Thank you! Thank you! Three weeks ago I asked you to help us close the gap on our Sunday collections because we were forecasting a $47,000 shortfall. As I type, we have collected close to $40,000. It is hard to give an exact number because many of your gifts were increases in your regular Sunday offerings. Thus, we have to work with averages. However, we can safely say almost $40,000 has come in to help us close the gap. You are so good! On Wednesday I went for a prayer hike with about a dozen or so of our youths. A number of non-youths asked when they will get a chance for a prayer hike with me. While not a prayer hike, I am going to be offering a ferry cruise to San Francisco and lunch at Pier 39 on July 28th. We will leave St Dom’s at 9:30AM and get back around 5PM. More information will be coming in the next week or two, but please mark your calendars if this event interests you. God bless you, Fr. Each year, Bishop Jaime Soto extends an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation to practicing, adult Catholics of the Diocese of Sacramento, who have received religious instruction, but for various reasons were never confirmed. The next celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at St. Mary's Church in Vacaville. This opportunity is presented for those informed, adult Catholics, who practice their faith in the parish community. Because it is appropriate that each parish offer formation for those who wish to be confirmed, classes will begin in late September. For further information, please contact Deacon Errol Kissinger at (707) 335-4674 or ekissinget@stdombenicia.org. Classes will convene for six consecutive Sundays beginning September 25th and end October 30th, 2016. Classes will be held 2:00-3:30PM in the Mary Magdalene Room of the Ministry Center. Please Note: These readings do not match the readings we are using this weekend at St. Dominic’s, but rather the regularly scheduled readings for Ordinary Time. Isaiah 66:10-14c Ps 66:1-7, 16, 20 Galatians 6:14-18 Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 The Christian call of collaboration In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus tells his disciples to ask the "Master" (God the Father) of the "harvest" (conversion to Christ) to send out more "laborers" (evangelizers). And in the next breath, he tells them that they are the laborers and that they must get busy: "Go on your way," he says. When you think of evangelizers in the Catholic Church, who comes to mind first? Most of us think of priests, and we all know that we need more priests. New vocations in Western societies are still way too few to compensate for the elderly ones who are retiring and dying. “Go on your way” Do you pray for an increase of vocations? Good, but that's only part of what Jesus is asking us to do. "Go on your way," he says to all of us, "and use your gifts, your talents, and your skills to assist in the harvest. Jesus has always been collaborative. The number of laborers for the mission of the Church will only be sufficient when we all join the effort -- clergy, religious, and laity -- working together with our separate and unique talents and skills, humbly assisting each other as members of the same team. To reach this sufficiency, many of us have to overcome the "someone else will take care of it" attitude. And some have to overcome the desire for perfection, the "I can take care of it better myself" attitude, which robs others of the opportunity to serve. Many of us need to overcome the fear of losing control, the "I must tell others how to do their job" attitude, which chases away some very talented laborers. Jesus said we should carry no supplies into ministry; in other words: We should accept whatever is offered to us. Our prayers for an increase of consecrated vocations are answered from within collaborative ministry. Clergy and religious are called to be good role models, which will attract new vocations, but the laity are called to serve God with the same zeal and holiness that we expect from priests, because out of families who serve come the holy priests and religious who serve. Questions for Personal Reflection: Which ministries in your parish and diocese are lacking sufficient laborers? If you're not already busy in the work of God's kingdom, how can you use your talents to help there? If you're already serving enthusiastically, how can you encourage others to get involved? Questions for Family & Community Faith Sharing: Name some of the attitudes and obstacles that block the spirit of collaboration. How can these be overcome? What will you do to improve the conditions of the mission field so that more people will get involved? 2016 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com. Printed by permission.
