How to THRIVE in Today’s Financial Market
1953
Gesa Credit Union
is established.
I
am excited to tell you we have reached a significant milestone in Gesa’s history.
When I arrived at Gesa in 2007, one of the goals agreed upon at my first
Strategic Planning Meeting with the Board was to reach $1 billion in assets by
2012 while holding true to our credit union principles of people helping people.
Even though the financial report you are holding shows at September 30, 2010,
we were at $980 million in assets, by year-end we had exceeded the $1 billion
dollar mark. I am happy to say that this growth is the outcome of our popularity
with our members and our relevance in our communities.
Growing over $90 million dollars in calendar year 2010 was an amazing
accomplishment for Gesa, considering the still-recovering economic climate. In
fact, the steady growth in assets and members through a harsh global economy is
affirmation that Gesa is, indeed, where people want to belong.
One of our goals in 2010 was to continue elevating service levels to our members.
We began in 2009 to implement a service training program called Creating
Member Loyalty, where we encouraged our staff to focus on your needs. This
was, in fact, a culture change that improved consistency across branches and
enhanced Gesa’s brand identity. This change not only helped Gesa grow, it offered
employees an opportunity to expand their skill set and step up to the challenge
of advancement. We want them to consider Gesa a career, not just a job. You have
confirmed by your letters and comment cards, which we receive daily, that we are
accomplishing the goal of elevating service levels.
Members will notice another improvement in service in the near future. We began
working in 2010 on major system upgrades that will improve efficiency and speed
of opening accounts and processing member requests. In addition, a modern
telephone system along with our staff capabilities will enhance your experience.
We know convenient access to your accounts is paramount. That’s why we
continue to expand our online capabilities and remote delivery. We intend to
make gesa.com your full-service 24/7 web branch. In the upcoming year, look for
online account opening, web chat and even text banking from your mobile device.
1957
Gesa grows to
975 members and
$230,000 in assets.
Upgraded first office
to 703 Building in
Richland.
The implementation of new products and services are carefully evaluated and
thoughtfully considered with our members in mind. One such program, Gesa
Financial Solutions investment services, was introduced to meet growing
membership need for expertise in financial planning and investing. Many
members have already taken advantage of this service.
Already in 2011 we’ve rolled out Long Term Care Insurance, Lifestyle Loans and
new home construction loans—and we won’t stop there! Plans for student
accounts and a Platinum Rewards Visa credit card, are also on the horizon.
You may have also noticed that along with our new branches, our long-standing
branches are getting some attention of their own. Branch upgrades and
remodels are planned in the coming years. Our new offices are designed in an
environmentally friendly fashion with safety, security, and efficiency in mind.
The decisions we make are based on your financial well-being—that’s the credit
union difference. Thank you for your membership. Together we’ve built a strong
financial cooperative.

T
he history of Gesa tells an incredible story of team spirit and solidarity.
Inspiration to succeed in our community started back in 1953, when
consumer loans were needed but difficult to attain. Luckily, the members of
General Electric Supervisor’s Association (G.E.S.A.) had the fortitude to find
a working solution to help the people of the Tri-Cities. Over the next fiftyseven years, Gesa evolved to become a well-capitalized, full-service financial
institution with nearly 100,000 members. We now serve members in 10 local
branches throughout Eastern Washington as well as seven high school campus
offices in the Tri-Cities area.
Gesa opens its first
Kennewick branch.
1981
With $57 million in
assets and 21,000
members, Gesa
Headquarters moves
to Goethals in central
Richland.
We reached new heights at the end of 2010 with over $1 billion in assets.
And this happened two years ahead of our projections. How we achieved this
milestone is where our story truly begins. It all stems from our vision, to enrich
the lives of members and communities. Over the years, we have dedicated our
efforts to help members realize dreams, to become a leader in youth financial
literacy, and to share our passion for supporting the communities we serve.
1983
Membership is opened
to Select Employee
Groups. New telephone
account access, Call-24,
and Visa Credit Cards
implemented.
Our financial strength and popularity continues to soar! Our membership
grew substantially over 8,000 to 98,000 members by year-end, a testament
to the value our credit union offers to the people of our community. Deposits
increased over $85 million. These past few years have seen turmoil in financial
markets, but thanks to our loyal members and solid business practices, we
remained a profitable institution, boasting nearly $6 million in net income last
year while maintaining a strong capital position.
1992
Home Equity Loans
introduced.
2
We’ve become known as a lender of choice as evidenced by our tremendous
loan growth of over $160 million in 2010. Our members came to us in droves
for business loans, home loans, auto financing needs as well as credit cards at
a time when other lenders were pulling back or making unfavorable changes.
Business is booming with our Venture Business suite of services. You’ve
trusted our organization for your personal needs, and now our business owner
members have put their faith in Gesa.
In addition to increasing our membership, loans and assets, we also expanded
our services with hi-tech ATMs, new and improved offices, and many other
worthwhile programs that ultimately enhanced your financial experience at Gesa.
Over the past 57 years we have evolved to become a leader in financial youth
education, a sponsor and volunteer for many community groups and events,
a good steward for our environment, and a nurturing place to manage your
finances where you feel you belong. Your Board, volunteers and employees
at Gesa take great pride in bringing you a renewed banking experience, and
we sincerely thank you for your continued support by choosing us as your
financial partner.

