We did it! I can hardly believe that
we are celebrating our first Advent
and Christmas together as one
congregation. Among our many
blessings is God’s love bringing us
together in one community of faith
that fills ours hearts with joy.
Last Sunday, November 30th, we
began the season of Advent. It is
the season of anticipation when we
express our hopes and longings,
while making room for God’s
dreams to be born among us. is
opening the door to a fresh infusion
of God’s Spirit, knowing that when
God and human love unite, miracles
happen. Even or especially in
challenging times, both personal
and global, God offers the promise
of hope. It cannot happen without
God and will not happen without us.
So Advent invites us to remember
stories of people who said “yes” to
God’s dream for our world and to
ready ourselves for the birth of
Christ in surprising ways.
The first time I remember saying
“yes” to God was as a twelve year
old when I found myself attending
church on my own without the rest
of my family. It seemed strange that
I was the only one getting up early
to go to church on Sunday
mornings. I am not sure whether it
was the friends I made or the treats
we were given from my Sunday
School teacher or the desire to
know more about this mysterious
and wondrous God who was at
work in me and our world. No
matter the reason, the desire to
be close to God and to share
God’s love with others has been a
constant in my life. The Advent
and Christmas seasons are
special times to remember and
strengthen that bond of love in our
lives. I pray that all of us may
experience and share this love
with the people in our lives.
This Advent Season I am
looking forward to all of our
special services as we prepare to
receive the fulfillment of God’s
love through the celebration of
Christ’s birth once again into our
lives. All of our Advent and
Christmas services are listed

highlight being the Christmas Eve
service which is filled with the
magic, wonder and beauty of
Emmanuel, God with us. I hope
you and your family will be able to
join in our Advent and Christmas
adventure at Bayview United

As we approach the end of 2014, we look back with gratitude for all that was accomplished
this year to bring Bayview United into being, and look forward with anticipation to our bright

dates, sickness, etc. is the responsibility of the member and should be reported to the head usher for that particular week.

families participated in the Terry Fox Walkathon. We have all been affected by cancer so we

Hospitality and Pastoral Care
The Hospitality and Care committee met on
October 26th. Lorinne Chong presided as chairwoman and Ruth Sumi as recording secretary.
A Congregational Gathering was held on
November the 14th. 80 people attended the event

Fujita. Karen Quinton and John Liddle collaborated
on an excellent concert with many talented

well. The evening was very successful. Everyone
enjoyed themselves.
Prayers and get well wishes are extended to

those in need of comfort, hope and healing.
Joan Bennett has recovered from surgery. Byron and
Shirley Tanaka and Micky Sugamori have also
recovered from their accidents.

love support and compassion in their lives. Prayers
may be for a relative, a friend or even for yourself.
Prayer shawls have been made for shut-ins in
need and presented to them by Rev. Cindy.
More knitters are welcome to join. Yarn is available if
you would like to make one. Please contact Pat
Idenouye, Noby Matsugu or Betty Tomihiro if you are
interested in becoming involved.
The sharing table was held on November the
16th. Notice of the next sharing table will be placed
in the church bulletin.
Special gifts will be delivered by various committee
members to shut ins during the Christmas season.

Stewardship Ministry Team
I have shared the following definition of Christian stewardship in CJUC newsletters in the past
but thought it would be a good idea to have it printed in this first edition of the Bayview
United Church newsletter.
Stewardship development is an active part of faith formation for all ages. Being stewards, individually
and as communities
of stewards, is about daily decision-making…. decisions about:

how we earn, spend, invest, and share money




how we relate justly to the rest of creation
how we invest and share time and talents
how we share who we are as God’s beloved children
how we organize our whole life to share God’s good news
Our life is God's gift to us, how we use our life (time, talent, treasure) is our gift to God.
Thanks to everyone for their continued Christian stewardship.
The Stewardship Ministry team have been working hard to put together the finances of the
two congregations. It is an ongoing task and I would like to express my thanks to everyone
concerned, for their effort. Thanks also to those who have agreed to help to count the
offering after the worship service each Sunday. We now have enough counters for four teams
of three but we could always use a few more to make a fifth team. If you would like to help,
just let me know.
If you would like to make a donation to the church using a cheque, please make the
cheque payable to Bayview United Church.
PAR is a direct debit program that allows people to support their church through an
automatic monthly withdrawal from their bank account. The United Church administers the
program following the giver's wishes (e.g., a specified amount for local church expenses and
another specified amount for the Mission and Service Fund). Once a month, all PAR givings
will be debited from your bank account and then the total, less a service fee of $0.50, will be
electronically transferred to BUC’s bank account.You can change the amount of your
contribution at any time and you may also revoke your PAR authorization at any time.
An added benefit of PAR is that it reduces the workload for the counters who count and
record the offering every Sunday. If this method of supporting your church works for you,
please request a PAR authorization from me.

Our Vietnamese Friends
You may have read in the Toronto Star recently that it was 35 years ago in November that
the first Vietnamese ‘boat people’ arrived in Toronto.
In the summer of 1979, our minister, Rev. George Tomita called an emergency board
meeting to discuss the possibility of sponsoring refugees. We sponsored four young men, ages
15 to 20 who were in a refugee camp in Malaysia for seven months and on November 29th,
1979, 35 years ago, we welcomed our four boys. We found accommodations for them, painted
the rooms, furnished the apartment with donated furniture and had jobs waiting for them. Five
years later, we sponsored another young man, age 23, who was related to our boys. He had
spent two years living in a refugee camp in Thailand.
Our refugees have become our friends and think of us as family. We were invited to all five
weddings. Between them, there are seven children ranging in age from seven to twenty-four.
One is a pharmacist; one has graduated with a kinesiology degree and is now taking a two year
course in massage therapy; one has graduated from college in mechanics and is returning to
take a course in air conditioning and refrigeration; and one has just started a course in the
medical field.
All the husbands and wives are employed except for one who is actively seeking
employment. They all own their own homes and live in the Toronto area.

meet with them for dinner once a year to keep in touch. This year, twenty of us met at a
Vietnamese restaurant to celebrate their 35th anniversary in Canada. We were their surrogate
parents and are so proud of them. It has been a most gratifying experience for all of us.

As most of you know, Jean Javanshir, our Church Administrator, is retiring at the end of December
after a long career serving Oriole-York Mills United Church and now Bayview United Church. Jean
and her husband, Jake, have just sold their home and purchased a condo which they are currently
renovating. Jean is very excited about this next phase in her life. As she is busy with renovations
and packing, we will be doing a farewell presentation for her early in January. If you wish to
contribute towards her parting gift, please contact Don Worth at 416-447-1922 or

We are also pleased to welcome our new Church Administrator, Jeffrey Dale, who will start with us
on January 5th, 2015. The church office hours starting in January will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to

Annual Food & Craft Bazaar! This year was once again a
great success and we know that such a massive
undertaking would not be possible without all of our
efforts. Once again, we would like to thank Toriichi
Catering for their donation of maki sushi and Marufumi
Foods for their donation of extra noodles!

Turkey Lunch held in December. If you are
willing to help Co-ordinate this special
tradition, please speak to Grace Omoto,
Theressa Takasaki or Naomi Takasaki. We will
guide you through this year’s process so that
you can put your spin on it for next year.
