A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBI
ANGELS ON THE PATH
T
his year, as many of you know, I took
on a big goal, thanks to my daughter:
freeing 100 slaves.
In the last few months, I have found
amazing amounts of support and help, often
from unexpected sources. Let me share just a
few examples with you.
• One month after I set my goal, three oneday conferences on human trafficking were
announced in the New York/New Jersey
area. I was able to attend two personally and
CBI members involved in our Social Action
Committee attended the third. (Two CBI
members were featured in an article about
that conference in the local press.) The Social
Action Committee stepped in quickly and
wholeheartedly to fight human trafficking
around the Superbowl. CBI member
Dan Dank shared with me his daughter’s
remarkable work on human trafficking.
• Just as I realized that I would need to find
new ways to reach to out more people in
order to reach my goal, I got an email from
the Jewish Standard asking me to write a
regular column. My first two columns have
been on the subject of freeing slaves.
• A lovely woman from an Orthodox
organization called and asked me for help
in organizing a women’s group. Since we
were complete strangers to one another,
it struck me as odd that she chose a
Conservative rabbi, of all people, to ask for
this favor. But there was something so sweet
and heartfelt in her approach that I agreed
to help. It was she who told me about the
Baer Family, the folks who spoke at CBI
on April 4 about their work rescuing and
educating former child slaves in Ghana. I
was a complete stranger to the Baers when
I called them, and they agreed right away to
come and speak at CBI.
• I was so touched by Kevin Bales’ books
Disposable People, The Slave Next Door,
and Ending Slavery that I sought an
introduction to the non-profit he started:
Free the Slaves. As it happens, Rabbi
Rachel Troster, daughter-in-law of CBI
members Susan and Marty Pelavin,
chairs the Rabbinical Assembly Social
Action Committee on which I serve. She
graciously gave me an introduction to
the Executive Director of Free the Slaves,
Maurice Middleton.
• Maurice, too, was most generous. The
15-minute phone appointment we scheduled
stretched to almost an hour, because he
was so open to my ideas and referrals. I
was able to put Maurice in touch with Evan
Robbins, who was a guest speaker, together
with the Baer family, at CBI. It turns out
that both Free the Slaves (freetheslaves.
net), Maurice’s organization, and Breaking
the Chain Through Education (btcte.org),
Evan’s organization, rescue children from
enslavement by fishermen on Lake Volta in
Ghana. They are eager to get to know one
another and find ways to collaborate.
• I found a wonderful and under-utilized
website, jchoice.org, which enables Jews
to donate to a variety of Jewish and nonsectarian causes, as Jews, and to set up
pages to promote charities about which
they are particularly passionate. When I
called the number listed on the website, it
was not working. I dug deeper on the site,
found a number that differed by one digit,
and reached a wrong number – the Jewish
Federation of Boston. The woman who
answered the phone happened to know
the Director of Jchoice, Josh Troderman,
and, surprisingly, gave me his personal cell
phone number! I called, and he spent 40
minutes with me on the phone explaining
the website, and then apologized because he
had to go. He was on a deadline.
I launched a group within the site called
Jews Freeing Slaves to provide support for
outstanding organizations that are working
to rescue slaves and end slavery. Of course, to
do that, I needed some more help, so I called
Josh back. He was again amazingly helpful
and wildly generous.
In our second phone call, I realized that I
know Josh’s mother. She was one of the first
people to support my work on the Lifecyles
book series with a grant. I was also able to

