kingsbury each time the Falcons threatened to score.
Baker’s second rushing touchdown came late in the third quarter.
Then, Kingsbury answered by putting together a nice drive that advanced deep into Owl territory. However, facing 4th-and-goal from the
MUS 4-yard line, Whitmore was intercepted by junior DB Alex Dale,
who raced 98-yards for the touchdown. That return set a school record
for longest interception return in school history, besting the 96-yard
mark set by Lowell Hays in 2008.
Finney closed the scoring just 26 seconds later following another
Falcon turnover.
After Dickinson’s second fumble recovery of the game at the
Kingsbury 14-yard line, MUS needed only two plays to score as Finney
went in from 4-yards out. Wunderlich completed his perfect night with
the PAT.
Despite the lopsided score, MUS was challenged by the athletic Falcons, who gained 152 rushing yards. But the opportunistic Owl defense
forced four turnovers to keep Kingsbury from gaining any meaningful
momentum as MUS improved to 2-0.

Playing against one of the top high-school teams in the nation, the MUS varsity football team knew that they would have to
play a perfect game to have a chance in the end. Unfortunately for
the Owls, the opponent, the South Panola (MS) Tigers, ended all
hope for the upset by the half as the Tigers manhandled MUS and
cruised to a 39-2 victory. The loss, before one of the largest crowds in
Hull-Dobbs history, ended the program’s twenty-eight-game winning streak and moved the Owls to 2-1 on the year. South Panola
improved to 3-0, all impressive road victories.
South Panola jumped on the hosts early as Nicklos Brassell,
one of the top senior recruits in Mississippi, darted away from Owl
defenders on the fifth play of the game and scored on a 56-yard run.
Qyendairs Griffin’s run added the two-point conversion as the visitors led, 8-0, just 1:44 into the contest.
The Tiger defense looked just as formidable on the Owls’ first possession as
they forced a punt following three plays
that lost four yards.
MUS finally got some momentum
following Toby Baker’s 41-yard punt.
After an offensive-holding penalty
and a 1-yard loss, center Austin Douglas
snapped the ball over Griffin’s head and
into the MUS endzone. Griffin alertly
swatted the ball out of the endzone, giving the Owls a safety that cut the Tiger
lead to 8-2.
But that safety marked the end of the
Owls’ scoring. Following the kickoff after
the safety, MUS did earn one first down

on a Baker-to-William Cross 22-yard reception that got the hosts into
South Panola territory. But on third down, Baker was intercepted at the
Tiger 32-yard line, and MUS never entered South Panola territory again.
The Tigers put the game away in the second quarter as they scored
four touchdowns in an 8 1/2-minute span. Griffin added three scoring
runs (93, 8, 31), and Marcus Henry hauled in a 12-yard pass from Kendrick Market as South Panola led, 36-2, at the break.
At the half, the Tiger dominance showed on the stat sheet as they
had accumulated 407 total yards, including 323 rushing yards. And they
held the potent MUS offense to only 51 total yards, including -5 yards
rushing. Griffin had 193 rushing yards on only 14 carries with the three
scoring runs.
South Panola added a 26-yard field goal on their first possession of the
second half to go up, 39-2, with 5:15 left in the third quarter. Because of
the 37-point deficit, the clock ran for the rest of the game and shortened
the contest. Neither
team could sustain any
drives for the remainder
of the game as the Tigers
avenged last season’s
home loss to MUS.
The Owls never
got anything going
offensively as they
were controlled by the
athletic, talented Tigers,
and their physical running game found holes
in the MUS defensive
front. South Panola’s
win evened the series
with MUS to 1-1.

