LANDFILL COMPACTION TEST TANA E520 VS. BOMAG 1172-RB This compaction study has been conducted in Belvedere Landfill, Legoli, Italy. Compaction test was conducted between TANA E520 (52 ton) machine vs. Bomag 1175-BC (55 ton) machine. Test was done by Independent Surveyor Sauro Salvadori from STUDIO TECHNICO NESTI e SALVADORI (www.geolaser3D.com) and Belvedere Landfill team. TEST RESULTS TANA E520 VS. BOMAG 1172-RB Test was conducted between 27.2-13.3.2015 in Belvedere Landfill, in Legoli, Italy. Test was done by Belvedere Landfill team with independent surveyor, highly qualified Bomag operator and TANA operator. Test shows that TANA Landfill compactor compacts 15% better than Bomag compactor. TANA was able to compact the material 850kg/m3 (1366 tons/cubic yards) and on the comparison Bomag with 740kg/m3 (1193 tons/cubic yards). Belvedere landfill team also measured the fuel consumption after every day and this was also recorded. LANDFILL FACTS: Operating days / year: 313 Tons per day: 750 (metric) Tons per year: 234 750 (metric) Machinery : TANA E520 and Bomag 1172-RB Opening hours: 7.00-17.00 Location: Legoli, Italy TANA can also handle higher capacity of waste and fully function in the peak hours. TANA Landfill compactors fuel consumption is 12% lower than Bomag machines in the same working hours and capacity. TANA COMPACTOR COMPACTS 15% BETTER THAN Active time for compaction allows Bomag machine to get closer to TANA compaction level. But on the peak hours the compaction level can be even greater than 15% as TANA achieves the compaction level quicker. BOMAG MACHINE FACTS: TANA E520 BOMAG BC 1172-RB Model: E520 (TIER 3) Model: BC 1172-RB Weight: 52 tons (111 000 lbs) Weight: 55 tons (120 000 lbs) Transmission: Hydrostatic Transmission: Hydrostatic Wheels/Drums: Full width-drums Wheels/Drums: 4 wheels The main difference between TANA and Bomag units is the full width-drum design in TANA and the four wheel set up in the Bomag unit. TANA E520 machine was 3 tons lighter than the BOMAG 1172RB. Both machines were designed for Landfill compaction and their powertrain is hydrostatic. This allows both machine to have high pushing power and maneuverability needed in the landfill. Overall the turning radius in TANA and Bomag are about the same. Both compactors are built to run over the waste multiple times and have the pushing capability to handle any waste streams coming to the landfill. We interviewed the landfill crew and all of them mentioned that TANA has more pushing power than Bomag. Also the sludge or mud was lot easier to handle with TANA, which Belvedere receives frequently. Below elaborated picture of TANA vs. Bomag compaction. Same spot driven over by TANA the whole area is compacted while Bomag leaves gaps and must run more times over the same area to get compaction done. This is the main reason that the Bomag needs more fuel to get the same area covered and compacted. With TANA full width-drum will also get the maximum compaction done quickly. The four wheel machines are not able to achieve this compaction level as the narrow wheel allows the material to escape underneath and this causes the machine to lose maximum compaction. TEST AREA: Test area was built on the new cell structure. The whole area was measured by GPS to create the surface where test was started. Every load was measured at the scale house and all the material was placed inside the test area. TANA AREA: TANA Operated test area (2 full days). Total volume used: 1639m3 and 1393 tons TANA COMPACTION 850 kg / m3 (1366 tons / cu yrd) BOMAG AREA: Bomag operator operated (2 full days). Total volume used: 1849m3 and 1373 tons BOMAG COMPACTION 740 kg / m3 (1193 tons / cu yrd) CONCLUSION: TANA compactor compacts better than Bomag machine. Bomag can get closer results with more active compaction time but it will consume lot more fuel and still will fall short of TANA’s compaction results. TANA Landfill compactor can handle higher volume per day and with lower fuel consumption. TANA compactor compacts 15% better than Bomag machine. TANA also used 12% less fuel than Bomag machine. 15% compaction improvement means: Every 7 days of operating with TANA machine, will save the landfill airspace worth of 1 day. o On average this one day airspace is nearly 1000 m3. Yearly the Landfill can save airspace worth of 45 days o 45 000 m3 of airspace can take 38 250 tons more waste 12 % fuel savings means: Bomag used on average 0,87 liters per compacted ton. TANA used on average 0,78 liters per compacted ton. o With fuel price of 1,5 € x 0,9 liters = 0,14 € per ton savings Average yearly incoming waste is approximately 300 000 tons o 300 000 tons x 0,14 € = 42 000 € yearly savings o Savings in 5 years: 42 000 € x 5 years = 210 000 € FACTS & FIGURES: REFERENCE DETAILS: BELVEDERE S.p.A - Discarica Paolo Ceccotti Sviluppo Progetti Via G. 5 – 56037 PECCIOLI (PI) Dir. 0587 936517 Tel. 0587 672073 p.ceccotti@belvedere.peccioli.net www.belvedere.peccioli.net PART.
