Rivera, an 18-year-old, was sitting on his bicycle on the corner of Hyde Park Boulevard and La Brea Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. Jan. 21, 2014. Rivera was then approached by an unidentified person, who shot him in the chest several times before leaving the scene eastbound on Hyde Park Avenue. “The motive for the crime is unknown,” states the staff report signed by Inglewood Chief of Police Mark Fronterotta. “While the Inglewood Police Department continues its efforts to locate and apprehend the perpetrator(s), the investigation has been unsuccessful in identifying and prosecuting the person(s) responsible for this tragic homicide.” Police responded to a radio call regarding a shooting victim at 4:01 p.m. and found Rivera still alive. The teenager was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 4:38 p.m. Witness statements indicate that suspect approached the victim from behind before shooting him in the chest. “In an effort to foster communication with members of the community that may have information regarding this homicide case, the Police Department is requesting that the City Council adopt the attached resolution…,” states the staff report. “By offering a monetary reward investigators hope that individuals with information will be encouraged to come forward.” The police department plans to use asset forfeiture funds to cover the amount of the reward if, and when, information is provided. “Offering a monetary reward to encourage individuals to provide information leading to the arrest of criminals is commonly used as part of investigative strategy,” states the staff report. “In absence of strong physical evidence or leads as to the identity of suspects, this strategy may assist police investigators. By providing this additional resource investigators will be assisted in their ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.” Persons with any additional information regarding the shooting of Rivera are encouraged to contact the Inglewood Police Department at (310) 412-5240. Individuals seeking to remain anonymous may submit a tip by calling 1-800-222-8477. Council Approves Purchase Agreement With Industrial Safety Shoe Company The Inglewood City Council approved a two-year blanket agreement, with the option for an additional year, with Industrial Safety Shoe Company for the yearly purchase of safety shoes. This agreement, not to cost more than $24,000 from the general fund, is in agreement with the city’s Memorandum of Understanding for general employees and will provide steel-toe shoes to an estimated 200 employees. “The shoes are purchased on an as-needed basis and satisfy CAL OSHA requirements,” states the staff report signed by Human Resources Director Jose O. Cortes. “Generally employees receive two pairs annually.” Through the approval of this agreement city staff will save time in developing another specific bid document and its specifications. Management is also avoiding the development of an RFP, the evaluation of responses and having to select a qualified vendor. Inglewood Municipal Code Section 2-198.1, Subsection 5 allow the city to dispense the competitive bidding process “when entering an agreement with another municipal agency that has accomplished competitive bidding process,” states the staff report. “In this case, the City of Long Beach completed a competitive bid (Contract Number 33535), selected Industrial Safety Shoe Company and entered a two (2) year agreement in October of 2014, in one-year increments.” The shoes will benefit employees with jobs described as putting them at risk of “foot injury (e.g., those who work in and around heavy equipment, as well as hazardous equipment, such as shovels, picks, jackhammers, power saws, etc.),” concludes the staff report. The planet, which is about 1,200 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lyra, is approximately 40 percent larger than Earth. At that size, Kepler-62f is within the range of planets that are likely to be rocky and possibly could have oceans, said Aomawa Shields, the study’s lead author and a National Science Foundation astronomy and astrophysics postdoctoral fellow in UCLA’s department of physics and astronomy. NASA’s Kepler mission discovered the planetary system that includes Kepler-62f in 2013, and it identified Kepler-62f as the outermost of five planets orbiting a star that is smaller and cooler than the sun. But the mission didn’t produce information about Kepler-62f’s composition or atmosphere or the shape of its orbit. Shields collaborated on the study with astronomers Rory Barnes, Eric Agol, Benjamin Charnay, Cecilia Bitz and Victoria Meadows, all of the University of Washington, where Shields earned her doctorate. To determine whether the planet could sustain life, the team came up with possible scenarios about what its atmosphere might be like and what the shape of its orbit might be. “We found there are multiple atmospheric compositions that allow