helly’s grandfather looked at me: “you’re a
real nice guy, Lenny,” he said, “but I’d never
let you work in my store. The customers would
be too scared to come in.” It was visiting day at
Camp Kinderwelt. Shelly was a counselor; I was
the music and drama specialist. Her parents
and grandparents came for a visit (her mom
had been a camper there 40 years earlier).
Fast forward a few months as a 1963 Chevy
Impala with colored stripes painted on its
side pulls up and parks directly in front of the
Kaplan home in Hillside, New Jersey.
Shelly’s mom, Elsa, looked at me and her
eye began to twitch. That twitch didn’t go away
for more than a year. She wanted me to park
the car around the corner so that none of her
friends would see it in front of their house. I
drank too much milk so I was asked to bring
my own whenever I came over (soda too) and
she couldn’t understand why I would go to the
refrigerator without asking permission.
It took her best friends months trying to
convince her that, despite my appearance, I was
a really nice guy; she didn’t buy it. We never got
along very well, and my relationship with my
in-laws was rocky at best.
Born in Brooklyn, Elsa grew up in Newark.
She was tall, an exceptional athlete, she drove
like a man, never got lost and always got her
way even after she was married; she was ‘The
Director.’
Many years before her husband died in
1992, Elsa read a piece in The Jewish News that
read: “Why move to Miami when you have a
grandson in West Orange!” I couldn’t believe
my eyes. “If you move to West Orange,” I told
them. “You’ll have a grandson in Cincinnati.”
They didn’t care and they bought a house five
minutes down the hill from us.
It was great for Wayne who spent almost
every Friday night with his Nana and Popi.
They would eat, play and laugh until Elsa’s
TV shows came on and then he had to sit in
the den quietly watching TV until we came to
pick him up or he went to sleep; Wayne had a
wonderfully close relationship with them.
Our relationship with Elsa became infinitely
more difficult as she became ill with dementia
and her life was sitting in front of the television
all day and screaming at us for coming over.
It became more and more difficult as the
harangues caused by the disease drove us away.
We got the call that she’d stopped breathing
and rushed to the apartment but it was too late.
I stood there emotionless and said goodbye.
I sat in Shul the next morning saying
Kaddish for my mother and I began to weep. I
realized that I had to beg her forgiveness for the
way I treated her, no matter the situation.
Everybody deals with his own demons in his
own way, and the fact that I didn’t understand
her personal “stuff ” was no excuse for my lack
of empathy for her and the world she lived in.
Our grandchildren were given the gift of
five great grandparents. They’ve lost three since
September and with those losses went our
connections to the world of our ancestors.

Shalom Chaverim,
This year we enjoyed a chocolate seder in preparation for Pasach.
The students were also busy collecting Tzedakah money for several
charities including Zichrom Menachem, Birthday Angels, Israel
Environmental Protection Society and are currently working on
the Read to Feed program.
Our Hebrew School has a new teacher, Aliza Neuer. We are
fortunate that she was able to join us so late in the school year.

Aliza Neuer-Engel is a native of Montreal , Canada who moved to New York in 1997. Before that, she lived for a period of three years in
Israel, studying and serving in the I.D.F. Having studied Judaic Studies and Community and Public Affairs, Aliza spent her first years in NY
working in the Jewish community non-profit arena. Switching gears to raise her two boys for a time, upon her family’s move to Bergen County
6 years ago, Aliza entered the teaching profession. Aliza is passionate about teaching, about Judaism, education and can’t help it that she loves
the kids too! Together with her husband Jeff, Aliza waits all week for Shabbat to spend special time with her boys Gershon and Ori.

Are you getting the idea yet? Not only
did people help and support me, they blessed
me. And occasionally, very easily, almost
effortlessly, I was able to bless them. We also
came to one another at just the right time.
Sometimes, when you find just the
mitzvah that you are meant to be doing, life
is like that. Synchronicities and even miracles
happen. The anointing is palpable.
The Talmud says: “Bederech she’adam
holech molichin oto - a person is directed
in the way he should go.” Literally, the
phrase can be translated: In the way that
a person goes, they lead him. The ancient
rabbis ponder: Who is this mysterious “they”
who lead us? And they answer with a pun:
“Molichin oto, malachim ito. ‘They lead him’
really means ‘there are angels (divine and
human messengers) with him.’”
I don’t know if my daughter and I will be
able to free 100 slaves this year. But this I do
know: there are angels with us on our path.

The success of the Mishloach Manot program does not happen without the
help and support of our amazing CBI community. We ponder what should
be included, we order goodies, we schlep and pack, we pack and schlep, we
order for friends and family, we donate, we collect money, we input numbers
into the computer, we output cards with lots of names, we nosh, we kibbitz,
we bond, we make things look attractive, we deliver bags, we mail packages,
we raise lots of money for CBI programming, we raise lots of money for
charity and we put lots of smiles on lots of faces. We do mitzvot. We are
more when we do more. To all who participated in the 2014 Mishloach
Manot fundraiser, thank you.

