PJCC Celebrates Local Artists in
Community Art Show
By Kimberly Gordon, Cultural Arts Director
T
he award-winning PJCC Art Gallery
is once again honored to feature the
amazing works of 70 Bay Area artists in our
second Community Art Show. At a recent
reception, many of the artists gathered
at the PJCC to enjoy live jazz, wine, and
refreshments, but mostly to admire each
other’s talents. Outside, the temperature
may have been cool, but indoors, the
atmosphere was undeniably warm.
“It was wonderful to observe the artists
and their families reacting to their works
on display,” reflected art show committee
member Rachel Kardos. “I’m very proud
of how this show came together.”
Foster City Councilmember Herb
Perez announced the category award
winners, including Marvin Wax, who
took 1st Place in Photography with Prayer,
(shown at right). Wax wasn’t present to
accept his award, but when notified by
phone, he said, “I had faith in this photo.”
His comment was befitting the portrait
of a man deep in prayer at the Western
Wall. “I’ve been at this (photography) for
some time,” he continued. “I knew it was a
special moment.”
We invite you to enjoy these beautiful
works of art (also available for purchase)
on display through December 18.

ecuperating from any type of
operation can range from mild discomfort
to extreme pain. Dmitry Yudin should
know. In 2004, back surgery did little to
relieve the throbbing ache of a slipped
disk. Last year, Dmitry again went under
the knife when he tore the anterior
cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
In both instances, prescribed physical
therapy did little to aid his recuperation.
And in both instances, the PJCC Pilates
instructor developed his own successful
form of rehabilitation.
“I learned Pilates, which helps
strengthen muscles, especially in the
body’s core,” he explains. “This, in turn,
helps support back muscles.” After his
knee surgery, the Belarus (Eastern Europe)
native added water therapy because he
knew it was a popular form of conditioning
and injury rehabilitation among athletes.
The combination of water therapy
and Pilates proved to be so successful
for his recovery that Dmitry was inspired
to introduce a similar rehabilitation and
conditioning program at the PJCC. His
“Pilates and Water Training” class and
personal training roles are worlds removed
from the desk job he once knew as a
computer programmer, but that’s fine with
Dmitry, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in
Physical Education and Sports Medicine.
Fitness is his passion.
His reason is simple, and succinct.
“Helping others heal is far more
rewarding.”

Hanukkah
H olidays
December 9 – 16, 2012 • 25 Kislev – 3 Tevet, 5773
Also known as “The Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the
Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by foreign forces. After looking everywhere for
oil, a small flask was found, however it contained only enough oil to light the menorah
(the temple lamp) for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight. Today Jews
remember this miracle by lighting candles in a menorah every night for eight nights.
Tu B’Shevat

15 Shevat, 5773
Also known as the
New Year for Trees, this
holiday was originally
celebrated to calculate
the age of fruit trees
in order to tithe their
crop, as instructed in
the Torah. While the first
three years of fruit were
forbidden to be used,
the fourth year’s crop
was to be brought and
offered to the temple in
Jerusalem.

Purim is one of the most joyous and fun
holidays on the Jewish calendar. We
are commanded to eat, drink and be
merry, in order to commemorate a
time when the Jewish people living in
Persia were saved by Queen Esther from
extermination by Haman, an evil advisor to
the King. The primary commandment related to Purim is to
hear the reading of the book of Esther, commonly known as
the Megillah, which means scroll. It is customary to boo, hiss,
stamp feet and rattle gragers (noisemakers) whenever the
name of Haman is mentioned during the reading. Children
are encouraged to dress in costume to portray the characters
in this triumphant story: King Ahashverus, Queen Esther,
Mordecai and the evil Haman himself.
Visiting Scholar-in-Residence
Rabbi Naomi Levy
he North Peninsula Jewish Community is honored to welcome
a unique and passionate voice in the contemporary Jewish world,
Rabbi Naomi Levy. A graduate of Cornell University, Rabbi Levy
is the author of the national bestseller To Begin Again, as well as
Talking to God and Hope Will Find You. Renowned for her common
themes of finding faith, strength and hope during challenging
times, the popular speaker has appeared on Oprah and NBC’s
The Today Show, as well as in magazines such as People, Parade,
Redbook, Newsweek, and SELF.
“The rabbinic and lay leadership of the North Peninsula
Jewish Community are thrilled that Rabbi Levy will serve as our
2
Purim
third annual, communal scholar-in-residence,” says Rabbi Lavey
Derby, PJCC Director of Jewish Life. “She’ll be guiding us on an
exploration of personal and spiritual growth.”
Rabbi Levy is the founder and leader of Nashuva (Hebrew for
“we will return”), a Jewish spiritual outreach movement in Los
Angeles. Her weekly Shabbat services draw capacity crowds of
more than 300 people. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to
hear the speaker Newsweek magazine calls “one of the 50 most
influential rabbis in the nation.”

