Sometimes the gift fills a specific need, other times it is a creation that serves to uplift all who view it, Tim and Colby Flynn, father and son, from Northern Virginia, giving a Kinston Indians jersey employees and to the Foundation for the use in raising money to patients alike. put back into our community. New recumbent elliptical machines donated by the little bank for the Minges Wellness Center. Shown “christening” the new equipment is Scott Newton with Margaret Smith looking on, from the Vernon Avenue branch of the little bank. The gifts of artwork Wellness Garden (cover) and Heart Trees (inside front cover) fall into this category. We thank the Queen Street United Methodist Church and Connecting the Dots staff leadership for donating these series of original art to Lenoir Memorial. The Wellness Garden is found in the hallway leading to the Emergency Department, and Heart Trees is displayed in the waiting area for Rehab Services. If you are considering making a special gift to Lenoir Memorial, please contact Dirk Griffith, foundation director, by calling 252-5227262 or emailing dgriffith@lenoir.org. Harold Jones, donor and volunteer, dedicating the sculpture he calls Helping Hands commemorating all volunteers and memorializing his wife, Norma. Norma was a longtime hospital volunteer. Programs, Projects, and Services During calendar year 2010 the Lenoir Memorial Foundation provided over $18,000 to Lenoir Memorial Hospital for health initiatives and programs that emphasized improving the health and well-being of our community. This provided funding for the following: • Four community blood pressure machines which recorded 37,848 blood pressure screenings. These machines are located at the Vernon Park Mall, the Minges Wellness Center, the LMH lobby, and one travels among area churches. (The blood pressure machines are contracted for and calibrated as part of this arrangement.) • Scholarships to assist individuals with exercise programming in the Minges Wellness Center. • Support for the New Year Health Challenge led by a registered dietitian with nutrition topics addressed over four January sessions. Participants received a free food diary. • 2500 hand sanitizers during H1N1 Influenza Pandemic to all visitors coming into hospital. • 1500 individual self-management health guides that accompanied a community campaign titled “Know Your Numbers.” • 500 Asthma Quick Reference Guides through the Lenoir County Asthma Coalition to Lenoir County Public Schools elementary classroom teachers and Lenoir-Greene Partnership for Children Day Care Sites. • Support for activities of the Ladies Breast Cancer Support Group and Compassionate Friends. Programs, Projects, and Services publication that provides health-related education and information to more than 30,000 residents of Lenoir County and parts of Jones and Greene Counties. • The Foundation also sponsored three major fundraising programs in an effort to increase awareness and raise funds for the community initiatives it supports. They include our annual Superball Golf Tournament at the Kinston Country Club, a Holiday Benefit Reception at The Bentley, and a LMH Employee Campaign. • Pedometers for the Diabetes Wellness Program for the 10,000 Life Steps exercise program. • The regular programming feature of “Sit and Strengthen” exercise video on TACC-9 cable television for the chair-bound home audience. • Provided early detection screening events for breast, prostate, colorectal and skin cancer screenings. • Scholarship support was provided for a nursing student. • In addition to these programs and initiatives, the Foundation partnered with the Hospital to ensure that “Foundation News” was a part of Medlines, a Chris Jones, seated, right, presents sixth Cindy Alphin Jones Memorial Scholarship to April Philyaw, seated left, a graduate student in the ECU School of Nursing. Standing, l-r, are Lenoir Memorial Foundation director, Brenda Canup, Jared Jones, second from left, and Ryan Jones, right, twin sons of Cindy and Chris; and Gary Alphin, Cindy’s brother. 2010 Holiday Benefit Reception at The Bentley Locally, it’s a given, that the official start of the Holiday Season is the night the Lenoir Memorial Foundation hosts its party at The Bentley. Friends of the Hospital turn out in their finest for an evening of celebration in a setting fit for royalty. This annual event is held the first Thursday following Thanksgiving and has become a fixture of the Kinston social scene for supporters of Lenoir Memorial. We thank owner Linda McConnell for doing a wonderful job creating the perfect festive backdrop for our party and, most of all, we thank our donors for their support! 