MUS boUnCeS baCK to deFeat overton
Despite being outgained in total offense, 370-281, the MUS varsity
football team made the most of their yards as they took advantage of three
turnovers to put away an athletic Overton squad, 41-21, at home.
Looking to overcome the drubbing they endured from South Panola,
the Owls (3-1) jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead and continued to
increase that advantage throughout much of the game.
Freshman kicker Gary Wunderlich attempted his first field goal of
the season on the Owls’ first drive as MUS failed to convert a 3rd-and-5
at the Overton 7-yard line. Wunderlich’s 27-yard kick was true and gave
the hosts the early 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
MUS added two second-quarter touchdowns to build their lead.
First, QB Toby Baker connected with William Cross for a 14-yard
scoring toss to complete a 6-play, 39-yard drive that amassed 2:09. Then,
with under a minute to go before the half, Forrest Baty culminated an
8-play, 43-yard drive with an impressive 8-yard run. Wunderlich’s extra
points increased the lead to 17 at the break. Fernando Van Hook added
his own scoring run on the first possession of the second half as he went
in from 19-yards out to give MUS the 24-0 lead. The possession lasted
only four plays as the offensive line began to control the line of scrimmage and open up big holes for the Owl backs.
However, Overton (1-2) did not quit as they scored on the succeeding possession. On the sixteenth play of the drive, Isaiah Farris hauled in
a 13-yard pass from Adrian Fox for the score. Andres Juarez’s PAT cut the
advantage to 24-7 with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter.
But the Owls quickly quelled the Wolverine optimism. On the ensuing kickoff, Baty broke several tackles, got some good blocks, and raced
79 yards for the touchdown. And just 1:43 later, following an Overton
fumble, Wunderlich added his second field goal as he connected from 33yards out to give the hosts a 34-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Overton again showed they could move the ball in the last quarter
as they put together two long drives. First, Farris scored from 3-yards
out to complete a 9-play, 70-yard drive to close the gap to 34-14. The
Owls answered as Van Hook scored his second touchdown of the game,
this time from 13-yards out, to culminate the 71-yard, 4-play possession with 9:22 left in the game. Then the Wolverines ended the scoring
with a final long drive as Fox scored from 1-yard out to complete a
17-play, 83-yard drive. But the deficit was too large to overcome for the
visitors on this night.
Statistically, Overton held advantages in first downs (22-16), passing yards (214-66), total yards, and time of possession (33:52-14:08),
yet the Owls were +3 in turnover margin and controlled the game on
the ground.

line. MUS looked as if they would score again early in the fourth quarter as they threatened inside the Conquistador 5-yard line, yet a fumble
on the 1-yard line ended that drive.
However, the Owl defense, which had been controlled by the physical OB front for much of the game, began to stop OB and the Owl
offense finally started to take advantage.
First, Forrest Baty fielded the Pittman punt, slipped several tackles,
and went into the endzone from 40-yards out for the score. Wunderlich’s extra point brought the Owls within 11 at 25-14 with 5:35 left
in the game. Then, after having recovered an onside kick, MUS scored
again as Baker sneaked in from 1-yard out to complete the 6-play, 49yard drive. Baker found Baty for the 2-point conversion, and the Owls
now trailed just 25-22 with 4:24 left.
The defense stopped OB on the next possession, and after a punt,
the Owls started on their own 20-yard line with 3:01 left in the game.
Baker hit 5 of his next 7 passes to
advance MUS quickly into Olive Branch
territory. A 29-yard pass to Fernando Van
Hook got the ball to the OB 39. Another
pass to Van Hook got the Owls to the Conquistador 10-yard line with under a minute
to go. But Baker missed his next two passes
to bring up 4th-and-6 with 26 seconds to
go. Electing to go for the win, the Owls
attempted to find the endzone, but a good
defensive play prevented the score as the
Conquistadors held on.
Despite the loss, MUS came back from
25-points down for a chance to win in the
end and showed that they could play with
one of the best teams in the area.
Despite an explosive comeback for a chance to win, the MUS
varsity football team came up just short against powerful Olive Branch,
25-22, to fall to 3-2 on the season.
Olive Branch began the game with an impressive drive as they
used thirteen plays, all runs, to go 67 yards for a touchdown as Jalen
Miller went in from 1-yard out for the score. A missed PAT kept the
score at 6-0 following the 6:40 drive. QB Todd Mays added a second
touchdown on the Conquistadors’ second possession as he went in from
19-yards out to complete the 6-play, 60-yard drive. The Owls turned
back a 2-point conversion attempt to hold the score at 12-0 going into
the second quarter.
Miscues would ultimately stymie the MUS offense. Two turnovers,
both in Olive Branch territory, ended promising drives as the Owls
failed to score. And the Conquistadors took advantage as on the final
play of the first half, Mays found De’Arthur Cowan from 39-yards out
on 4th-and-14 for the touchdown reception. John
Pittman’s kick gave OB the 19-0 halftime lead.
On their first drive of the third quarter, Olive
Branch scored a fourth touchdown as Mays went
into the endzone from 3-yards out. The drive
consumed 5:04 as OB used 9 plays to go 66 yards.
A bad snap prevented the visitors from adding the
PAT, so the score remained at 25-0 with 4:55 left
in the third quarter.
But the Owls did not quit. First, QB Toby
Baker completed a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a
1-yard keeper for the score. Gary Wunderlich’s
PAT closed the gap to 25-7 with 59 seconds left
in the quarter. The big play of the possession
was a pitch Baker made to William Cross, who
scampered 19 yards to get to the OB 32-yard

