Featured Artist - White Room Show
A BLAST FROM THE PAST
Unique Matchbook Cover Art by Roger Shule to be
featured at Antioch Fine Arts Foundation Gallery.
Are you old enough to remember using matches to start a fire for a
camp fire, burning the trash, lighting a candle, or lighting a cigarette?
Most of the matchbooks came from the businesses
we dealt with every day. From cigars to health products and hotels to taverns, matchbooks were the
medium used to spread the word about products
and services. Many were collected as souvenirs of
vacations and trips. Until the
1980’s, they were the main source
for fire starting. With the advent
of the instant lighter and the anti
smoking campaign the use of
matches and matchbooks was on the decline.
Many of these matchbooks were little works of art
as artist Roger Shule emphasizes in his upcoming
White Room exhibit.
Most of his paintings are of vintage 30’s and 40’s
matchbook covers but there are a couple of contemporary designs as well as a few made up
matchbook cover designs.
Take the time to come and see these little blasts of
the past art works that take us back to another time
and slower pace of life.
The exhibit will be in the gallery from March 17
through the end of April. Opening reception is
“I wonder whether Art has a higher function than to make me feel, appreciate and enjoy natural objects for
their art value?”
Bernard Berenson
What We’re Up To
Michael Brown's entries in the International Garden
Photographer of the Year Competition made it through the
last round of judging. His entry in the "Trees" category is a
Finalist, and Michael's Portfolio entry was Commended.
Finalist images will be the 2011 exhibition, due to open at
the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England, opening on
May 14th 2011.
A book, which will include all finalist, commended, and
highly commended photograph(s) will be published to
coincide with the opening of the exhibition in May.
TREES AND THEIR SHADOWS FROM ABOVE
This show will include a number of new original
paintings, small bronze sculptures, tapestries, as
well as large and small framed prints for purchase.
The Trail marker Tree Exhibit will be shown on the
upper leve. A 24-inch maquette of the 8-foot
Bronze George Wellingrton “Cap” Streeter Sculpture
will be featured at this show. The high relief Bronze
of Saint Valentin will also be on display.
Each year Mr. Downes has contributed part of the
proceeds from this annual show directly back to the
Grove Redfield Center to help continue its preservation. As part of the event, a small Original
Landscape Painting, in one of the Artist’s handmade
frames, will be raffled off during the show. Tickets
will be available all four days and the drawing will
be Sunday Afternoon.