2010 Golf Tournament In May, the Foundation held its twelfth annual golf outing at the Kinston Country Club. The goal as always is to show golfers a good time and to raise support for community healthcare programs and services. Mission accomplished, thanks to our generous sponsors! We thank the six platinum, seven gold, eight silver, and three pewter sponsors, as well as our fifteen hole-sponsors and individual donors. Without them this important fundraising event wouldn’t be as successful. Twenty-three foursomes competed for first and second place, with Halifax Linen Service of Roanoke Rapids claiming the number one spot and taking home a cash prize in addition to their black and gold Lenox trophies. Prizes were awarded to the second place winners, the longest and straightest drives as well as closest to the pin. Prizes included cash and premium golf clubs. A five hundred dollar cash prize went to the winner of the putt-off competition. Foursomes included many players fielded by vendors and major suppliers to Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Golfers are treated to a goody-bag and a complimentary buffet lunch, to fuel up for their afternoon on the links. Volunteers from the hospital staff ensure that everything is ready to roll at the teetime and throughout the players’ time out on the course. By day’s end, it might be stretching it to say that playing a round of Charles (left) and Preston golf improves your health – McElheney of Halifax Linens take unless you walk the course first place honors. Not shown, but – but it’s certainly fair to also in the foursome were Rick say that for the last dozen Etheridge and Conley Blankenship. years it’s been good for the health of our community. The S che c h t er S o c i e t y starting the Lenoir Memorial Foundation, serving as the board chairman for 20 years, raising funds for a cause he loved, she was canvassing neighborhoods, going door-to-door, visiting businesses, asking for gifts for a variety of causes – including the hospital. Together, through their outreach, their philanthropy, and engaging others, they helped transform Kinston and Lenoir County into a better place to live. Pearl Schechter and the late Sol Schechter If Sol Schechter were still living, he and his wife Pearl would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in September. As it was, he died in 2006, at 89, six years shy of that mark. Still, they were married for sixty-four years. And every day of those sixty-four years Sol told Pearl that he loved her, sometimes putting it in question form, “Have I told you today how much I love you?” Their philanthropy alone merits special recognition. But Sol’s willingness and natural ability to lead left an indelible mark on the community as well, especially with healthcare. He served first as chairman of the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees before transitioning to become chairman of the new Lenoir Memorial Hospital Foundation. Combined, Sol’s commitment to the Hospital spanned 42 years. It was during his tenure as Foundation chair that he also helped to found the Kinston Community Health Center, again serving as chair. Pearl sums it up well when she says that “If Sol had owned his own hospital, he couldn’t have worked harder.” It is the twin legacies of philanthropy and leadership that guided our choice when we sought a name for our planned-giving society. Sol and Pearl Schechter epitomize the maxim that it is better to give than to receive. Pearl’s hope is that by lending their name to this important purpose, that others may be encouraged to give, to place the Lenoir Memorial Foundation in their will. “If Sol had owned his own hospital he couldn’t have worked harder.” For sixty-four years they were partners. When he drove, she navigated. When he was growing the business, she raised their son. And when he was If you would like to be recognized as a member of The Schechter Society, please contact Dirk Griffith, Director, Lenoir Memorial Foundation at 252-522-7262. Most of us don’t have a legend for a sibling, but Frank Peele does. His sister, Nancy Peele, was not a household name across America, or even North Carolina. There’s no question, however, that she was a legend at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Lenoir Memorial was her oyster and was for nearly fifty years. When she died in 2009, her colleagues and friends Nancy Peele created the Nancy Peele Memorial Scholarship. Her family joined her colleagues in funding the scholarship. Everyone, it seems, wanted to keep Nancy’s legacy alive. Nancy worked at Lenoir Memorial for forty-seven years, beginning in Radiology, transferring later to the Laboratory. The year before her death she was inducted into the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Hall of Honor. If the members of her family hadn’t known how beloved Nancy was, they witnessed it during her illness. Frank was struck by the devotion Nancy’s colleagues showed, especially during her last weeks in the hospital. He remembers the visits of two to five colleagues daily, all of whom had driven the fifty-mile round trip from Kinston after their workday. Frank and his wife, Louise, contribute annually to the Peele Scholarship to ensure that it continues to grow. They have taken an extra step, though, to make certain that there will always be scholarships awarded even when they are no longer alive: they have each placed a provision in their will, to the Lenoir Memorial Foundation, that directs a percentage of their estate to the Nancy Peele Memorial Scholarship. We welcome Frank and Louise Peele as inaugural members to The Schechter Society and thank them for helping keep a legend alive!
