It can be a hard transition going from the freedom of summer
to the structure of being back in the classroom for both
teachers and students. The beginning of the school year is
also busy with many tasks including the development of new
programs. Contact us at anytime if you need assistance with
resources.
An exciting new / old resource relates to “Arcobaleno.”
Constantly in demand, this evergreen has had the picture
story books from each theme pack transferred into eBooks
with audio, enabling them to be used on a computer or
through the interactive whiteboard. This ensures that the
program is able to continue being used in primary schools.
Consideration now needs to be given to the renewal of
subscriptions to the Resource Centre and a current form is
enclosed within this Newsletter. A reminder that there is now
the option to pay subscriptions via Electronic Funds Transfer
(EFT). However, it is vital that a remittance form and
subscription form is forwarded together with all relevant
information.

may be of interest to you and your students. Details are
below :

Education programs and resources
The Museo Italiano Melbourne explores the themes of migration and settlement, diversity, identity,
language, culture and community life. An education kit including student activities at different levels
(beginners, intermediate and advanced) based on the permanent exhibition are available for teachers
to download from the website: www.museoitaliano.com.au
The following Education Programs for Museo Italiano Melbourne will be offered:
La storia in valigia- Exploring Italian migrant stories
Staff led program for Years 5-10
A student centered program about the stories of Italian migrants and their contribution to Australia.
The workshop explores the themes within the exhibition at Museo Italiano through a series of objects,
photographs and information about Italian migrants.
The workshop will cater for all levels of comprehension and can be facilitated in Italian and/or
bilingually. The workshop will be followed by a visit to Museo Italiano exhibition. Students are
encouraged to complete museum activities in Italian, which will be available for teachers to download
and bring on the day of the excursion from the website: www.museoitaliano.com.au
Museo Italiano- Introductory talk for Advanced level of Italian
Staff led program for Years 11- 12 (VCE)
An introductory talk of the permanent exhibition presented in Italian with a focus on the contribution
and identity of Italians in Victoria. This session will be followed by a visit to Museo Italiano exhibition.
Students are encouraged to complete museum activities in Italian, which will be available for teachers
to download and bring on the day of the excursion from the website: www.museoitaliano.com.au
Museo Italiano-Self Guided school group visits
Teachers can organize self-guided visits to the Museo Italiano exhibition and can download the
museum self-guided activities from the Education kit available from the website:
www.museoitaliano.com.au There is no cost for self-guided visits to the museum, however,
bookings are essential.

The education kit for Museo Italiano includes teacher notes, Tuning in, Museum visit and Post visit
language activities at the beginners, intermediate and advanced levels that link to LOTE (Italian) and
other domains: Humanities- History; Personal Learning, Civics and Citizenship, Communication;
Thinking Processes and ICT.
The Italian language activities in the Education Kit cover a range of themes such as, la vita
quotidiana -il divertimento- lo sport- il lavoro- i bambini. The kit also includes
pictures and information on museum objects and key historical images.

The Museo Italiano is open for self-guided school group visits from Tuesday- Friday at the
following times: 10am, 11am, 12 midday, 1pm & 2pm. Cost-NIL.
Staff led programs are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays ONLY. Times can be negotiable.
Cost of sessions: $66 (up to 30 students) or $33 (1-10 students)

Giovanna Garzoni 1600 – 1670
The following article is due to Angela Zerella, Mullum P.S., who while integrating an Italian
Language unit of work with Art for an Italian Day activity first brought the works of this wonderful
artist to our attention.
Apart from making students aware of the work of this 17th century Italian female artist, Angela used
the series of her artworks to explore shape, composition and colour.
Students developed skills in observational drawing, and including their own range of fruits or related
subject matter to create a composition using overlapping of subject matter. They were also
challenged to strategically place an insect, partially hidden object or other natural object, such as a
shell or stone in their artwork.
Giovanna Garzoni, born in 1600 and was one of the first women
artists to practice the art of still life painting, in a largely maledominated field. Although she enjoyed a considerable reputation
in her life-time, she is rarely mentioned by contemporary sources.
She did however, succeed in having a life of steady work and
constant success.
Scholars have speculated about Garzoni’s early training and though none have come to any firm
conclusion it is believed that as a young woman, Giovanna Garzoni left her native town of Ascoli, in
the Marche, and worked under patronage in major cities, beginning in Venice, in 1625, during which
time she also composed a volume of calligraphy. This included capital letters illuminated with fruits,
flowers, birds, and insects. These subjects were to become her specialty, and tempera on vellum
was her preferred medium.