it to be warm enough to have surface liquid water,” Shields said. “This makes it a strong candidate for a habitable planet.” On Earth, carbon dioxide makes up 0.04 percent of the atmosphere. Because Kepler62f is much farther away from its star than Earth is from the Sun, it would need to have dramatically more carbon dioxide to be warm enough to maintain liquid water on its surface. The team ran computer simulations based on Kepler-62f having: An atmosphere that ranges in thickness from the same as Earth’s all the way up to 12 times thicker. Various concentrations of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, ranging from the same amount as is in the Earth’s atmosphere up to 2,500 times that level. Several different possible orbital paths. Shields said that for the planet to be habitable throughout its entire year, it would require an atmosphere that is three to five times thicker than Earth’s and composed entirely of carbon dioxide. (This would be analogous to replacing every molecule in Earth’s atmosphere with carbon dioxide, which means that the planet would have 2,500 times more carbon dioxide than we have. “But if it doesn’t have a mechanism to generate lots of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere to keep temperatures warm, and all it had was an Earth-like amount of carbon dioxide, certain orbital configurations could allow Kepler-62f’s surface temperatures to temporarily get above freezing during a portion of its year,” she said. “And this might help melt ice sheets formed at other times in the planet’s orbit.” The research is published online in the journal Astrobiology. Shields earned a master’s degree in acting from UCLA and worked as an actor. In January 2015, she founded Rising Stargirls, a program that teaches middle school-aged girls of color about astronomy and astrobiology using theater, writing and visual art. Teachers can request a free copy of the Rising Stargirls discussion guide and activity book through the program’s website www.risingstargirls.org. • Follow Us on Twitter @heraldpub Page 4 June 9, 2016 Hawthorne Math & Science Academy Seniors Earn Gates Millennium Scholarship By Cristian Vasquez Working hard is nothing new for Hawthorne Math & Science Academy seniors Johann Webb and Isaac Gorgy: 4.0 GPAs, Advanced Placement courses and volunteering for various activities are just some of the accolades on their high school record. Recently added to that list are recipients of the Gates Millennium Scholarship. “I wasn’t expecting to get it at all; I had a certain percent chance that I wasn’t going to get this scholarship,” Gorgy said. “There are so many people that applied, so why would they chose me? It is hard to describe but it was something that I never imagine getting it.” Funded through a $1.6 billion donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the GMS was awarded to 1,000 high school seniors throughout the United States. The scholarship, which aims to promote “academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential” funds the undergraduate, graduate and even Ph.D education of the recipients. The demanding application process was something that Gorgy and Webb expected but admit that applying for this scholarship was unlike applying for any other scholarship. “It [GMS] was not something that was unknown to us but our counselor, Ms. Bui, brought it to us and said that we should really apply,” Webb said. “She mentioned how they really stressed volunteering so we had to make sure to prepare for that, as well as the eight essays that they required: there were eight essays and I had probably written that many applying to colleges.” With the help of their counselor Julia Bui, the two young academics went step-by-step through the application process, multiple times, ensuring that no detail was missed while simultaneously encouraging the two seniors to keep pushing forward. “Before speaking to Ms. Bui I didn’t think this scholarship was something tangible for people like us, but she stressed it, she gave us the prompts and vetted us through it,” said Gorgy. “It was definitely overwhelming. Looking at the prompt you realize how much they require of you and at one time I did think it was too much and that I probably wouldn’t get it but I had so many people supporting me that I kept me going.” After submitting the application in January both students went on with other senior-year activities, including applying for additional scholarships for financial assistance. It wasn’t until March that they learned they had been selected as finalist to receive the scholarship. “That is when I thought I really had a chance at this and that I could be set for life,” Webb said. In April the two busy teens received the package that would change their lives in the mail. “I was at home and I don’t remember if I had a good or bad day but I had a really bad headache,” Webb, who is planning to attend UC San Diego to major in engineering, said. “I was