About the Instructors
Sheriff Richard W. Stanek
Sheriff Stanek has served as the 27th
Sheriff of Hennepin County (Minnesota)
since 2007. Before that, he was a
Commander at the Minneapolis Police
Department and served as a five-term
legislator in the Minnesota House of
Representatives, where he chaired
the House Crime Policy and Finance
Committee. He was appointed to serve
as Minnesota’s Commissioner of Public Safety and Director of
Homeland Security in 2003. Sheriff Stanek serves on the National
Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) Executive Committee and chairs the
NSA’s Homeland Security Committee. He was recently appointed
to the FirstNet Board of Directors. He holds a Master’s Degree
in Public Administration from Hamline University and received
a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice from the University of
Minnesota.
Tom Vande Berg
Tom attended the University of Montana and Chippewa Valley
Technical College. He began his career in 1978 at Bloomer Police
Department. He moved to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department
in 1990, and was proudly a “patrolman for life” until retiring in 2006.
Vande Berg has been a police firearms instructor for over 30 years,
teaching handgun, shotgun, patrol rifle and select-fire weapons,
along with chemical agents, less lethal munitions, O.C. and
distractive devices to agencies throughout Northwest Wisconsin.
Tom has been involved in SWAT since 1982, and a member and
assistant team leader of the SCSO ERU for 10 years. He has taught
SWAT tactics for WITC since 1998 and is currently the Firearms
Teaching Specialist. Since his retirement, Tom is also a a part-time
officer for the Village of Hammond Police Department.
Ted Schick
Residing in Esko, MN, Ted is a corporate
trainer, professional speaker and
consultant with his own business, Schick
Corporate Learning. A retired naval officer
who rose up from the enlisted ranks, Ted
has over 30 years of experience leading
people.
With over 20 years in teaching, Ted holds a BA in Business from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, received a teaching certificate
from Bemidji State University, and a Master of Education from the
University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Phil Chalmers
Phil is America’s leading authority on
juvenile homicide and juvenile mass
murder, has interviewed over 200 teen
killers and school shooters, and has
been studying youth culture and teen
murder for 25 years. Phil is the author
of numerous books and documentaries
including his latest two book releases,
“Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer” and
“True Lies.”
Phil also performs school assemblies nationwide, and
addresses tough topics like bullying, crime prevention,
suicide, substance abuse, Internet safety, and more. Phil’s
work has been featured on Montel Williams and Howard
Stern. Phil can be seen on the E! Network shows “Billionaire
Crime Scenes” and “Too Young To Kill “and SPIKE TV’s “Don’t
be a Victim.” He has appeared on numerous media outlets, and
has interacted with numerous media personalities, including the
Insane Clown Posse, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Jessica Simpson,
Metallica, Two Live Crew, and many more.
Capt. Jason Wilke
Jason began his career with the Wisconsin
Dept of Corrections as an Officer at
Waupun Correctional Institution, a
Sergeant at Oshkosh Correctional
Institution and promoted to a Lieutenant
at Redgranite Correctional Institution.
Jason has over 16 years’ experience in
corrections and is currently a Captain at
Redgranite Correctional Institution and a Security Threat Group
Coordinator for the Wisconsin Dept of Corrections.
Jason has provided Security Threat Group training to correctional
staff from several institutions and law enforcement agencies. Jason
is also a Certified Firearms Instructor for the State of Wisconsin.
Prior to serving the State of Wisconsin Jason served 5 years in the
United States Marine Corp.
