I can go a few more weeks without the things I gave up. And I’ve only committed a few sins; maybe I’ll go to confession right before Easter.” If so, it might be a good idea to look at the second reading and the Gospel. St. Paul says that anyone who is overconfident about their lack of sin “should take care not to fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). He compares those people to the ones Moses brought through the desert. In fact, many were punished because they were tempted to follow false gods or to complain about the food and drink God provided them. Could the same thing happen to us? One form of overconfidence rejecting what we learned as children. We may think, “I’m old enough to decide if I should go to church” or “I can take care of myself now; I don’t need God’s help.” If these sound familiar because you have thought that way yourself, Paul has a warning. His analogy of the Rock following the Hebrews in the desert refers to God’s constant presence to the people. In the same way, God is present to us today. But just as God was not pleased with those in the desert, God may not be pleased with us if we continue to ignore the Lord. That brings us to the Gospel. In the parable of the fig tree, the owner is not pleased—the tree has not produced any fruit. Unlike the fig tree, God would be happy with any fruit we produce. We could be generous to the poor, we could fight for the unborn child’s right to life, or we could simply teach our children how to pray. Like the owner of the fig tree, God is patient, but we only have so much time. So when do you plan to bear fruit? Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a prelude. On “Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later, “Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially called “Sunday of Forgiveness.” the church gathers for “Forgiveness Vespers.” The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness. The desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliation in the family and with one’s neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season. How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some traditions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasting is not permitted on the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine and oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunication falls during Great Lent, then fish may be served. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. 6 ST. It’s called “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”. If you look the song up on Youtube, you will see that dozens of artists have covered this song over the years. I think this is a perfect song to reflect upon during Lent. The words are very beautiful and are based off of Hebrews 12:1-2. Some of the lyrics are: Oh soul are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness to see There's a light for a look at the Savior And life more abundant and free His words shall not fail you, He promised Believe Him and all will be well Then go to a world that is dying His perfect salvation to tell Turn your eyes upon Jesus Look full in His wonderful face And the things of Earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace During this Lenten season if you are unsure how to grow closer to God, simply just turn your eyes upon Jesus, and he will guide you. How do you turn your eyes upon him? There are many ways! For instance, you could: come early to Mass and pray beforehand, read through the readings before Mass and reflect on them, attend Stations of the Cross on Fridays here at church, listen to only Christian music in your car during Lent, pray before the blessed sacrament on Tuesdays in the chapel, spend an extra 5 minutes in prayer every day, etc. In the Bible verse in Hebrews, they use the word “fix”. Fix your eyes upon Jesus. What can you do during this Lenten season to fix your eyes upon Jesus?