2010... A Year to Remember
I
n 2010 we reached new heights and found ourselves celebrating
momentous milestones. But even as we continue to increase membership
and raise your credit union’s assets, you can rest assured we’ll never lose
sight of what matters most, our passion to deliver excellent service, being a
good steward of our environment, and contributing to the well-being of the
communities where we live and do business.
By closely understanding your needs and remaining relevant to your
financial life, here’s how we delivered an “above and beyond” experience
at Gesa in 2010.
“Mystery Shop” Tells All — We constantly strive to provide a
remarkable experience, now it’s been affirmed. Last year Gesa employees
were put to the test when undercover “shoppers” came in and posed as
members or potential members. The results are in, and we’re proud to say
service scores reached a new high. Once again, Gesa employees live true
to our tagline, “It’s not where you bank. It’s where you belong.”
Money Protection Increases — We’re pleased to report your Share
Insurance Protection has been permanently increased to $250,000 by
the NCUA.
New and Improved Offices — Our contributions to the community
were well worth the investment, and we retuned the favor with a
newly remodeled branch and two new LEED® (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) certified offices for your banking convenience.
Introducing... AToM — We gave our ATMs a whole new attitude
with AToM, a techno machine who remembers you by name and lets you
customize your settings to your delight.
Gesa adds many
services; educational
seminars, website,
Visa Check Card,
walk-up ATMs and
online account access
through Gesa@Home.
Members Trust Gesa — When it came time to ask for help in
financing your dream home or that sweet ride you’ve been eyeing on
the road, Gesa was there every step of the way and delivered some
remarkable results.

Paving the Way for Financial Literacy — Gesa has become
a prominent leader with youth financial literacy in Washington. We
continue to expand and offer high school students practical hands-on
work experience with the addition of 3 new High School Credit Unions
(Kennewick, Kamiakin, and Southridge).
We’re also very active with Junior Achievement and our employees
helped raise over $11,500 last year. Having such close ties to students,
it seemed only logical to implement a private student loan solution.
Through our partner, Student Choice Network, we’ve already approved
over $2.4 million in loans.
Extra, Extra — We launched a new member focused newsletter called
Gesa At A Glance to keep you plugged in with Gesa specials and news.

ven as our business soars, supporting our community
is still the most uplifting. Ten years ago, we embarked
on a new mission: To enrich high school students with
financial literacy through applicable real-life practices.
The solution? Establish credit unions on campus that are
run by selectively trained students and powered by Gesa.
The success of this program lies within the students. We
have continued to grow and expand every year, and now
Gesa has 7 on-campus branches boasting the most high
school credit unions in the State of Washington. Hard
work and dedication drives this youth outreach program,
one that has become a very rewarding legacy at Gesa.
Today our high school outreach program has grown
tenfold, thanks to the many dedicated students, teachers
and Gesa support teams. Gesa supplies equipment,
computer systems, and operational knowledge on how
to run the branch. With guidance from their teachers and
Gesa’s Education Specialist, the students handle teller
transactions, new accounts, and plan creative promotions
to grow and expand membership.

t is the responsibility of the Supervisory Committee
of Gesa Credit Union to monitor the financial safety
and soundness of the credit union and to oversee
compliance with various financial and regulatory
requirements.
In the opinion of the Committee, Gesa Credit Union
has conducted business in a fiscally sound manner in
accordance with applicable federal regulations and
Washington State law relating to credit unions and
the Gesa Credit Union bylaws.
In the process of reaching this opinion, we engaged
the services of the independent public accounting firm
of Clifton Gunderson LLP. They performed an opinion
audit of Gesa Credit Union’s financial statements, as
of September 30, 2010. Copies are made available
upon request. The firm tests whether the financial
statements are free of material misstatement,
assesses accounting principles used, evaluates the
overall financial statement presentation, and reviews
internal controls. A key component of the internal
control is the internal auditors.
The internal auditors meet with the Supervisory
Committee monthly to review internal audit reports,
financial statement trends, information protection
status, potential fraud issues, risk assessments, and
internal control practices. The Committee also closely
monitors the results of the regular state examination.
The support and cooperation from the Board of
Directors, management and staff has assisted us in the
performance of our duties and is greatly appreciated.
It has been a privilege to serve as chairperson of the
Supervisory Committee.
Respectfully submitted,
Kimberley Pierret
