5 August 2013 Program Mike Haile, General Manager WDWS
29 July 2013 Volume 88, No. 5 Editor - Tom Williams National Best Club Bulletin 1980-81, 1981-82, 1986-87 1987-88, 1998-99, 2012-13 5 August 2013 Program Mike Haile, General Manager WDWS-AM & WHMS-FM 5 August 2013 Meeting Mike Haile, General Manager WDWS-AM & WHMS-FM I can't do a better job of telling you about Mike Haile than to print what he has said about himself: "I have truly been blessed to have the opportunity to do what I do all these years. My father took me down to WHB Radio in Kansas City when I was five and from there I was hooked on a radio career. While a junior in high school, I was hired by the late Chuck Norman, a St. Louis broadcast legend, to work weekends on WGNU-FM. After graduation from high school I moved to California and got a degree at Cal State Long Beach. During my time in college I had the good fortune to work at KWOW in Pomona both on and off the air. It was there I got a real interest in the program management side of the business. After graduation I traveled around the country working with automated stations for Bloomington based Systems Marketing Corp. Then it was another stop in California working at KFI and KRLA. I came to Champaign in the Spring of 1978 to work a group of stations that included K-104. 22 years later I made the move to be a part of the team Stevie Jay put together here at WDWS/WHMS. We are so lucky to have a terrific audience that has welcomed us every morning in their homes, at work or in the car. The rest of my day is balanced between my management responsibilities inside our building, being a part of a number of philanthropic projects as well as life at home with my wife Linda, daughter Jennifer and son Christopher. Thanks again for starting your day with Brian Barnhart, Carol Vorel, Dave Loane, Dave Shaul, Greg Soulje, Tony Clements and me." History of WDWS and WHMS WDWS-AM, Champaign County’s first commercial radio station, signed on at 8 a.m. on January 24, 1937, from studios located on the second floor of the original News-Gazette building. The process of creating WDWS began in March of 1935 when David W. Stevick applied to the Federal Communication Commission for a permit to operate the station. After his death in December of that same year, his wife, Helen, and daughter, Marajen, decided to continue the project. The station’s call letters carry his initials. December of 1948 brought the first commercial FM signal to East Central Illinois when WDWS-FM took to the air. That same month the entire operation moved from downtown Champaign to its current location on South Neil. The new facility featured a 420-foot high tower, which at that time was said to be the highest structure in East Central Illinois. WDWS has been a “full service” radio station since its inception. A strong local talent line-up, the largest radio news department in East Central Illinois and a strong commitment to sports have been the anchors of the WDWS brand. WDWS was a CBS affiliate for some 65 years before moving to ABC in 2002. WDWS has been a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball affiliate since 1937 and, along with sister station WHMS, has been the flagship radio station for University of Illinois sports for close to 70 years. The stations produce all sports broadcasts to a 50 station statewide network. WDWS-FM simulcast the programs of WDWS-AM until 1966 when the station created a separate identity with an automated beautiful music format. In the late 80’s the station transitioned away from an instrumental music format to one that featured soft contemporary vocals. During this transition WDWSFM took on a new set of call letters, WHMS, in honor of Helen Mary Stevick. Over the last decade WHMS has evolved into a personality driven Adult Contemporary format. WDWS and WHMS have an unparalleled reputation as the two radio outlets truly dedicated to the needs of the community. Larry Stewart (left) received his bachelor's in radio journalism from the University of Illinois, where future comedians Arte Johnson and Allan Sherman were among his fraternity brothers. He worked at WDWS from 1941 until his retirement in late 1980 except for a stint in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946. Coming Events 12 August 2013 . Mike Thomas Fighting Illini Athletic Director There have been tremendous changes in the Fighting Illini Athletic Program in the little over two years Mike Thomas has been in charge. We have a new football coach, two new basketball coaches (men's and women's), a $150 million renovation on the State Farm Center (formerly the Assembly Hall), and a huge state of the art scoreboard at the south end of Memorial Stadium, and much more. I look forward to getting to meet Director Thomas, learning more about his vision for the future of the Fighting Illini Program, and the future of the embattled football program. This is a great week to bring a guest or prospective member to lunch. 19 August 2013 Dr. Phyllis Wise, Chancellor University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Campus Phyllis Wise is Chancellor of the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and a Vice President of the University of Illinois. Dr. Wise is the chief executive officer for the Urbana-Champaign campus and is responsible for all financial programs, campus policies, and priorities with the mission of ensuring a transformative educational experience for America’s next generation of leaders. The Urbana-Champaign campus has a budget of $1.5B with more than $400M in research expenditures. There are 42,000 students and 3,000 faculty members. The University is renowned for its interdisciplinary collaborations, advances in human understanding, community outreach, global partnerships, and life-changing scientific developments. 