Third Sunday in Lent
Welcome to the Northeastern Presbyterian Church! We thank God for this time together! We
pray that the grace of God will heal your hurts; that the strength of God will give you courage to
face the week before you; that the power of God will prepare your way; and that the peace of God
will keep you secure and steady in Christ Jesus.

One:
People:
My Lord, what a morning! You have raised up a mighty nation and a
mighty people.
And we are strong, proud, and yours.
My Lord, what a morning! You have brought us through the dips and
hollows, up and down the streets, over the hills and mountains and
through the valleys.
And we are strong, proud, brave and yours.
My Lord, this morning, we have come to celebrate you, to affirm
ourselves as images of you in all your glory and to say "Yes, Lord, we
are strong, proud, brave, and yours in every way." We count it all joy!
**Hymn
#3, SOZ
“We’re Marching to Zion”
Prayer of Confession
One:
The Scriptures call us to turn from sinful ways and return to God, who offers
mercy and pardon. Trusting in that mercy, let us call upon God
who is near.
Holy God, we confess that we have grown complacent in our response
to you. You set before us a rich feast of blessings, but we are drawn to
lesser things that cannot satisfy. You call us to attend to urgent needs in
the world, but we indulge our own desires. Our ways are not your ways;
our thoughts do not ascend to your thoughts.
All:
Forgive us when we fall short of your claim upon our lives. Disturb our
complacency and quicken our desire for a more fruitful life. Be patient,
we pray, as we amend who we are, in the hope of becoming who you
intend us to be. We ask this in the name of our Savior, your Son, Jesus
Christ. Amen.
God’s Good News
One:
God’s love is sure and steadfast, always providing a way out, a way
through, a way back to God.
Many:
Through the waters of baptism, we have died with Christ and are raised
with him. With gratitude, in faith, we will walk the way of Christ.

*Prayer of Dedication
God of the wilderness and Promised Land, in the days of want and in days of plenty
you have been with us. By these gifts we now share, may others know of your
providence and care. Send us – not only our offerings, but our very selves – to
console and comfort, to lift up and reach out, to listen and sit beside your children
everywhere at the one Table you have set; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Anthem “My Soul is A Witness for My Lord” – Phillip McIntyre The Celestial Choir
Prayer for Illumination
We seek you in your word, O God, as though we are searching for water in a dry and
weary land. By the power of your Holy Spirit, may this word be to us a rich feast,
satisfying the soul. Then with our mouths, we will praise you; and with our lives,
we will bless you, our Host and our Hope. Amen.

ATTENTION: AS PART OF A SERIES OF GATHERINGS sponsored by Presbyterian Men
organizations in the National Capital Presbytery (NCP) area, Northeastern men are hosting a
Prayer Breakfast and Gathering on Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The
event will include Devotion and a meal, followed by a presentation and discussion about “The
Phenomenon of Homelessness” led by Michael L. Ferrell, Executive Director of Coalition for
the Homeless, Washington, DC. Many people have their own opinion as to why homelessness
exists, but the fact is many homeless people
work. Growing shortages of affordable housing, less secure jobs with fewer benefits are just a
couple of the issues contributing to homelessness. Gain further insight into the phenomenon of
homelessness and why it is so intractable in our community and throughout the nation. Come,
have a great meal and join in the dialogue that makes NCP men’s meetings so illuminating and
enjoyable.
TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY: We are studying the Book of Acts on Tuesday
mornings. This book is the first written history of the Christian church. The life of the early
church is recorded: introduction to the beginning of the church, the church in Jerusalem, the
church scattered into Palestine and Syria and the church advancing to the end of the earth.
Please join us.
INTERPRETATION AND STEWARDSHIP (GGC): As Stewards in God's Kingdom, we are
open to giving and receiving the gifts of spirit. This includes supporting the "Mission" of
Northeastern. When we give we may be of service by sharing our TIME, TALENT AND
TREASURE. With gratitude and an open attitude, we see that life is filled with the gifts
we give and receive.