By 1630 she was in Naples, at the court of the Spanish Duke of Alealà and in 1632 she moved to
Turin, and worked for five years at the court of the Duke of Savoy, mainly painting portraits.
However, Garzoni’s refined interpretation of plants and animals suited the taste of her aristocratic
patrons, like the Medici family, and she decorated many of their villas.
It was in Florence that she was especially appreciated where she stayed in the 1640s, and these were
some of her most productive years. She worked as court miniaturist to the Grand Duke Ferdinando
II, his wife the Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere, and other important families. She painted
portraits, copied old masters, and created original and very stylized still-life compositions, placing
subjects against neutral back-grounds with odd manipulations of scale and perspectives. The
definition of miniature painting referred not to size but to the technique, similar to illuminated
manuscripts, which brilliantly created an almost three-dimensional effect. Her freshness of style
comes from a delicate balance between natural science illustration and her own gift of decorative
design. It is possible she used a convex mirror, as these were a standard aid in every painter’s
studio.

After 1654, her name appears frequently in the records of the Accademia di San Luca, an academy
for the study of the fine arts in Rome. Whilst there, she continued to paint for her Medici patrons
until her death in 1670, ending her days as a Cappucin tertiary at the Accademia, to whom she
bequeathed all her own papers, her libro delle mininature which was a form of sample book for
potential customers, and her considerable art collection.
The rediscovery of Giovanna Garzoni’s work began with her inclusion in a classic exhibition of Italian
still-life paintings in Naples in 1964. Subsequently, many studies and publications have brought
knowledge of her scant biography and catalogue of work to the current level. Garzoni’s paintings
were so well liked that, according to one writer, she could sell her work “for whatever price she
wished.”
Her true talent is obvious and her great achievements take on even greater proportions when they
are measured against the era in which she painted.

