Teacher’s Guide
This draught excluder workshop is a fun and interesting activity
which allows your group to explore the concepts of energy
efficiency in the home in an educational and tactile way.
Introduction
Introduce children to the concept of energy efficiency. This can be done
by asking the group questions:
> Where does our energy come from? Gas, coal, nuclear, renewable.
> Why do we need to save energy? CO2 emissions, greenhouse gasses,
climate change.
> What ways can we save energy? Use less electricity/gas, use public
transport, eat local food.
> What is a draught excluder? Reduces drafts on doors or windows.
> How can draught excluders help us save energy? Less draughts
means hot air doesn’t escape, because of this you can turn your
heating down but still stay as warm.
If there is time undertake the ‘Find the Draught’ activity in order to
allow children to understand how to identify drafts.

3. Wrap the filled leg inside the
pillow case or square of fabric
and secure the ends with a bit
of string or elastic band.
4. Add ribbons to the ends to
make it look nicer and one in
the middle to hold together if
needed, you can also add the
draught excluder workshop
tags with instructions of how
to use your draft excluder.
5. Take your draft excluder home
and use it to keep your house
warm. Remember it will only
cut your carbon emissions if
you remember to turn your
heating down a little.