Midway through the second quarter of their Homecoming
game against East, the MUS varsity football team was struggling
offensively, mired in a scoreless tie, and was looking for a spark to
get the team going. Senior William Cross provided that spark.
Filling in at quarterback, Cross led the team on a 4-play,
57-yard drive that culminated in Forrest Baty’s 15-yard scoring
run. Cross began the possession with a 9-yard scamper. He then
completed his first two passes, both to Landon Finney, to get deep
into East territory, and Baty finished off the drive with his run.
Gary Wunderlich added the PAT to give MUS the 7-0 lead with
7:25 left in the second quarter, an advantage that they would never
relinquish as they would go on to a 35-8 victory.
East (3-3) tried to answer
the MUS score, but each
time they threatened, the
Owl defense held and kept
the Mustangs scoreless as the
score remained 7-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the
defense actually added to the
advantage, thanks to a good
pass rush and freshman James
Prather.
Playing significant varsity
minutes for the first time,
Prather, who had earlier intercepted the ball from East QB
Earvin Morris, recorded his
second interception, this time
against Nicholas King, and
returned it 64 yards for the touchdown. Wunderlich’s extra point gave MUS
the 14-0 lead with 6:59 left in the third quarter.
That score seemed to garner momentum for MUS. The Owls would
add three more touchdowns in a 5:30 span creating a commanding lead.
After having been reinserted, QB Toby Baker began to find open
receivers and threw the ball well to take advantage. First, Baker hit Finney
from 43-yards out as the Owls cashed in another turnover, an interception
by Henry Dickinson, to go up 21-0 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
Following a defensive stop, the Owls scored again as Baker found Cross
for a 26-yard reception that completed a 4-play, 52-yard drive that amassed
only 37 seconds.
And Baker’s third scoring toss came early in the fourth quarter as he
found Cross again, who outran his pursuers to
score from 60-yards out. This put the Owls up,
35-0, with 8:32 left in the game.
From here, with a running clock, East
finally scored as Brian Kimbrow, one of the
leading rushers in the county who had been
held to only 39 yards up to this point, broke
off a long run, racing 75 yards for a touchdown
with 7:13 left in the game. The Mustangs made
the two-point conversion, but East could get
no closer as MUS ran out the clock. The Owls
improve to 4-2.
After the slow start, the Owl offense finally
found some success passing as they gained 170
yards through the air in the second half to break
open a close game. Five turnovers also helped as
the defense kept the potent Mustangs scoreless
until the offense could get untracked.