Il bue:
Mangiare come un bue: mangiare molto, abbondantemente.
Lavorare come un bue: lavorare molto duramente.
Il bue che dice cornuto all’asino: si dice di una persona che rimprovera il prossimo per un difetto che lui stesso
possiede.
Mettere il carro davanti ai buoi : anticipare, decidere una cosa senza avere tutte informaazioni importanti.
Il cane:
Freddo cane: freddo intenso, insopportabile. ( “Ieri mattina in motorino faceva un freddo cane!”)
Essere solo come un cane: essere tremendamente solo, senza amici nè affetti.
Vita da cani: una vita dura, non piacevole, senza nessun divertimento o comodità.
Cani e porci: significa “chiunque”. Questa espressione è negativa e può essere
usata in molte situtazioni. (“ A quella festa c’erano cani e porci.” )
Essere fedele come un cane: essere molto affezionato e leale.
Trattare come un cane / da cani: trattare una persona malamente, in
modo sgarbato.
Essere come cane e gatto: si dice di persone che non vanno d’accordo.
(“Simone e Giulia litigano sempre: sono come cane e gatto!”)
Stare da cani: stare molto male, sia fisicamente che moralmente.
( “Per colpa dell’influenza la scorsa settimana sono stata da cani.”)
Comportarsi da cani: comportarsi male, agire in maniera maleducata.
Non c’è un cane: non c’è nessuno. (“Ieri all’inaugurazione di quella
mostra non c’era un cane.”)
Lavoro fatto da cani: lavoro fatto male.
Essere un cane: non essere bravo in qualcosa. (“Quell’attore è un cane, non sa recitare per niente!”)
Essere un cane sciolto: si dice di qualcuno che non vuole avere legami. Che ama vivere fuori dagli schemi.
(“Roberto è un cane sciolto: ha 42 anni, non è sposato, e gira il mondo con la sua macchina fotografica.”)
Menare il can per l’aia: prendere tempo, perdere tempo.
La capra:
Salvare capra e cavoli: trovare la soluzione a un problema concillando interessi opposti di due persone.
Fare il capro espiatorio: pagare per colpe che sono di altri.
Essere una capra: essere ignorante (in qualcosa). (“Dammi una mano con i conti per favore : in matematica
sono una capra!”).
Il cavallo:
Pazzo come un cavallo: si dice di una persona molto bizzarra e originale.
Cavallona: una donna alta e robusta, poco femminile. Non è un complimento.
Febbre da cavallo: febbre molto alta.
Denti da cavallo: denti particolarmente grossi, simili a quelli del cavallo.
Dose da cavallo: si usa per indicare una quantità molto abbondante di un farmaco.
Essere a cavallo: essere in una situazione o in una posizione favorevole. (“Se finisco il lavoro entro oggi sono a
cavallo.
Cavallo di battaglia: attività in cui una persona si sente più sicura di sè, che è sicura di sapere fare bene. (“Gli
spaghetti alla carbonara sono il mio cavallo di battaglia.”)
Il cervo:
Essere una cerbiatta: si dice di una donna giovane, dal copro agile, con gambe snelle e gli occhi grandi ed
espressivi.
Occhi da cerbiatto: avere uno sguardo dolce e affettuoso.
Facciamo le corna!: vuol dire : “Speriamo bene!”
Il cigno:
Il canto del cigno: è il canto melodioso che, secondo la leggenda, emette il cigno prima di morire. Per questo
si usa anche per indicare l’ultima opera di un artista o di una persona importante.
Avere un collo di cigno: avere un collo lungo e sottile.
La civetta:
Fare la civetta: si dice di una donna vanitosa e frivola, che si mette in mostra per attirare l’attenzione degli
uomini.
Il coccodrillo:
Piangere lacrime di coccodrillo: si dice di un falso rimorso. Questo detto nasce dal fatto che il coccodrillo
femmina – in caso di pericolo – trasporta le uova dei suoi piccoli tenendole tra le proprie fauci (in passato si
pensava che se li mangiasse) e perchè i coccodrilli lacrimano quando muovono le mascelle.
La colomba:
Tubare: questo verbo è usato in modo scherzoso anche in referimento a una
coppia di innamorati che si scambiano tenerezze e parole d’amore.
(“Quei due tubano come colombi!”)
Il coniglio:
Essere un coniglio: essere una persona molto paurosa.
Fare figli come conigli: fare molti figli.
Estrarre il congilio dal cilindro: trovare una soluzione inaspettata.
Il delfino:
Nuotare come un delfino: nuotare molto bene.
Il drago:
Essere un drago: questa espressione gergale vuol dire “essere una persona molto furba, in gamba.”
L’elefante:
Avere una memoria da elefante: avere un’ottima memoria.
Comportarsi, muoversi come un elefante (in un negozio di cristalli): essere molto goffo, non avere tatto,
delicatezza.
Il falco:
Occhi di falco: si dice di una persona con una vista molto acuta.
Piombare come un falco: arrivare improvvisamente, gettarsi un una situazione con rapidità e sorpresa. (“...e
all’inizio del secondo tempo il centravanti è piombato come un falco sulla palla e ha fatto gol.”)
La farfalla:
Essere un farfallone: una persona superficiale e volubile che cambia spesso idee, sentimenti e partner.
Correre dietro alle farfalle: perdere il proprio tempo in cose inutili.
Andare a farfalle: nel calcio indica un giocatore che fa delle azioni a vuoto durante la partita.
Il gallo:
Fare il galletto: si dice di un ragazzo che si sente superiore agli altri, che corteggia le ragazze.
Essere il gallo del pollaio: essere l’unico uomo in mezzo a tante donne.
Il gatto:
Tanto va la gatta al lardo che ci lascia lo zampino: chi vuole appropriarsi delle cose degli altri, prima o poi
viene scoperto.
Quando il gatto non c’è i topi ballano: in riferimento a qualcuno che, nell’assenza di chi lo comanda, ne
approfitta per fare il proprio comodo.
La giraffa:
Collo di giraffa: un collo molto lungo (e per questo non bello). È il contrario in negativo dell’espressione “avere
un collo di cigno.”
Il granchio:
Prendere un granchio: fare un errore. (“Mi sono sbagliato, ho preso un granchio”.)
Sgranchirsi / sgranchirsi le gambe: fare un po’ di movimento fisico. (“Durante un lungo viaggio in aereo è
consigliabile sgranchirsi le gambe passeggiando per il corridoio.” )
Il leone:
Essere, sentirsi un leone: essere, sentirsi pieno di forza ed energia.
Sentirsi come un leone in gabbia: sentirsi irreguieti.
Battersi, combattere come un leone: reagire con grande coraggio.
Essere un cuor di leone: essere molto coraggioso.
Fare la parte del leone: prendere per sè il meglio
o la maggior parte di qualcosa.
Avere un cuore di leone: essere molto generoso con gli altri.
La lumaca:
Essere una lumaca: essere lenti e pigri nei movimento e nel fare le cose.
Andare a passo di lumaca: andare o guidare molto piano.
Essere un lumacone: una persona furba, che cerca di sembrare ingenua e goffa.
Il lupo / la lupa:
Avere una fame di lupi: avere molta fame.
Tempo di lupi: brutto tempo, con pioggia e freddo.
In bocca al lupo!: è un’espressione di buon augurio che si usa quando una persona sta per affrontare una
prova impegnativa (per espemio un esame o un colloquio di lavoro.) Prevede come risposta : “Crepi (il lupo!)”
Il maiale (o porco):
Mangiare come un maiale, una scrofa: Mangiare troppo o in maniera poco educata.
Essere grasso come un maiale: essere molto grasso.
Essere un maiale, un porco: una persona sporca: una persona grazza e ingorda: una persona che fa discorsi o
azioni indecenti, volgari.
Un porcile: un posto molto sporco. (“Questa stanza è un porcile!”)
Porcheria sporcizia, cosa di nessuna qualità (“Raccolgi questa porcheria!”) ; una cosa fatta molto male (“Lo
spettacolo era una porcheria”); cibo o bevande cattivi, preparati male (Il caffè di quel bar è una porcheria.)
Fare una porcheria: un’azione disonesta, sleale.
L’oca:
Essere un’oca, un’ochetta: una donna stupida e sbadata, poco intelligente.
Fare, essere un’oca giuliva: essere una donna dall’aria sciocca e contenta.
Chiudere il becco: stare zitti (“Chiudi il becco! Non sai quel che dici!”)
Tenere il becco chiuso: rimanere zitti.
Non avere il becco di un quattrino: non avere soldi.