SISTERS IN THE HOOD
S
isterhood enjoyed a busy month this April and March. We had a
wonderful Progressive Dinner which was also sponsored by Men’s Club.
We enjoyed getting together with old and new friends, enjoying wonderful
dinners and indulging in decadent desserts. Thank you to all those who
attended as guests, prepared and cooked meals, and to our wonderful Men’s
Club shoppers.
Also in late March was an event for One Book One Community. Our
own Lisa Pollack and Carolyn Ginsberg organized a discussion led by Rabbi
Orenstein on the history of the events depicted in the book By Fire By Water
by Mitchell James Kaplan. They even prepared delicious Sephardic desserts
to be enjoyed after the discussion.
We will continue to plan Movie Night events! Look for announcements
about a night out to enjoy a movie and coffee. Some of us were able to go to
see the Israeli film Hunting Elephants in April which was part of the Israeli
film Festival in Bergen County.
Look for news about our annual Paid Up Sisterhood Luncheon, and
our annual Sisterhood HighTea which will be taking place in June. All are
welcome!

We want to thank Sheila Weber for hosting April’s book club.
It was a fun night discussing Life after Life. We are next meeting on Tuesday,
May 20 at the home of Lori Yoselow. We are reading the Orphan Master’s Son
by Adam Johnson. It deals with intertwined themes of propaganda, identity
and state power in North Korea. The novel was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer
Prize for fiction. If you are interested in attending, contact Lisa Pollack at

Lots to report this month, so let’s get to it.
We’re happy to inform you that there were no shootings, knifings or
brawls at Poker Night this time, though one player was admonished for
double dipping his Tostito in the medium salsa. It seems we just can’t avoid
mayhem with this reckless bunch.
Our Mother’s Day plant sale is ongoing and there’s still time to place your
order! This is a great opportunity to select from a wide variety of flats, hangers and potted plants - both flowers and veggies - at a deep discount while
supporting the Men’s Club and CBI! Grab our flyer/order form from the shul
or CBI website and make sure we receive it with your payment by May 6.
Pickup for all orders is Sunday, May 11, 9:30AM - 12:30PM, the perfect time
for spring planting and just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day!
Bring the family to our Lag B’Omer Picnic on Sunday, May 18 and enjoy
a great barbecue at Beachwood Park in Hillsdale. There will be plenty of
food, games and tuchus kicking as we give the folks from Temple Beth Sholom what-for in softball!
Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 8 when we’ll be celebrating Father’s
Day a week early with a fun family outing to see the Jersey Jackals play Quebec at Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair. (Note: Not Yogi Bear Stadium in Jellystone!) We have discount tickets for an entire section of box seats reserved,
and all ice cream sundaes will be 1/2 off! Stay after the game to photograph
your kids with the players and enjoy seeing them run the bases!

T
he month of May starts with our Generation Z Casual Shabbat
service Friday, May 2, at 7:30 pm, when our Hebrew School
students and graduates will help to lead the prayers set to tunes by
today’s stars. We will also learn some Gen Z Israeli music and hear from
a guest speaker on Israel, in anticipation of Yom Ha’atzma’ut (Israel
Independence Day).The following morning, May 3, the Aleph Class will
help lead the Shabbat morning service at 10:00 am. Sunday morning’s
Bagel Breakfast, May 4, will include some special Israeli treats as we
celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut.
Friday, May 9, at 7:00 pm, families with children of all ages are invited
to join us for a time-and-space-travel Family Trip to Israel. We will return
from our virtual trip by 7:45 pm, so those with early bedtimes can get
home with a Shabbat goody bag and families with older kids can stay for
the 8 pm erev Shabbat service and oneg (see details elsewhere in The
Menorah).
Please join us and support our B’nai Mitzvah families on the following
May Shabbatot: the Aisenman family for Steffani’s Bat Mitzvah on
Saturday, May 10 at 9:30 am and the Maron family for Danielle’s Bat
Mitzvah on Saturday, May 17 at 9:30 am. Steffani and Danielle will also
be leading Sunday morning services (May 4 and May 11) and Friday night
services (May 9 and May 16).

On Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 am, concurrent with Danielle’s Bat
Mitzvah, join Judy Schoenfeld and Audrey Bida for a Young Families
Shabbat service for children ages seven and under and their families. May
birthdays will be celebrated and lunch will follow. To make sure there’s
enough food (and appropriate birthday gifts), please RSVP to the CBI

A
pril saw the return of the famous Congregation B’nai Israel Road
Rally. I had heard a lot about it, but I think the last one was held
before Linda and I became members of CBI 16 years ago. This Ways
and Means fundraiser was put together by Susan and Marty Casper and
Naomi Weinberg and it was a night filled with a lot of fun. We started at
the synagogue with a poem that lead us to the first location. We had to
figure it out, find the next clue and then head off to the next location. At
some of the stops we had to have our pictures taken with funny hats and
Groucho glasses (that must have been to get even with me). We ended up
back at the synagogue for dessert and shared stories and laughs with our
fellow “Rally’ers”. Susan, Marty and Naomi deserve congratulations for
all their hard work and effort in the creation of the clues, the selection of
locations and for providing us with a wonderful evening. Hopefully, this
will become a regular event again and that many more members
will participate.
As usual, we have a lot of events going on in May before the warm
weather and the Summer slow down. On Friday, May 2nd we have our
second annual Generation Z Casual Shabbat, with the participation of
our Hebrew School children, and the Focus on Israel Committee will
bring in a speaker for Yom Ha’atzma’ut. On the 4th they will be providing
an Israeli Breakfast which will also help give us strength for the Interfaith
Blood Drive sponsored by the Social Action Committee. The Men’s Club
will be having their annual Plant Sale on May 11th and the Lag B’Omer
Picnic on Sunday the 18th. Please look in the Menorah and Shul Shmooz
for more information on these and other events.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at our many special events
and services.

of course comradery. Find out more at the

K-S SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE TO
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Application Deadline is May 15th

The K-S Scholarship Foundation, administered by Congregation B’nai
Israel, will again award a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student in 2014.
The scholarship will be made to a Jewish high school senior, from either the
Pascack Valley area or surrounding communities, who meets certain
eligibility requirements that include demonstrating academic achievement
and financial need.
Applications must presently be high school seniors who graduated CBI’s
Hebrew School, attend the Bergen County High School for Jewish Studies,
and/or reside in Emerson, Westwood, Washington Township, Hillsdale,
Closter, River Vale, Harrington Park, Norwood, Upper Saddle River,Oradell,
or Woodcliff Lake.
To obtain an application, contact the temple’s administrator at
201-265-2272 or office@bisrael.com. Applications must be submitted
by May 15th.
The Recipient will be notified on or about May 31, 2014

kids!) are invited to join us for a time-andspace-travel Family Trip to Israel. The month
of May includes both Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel
Independence Day) and Yom Yerushalayim
(Jerusalem Reunification Day). Board an “El
Al jet”, get a stamp on your passport, and
come with family and community to the Holy
Land. We will visit some of the most famous
sights, and even meet a few heroes from
the Jewish homeland, returning to CBI by
7:45 pm, so those with early bedtimes can
get home with a Shabbat goody bag and
families with older kids can stay for the 8
pm erev Shabbat service and oneg.
Tuesday, June 3, at 7:30 pm, we
will again be inviting our entire CBI
community, as well as friends from local
area Churches, to an inter-faith learning
session and conversation about the
holiday of Shavuot (commonly called
Pentecost by Christians). Shavuot is
the holiday that commemorates the
giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. This
is sometimes referred to as revelation
(God communicating a message) or
theophany (God appearing to people
and creating a direct experience of
the Divine). According to the ancient
Rabbis, revelation was NOT a one-time
event. We continue to hear from God
in countless ways -- through Torah
study, prayer, dreams, intuitions, books
we read, people we meet, etc. Can
revelation or theophany be deliberately
cultivated? How can we hear from and
experience the Divine and the Holy on
Shavuot -- and every day?
If you have been part of any Adult
Ed spiritual conversations, interfaith
dialogue, or Shavuot celebrations
-- and if you haven’t -- please join
us for an evening that is sure to
be meaningful and enjoyable. As
is customary, we will conclude the
night with dairy foods, cheesecake
included!

