His carvings have been shown at exhibitions throughout the US since 1981. He has won over 100 Best of Show Awards. In 1988 he took the Best in the World Award at the Ward World Championship Carving Competition in Ocean City, MD. In the mid ‘90’s, he was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer and was given few months to live, but he beat the odds and learned two valuable lessons: 1. If you want to do something, do it now 2. Rules: Entries must be of carved wood as the main material. They may be in any pose, full bodied except when on water, (flat bottomed), detailed, and painted to your highest ability. The standard for judging is the live bird. Categories: Waterfowl, Songbirds, Birds of Prey, Shorebirds, and Others. (See Page 7 for entry codes.) Judged by three qualified judges who examine the images of the carvings as if they were real carvings rather than viewed on a large screen . They will be judged comparatively in depth as usual. Entries must have been made by the entrant and never before entered in this show (except for Gallery display items). 2. Entries must be carved of wood, cork, stretched canvas, or foam (Division G). Metal or other materials can be used as a major support. 3. Components used to create the environment for decorative divisions must be entirely hand formed in the Open level. Cast metal components are acceptable in the Intermediate and Novice level only. 4. Any visual identifying marks will be covered during the competition. 5. A deep brand with carvers name and date required on all Future Antique entries. 6. You may enter Open, Intermediate, or Novice based on IWCA levels of competition in all divisions except Foam Decoys, Future Antiques, Bench, Feather & Quill Carvers presents a rare opportunity to spend the day with Jerry Poindexter. Thursday, September 10, 2015 Water Resources Education Center Classroom 8:30 am to 4:30 pm In the morning, carve the head of a White-crowned Sparrow. The blank will be provided. Bring your usual equipment for carving a bird head. List provided when you register. Learn the anatomy of a head as you carve Make measurements from study skins. Young Guns, and the Mini Decoy Trader. Only Amateur (Intermediate/Novice) entries are eligible for the Will Hayden Award. Open and Amateur for Virtual. After lunch, paint your White–crowned Sparrow. A casting will be provided in case you don’t finish the head. 7. Cocktail Birds or Fish are donated by the carvers for the banquet auction. Proceeds from auction will be used for next year’s show. 8. Judges determinations are final and not subject to review. 9. The show chairman will have final authority on all show issues. 10. Mailed entries (except for Virtual Contest) must be received by: Byrn Watson, 194 Summerside Drive, Centralia, WA 98531 no later than Tuesday September 8, 2015. Hand carried entries must be entered by 9 am Saturday, September 12, 2015. Entries must remain on display until 4 pm Sunday, September 13, 2015. Mailed entries with prepaid postage will be returned in the week after the show. 11. Carvers wishing to sell their entries must so indicate and specify the selling price on the entry tag. Checks should be made payable to the carver by the buyer. Carvings that have been sold may be picked up at the close of the show at 4 pm on Sunday from the carver. 12. The Columbia Flyway show and/or the Water Resources Education Center cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to artworks or personal items. 13. Your signature on the registration form indicates that you have read and understand the show rules.