Late in the third quarter of the game with White Station, the
MUS varsity football team was struggling offensively as the players had seen their early two-touchdown advantage evaporate. So
to give his team a much-needed spark, Coach Bobby Alston and
his offensive staff called a play that they had not used all season.
When senior RB Forrest Baty rolled left with the ball, the Spartans
defenders, as well as almost everyone else in Stokes Stadium, expected Baty
to search for a hole in the line and barrel through, just as he had done so
many times this season. Yet just when Baty seemed to turn upfield, he
stopped and fired a pass to an open Spencer Gruber, who broke a tackle
and dragged another defender into the endzone for the touchdown.
The 63-yard halfback pass gave the Owls the advantage they would
need as they ultimately went on to the 28-14 victory over the defending
6-A state champion.
MUS (5-2) opened up the first quarter with a 14-0 lead over White
Station (1-5) following two scoring runs.
Toby Baker sneaked in from 1-yard out on their opening possession to
complete an impressive 13-play, 80-drive that took up 4:52.
Then, after a Garrott Graham forced fumble and a Peyton Klawinski
recovery on the ensuing possession, MUS needed 7 plays to go 42 yards for
their second score as Fernando Van Hook went in from 8-yards out.
But the Spartan defense got the visitors back into the game in the
second quarter. First, Christon Stephenson intercepted Baker’s pass deep in
MUS territory and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown as White Station
cut the MUS advantage in half.
Then, after a Spartan defensive stop, QB Antonio Cheatham found
Demarius Walls from 39-yards out for a second score as White Station tied
the game following its PAT.
The contest stayed tied throughout much of the second quarter and
into the third as both defenses played well and controlled the game.
But at the 2:30 mark in the third quarter, Coach Alston pulled out the
halfback pass to loosen up the aggressive Spartan defensive, and that play
gave the Owls a lead they would never relinquish.
MUS added one final score in the fourth quarter as Baker found
William Cross on a beautiful 30-yard pass that was tipped by a Spartan
defender. However, Cross maintained concentration and hauled in the
reception that sealed the Owls’ victory.

Baker also added three first-half touchdowns as he snuck in once
from 1-yard out and twice from 2-yards out.
Only a Trey Wilkins to Jordan Lee 25-yard halfback pass in the
second quarter broke up the Owls’ momentum as the Eagles tried to
stay close. Yet the MUS line play was too much for the SBA as the Owls
took a 35-14 lead into the half.
In the second half, the hosts added two touchdowns on their first
two possessions of the half to put
the game away.
First, Van Hook scored his
fifth touchdown of the season as
he powered in from 4-yards out,
and then Baty added his second
score of the contest as he ran
in from 13-yards out with 4:25
left in the quarter. Wunderlich
continued to be perfect on his
extra points as he made all seven
for the game.
The Owls accomplished what
they wanted as they won convincingly over an improving Eagle
squad, played many players, and
avoided any major injuries. They
hope the momentum created from
this victory carries over to the last
two division games and into the
playoffs.
Opening divisional play against St. Benedict, the MUS varsity
football team and coaches were looking for improvement after their off
week. They wanted to begin to peak as they approached the end of the
regular season and headed into postseason action. With the 49-14 victory over the Eagles, the Owls accomplished both goals.
MUS (6-2, 1-0) jumped out early as they stopped SBA (6-2,
0-1) on the opening drive, forced a punt, and took over at midfield.
Needing only 5 plays, the Owls scored as Fernando Van Hook went
in from 11-yards out for the
touchdown. Gary Wunderlich’s PAT gave the hosts
the 7-0 lead just 2:51 into
the game.
But the Eagles showed
that they have some explosive
players as well on the ensuing kickoff. Taking the Toby
Baker kick at the 6-yard
line, Jordan Wilkins raced 94
yards for the touchdown. The
Eagle extra point tied the
score at 7.
However, MUS quickly
regained control and never
relinquished it.

