FEBRUARY 2014 TOWNSHIP SENIOR SERVICES Serving The Millstadt Area Since 1983 Great Chili Supper On Tuesday evening, January 8, 2013 the Village of Millstadt residents were treated to a delicious chili supper. Mike Todd gracious volunteered to make his delicious recipe. He started early in the afternoon and everyone took turns stirring the ingredients so that they carefully cumulated together by dinner time. He included some secret ingredients but I did see him use the food processer to grind green, yellow and orange peppers together. Cant wait til next year to taste it again. Clayton from Breadeaux could not keep the cheese bread coming fast enough....everyone loves it. Thank you Clayton for our generosity. More Chili Supper Pictures on Page 2 Firemen Lunch With Seniors Members of the Millstadt Fire Department recently stopped by for lunch at the Millstadt Senior Center. Everyone was excited that they finally made there. It had to be rescheduled twice because of the weather. Some of the seniors dining at the Center had questions for the Firemen of which Captain Kurt Pellman answered for them. Some of the questions included how to get asmoke detector installed and how often to you replace them. Captain Pellman (Continued on page 8) From Below the Tower Are you as tired as me of the snow? I will be so glad to see spring, I am going to be so grateful for each sun filled day and never take another for granted. Mark your calendars for Monday, February 10th! We will be holding our first Sandra M. Breitschaft Meals on Wheels Foundation fundPatty Evansco raiser. It will be held at Margarita’s in Millstadt and 12% of all sales will go to the Foundation. Please encourage your family and friends to come there that evening. The Foundation is a 501c Non-profit organization whose only goal is to support the Millstadt Meals on Wheels program. As the foundation grows it insures that there will always Meals on Wheels in our area. Did you happen to read in the paper about a young man that recently ran into a Millstadt woman’s home at 11:30 at night? Nobody was hurt but it sure surprised the woman! Please lock your doors during the day and at night. I want everyone to be safe and most of the time we will be if we don’t let our guard down. I think most of you know that Irma Hecke was in the hospital recently. You will be glad to know that she is home and doing well. Irma is the Commander in Chief of the Quilts and she does an excellent job and we will be glad when she returns. We miss you Irma. When you are sick you should know that rest and peace and quiet are often the best medicine. When you visit or call someone please limit your visits and calls to 10 to 15 minutes. Also a good thing to consider is not calling anyone past 7:00 pm that is trying to recuperate. I will just be glad when Spring gets here and all my friends are well. Famous Barr French Onion Soup Famous Barr, the downtown store in St. Louis, had a great restaurant for shoppers to enjoy. The store’s name changed to Macy’s and the St. Louis downtown store recently closed. You can still enjoy one of the shoppers favorite soups. Following is the recipe for French Onion soup complete with French bread and Swiss cheese. 3lbs. peeled onions (5 lb. bag unpeeled equals 3 lbs peeled) 4 oz. butter or margarine 1 bay leaf 1 ½ tsp. ground pepper ¾ cup flour 2 tbsp. paprika 2 tsp. salt 3 quarts beef bouillon French bread 1 cup white wine (optional) Swiss cheese Slice onions 1/8 inch thick; Melt butter or margarine in large stock pot, add the onions and sauté for 1 ½ hours. Add other ingredients except for bouillon and sauté 10 minutes more. Add bullion and simmer for 2 hours. Season with salt to taste and refrigerate overnight. Heat soup. Fill casserole or oven proof individual bowls with soup, top with 1 1/2 inch slices of French bread and top with Swiss cheese. Place under broiler for about 5 minutes or until the bread is brown and cheese is melted. DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging. Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated 6 SENIOR NEWS DID YOU KNOW? MEAL PRICES The suggested donated cost of the noon meal served daily at the Millstadt Senior Center is $4.50 per meal. The average actual cost per meal is over $10.00. In addition to the amount paid to IGA or Aunt Maggies for each meal, we must cover the cost of serving containers, cups, napkins, transportation, beverages and salaries. Over 400 meals are served or delivered weekly to seniors in Millstadt Township. Without the support of the many volunteers and donations from the community the meal cost for each senior would be considerably higher than the $4.50 suggested donation. Thanks to all our volunteers and all those who donate or contribute items to the Senior Center! World Nutella Day : February 5, 2014! The Chinese months are determined by both solar and lunar changes with the New Year coming about a month and a half after the winter solstice. The Chinese animal signs are a key part of the New Year, with this year ushering in the horse, an animal of unexpected adventure and surprising romance. These characteristics are the most pertinent to those born in the year of the horse 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014. An additional astrological factor that isn’t as well known is the element put together with each year: either metal, wood, water, fire or earth. These distinguish the year even further, with 2014 known as the year of the wooden horse or the green wooden horse, as wood is associated with greenery and nature. 