Richard Smallwood (1948 - )
Richard Smallwood was born in Atlanta Georgia. A world-class
composer, pianist and arranger graduated cum laude from
Howard University with degrees in both vocal performance and
piano. His gifts were stirred up early in life. At age five, he was
playing piano by ear, at seven, began formal training, and at
eleven, formed his first gospel group. Richard Smallwood is
attributed with many gospel 'firsts'. He was a member of the first gospel group on
Howard's campus, The Celestials. They were also the first gospel group to appear at
Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition, Richard was one of the founding
members of Howard's first gospel choir, and The Richard Smallwood Singers were the
first black gospel group to go to the Soviet Union.
Richard Smallwood has been honored by the Smithsonian Institution as a "gospel
innovator and songwriter," and his hometown, Washington, D.C. heralded two separate
occasions as "Richard Smallwood Day," also, distinguishing him with the Mayoral Art
Award for "precision and excellence in artistic discipline." Smallwood's gift has made
room for him to minister to presidents and dignitaries at all of D.C.'s halls of fame,
including the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center and the White House. Richard and his
singers toured with a theatrical musical, "Sing Mahalia Sing" starring Jennifer Holiday,
which segued into a guest appearance on television's "Ryan's Hope" for ABC.
Richard began his recording career in the late seventies with an album simply titled,
The Richard Smallwood Singers. The debut project spent 87 weeks on Billboard's
Gospel chart. The next project, Psalms received a Grammy nomination. Two years later,
another nomination for Textures, the album that contained the classic, "The Center Of
My Joy" penned by Richard Smallwood along with Bill and Gloria Gaither. The group
continued to amass successive Grammy nominations with the following projects,
Vision, Testimony and Live at Howard University.
Richard received a Grammy Award and Dove Award for his production of the Quincy
Jones' gospel project, Handel's Soulful Messiah.
Richard's music has never been confined to any one artistic genre. His song, "I Love the
Lord" crossed onto the big screen when Whitney Houston sang it in the film, The
Preacher's Wife. The same song was also used in the tune, "Dear God" by R&B artists,
BoyzIIMen on their CD titled, Evolution.
Richard, with his group Vision, have recorded three projects for Verity records,
"Adoration", "Rejoice" and the newest entitled "Healing...Live in Detroit." Bound to be
another hit in the gospel music arena, the song "Healing" is a stirring ballad that
ministers to people encouraging the discouraged; God heals not only the body but also
the soul of man. "Faith" is a joyous hip-hop song; the Bible says we are not given a spirt
of fear but of peace, love and a sound mind. We can move mountains with faith just the
size of a mustard seed. "Holy Thou Art God" is a modern day anthem.
Phillip B. McIntyre (1951 - 1991)
Phillip McIntyre was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. He came to the Washington area as
a young man to attend Catholic University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in
music and a master's degree in organ performance. He did additional postgraduate
study at the University of the District of Columbia and Westminster Choir College in
Princeton, N.J. Mr. McIntyre taught music and humanities in the D.C. public schools
from 1975 to 1980 and was on the faculty at UDC from 1987 to 1990.
Mr. McIntyre served the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Richmond, the Church of Our
Savior in Washington and Metropolitan AME Church in Washington. As an organist
and choral director, he served the Grace Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Lincoln
Temple Congregational Church of Christ in Washington, Virginia Union University,
and Hampton University. He was on the executive board of the D.C. chapter of the
American Guild of Organists. In 1981 Mr. McIntyre was guest conductor at the
Kennedy Center's annual Messiah Sing-Along with the Paul Hill Choral and the
National Symphony Orchestra.
His musical compositions included works for organ, vocal solo and chorus. He had
played in organ recitals at the Washington Cathedral, the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception, St. John's Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square, the Church of
the Epiphany and Ascension and St. Agnes Church in Washington and Chevy Chase
Presbyterian Church.