seconds remaining in the half, Banks added the PAT to tie the score
again.
In the second half, the game remained tied for much of the half.
The Owls’ best opportunity came on its first drive of the half as they
used 15 plays to get deep into Purple Wave territory; however, facing
4th-and-1 on the CBHS 3-yard line, the Purple Wave defense stuffed
Baker on a keeper for no gain and held. MUS also missed a field goal
early in the fourth quarter. The Owls reached the CBHS 17-yard line
on its sixth play of the drive, but on 4th-and-1, MUS tried a field goal
that traveled wide left, keeping the score tied at 14.
The Owl defense continued to hold their opponent. A Henry
Dickinson interception, a fourth-down hold, and a missed field goal all
prevented the Wave from taking a lead on their first three possessions of
the half. Unfortunately, CBHS took advantage of their last drive.
Intercepting the ball at their own 14-yard line, the hosts needed
only 5-plays to travel 60 yards. With just 18 seconds remaining in the
game, Ramade Warren ran in from 10-yards out for the score. Banks
added the PAT, and the Owls’ hope for the road victory ended. With
the loss, the Owls fall to 6-3, 1-1. CBHS improves to 8-1, 2-0.
In its divisional matchup with Christian Brothers, the MUS varsity
football team did not trail for almost the entire game. Unfortunately,
the mere eighteen seconds that they did trail happened to be the last
eighteen seconds of the game as the Purple Wave scored a late touchdown to win, 21-14, and hand the Owls their first divisional loss since
September 21, 2007.
MUS got going early as Quay Stallworth intercepted a pass by
CBHS QB Grant Powell on the first play of the game, giving the Owls
possession at the MUS 49-yard line. The Owls drove to the Purple
Wave 4-yard line. However, they were stopped on 3rd-and-goal and
were forced into a field-goal attempt. Gary Wunderlich’s 21-yard
attempt sailed wide as he missed his first kick of his career, and CBHS
held.
But the Owls came back on their next drive. MUS took the first
lead as QB Toby Baker found Landon Finney in the middle of the
field for a 14-yard scoring toss. That play culminated a balanced,
ten-play drive that included five runs and five passes and took up 3:13.
Wunderlich’s PAT with 4:36 left in the first quarter gave the Owls the
7-0 advantage.
But the Purple Wave came back on its next possession as Ryan
Eason, who finished with 108 yards on 14 carries, scored from 3-yards
out to complete the 8-play, 71-yard drive. Paul Banks added the extra
point to tie the score heading into the second quarter.
The Owls retook the lead midway through the second quarter as
they went on another ten-play drive. This time, Baker scored himself as
he snuck in from 3-yards out. The big play of the possession was a 40yard scamper by Forrest Baty to get the Owls inside the CBHS 10-yard
line, and then Baker completed the drive from the 3. Wunderlich’s PAT
was true to give MUS the 14-7 lead with 5:05 left in the half.
But CBHS answered just before halftime, again finishing off a long
drive. On the tenth play of the possession, from the MUS 9-yard line,
Powell hit Kendarion Jennings in the front corner of the endzone for
the score as the Purple Wave traveled 65 yards in 4:49. With just 16

However, late in the half, the hosts finally began to execute well and
take advantage of good field position.
First, despite stalling at the Briarcrest 13-yard line, Wunderlich added his third field goal of the season as he connected from 30-yards out
to give MUS a 10-7 lead with 1:26 left in the half. And the Owls got
one more score before intermission as, after the defense had recovered
a fumble at the Saints 39-yard line with 32 seconds left, Baker found
Landon Finney from 32-yards out on 3rd-and-4 for the touchdown.
Wunderlich’s PAT gave the hosts the 17-7 lead at the break.
In the second half, MUS seemed to control the contest and built a
comfortable lead. In the third quarter, Baker added his second rushing
touchdown, this time from 3-yards out, and Finney caught his second
scoring pass from Baker, this one from 18-yards out, as the Owls built a
31-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, MUS added
two more scores. First, Forrest Baty
ended a 3-play, 73-yard drive with
a 4-yard run with 11:33 left in the
game. Then Fernando Van Hook,
who had earlier hauled in a 72-yard
pass, had an electrifying run as he
went 88 yards for a touchdown.
The run was the fifth longest run in
school history.
Briarcrest did add one final score
as Nagle snuck in from 1-yard out
midway through the fourth quarter,
but MUS had the game in control
at this point, allowing many reserves
to play.
Needing to win its final regular-season contest to earn a first-round
bye in the Division II-AA state playoffs, the MUS varsity football team
shrugged off a sluggish start and ultimately cruised to a 45-14 victory
over Briarcrest, finishing the regular season at 7-3, 2-1.
Quarterback Toby Baker had his best rushing game of his career
as he tallied 146 yards on 19 carries, and he also threw for 237 yards
on 19-24 passing. Altogether, Baker accounted for four touchdowns (2
rushing, 2 passing) as the Owls’ fast attack kept the Saints off-balance
much of the game.
But the Owls needed several series to get the offense going. MUS
scored once in the first quarter after stopping Briarcrest on its second
possession and taking over at its own 7-yard line. After seven plays,
the Owls found themselves at the Owl 49-yard line. From there, Baker
kept an option run, sprinted through several potential
tacklers, and raced into the endzone for the 51-yard
score. Gary Wunderlich’s PAT gave the hosts the 7-0
lead with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
But Briarcrest (8-2, 1-2) answered quickly as on its
next possession, QB B.J. Nagle found versatile WR Tray
Becton-Martin across the middle from 35-yards out
for the tying touchdown. With the Austin Benoy extra
point, BCS had tied the score just 58 seconds later.
Yet after the Saints’ score, both offenses began to
stagnate. Briarcrest struggled to move the football,
particularly on the ground, as the Owls’ front did well
plugging running gaps. And the MUS offense had
opportunities, but an inteception and fumble kept the
Owls from regaining their offensive momentum created
by their early touchdown.