8 SENIOR NEWS Millstadt High School 1940-1941 First row: Eugene Grossmann, Lorene Weber, Florence Muskopf, Melvin and Melba Hettenhausen, Louise Diesel, Vincent Meinkopf. At that time the Roman Emperor was imprisoning Christians for not worshipping the Roman Gods. During this persecution Valentine was arrested. Some write he was arrested for performing Christian marriages, but others write it was for helping Christians escape prison. During his trial they asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman Gods Jupiter and Mercury. Valentine said they were false gods and the God Jesus called Father was the only true god. The Romans threw Valentine in prison for insulting the gods. While in prison Valentine continued to minister to the prison population. One of his guards had adopted a blind girl. He asked Valentine if his God could help his daughter. Valentine prayed and the girl was given her sight. When the Roman emperor heard about this he was furious with Valentine for making converts in prison and he had Valentine beheaded on February 14. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them. Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. FEBRUARY 2014 SENIOR NEWS 15 Jokes Pastor Dave was called to a local nursing home to perform a wedding. An anxious old man met him at the door. The pastor sat down to counsel the old man and asked several questions. “Do you love her?” The old man replied, “More or less.” “Is she enjoyable to be with?” “She’s okay.” “Does she have lots of money?” asked the pastor. “I doubt it.” “You don’t sound very pleased with her; why are you marrying her?” the preacher asked. “She can drive at night,” the old man said. If so – you probably know that Issy’s Fish Stand was owned and operated by Issy Alexander. Issy’s whole life has been spent in and around Millstadt, starting with her birth at the home of her parents, Herman and Catherine Speichinger. The family farmed, and just about anything they could to provide for the family of 10 children. Issy was the second youngest, and the last to die. Issy longed to be a teacher, but her mother wouldn’t allow it. Back then, teachers weren’t allowed to marry and her mother wanted her to marry young. After completing 8th grade, Issy started working odd jobs at age 14 (like babysitting and cleaning). At 16 she started working at the Weil-Kalter Factory until the age of 19, in 1936, when Issy married Ambrose Schaefer. They had four boys- Kenneth, Ralph, Glenn and Ron. In 1943, Ambrose suddenly passed away. In 1957, Issy married Hugh Alexander (a.k.a. Lefty). He passed in 1987. Issy was proud that she had four good boys, and daughers-in-laws too! Issy also had seven grandchildren. In 1958 Issy’s Fish Stand opened, and she ran it until 1976. It was getting to be too much to handle, and was busy all the time. Issy had been given the fish stand by her brother, so she gave it back to his daughter Dee Dee. Issy liked to stay busy! She loved to play cards and bingo. She loved to dance and went cycling often. A Quilters and Senior Center charter members, Erdline Lippert (L) and Issy Alexander(R) huge travel lover-she would go anywhere! The destination was unimportant to her. Issy was always active in church. She was baptized and married at St. James in Millstadt. Lefty and Issy owned a very nice, big home in Millstadt that Issy sold after Lefty passed. It required too much upkeep so she moved to a duplex in Millstadt where she remained for 20 years, until was still afflicted with poor eyesight. Issy was a charter member at the Millstadt Senior Center. She was there on the first day and she was one of the first riders on the bus. Her memory is still alive today at the Senior Center. Everyone remembers how much she enjoyed playing cards and how she prided herself on staying fit. One person remembers that she always critiqued the coleslaw if it didn’t taste just right. Yes, she was the master cook when it came to Fish and Cole Slaw. We miss you Issy! The check was presented by Trinity Lutheran Pastor Michael Kumm and Lauri Weis, Congregation Coordinator for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. 17 Groundhog Day Groundhog Day falls on February 2, Candlemas Day in many old church calendars, a day when candles were blessed for the year to come. An old Scottish verse for the day goes: “If Candlemas Day be bright and fair Half the winter is to come and mair (more) If Candlemas Day be dark and foul Half the winter was over at Yowl (Yule).” English, German, Dutch and other nationalities have similar folkloric predictions of the weather tied to various dates and celebrations. It seems the groundhog came to the fore as a prognosticator of winter weather in the eighteenth century in the German areas of Pennsylvania, where it replaced the traditional badger as the animal of choice. One of the earliest references to the custom shows up in a shop owner’s diary in 1841. Today, famous groundhogs from Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania to Wiarton Willie in Ontario to Jimmy the Groundhog in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, have their day in the sun (or the camera lights if it’s cloudy) every February 2. If Punxsutawney has a Phil and Sun Prairie has a Jimmy let’s name one for Millstadt.
