OCTORARO ANGUS
Sustainable Genetics – Sustainable Agriculture
The future is now
As you read this, you will see that things have not changed much at Octoraro
Angus over the past year. They continue to work on their retirement property,
which is finished with the exception of the kitchen cabinetry. A rail fence now
surrounds the front pastures and house. A new driveway was completed for safer
entry and exiting with the cattle trailer. Sherrill has started landscaping along
with some equipment help from Sam. They look forward to more time to enjoy
this and other projects when Sherrill retires in January. The pastureland joins
their daughter Beth’s Octoraro Epiphany farm and is closer to Sherrill’s mother.
The move will enable them to spend more time together.
2013 has been a challenging year health wise. Sam and Sherrill both paid the
price for living the great outdoor life with bouts of skin cancer. The dermatologist
has become their new best friend. Sherrill’s mother is 93. Her health has continued
to decline and she can no longer live alone.
One other change was the addition two years ago of a Guernsey heifer, Bella,
that grew up, produced a daughter and was Grand Champion at the Maryland
State Fair this fall. In keeping with their Angus breeding philosophies, Bella is
small in stature with a terrific udder that was 2nd best udder in her class at the AllAmerican Dairy Show in September. No, Sam is not back on the tanbark, but he
indulges Sherrill and Beth.
Otherwise, you will see few changes to this introduction to Octoraro Angus. A
third generation Angus breeder, Sam has carved a niche in the competitive world
of beef cattle breeding. After serving in Vietnam, Sam traveled throughout the
U.S., visiting Angus breeders, selling semen and doing sale preparation work
before starting his own breeding program in Chester County, PA.
In 1990, Sam moved the cattle to a rugged, 153-acre farm in Mattie, near
Breezewood. The grassy hillsides are ideal for intensive rotational grazing and
the woods provide winter shelter. Hay from neighboring farms supports the 150
head of Angus through the winters. Seventy to eighty calves are born each year
through natural cover and artificial insemination.
After moving to Bedford County, Sam met Sherrill, a local woman with a Guernsey
dairy background. The first public sale of Octoraro Angus females was in 1994.
Sam and Sherrill married in 1996. They have worked together producing a unique
sustainable herd of pure pedigree Angus cattle.
The Wylies breed cattle from a different angle than most breeders today. The
cattle survive on pasture and hay year-round without supplementation from corn,
other grains or concentrates, and their stock are derived from pure foundation
1
bloodlines. They value traits, such as maternal efficiency and longevity, which
they believe has been lost in many modern breeding programs that emphasize
meat production at the expense of these characteristics. Sam and Sherrill got
back to the basics and raise cattle that thrive on low-input, sustainable grassland
farming. They use minimal fuel and equipment to process the hay.
Their breeding practices have found a wide market, with their time-tested seed
stock sought by Angus breeders throughout the United States and Canada. They
are breeding producer-friendly cattle for farmers who want to get back to the
pure, breeder-type Angus of long ago. Tallgrass Beef Company Preferred Genetics
added Octoraro Angus to their list of acceptable genetics in 2007. This
distinction is attributed to the Octoraro Angus cattle being bred for maternal
efficiency and longevity. In 2008, the Pa. Angus Association and the Pa.
Cattlemen’s Association named them Seed Stock Producer of the Year.
Years ago Jim Lingle, while at Wye Plantation, mentored Sam, causing him to
believe in the goodness of the Wye maternal program. The Wylies purchased the
rare, unique gene pool of the Newport Farm Wye based cattle in 2005. They have
not made radical changes in these cows, but have bred them to be more consistent
and predictable by utilizing semen from the old time tested Wye bulls. Some of
the progeny of these animals are offered this year. Sam has been fortunate through
the years to have some of the best breeders in the nation mentor him, which
instilled in him his values and goals. His main goal continues to be preserving
the maternal goodness and purity of the Angus breed. This type of disciplined
breeding program enables the Wylies to share both the Wye genetics and their
own homebred gene pool. Sam enjoys mentoring the next generation of breeders.
Years ago, Sam coined the term, Genetic Seed Saver, as the title for their sale.
The term sums up what Octoraro Angus is all about; preserving the original,
traditional type of Angus cattle. They have not perused the modern, high tech,
scientific improvement process that so many have engaged in here in the USA.
Sam says that breeding cattle is an art, which should be used for genetic damage
control. They refer to their style of breeding as pure-breeder type. They do not
expect their cattle to be everything to everybody. They have concentrated on the
cow, maternal efficiency and least cost production, rather than the terminal growth
and carcass traits that are often antagonistic to what they are trying to accomplish.
The Wylies take their job as your seedstock supplier seriously. They do not
continuously outcross their gene pool for bigger, better numbers. Through line
breeding and tight breeding, they feel that they can breed more predictability,
consistency and prepotency into their female lines. With the turmoil surrounding
genetic defects in the Angus breed the past few years, and the possibility of more
coming, they are pleased that there has been no defects found within their gene
pool. They believe that their job is to design and create females that will work for
the long haul, up to twenty years of age. Sam often jokingly states, “There is only
one thing we need more of in Angus cattle and that is more Angus.”
2
For the fifth year, we welcome consignments from Octoraro Epiphany Place,
New Paris, PA, and Em Brook Farm, Schellsburg, PA, to our annual sale. These
cattle reflect pure breeder type genetics developed under low input production
models. Many of these cattle descend from cows purchased from Octoraro Angus
and continue to carry the same great bloodlines. We have purchased cattle back,
including the 404 cow that sold to Sinclair Cattle Company for $10,000 six years
ago.
Come early on Saturday, November 16, 2013, to view the sale offering of the
entire 2009 crop of Octoraro Angus spring calving females, multiple fall calving
cows with calves at side or due shortly after sale day and rare semen. This is an
excellent set of cows that are maternal, trouble free foundation genetics. A
complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The cattle will not go through
a traditional sale ring. The sale will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. in the tent. Sam
and Sherrill look forward to welcoming you to their Eighteenth Genetic Seed
Saver Sale. The Wylies would like to once again thank you, their valued customers,
friends, family and neighbors for your continued interest in and support of their
program. A special thanks to family, friends and the consigners that help
throughout the year. The Wylies sincerely believe that as they go about their life
work that they are being guided by a great power from above, for which they
continue to be thankful.

