James A. Miller
Herrick Center
James A. Miller, 84, of Herrick Center, and formerly of
Whitehall, died Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Forest City
Nursing Center. His wife, the
former Sarah Jane Haeseler,
died January 25, 2012.
Born in Orwigsburg, son of
the late Herrwood and Ada
Fisher Miller, he was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran
Church, Whitehall. He was a
graduate of Lehigh University,
earning his bachelors degree
in electrical engineering and a
Masters in Business Administration Degree. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a
quality control engineer for the
Western Electric Company, Allentown. He enjoyed golfing,
swimming, and biking and
spending time in Florida.
Surviving are a daughter:
Nancy Smoyer and husband
Bill, Herrick Center; a son:
Jeff Miller and wife Carole,
Whitehall; 3 grandchildren:
Doug Smoyer and wife Dana;
Ian Miller and Derick Miller; a
great grandson: Parker Smoyer; a brother: Edward Miller,
Lebanon; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was also preceded in
death by a great grandson:
Cash Miller; a sister: Rose Pfeifley; a brother: Jack Miller.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 40 day Lenten
season, which ends on Holy
Saturday. This is a season of
preparation for Celebrating
Easter.

the Ash Wednesday service at
the Thompson United Methodist Church on Wednesday,
February 10th. at 7:00 pm. The
Imposition of Ashes is a reminder of our own mortality,
of repentance and reconciliation.

Betty Lowry
Forest City
Betty Lowry, 88, formerly
of Forest City, died Monday
morning, January 25, 2016 at
Wilson Memorial Hospital,
Johnson City, NY. Her husband Jim Lowry died in 2010.
Born June 25, 1927, in
Browndale, daughter of the
late Anthony “Peter” and
Mary Mihelc Zenewicz. Prior
to retirement Betty worked
at Ames Shower Curtain Factory. She was a member of the
Centennial United Methodist
Church, Forest City. She was
previously a Poll Officer for
Elections in Forest City. She
enjoyed going to the races with
her husband. Betty always enjoyed her music and dancing.
She loved her life and her family, and will be greatly missed.
Surviving are a son Bob
Lowry and wife, Rita, Browndale; two daughters, Debbie
Thompson-Lockett and husband, Philip, Binghamton;
and Carla Lowry, Forest City;
a son-in-law Bob Trusky; a
sister, Cookie Payne and husband, Paul; 11 grandchildren,
16 great-grandchildren, sisterin- law, Ruth Trella; a special
niece Barbara Mihelc; and
nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death by a daughter,
Teri Trusky, and a sister, Rita
Dottle.
Funeral service was Thursday, January 28 in the Kevin M.
Lesjack Funeral Home, Forest
City. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Suhadolnik
Roslyn, PA
Dr. Robert J. Suhadolnik,
age 90, Roslyn, PA, who was
the 1984 Forest City Distinguished Citizen, passed on
Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, after a
short illness. He celebrated his
90th birthday at his home with
family and friends on Aug. 15,
2015. His wife is the former
Dorothy R. Bezek, formerly of
Pleasant Mount.
He was a son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Suhadolnik,
Forest City, and was a 1943
graduate of Forest City High
School.
He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees
from Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D
in biochemistry from Pennsylvania State University in 1956.
His academic career began at
the University of Illinois and
he held faculty appointments
at the National Institutes of
Health, Oklahoma State University, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, and
Temple University School of
Medicine, Philadelphia. He
received a Research Career
Development Award from the
National Institutes of Health.
Most of his career was spent
as fulltime professor in the
Dept. of Biochemistry, Temple
University School of Medicine,
which he joined in 1973, and
where he taught both graduate, doctoral, post-doctoral
and medical students.
As a leader in the field of
Biochemistry, he was recognized and his work significantly impacted, research on
AIDS, cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome. His research
also resulted in more than
100 publications in outstanding scientific journals and ten
chapters in various textbooks.
He also published two books
in the field of biochemistry.
Scientists trained under
the aegis of Dr. Suhadolnik
currently hold advanced academic positions (professors,
chairmen of medical science
departments, or deans) in the
United States and throughout
the world.
He is survived by his wife,
and he was the loving father
of Andrea, Michelle Barratta
(husband Franco), Christine,
Lorraine and Robert Jr. Also
a brother Joseph Suhadolnik,
Venice, Fl.; a sister Sylvia Sisko
Mayers, Forest City; and a sister Antoinette Ravnikar, Plant
City, FL. He was predeceased
by daughter, Andrea, and son,
Robert Jr.
His funeral Mass was to be
held on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd,
from Queen of Peace Church,
820 North Hills Ave., Ardsley,
PA. Interment was private.