PASSOVER WORKSHOP
Congregational B’nai Israel Hebrew
School students attend varied programs
as part of CBI’s annual Passover
workshop to celebrate the Passover
holiday and appreciate the story of the
Exodus of the Jewish people. Students
attended a “Chocolate Seder” where
chocolate items were substituted for
the traditional ones (ie. chocolate milk
instead of wine or grape juice) and also
retold the Passover story in other ways
that included reading, “Let My People
Go” with their teacher.
ROAD RALLY
Chocolate Seder
FLERUSY, a local United Synagogue Youth group, enjoyed a pre-Passover
celebration that included a “Chocolate Seder” at Congregation B’nai Israel
in Emerson. After the temple’s rabbi, Debra Orenstein, reflected on the
Passover experience, teens read from a special Haggadah to retell the Jewish
people’s Exodus from Egypt and substituted chocolate items for traditional
ones. For example, the Chocolate Seder included substitutions of chocolaty
items for traditional ones, like chocolate milk instead of wine or grape juice,
and dipping strawberries in chocolate syrup instead of dipping parsley into
salt water. This USY Chapter is a collaboration of teens from Temple Israel
(Ridgewood), Temple Beth Shalom (Fair Lawn), The Fair Lawn Jewish Center,
and Congregation B’nai Israel (Emerson). ROAD RALLY RESULTS ARE IN!
Seven teams set out on a quest
Not traveling too far or too wide,
To complete the return of our road rally
Through some towns where members reside.
They solved several clues
Sang a song and bought some stuff,
Ended up in wrong places
Some clues were just too tough.
Some pictures were taken
And puzzles decoded,
Poems were written about their adventures
While everyone remained devoted.
At the end of the night all cars returned
Proof of completed tasks evaluated,
We laughed so hard while poems were presented
As we listened so intently and fascinated.
We learned about some spouses battling
And a creepy psychic met,
Heard about funny glasses and hats
And a pen that was used as a threat.
Prizes were awarded
To those that rallied,
Who wrote the best poem
Or had the least mileage tallied.
We thank all who came
And lasted the night

Hi, my name is Steffani Aisenman, and I am becoming a Bat Mitzvah
on May 10th, 2014. I am very excited to take on the job of becoming a
Jewish adult. The name of my Torah portion is B’Har, which means “On
Top of the Mountain.” My Torah portion explains that every seven years,
there shall be a sabbatical year, and every 50 years (after seven sabbatical
years) there shall be a jubilee year. On the sabbatical year, the land and
the people are given time to rest. Anyone who has been in debt will be
forgiven and will not have to pay anything back. It is believed that you
should not hold back from lending others money in the 6th year, even
though you know you may not get it back. It is a mitzvah to open up your
heart and hand to someone who needs a loan and also to trust God to
help you have enough.
For my mitzvah project, I am donating to Charity Music, Inc. (charitymusic.org), located near Detroit, Michigan. Charity Music’s mission is to
“help cultivate the next upcoming crop of young artists by providing
musical instruments, on loan, to individuals wishing to explore their
hidden musical talents.” This organization collects gently used sheet music
(for any and all instruments) and gives them to kids who are in need and
do not have the chance to purchase or take lessons. Also, instruments in
any condition can be donated. (Charity Music will refurbish any instruments.) The donation box will be in the lobby of Congregation B’nai Israel,
Emerson, NJ. I hope you all have something to contribute to my collection!
I happily look forward to seeing everyone on my special day. I hope
that you will also join me on Sunday, May 4th and Friday, May 9th when
I will be leading services.
Hi, CBI members. My name is Dani Maron. My Bat Mitzvah will be
on May 17th. I will be leading services on Sunday, May 11, Friday, May
16, and Saturday, May 17. You are invited to join me and celebrate this
milestone in my life!
My Torah portion is Bechukotai. My portion talks about good and
bad consequences that follow if you do good deeds and keep the laws, or
if you fail to do so. It includes a discussion of tithes, gifts to the Temple
of 10% of your income. The goal is to give the first or best part of what
you have to the Temple, and never your worst. When I think of giving my
best, it makes me realize that I don’t want to be lazy. The Torah is telling
us to be, do, and give the best we can. Our bad choices and bad work will
come back to us and so will our good ones.
My Mitzvah project is donating art supplies – including drawing pads,
colored pencils, crayons, and markers, paints, and brushes – to mothers
and children at Shelter Our Sisters, a group that provides a safe home
for women who have been abused, along with their children. This will
help women and children starting a new life to be creative and express
themselves. Will you please donate unopened art supplies? You will find a
collection bin in the lobby of B’nai Israel. I hope that you will be able to
help with this cause.