L’orso:
Essere un orso / Fare l’orso: Si dice di una persona poco socievole, che preferisce la solitudine. (“Dai Stefano,
non fare l’orso, vieni con noi alla festa!”)
Vendere la pelle dell’orso prima di averlo ucciso: contare su qualcosa che ancora non si ha con certezza.
(“Luigi si è comprato un computer nuovo senza controllare se aveva abbastanza soldi in banca : ha venduto le
pelle dell’orso prima di averlo ucciso!”)
Il pappagallo:
Essere un pappagallo: un uomo che fa i compilmenti alle donne per la strada, disturbandole.
Ripetere, recitare a pappagallo: elencare a memoria, in maniera meccania. (“Il professore non vuole che
impariamo la lezione a pappagallo, senza capire quello che diciamo.”)
Il pavone:
Fare il pavone (o fare la ruota) / pavoneggiarsi : vantarsi troppo delle cose che si hanno o che si fanno, darsi
delle arie.
Farsi bello con le penne del pavone: darsi meriti che in realtà sono di altri e vantarsene.
Essere un pavone: essere una persona vanitosa e superficiale.
La pecora:
Essere la pecora nera: essere diversi dal resto di un gruppo. Si usa in senso negativo. (“Alberto è la pecora nera
della famiglia: l’unico che non ha voglia di lavorare.”)
Essere la pecorella smarrita: avere perso la giusta direzione.
Il pesce:
Essere sano come un pesce: in ottima salute.
Essere muto come un pesce: si dice di una persona affidabile, che rimane in silenzio mantenendo un segreto.
Nuotare come un pesce: nuotare molto bene.
Non sapere che pesci prendere: non sapere cosa fare per risolvere un problema.
Sentirsi un pesce fuor d’acqua: si usa per indicare che si trova a disagio un una situazione o in un ambiente.
Non essere nè carne nè pesce: si dice di una persona o di una cosa che non è ben definita o che non si può
definire.
Fare il pesce in barile: fare finta di nulla, fare l’indifferente.
Buttarsi a pesce su qualcosa: fare le cose con entusiasmo.
Pesci piccoli, pesci grossi: persone di poco conto, persone di grande potere.
Prendere a pesci in faccia: trattare una persona in modo maleducato, villano.
Il ragno:
Ragno porta guadagno: i ragni portano soldi, fortuna. Per scaramanzia dunque, quando si trova un ragno in
casa, si cerca di non ucciderlo.
Non cavare un ragno dal buco: non riuscire a trovare la soluzione anche dopo molti tentativi.
La rana:
Cantare come una rana: essere stonato.
Gonfio come una rana: essere pieno di superbia.
La scimmia:
Essere come una scimmia : essere molto curioso o dispettoso.
Scimmiottare: imitare le mosse degli altri.
Se qualcouno è molto brutto, possiamo dire che è uno scimmione.
Il gorilla è una guardia del corpo, cioè una persona che protegge i personaggi famosi.
Il serpente:
Essere una serpe, una vipera: una persona malvagia e ipocrita.
Allevare una serpe in seno: aiutare qualcuno che poi si rivela essere un ingrato, un nemico, un traditore.
Parenti serpenti : si dice in relazione ai brutti rapporti che spesso ci sono tra i vari parenti all’interno di una
familgia.
La tartaruga:
Essere una tartaruga : essere molto lento.
La tigre:
Essere una tigre di carta: si dice di chi mette paura solo a parole.
Essere feroce come una tigre : essere molto cattivo e aggressivo.
Cavalcare la tigre : intraprendere un’impresa molto difficile, con la speranza di riuscire.
Il toro:
Prendere il toro per le corna: affrontare un problema con decisione.
Tagliare la testa al toro: prendere una decisione che risolve un problema in maniera rapida ed efficace. (“Se la
tua moto si è rotta ti passo a prendere con la macchina e tagliamo la testa al toro.”)
La vacca:
Periodo, tempi di vacche grasse, magre : periodo ricco o di miseria, secondo quanto narrato dalla Bibbia.
Stare/ essere un un ventre di vacca: vivere nel benessere, nella sicurezza, senza preoccuparsi per il futuro.
Andare, finire in vacca: espressione non elegante; finire male, in maniera negativa. (“Quel progetto è andato
in vacca.”)