sideline for the touchdown. Wunderlich’s PAT brought the Owls back
to 21-10 with 10:17 left in the half.
Following a second straight turnover,
the Owls took control at the Eagle
21-yard line following a Jason-Manis
fumble recovery. MUS again needed
only one play to score as Baker found
Landon Finney for the touchdown.
Wunderlich’s extra point closed the
gap to 21-17 with 9:50 remaining in
the half.
However, that margin was as close
as MUS would get. BA began to take
care of the ball and found success by being balanced on offense. The
Eagles would score on their final three possessions of the half to take a
commanding 42-17 halftime lead.
BA dominated not only on the scoreboard, but also in statistics at
the half as they accumulated 22 first downs, 122 rushing yards, and 212
passing yards. They held the ball 16:33 out of the 24 first-half minutes
and did not punt in the half.
In the second half, the MUS defense did not allow BA to score, but
the offense hurt themselves with three turnovers in the third quarter.
The Owls did score one final touchdown in the fourth quarter as
Baker again found Finney, this time from 13-yards out, for the score.
Wunderlich’s PAT made the score 42-24, but that was as close as MUS
would get.
Behind an explosive offense that
amassed 42 points and 334 yards in
the first half, the Brentwood Academy
Eagles advanced in the Division II-AA
playoffs with a 42-24 victory over the
two-time defending state champion,
MUS Owls. The loss ended the Owls’
season at 7-4.
BA jumped out early on the hosts
as they scored on their first three
possessions to go up 21-3 early in the
second quarter.
First, D’Montre Wade ran in from
8-yards out to complete a dominating
5-play, 65-yard drive that took only
1:39. Then after a defensive stand, the Eagles scored again as QB Matthew Hamby scrambled in from 12-yards out to double the lead.
MUS scored on their next possession after taking over at their
own 20-yard line. The big play was a 46-yard completion from Toby
Baker to William Cross to get the Owls to the Brentwood Academy
15-yard line. However, the Owls had to settle for a field goal. Gary
Wunderlich’s fourth of the year, this one from 25-yards out, allowed
MUS to pull to 14-3 with 3:33 left in the opening quarter.
But the Owls could not stop the Eagles, who increased their advantage to 21-3 on the ensuing possession as Hamby snuck in from 1-yard
out to complete an 11-play, 38-yard drive that took up 3:47.
But MUS did not quit. Following two turnovers, one by each
team, MUS found itself at the BA 34-yard line. On the next play, Baker

“Stormin’” Norman Thompson (left) over the loudspeaker. Thompson, MUS English teacher by day since 1972,
became the play-by-play announcer for the Owls’ home games in the fall of 1985, when Coach Jake Rudolph
drafted him. Since that first season, Thompson has not missed a home game and declares, “There is no place on
earth that I would rather be on a Friday night.” Over the years, he has honed his skill at reporting and has become
famous for coining such terms as “Tackle made by a host of Owls!” and has even been referred to as the “Voice of
the Owls.” Bill Taylor (center) is also on hand every home game to aid Thompson by spotting players, and Dax
Torrey ’94 (right) lends his expertise as the official game statistician. So next time you attend a home game, take a

