Alcalá de Henares is regarded through this guide as an important destination for business events; a bet that complements the wide range of cultural and heritage activities offered by the City of Arts and Letters and that also wants to become the keystone of the city's economic development. Facing the new economic challenges, we have opted to emphasise the exceptional resources that are at our disposal, and exploit the economic side of this cultural city, where singularity makes us unique and supports us in our efforts to generate wealth and employment, as well as to be a Convention City. The manual you are holding in your hands will allow you to discover every detail of Alcalá, its important historical and monumental legacy –declared World Heritage City in 1998 by UNESCO-, and our wide range of hotels and modern infrastructure, transforming thus our city into an ideal place for holding meetings and conferences. From now on, our city opens its doors to you all and offers, through the Municipal Conference Office of Alcalá de Henares (OMCA), the support and help you might need to hold a successful meeting in a modern city, and the singularity of a unique historical environment. Javier Bello Nieto Mayor of Alcalá de Henares 86 Archbishop´s Palace. Catherine of Aragon. Thanks to its location near the capital of Spain and Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez International Airport; its wide range of hotels; its extensive and rich cultural agenda; and its transport infrastructure, whether public or private; Alcalá de Henares is a perfect place for holding all kinds of conferences, meetings and incentive trips. We would like to position Alcalá de Henares as a city of economic development by supporting a sector that fosters a high expenditure per tourist, enhances tourism all year round, and makes the tourist offer profitable; all this along with the common effort and close collaboration with those associations we joined: the Spain Convention Bureau and the Congress-World Heritage Cities Alliance of Spain. This manual allows you to know first-hand the offer of our city, give advice and professional assistance from the Municipal Conference Office of Alcalá de Henares (OMCA), and also allows you to enjoy a unique experience which makes us feel proud of our city: the opportunity to hold your conferences or meetings in exceptional places that are part of a Historical Site, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Do not hesitate any more; holding your conference or meeting in Alcalá is a guarantee of satisfaction and success. Marta Viñuelas Prado Executive Councillor for Tourism COMMUNICATION How to arrive by plane The International Airport of Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez is located about 15km from Alcalá de Henares. Barajas is the most important hub in Spain and the fourth largest airport in Europe. In 2011 49,671,270 millions of passengers used Barajas airport, 429,390 flight operations were carried out and 394,154,078 tons of cargo were transported. In January 2006 the new Terminal 4 was open and increased the number of passenger capacity in 70 million people. Being a spectacular design, Terminal 4 was awarded with the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture and became one of the landmarks of our Community. The proximity of the city with Barajas Airport allows passengers to save time and money when travelling. Another great advantage of Alcalá de Henares is its proximity to the IFEMA Exhibition Centre, located just 20 km from the city. 88 Hippolytus´ House. Fish Mosaic. The spaces and memories of the mosque and the old synagogues, the jewish butcher’s, the shop keepers, the churches, the trades and places that shaped and gave much of its character to a medieval town full of contrasts, was an example of cultural fellowship. Ceramic plaques are placed at the most relevant places of medieval Alcalá. A cross, a seven branched lampstand or a half moon appears on them, depending on which one of the three quarters they are placed at. There are also three main plaques, marking the limits of each quarter and the location of the remaining plaques. The Muslim Quarter Main Plaque, Bernardas Square, Archaeological Museum. - Mosque, Santiago Street. - Almanxara, San Bernardo Street, Archaeological Museum. - Old Market, crossing between Diego de Torres and Santiago Streets. - Muslim Quarter wicket, Diego de Torres Street, in front of Madre de Dios street. Jewish Quarter Main Plaque, Mayor Street, in front of Imagen Street. - Major Synagogue, Corral de la Sinagoga alley, facing Mayor Street. – Minor Synagogue, Santiago Street. – Jewish butcher’s, crossing between Cervantes and Mayor Streets. – Shops and houses at Cambio Corner, Mayor Street, in front of Santos Niños Square. 100 Christian Quarter Main Plaque, Santos Niños Square, near Calle Mayor. – Cathedral of St Justus and St Pastor. – The Town Council and the Tercia/St Lucy Hermitage, Tercia Street. – Studium generale, Travesia de Seises Street. – The Brothel, Damas street. – Archbishop’s Jail, Vicario Street. – Santa María la Rica medieval hospital, Santa María la Rica Street. – Pillory Square, Santos Niños Square. - Fortress/Archbishop’s Palace, Fountain Tower, Palacio Square. – Walled enclosure, Sandoval y Rojas Street. The City of Literature Thanks to Alcalá de Henares’s cultural relevance and its university tradition our history is full of writers. Some of them were born here, some others discovered and described our city, and many became famous. This signposting guides us through the places connected with them at Alcalá. The City of the Storks Historical and natural heritage are closely linked in Alcalá’s landscape. The historical buildings’ rooftops are a natural settlement area for the white stork. This favours a tourist route merging both elements, thus creating a new way to discover the city. Don Juan Tenorio and Don Juan’s Nights at Alcalá Open air performance of the immortal romantic play from José Zorrilla around All Saints’ Day. According to the tradition, two performances are made, usually on October, the 31st and November, the 1st, coinciding with the All Saints’ Day celebrations. Don Juan Tenorio at Alcalá was proclaimed a festivity of Regional Tourist Interest in 2002. As a complement for those performances, every November, the Council of Tourism of Alcalá organises dramatized visits: “Las Noches de Don Juan en Alcalá” (Don Juan’s Nights at Alcalá), a theatrical tour through Alcalá’s Old Town, including discounts and special offers in some of the restaurants and hotels of the city. For additional information and reservations, please contact our Tourist Offices.* Women’s History of Alcalá International Women’s Day is annually held on March 8, and Alcalá’s City Council proposes a dramatized tour that merges the relevant role of women in the history of the city and the opportunity of visiting the landmarks of its old town. All along the course, the group will be guided by an actress wearing historical clothes. Itinerary: Don Quixote’s Women, Antezana and Oidor chapels/The Universes of Cervantes Interpretation Centre. - University and women. María Isidra de Guzmán, San Diego Square. – Literature: Saint Teresa of Jesus, Antezana Hospital inner courtyard. – A queen born in Alcalá: Catherine of Aragon, Bernardas Square. – The Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus, their first interview, Palacio Square. *Further information at www.turismoalcala.es and at the Tourist Information Offices (0034 91 889 26 94 / 0034 91 881 06 34) 101 ART AND CULTURE SHOW ROOMS Interpretation Centre “Los Universos de Cervantes” Oidor Hall, Antezana Hall and Temporary Exhibition Hall Plaza de Cervantes, s/n 91 877 19 30 / 91 877 32 53 Contemporary Loft Plaza de San Lucas, s/n 91 877 32 53 The Meeting House Calle San Juan, 4 91 887 05 84 Quinta de Cervantes Concejalía de Educación Calle Navarro y Ledesma, 1-3 91 887 12 30 Old Hospital of Santa María la Rica Calle Santa María la Rica, 3 91 877 19 30/91 877 32 53 102 I.