26 August 2013 To Be Announced Anne Johnston is working on a good program . for this Monday and as you can see from the upcoming programs she has arranged you can count on Anne getting us an excellent speaker for this week. Your program committee of Tom Williams, Nancy Williams and Anne Johnston are always trying to book the most interesting and timely speakers possible to make your Exchange experience fun and rewarding. If you have someone you would really like for us to get or a subject you would find especially compelling, please let Tom or Nancy know so they can get the appropriate speakers. . Coming Events 2 September 2013 Labor Day Holiday - No Noon Meeting As we do every Labor Day now, instead of having a noon luncheon we'll be handing out the remaining 1,700 flags at our fifth Labor Day GiveAKidAFlagToWave Program with the Urbana Exchange Club. My hope for this Labor Day is that we have the same kind of day that we last Fourth of July, mild temperatures and a beautiful sunny day. In the last five years we had both the Fourth of July and Labor Day Parades rained out so we deserve to have a year with beautiful weather on both holidays for one of our best programs. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the holiday from Committee Chair Frank Scantlebury. The Labor Day Parade is not as big a parade in terms of spectators with children but we still need to have someone to ride in the back of the truck and a couple members to help the Urbana Exchangites pass out the flags. 9 September 2013 (Monday 6:00 PM) Annual Exchange Club Picnic Hosted By Dottie & Walt Mikucki The date has now been set and we will be having our picnic this year on September 9th at Dottie and Walt Mikucki's home at Maynard Lake. This is always one of the fun events of the year so you don't want to miss out on the great food and fellowship. Mark your calendar and start planning your favorite covered dishes for the event. Remember, I love chocolate cake and chocolate pie. 30 September 2013 Dr. Robert "Bob" Easter, President . University of Illinois Anne did it again, this time by arranging to have the President of the University of Illinois come speak to our club this Monday noon. Dr. Easter is an outstanding educator and an even better person. He has served as a Professor of Animal Sciences & Nutritional Sciences, Head of the Department of Animal Sciences, Dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences (ACES), Interim Chancellor of the Urbana-Champaign Campus, Interim Vice President of the U of I, and as of July 1, 2012, Dr. Easter became the President of the University of Illinois. I really look forward to meeting Dr. Easter and hearing his vision for our great university. And best of all, he just received and accepted a two-year extension on his contract. Coming Events 7 October 2013 National Fire Prevention Week (6-13) Champaign Fire Chief Doug Forsman National Fire Prevention Week is October 6-13 and it's always held the week in which the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire on October 10, 1871 falls. The fire caused the loss of hundreds of lives, left 100,000 homeless & destroyed 3.3 sq miles, about a third of the city. Exchange Clubs all across America commemorate this week and many clubs hold their Fire Fighter of the Year Award luncheons. Since we traditionally hold our award program in the early spring who could be more appropriate to speak to us this week than our retiring Champaign Fire Chief Doug Forsman, no one! Chief Forsman has announced his retirement date as November 29, 2013 and I don't want to miss the opportunity to hear from the chief one more time. Doug has been an outstanding chief and leader for our community and he will be sorely missed, especially by your editor. Let's have a great turnout on October 7th to show Doug how much he is appreciated. 12 December 2013 (Thursday) Champaign-Urbana Exchange Inter-Club Christmas Party Champaign Country Club Anne Johnston has arranged for us to host this year's Exchange Club Christmas Party at the Champaign Country Club. This annual event is one of the highlights of the Exchange year. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar so you won't discover you have a conflict as we get closer to Christmas. We'll have more details later on this year as the program begins to come together but, if you have any good ideas who you would like us to have as our entertainment at the party please let me know soon as we have to begin making the arrangements. The Illini Football Season Is Almost Upon Us With the start of the college football season less than a month away it's time to make a decision as to whether we want to continue the Football Guessing Contest this year. I enjoy doing it and I know several of our members enjoy it too, but if we don't have enough interest to continue it I will need to know soon. I have to prepare the forms for the first week and bring them to the August 26th luncheon. The Fighting Illini play their first game this year on August 31st when they host the Southern Illinois Salukis. 29 July 2013 Meeting Invocation Pledge of Allegiance . Attendance Attendance Drawing . - Richard Adkins Frank Scantlebury 8 Exchangites & 1 Guest $10.00 Bob Decker (Absent) The Parkview City Building Prayer for Rain Statue & Fountain It was a nice luncheon today with the temperature hovering around 75 degrees and the sun shining brightly as we finally were able to get together with our speaker. The first time Adam was scheduled our luncheon had to be canceled because of snow. The second time he had to cancel at the last minute because he had to go out of town on business. Just like the old adage, "the third time is the charm." With Wally Lehman flying to Germany over the weekend it was really nice to have Richard Adkins with us today even though he was walking with a cane. Just as I'm starting to get better from my spine surgery Richard is having a hard time with his back. This is just a guess, but I can't help wonder if the new kitchen he put in might have something to do with his pain, and I don't mean just the cost. Lincoln Building The Greystone Although our speaker didn't show his slides as planned, Adam did a really nice job of telling us about the commission he chairs and putting to rest some of the false impressions people have. Illinois Traction Bldg. The Georgian On this page and the following pages you will see photos of all the Champaign Landmarks recognized by the Historic Preservation Commission. I've even added a few that I think should be added to their list. West Side Park Atkinson Monument Rick Orr Florist Champaign Historic Preservation Commission The Champaign Historic Preservation Commission meets in the City Council chamber at the Champaign City Building on the first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. The Commission consists of seven regular members and two alternates that are appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council.
