Alex Needleman for being the 2013 Team Fund-raising Award recipients in
the EMS/PAD (Public Access Defibrillator) Challenge during the recent Becel

News from our
Human Resources
Department
Benefit update
The Human Resources department is pleased
to announce a fantastic change to your extended
health benefits.
Effective September 1 you are now able to
submit for reimbursement treatments and/or
services ordered by a nurse practitioner. Please
note that our coverage has not changed, rather
those treatments/services (such as medical
aides, massage, etc.) that were always eligible
for reimbursement if ordered by a physician are
now also eligible for reimbursement if ordered
by a nurse practitioner.

If you have any questions or concerns please
contact the Human Resources Department.
Seeking enthusiastic
senior volunteers

Make sure safety is on
the agenda at every
department meeting
Managers and supervisors should address health and safety issues
at their regular department meetings. This is beyond the monthly
JHSC inspections.
Health and safety should always be on the agenda.
We’re looking for enthusiastic senior
volunteers. The New Horizons for Seniors
Project is looking for senior volunteers to run
exercise sessions in various locations in and
around Parry Sound: Parry Sound, Rosseau,
McDougall/Nobel, and Carling.
Volunteers will attend a training session
on September 6 with the Rehab staff so they
can confidently lead the exercise classes two
to three times a week for 1.5-hour sessions,
starting in September.
Training will be held September 6 in the
Rehabilitation Department at WPSHC.

N95 respirator
fit testing is a
provincial ministry
requirement
The Ministry of Labour requires
that fit testing is completed for
N95 respirators (masks) every two
years.
Has it been two years since
your last fit test? Has your weight
changed? Have you never been
fit tested? If you answer yes, then
you should be scheduling an
appointment.
Check the August Education
Calendar for upcoming fit testing
dates.
Review the new
acute stroke care
protocol
All patient care staff in the acute
settings (ER, ICU, Acute, OB-Acute)
need to familiarize themselves
with this new protocol. Please
visit the information board near
Hava Java to learn about this new
protocol and provide feedback.
To prepare for September
implementation, the information
board will be on display until
August 31.
Report reviews progress on LHIN strategic plan
An excerpt from the summer blog by NE LHIN CEO Louise Paquette... ... In my blog last summer, I asked
you to help us build a [strategic] plan.
And I was so impressed with how many
of you responded. In fact, some 4,000
Northerners told us what was missing,
what they valued, and how they want
health care partners to get better at
working together! This past February,
we shared the final plan and its four
priorities.
Six months has now passed, and I am
pleased to share our first progress report
with you – just like the good old days
when I would run home from school
eager to share my report card. Our
interim report card provides you with
updates on our actions that are helping
us meet our plan’s four priority goals:
• increase access to primary care,
• improve transitions of care,
particularly for our frail elderly as they
move from hospital back to community
or home,
• make mental health and addiction
services more accessible, and
• ensure special population groups such
as Francophones and First Nations
are receiving linguistic and culturally
appropriate care.
While there is still a lot of work to do,
I think that once you read the report,
you will agree that we are on the right
track. And just because we have a plan,
doesn’t mean we’ve stopped listening.
A few weeks ago several of my staff
met with 60 seniors in Parry Sound
at a Lunch and Learn. They talked
about some of their challenges they
have accessing care, and about some
of the things that are working well.
For instance, they talked about the
amazing care received from the staff at
Belvedere Heights’ Community Support
Services -- “the angel in the wings”....

Anyone boating past Sans Souci’s Deerhorn Lodge in the Chantler
era will be familiar with Dave Chantler’s hand-carved character channel
markers gracing the waters — Seagull and Osprey. The pair is being
auctioned in a sealed bid auction with proceeds split between the West
Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation and Toronto General Hospital
(Cardiac Care). The birds will go to the highest bidder as a pair. Reserve
bid is $5,000.
Visit the Foundation office for complete
auction details and see a schedule for where
the markers will be on display

Concert promoter and Foundation
supporter Joe Bamford brought legendary
performer and Order of Canada Member
Bobby Curtola into the health centre last
Thursday afternoon. Curtola mingled with
patients, staff, and visitors, sang a few
songs, and told stories about his life and
career.
“I’ll be singing for all of you tonight,” he
said, just hours before his fund-raising
performance at the Charles W. Stockey
Centre.