Spectacular Spettacolo Shows For 2014!
“Time Warp Part 1 and 2” may be finished, but Spectacular Spettacolo will be back in
2014 with the final part of the trilogy (for the final year), “Part 3 – Vacanze Romane”.
These shows are relevant for students Prep – 6 and are from our very popular “Time
Warp” series (more information on our shows including sample songs are available on our
website at www.leaporcaro.com.au/spectacular-spettacolo/).
The shows have been written by Lea and Corrado Porcaro. Corrado has been teaching
Italian for almost 30 years in the Primary sector, as well as having developed many
programs for the Department of Education over the years. Many teachers already use
resources that he has created in their classrooms. Corrado knows the curriculum like the
back of his hand and he has written these shows knowing what teachers (and students) not
only need, but want. This is why we have had 100% positive feedback so far!
Our shows are not only dynamic, fun, engaging, interactive and contain fresh, new, popular
songs relevant for the students of today, they also cover different areas of Italy as well
as topics that relate back to the current curriculum. For example, in “Part 3 – Vacanze
Romane”, our heroine, Claudia, returns to Italy and each place she visits, we have a song
that relates back to what the students are learning. Every booking will also include the
fantastic teachers’ pack which contains over a semester’s worth of material (including loads
of lesson plans with fun ideas on how to introduce the language used throughout the show
either before or after the students have seen it), the lyrics to all the songs sung
throughout the show and a copy of the CD. The pack has also been put together by
Corrado. Feedback from teachers in regards to this pack has been extraordinary!