Each year a different coach is featured.
Jerry Ellis: Good Things Come to Those Who Wait
A native Memphian with a rich appreciation for
the game of football, Jerry Ellis has been a fixture of the
MUS Owls football team since his arrival in 2001. His
passion for the game and “take no prisoners” coaching
style has allowed MUS football to continue its tradition of
excellence and success for more than ten years.
After retiring from the Shelby County Schools
system in 2001, Ellis joined the MUS Owls as an
offensive and defensive line coach. While his coaching
expertise is invaluable and love of football unshakable,
perhaps his most endearing quality is his love for the
students he guides.
“I remember more about the kids I coached and
funny things that happened at practice than wins and
losses,” he said.
The Makings of a
CoaCh and MenTor
Ellis began his coaching career at Lucy
Elementary School near Millington in 1964 after
graduating from Memphis State University with a
degree in health and physical education. Shortly after
his arrival at Lucy, Ellis became an assistant offensive
and defensive coach for the Millington eighth-grade
team. After two successful years there, he joined
Germantown High School in the fall as an educator,
head eighth-grade football coach, and assistant junior
varsity coach. In 1969, Ellis took the reins of the
freshman team where he achieved an astounding 1022 record over the next 16 years.
desTinaTion MUs
Coach Ellis is proof that good things come to
those who wait. In 1989, 25 years after he began
coaching at Millington, the newly formed Houston
High School offered Ellis his dream job – head
football coach. His boundless energy, drive, and
discipline allowed Ellis and his team to win 19 games
during his four years at Houston.
Success did not come easy for Ellis and his varsity
team. Why you ask? While Ellis may be a brilliant coach,
MUS proved to be one of Houston’s toughest competitors.
Ellis had great admiration and respect for the late Jake
Rudolph’s distinct coaching style.
Ellis said, “Rudolph’s teams always played with great
discipline and minimal mistakes. MUS has always been a
benchmark in high school football.”
Coach Ellis knew that his team must have something
special if it beat MUS. If his team lost, he knew it was
time to instill more discipline in his players. After four
seasons at Houston High School, Ellis returned to
Germantown in 1995 as an assistant defensive line coach
where he remained until 2001.

The PerfeCT BalanCe
Off the field, Ellis enjoys spending time with his
wife of 48 years, Ann. Together they have raised
three sons – Conn, Todd, and Sean – and have eight
grandchildren. When he’s not coaching football, Jerry
can be found with Ann on another type of field: the
golf course.
Ellis may be a disciplined and determined coach,
but he is no stranger to the simple pleasures in life.
Whether it’s playing golf, reading a Vince Flynn novel,
or enjoying a feature film like True Grit, Ellis has found
the perfect balance on and off the field.

Now in its second decade, the Tennessee Super Prep
Conference continues to represent the very best in high-school
football. Begun in 1997, the league originally had seven members
from across the state: Baylor School, Brentwood Academy, Christian
Brothers High School, Father Ryan High School, The McCallie School,
Memphis University School, and Montgomery Bell Academy. Because of the
success and tradition of these seven institutions in the classroom and on the field, the league earned the moniker Super 7.
For nine years, this league established itself as one of the premier conferences in the country. The member schools won over
75 percent of its games against non-league opponents and defeated powerful teams from neighboring states like Alabama,
Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas. In fact, in its first nine years, the league had at least one school ranked in
the USA Today Top 25 poll in seven of those years, a truly amazing record.
Since 2006, the league has expanded, changed the name to Tennessee Super Prep, and now includes all of its original seven
members, plus Battle Ground Academy, Briarcrest Christian School, Ensworth School, Pope John Paul II, and St. Benedict at
Auburndale. The TSSAA has divided the league into two regions, Mid-East and West. All of the teams will enter the play-off
system, which was re-structured in 2009 to last five weeks and end the first weekend in December. With twelve members, the
conference continues to exemplify the adjective super. Therefore, no matter where you may be in the state, if you are enjoying a
Friday night in the Tennessee Super Prep Conference, you are seeing the best in high-school football.
