news CENTRE WPSH weekly newsletter of West Parry Sound Health Centre We’re looking for enthusiastic senior volunteers August 12 to 18 • 2013 We’re looking for enthusiastic senior volunteers. The New Horizons for Seniors Project is looking for senior volunteers to run exercise sessions in various locations in and around Parry Sound: Parry Sound, Rosseau, McDougall/Nobel, and Carling. Volunteers will attend a training session on September 6 with the Rehab staff so they can confidently lead the exercise classes two to three times a week for 1.5-hour sessions, starting in September. Training will be held September 6 in the Rehabilitation Department at WPSHC from 8 a.m. to noon. Please contact: Kristen Millett kmillett@wpshc.com or call 705.746.4540 ext. 1302 Fit testing for N95 respirators (masks) must be completed every two years. Check the August Education Calendar for an upcoming fit testing date. We’re improving on our commitment to privacy with a change in the way we gather and store paper for shredding. Five of these locked shredding collection consoles are being placed in nursing areas of the health centre. Volunteers will be emptying the consoles and putting the paper in locked totes. Staff are reminded that these consoles should not be used to collect paper intended for recycling. We can limit our shredding costs by using the system appropriately. weekly newsletter of West Parry Sound Health Centre Cultural Lunch & Learn this Thursday As part of our ongoing cultural education and awareness, members of the First Nations Healing Room Steering Committee and West Parry Sound Health Centre staff are presenting a First Nation Lunch & Learn session on August 15 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Healing Room at WPSHC. There are countless examples across the province of health system partners like you who put patients in the centre of the circle of care and focus on quality and safety. To celebrate organizations and individuals who demonstrate performance excellence, I am pleased to announce the inaugural Minister’s Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety. This annual competitive recognition program will recognize: • Collaboration between care providers who provide patient care across the care continuum. • Sustainable results. • A strong emphasis on measurable outcomes. • An awareness of promoting system value for quality. Local Health Integration Networks are taking the lead in promoting and coordinating this initiative. Teams and individuals need to complete their applications and send them to their Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) office by September 16. Subsequently, a representative selection committee will review and score all applications and make recommendations on successful recipients. The successful applicants will be awarded their medal at Health Quality Transformation 2013, an annual event hosted by Health Quality Ontario, on November 21, 2013. This is also a wonderful opportunity for the winners to not only provide an example but also serve as a resource for the entire sector in driving quality efforts across the system. I expect that the successful programs will be profiled through various ministry opportunities and communications, as well as in other featured events and publications. To find out more about the Minister’s Medal, visit our website at: Ontario.ca/leadinghealthychange. Sincerely, Deb Matthews Minister of Health and Long-term Care New acute stroke care protocol A standardized order set to optimize care All patient care staff in the acute settings (ER, ICU, Acute, OB-Acute) need to familiarize themselves with this new protocol.