PJCC 2012 annual report
TRANSFORMING LIVES,
CREATING COMMUNITY
By MICHAEL BERMAN, President,
PJCC Board of Directors
I am deeply grateful for your
participation in our Center. Your
generous philanthropic support makes
it possible for us to transform lives
every day, building a lasting spirit of
community.
The past year was eventful and exciting,
as you can see throughout this annual
report. In March, our Beatles-themed
annual benefit & concert became one
of our most successful galas ever,
raising more than $250,000 for PJCC
programs and services. We also
received word of a second competitive
grant award from the New Freedom
Fund. The multi-year grant extends the
Fund’s support for our vital Get Up &
Go senior transportation program into
2015.
Planning for the future was a hallmark
of recent efforts. Months of challenging
negotiations between the North
Peninsula Jewish Campus and the City
of Foster City resulted in a landmark
win-win agreement. The Campus
now owns the 12-acre site housing
the PJCC and neighboring Ronald C.
Wornick Jewish Day School, enabling
both institutions to plan securely
for the needs of a diverse, growing,
and changing community. I strongly
encourage you to contact our Executive
Director, Deborah Pinsky, to learn more
about the exceptional legacy that will
be created by the land purchase and
the related fundraising campaign now
in its early stages.
The land purchase is a crucial
step toward leaving a vibrant and
strong PJCC for our children and
grandchildren. A second step is our
Circle of Life legacy gift program,
launched last year. I thank our initial
legacy gift donors (through June 2012)
who are listed on the following pages,
for their early vision and leadership. If
you, too, have included the PJCC in your
will or estate plan, please let us know so
we can recognize you as a Circle of Life
member.
Looking ahead, two exciting new
initiatives are in their early stages.
wellness your way helps each of us
take well-being to the next level. I hope
you will join me in determining your
own “personal wellness formula” to
become healthier than ever.
Do Justice: Fighting Hunger revolves
around the core Jewish tenet and PJCC
Guiding Principle of Tikkun Olam
(repairing the world). People of all
ages will join together in building and
tending an organic garden at the PJCC,
and using the harvested produce to
help feed the hungry at local shelters. Thank you, one and all, for making the
PJCC such a wonderful, growing part of
our community.
With deep appreciation,
Michael Berman

THE Center for COMMUNITY
Our community celebrated Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)
by donating hundreds of hours to PJCC service projects,
including Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest Food Bank,
and One Warm Coat.
Hundreds of non-driving and disabled seniors took thousands of
rides to the doctor, the grocery store, and more through our Get
Up & Go escorted transportation program. This invaluable PJCC
service is vitally important for seniors to keep living at home.
The arts came alive for more than 5,000 adults who visited our
PJCC art gallery, and enjoyed our Up Close Concerts, theater
productions, and other compelling arts and culture events.
FORMING LIVES, CREATING COMMUNITY

THE FAMILY DESTINATION
THE Center for WELLNESS
980 campers and teen counselors-in-training developed social
skills, learned the importance of giving back, and made friends and
memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
Teen athletes participating in the JCC Maccabi Games made
new Jewish bonds and friendships, through the Olympics-type
experience with other Jewish athletes from around the world.
88 children received $167,000 in financial assistance to attend
preschool and camp, helping them take advantage of the PJCC’s
exceptional educational and personal development opportunities.
A new Developmental Consultant, generously supported by “Funda-Need” donations, worked throughout our preschool, camp and
after school programs to help teachers and parents create optimal
learning environments and adapt efforts to children’s unique
learning styles.
More than 2,000 community members learned how to stay
well at a variety of Kaiser Permanente co-sponsored events,
including our hugely popular Family Health and Fitness Day.
We were awarded a 7th consecutive annual prize from “Bay
Area Parent Magazine,” recognized as Best of the Best for
Swim Classes. We also received the magazine’s first ever Best
Place to Swim distinction, a tribute to our efforts to welcome
swimmers of all ages, abilities, and experience levels.

A New Voice
By Rabbi Lavey Derby, Director of Jewish Life
FourNo,rabbis
walk in to the PJCC …
it’s not the opening of a bad Jewish
joke but the embodiment of a powerful
and important value that permeates
throughout Jewish Life programs.
On the eve of the most recent Rabbis
Roundtable, four rabbis walked into
the PJCC with a shared purpose: to
study a Jewish text together and share
their own personal beliefs about God,
Judaism and the meaning of life. Sharing
their dialogue was an audience of 125
guests from different denominations
and backgrounds, believers and nonbelievers, Jews and non-Jews.
This was a celebration of diversity
that also had one underlying single and
powerful message: when it comes to
learning about Judaism, no one (not
even the rabbi) owns the whole truth or
the right answer. We all have something
to contribute to a greater understanding
of what it means to be Jewish.
What was equally moving was
watching the four rabbis, of different ages,
questioning each other and themselves,
expressing doubts, and admitting to
not knowing all the answers. Together
they demonstrated that Judaism is an
open-ended conversation that will reveal
meaning to us if we allow ourselves to
participate honestly and authentically.
We hope that you will join the
conversation.
