There is a point when a program must be cancelled or modified if there is insufficient registration. All programs require a high level of coordination often including facility scheduling, staffing, volunteer recruitment and purchasing of supplies. Photo Policy Participants permit the taking of photos and videos of themselves and their children during Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department activities, programs, and special events for publication and use as the department deems necessary. Volunteers Many of our programs depend on volunteer help. If you wish to put your expertise to use in a program or would like to find out what volunteer opportunities are available, please call us at 891-5015. Sponsorship The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has many opportunities for sponsorships. We offer only first-class, quality programs and special events. If you are interested in how we can help you reach your customers and promote your business, contact Connie Peterson at 891-5015. Governing Body of Rio Rancho Greggory D. This league is designed to allow boys and girls in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades the opportunity to compete against teams from other Rio Rancho schools in the same grade level. Starting in November, each Rio Rancho elementary school will have one or more co-ed teams, each consisting of 3rd and 4th graders. Rio Rancho middle schools will suit up two or more teams of 6th graders. There will be a boys team and a girls team. Students attending private school, home school, or those that live outside the Rio Rancho Public School District will be placed on the team at the school they would be attending. All players will be accepted through the registration deadline. No need to stand in a registration line for hours in advance! The method of placing players on a team will be random but with consideration on a case-by-case basis if there is a special circumstance. While we want your kids to have fun and play alongside their friends, allowing parents or coaches to pick teams poses challenges. Mr. Stone taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan for many years before developing a new technique which he called T’ai Chi Chih. T’ai Chi Chih is simple and easy to learn with benefits usually beginning from the first class. The gentle movements emphasize a flowing continuity and strongly stimulate the flow and balance of Chi or the “vital force” in the body. Benefits of regular T’ai Chi Chih practice can include stress reduction, weight and blood pressure control, increased energy, and a greater enthusiasm for life. As the practitioner becomes relaxed a new understanding and perspective is formed, creative energy flows more freely and greater joy in everyday life becomes apparent. Now is the time to experiment and experience new things. Many of us have never exercised our creative potential. Why not now? Whether you have been an artist for years or are just interested in exploring the possibilities, we have a variety of art and craft classes that will appeal to you. Here are some of the many offerings available to MSC members: Beginning and Intermediate Drawing Students learn the basics of shapes, shading, perspective, composition, proportions, balance, and contour drawing then progress to trying some new ideas and techniques. The beginning class is the foundation for other art courses. Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor Learn about watercolors, brushes, brush strokes, color mixing, value scales, lift off techniques, and much more. The intermediate class is for those who want to be adventurous with experimental projects, still life, and other “how-to” projects. Volunteer Opportunities The MSC Volunteer Program promotes the skills and talents of people of all ages. Volunteers serve as leaders and teachers as well as participating in the daily operations of the Center. Some of the positions in which volunteers are needed are: Class Instructors: Lead and instruct students in such areas as languages, gardening, computers, arts and crafts, health and wellness and more. Volunteer Van Drivers: Transport MSC members in 14-passenger vans on outings. Drivers enjoy benefits such as free entrance to events and lunch or dinner reimbursement on certain trips. Meal Site Assistance: Includes a variety of tasks associated with the meal program. Please contact Liz Smyth at 891-5018 for more information about these and other volunteer opportunities. Oriental Brush Painting This ancient, traditional eastern art uses a brush, ink, and paper to draw natural scenes such as plants, animals, birds and fish. Learn this style of painting for a relaxing experience. Ceramics Offered two times each week, this popular class provides an opportunity to hone your painting skills and learn how the kiln works. It also provides a great opportunity for meeting people with like interests. Woodcarvers Group Decorating wood has always been an important art form. In fact, wood carving was a favorite means of expression in ancient Egypt and China. Today, wood carving is being nurtured at MSC by a dedicated group of men and women who form the woodcarvers group. If you have wanted to carve, but weren’t sure you could do it, now is the time to find out. Join the woodcarvers group and let them help you realize your dream. The woodcarvers group meets every Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Basket Weaving Group This group has garnered awards at the State Fair for the beautiful and creative baskets they have produced. You, too, can learn the art of basket making. Start with a basket kit available from the leader and try your hand. Incorporate styles and materials to produce a basket that expresses your sense of style. All skill levels are welcome. This ongoing group meets every first and third Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Quilting Group The MSC quilters welcome all new and experienced members to learn or perfect their quilting skills. This weekly group not only works on their own projects, but also does charity projects such as pillowcases for the pediatric ward at a local hospital. The quilting group meets every Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Fiber Arts Group On the fourth Thursday of each month, join this group of talented fiber artists as they share their projects and talents. Quilting, embroidery, ribbon work, applique, sewing, knitting and crocheting, and all other varieties of fiber work are represented within the group. Presentations focus on the various techniques and areas of expertise of the group members. Scrap Booking Wondering what to do with all those photos and memorabilia hiding in boxes and drawers?