Mae Dennis, 85, of Carbondale, died Wednesday, Jan. 27,
2016, at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Robert and Lila
France Tregaskis, Mae enjoyed
crocheting, needlepoint work
and her animals. She worked
at McCauley’s Ice Cream and
then was employed at Lenox
Hill Hospital, Manhattan,
N.Y., in the operating room.
She is survived by three
daughters, Barbara Podunajec
and husband, Paul, Waymart;
Patricia Salak and husband,
Paul, Waymart; and Diane
Sosa Loualid, Carbondale; numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren;
two
brothers, Robert Tregaskis,
Archbald; and Jerry Tregaskis, Florida; three sisters, Edna
Simon, Archbald; Lela Dolph,
Waymart; and Jane Carite,
Carbondale; several nieces
and nephews.
She was also preceded in
death by husbands, James Atkinson and Ernest Dennis; a
son, James Atkinson; a brother, Charles Tregaskis; and
three sisters, Olive Barnicott,
Genevieve Correll and Roberta Ditchko.
Funeral services at the
Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral
Home and Cremation Services
Inc., Carbondale. Interment
will be held at a later date at
Canaan Corners Cemetery,
Waymart.

Helene R. Skates, 87, of
Waymart died Thursday afternoon, January 28, 2016 at
Wayne Woodlands Manor after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband
of 66 years, John Skates who
died in 2014. They were married March 20, 1948.
Born July 22, 1928, she was
the daughter of the late Lester
and Doretta Jones White.
Helene graduated from
Waymart High School, Class
of 1947. She was a homemaker who cared deeply about
the community. She was a
member of the Waymart Fire
Company Ladies Auxiliary,
and most recently worked diligently with the Senior Citizens
organizations in Waymart and
Honesdale. Helene and John
loved their grandchildren
dearly and were very active in
their lives. Helene was a devoted caregiver and babysitter for
her grandchildren from their
birth. As they grew, she and
John supported their sporting
events and all of their accomplishments. She was a member
of the South Clinton Baptist
Church.
She is survived by her son,
Randy Skates and his wife
Barbara of Waymart; two
grandchildren, Jesse Skates
and his companion Amanda
Dickson, and Stacy Skates and
her companion Evan Munley;
two brothers, Charles White
and his wife Jane of Carbondale, and Thomas White of
Waymart; a sister-in-law, Mrs.
Robert White of Manville, NJ.
She was also preceded in
death by two brothers, Donald
White, Robert White, and her
sister, Betty Robinson.

Doreen R. Moran, 71, of
Vandling, died Monday
evening, January 25, 2016
at the Wayne Memorial
Hospital, Honesdale.
Born in Vandling on May
11, 1944, daughter of the
late Frank and Rose Peterlin Supancik, she was a
member of Ascension Parish, Forest City. She was a
graduate of Forest City Regional High School. Prior
to her retirement, she was
employed as a seamstress
and a home health aide.
Surviving
are
two
daughters: Annette Burns
and husband Samuel, III,
Lunenburg, MA; April Ann
Moran, Vandling; three
grandchildren: Courtney,
Sam; and Morgan Burns;
a sister: JoAnn Kovaleski,
Richmondale; a brother:
Frank Supancik, Union
Dale; and several nieces
and nephews.
She was also preceded in
death by her first husband:
William Hoinsky and her
second husband: Jack Moran.
As per her request, her
body was donated to the
Humanity Gifts Registry,
Philadelphia. A memorial
Mass was held Tuesday,
February 2 in Saint Joseph’s
Church, Delaware St., Forest City. Arrangements by
the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street.