lying down in bed and was trying to go to sleep but my sister was bugging me. She then said ‘some mail from the gates millennial scholarship came’ to which I said okay but she told me it was a package. At that point my headache started to go away.” Both students were spending time and energy applying for other scholarships but now that’s over. “I was walking home from school. My parents saw the envelope and didn’t want to open it so they left it for me on the table to see when I walked in,” Gorgy, who will attend UCLA to major in Biology, said. “I think they had a feeling what it was since it was a fancy and very professional envelope. Opening it was the ultimate ecstasy. It was a feeling you can’t describe. I thought I would scream at the top of my lungs but I was speechless.” In addition to the financial amenities, the scholarship connects the students to a community of scholars so that they do not just become college students going through the motions. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice To Property Owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Check out the “kitten cam” in our nursery at http:// explore.org/live-cams/player/kitten-rescue-cam. Fern is an affectionate kitten with soft gray fur and white mitten paws and chest. Found and rescued from under a shed when she was about four weeks old, Fern’s foster parents have cleaned, cared, and socialized her and her kitten brother, David Meowie. Fern and David keep each other company and play away the day together and have been trained to sleep through the night. Both are being trained to scratch on a sisal scratch post instead of furniture. Fern’s calm spirit balances out David’s playfulness. Fern watches the world with her big beautiful eyes and enjoys following her human companions around the home and being cuddled. David Meowie is a sweet, playful kitten with lovely black stripes and white mitten paws. David keeps his kitten claws in check on a sisal scratch post. Ever since he was first rescued, David has been quick to curl up in people’s laps and purr away. His foster family’s six and nine-year old nephew and niece can attest to the fact that David is an enjoyable playmate. He loves people and would love to get to know you too! Noodles was living on the street with his litter mates and mom. Luckily, the whole litter was rescued. Noodles is a friendly and gentle fluffy tuxedo kitten. He loves to play and is happiest playing with his brother Oodles. Noodles has a calm demeanor when he’s relaxing, but like any kitten has a ton of energy and will be adopted out with his brother, Oodles. They spend their whole day playing, snuggling and grooming each other! Noodles is good with the children he’s met so far and is excellent with other cats! Shorty is a playful boy who has a special move where he will just flop down on the floor when you’re about to pick him up. He’ll roll over for some belly rubs and once you pick him up, he’ll let you carry him like a baby. This sweet boy will come greet you at the door when you arrive home. He loves to carry little stuffed animals around in his mouth and chase toys that you throw across the floor. He loves his brother Stumper and would like to find a home together with him. Shorty was born to a stray cat and taken into a foster home as a kitten together with his brother, after their sister unfortunately got hit by a car. He loves the cozy indoor life and all the comforts it provides. Maie is a very sweet and gentle little girl who is looking for someone to love her. She may seem a little shy at first, but Maie is so very sweet and loves pets. Once she is comfortable with her surroundings, Maie is outgoing and confident. When you pet her, she will roll over on her back to give you her belly and then will purr and purr. She is sometimes afraid, at first, of other cats she doesn’t know and will hide from alphas. Maie would be a great only cat or sister to a mellow, non-alpha kitty. She also loves to play with her human and will roly poly around like a big worm when she is being petted and played with. Dolly is a beautiful medium-long haired calico. She is very sweet and playful girl with the most gorgeous big round yellow eyes. She is most happy when playing with her human companions or other kitties, but can also entertain herself alone with her toys. Although she likes to be in the company of people and sleeps at the foot of her foster mother’s bed, Dolly can be skittish when approached by people. She has made a lot of progress from the terrified kitten that her foster mother picked up off the street. Dolly is a sweetheart and very entertaining as well as being a wonderful companion and playmate to her foster kitty sisters. These cats and kittens are available for adoption through Kitten Rescue, one of the largest cat rescue groups in Southern California. All of our kitties are spayed/ neutered, micro-chipped, tested for FeLV and FIV, dewormed and current on their vaccinations.