Octoraro Miss Wix 902 is a direct daughter of the good New Zealand Glanworth Waigroup
130 bull. We’ve never had very many of these cows, but the ones we have, do a very
respectable job. This cow is out of a productive cow family. Her dam, granddam and great
granddam were all very positive contributors to our breeding program. 902 is raising a big,
strapping weaner bull calf by the Encore 508 bull. She is rebred for spring calving to the
same Encore 508 bull (15294722). This is a nice young cow. A-I to 508 bull on 7/6/13.
Cleaned up 7/7/13 through 9/5/13 to Vikulation (17447045).

functional aged cow. She is 11 years old and still working in our program. 903 is a young
cow that shuffled back into the fall program. She will sell with a dandy heifer calf at side,
sired by Ballot 714 (17147394). The calf was born 10/02/2013, weighing 82 pounds. This is a
nice productive pair.

Octoraro Queen Missie 906 is sired by our original Ritolation bull and is linebred to the Delia
cow family. Her dam, our 310 daughter that wears the 326 brand may be the best cow in our
program. This cow has done an outstanding job. One of our better two year olds in
production is 906’s daughter. 906 has a dandy spring heifer calf at side by Emulation 310,
which we will be retaining. We really like this cow, as she is fancy uddered, and built for the
long haul. We rebred her to Ritolation 301 (16666794) A-I on 7/6/13. Cleaned up 7/7/13

Octoraro Delia 909 is definitely a sale feature. She is a double linebred Delia. Her dam was
the good 404 cow that we just recently purchased back from the Sinclair Cattle Company at
their Eastern herd dispersal sale. They used 404 successfully in their flush program. 404 is
10 years old and her dam lasted until 20 years of age and Sam believes 404 will last that
long as well. 909 is by our Octoraro Embassy 301 bull. She is just about right, very correct,
very complete, and does quite a job. She was A-I to the Ritolation bull (16666794) on
7/6/13. Cleaned up 7/7/13 through 9/5/13 to Vikulation (17447045). We highly recommend
this cow.

very complete and correct. A solid working cow that is productive and has done a good job
for us, she leaves us with multiple daughters. We have a weanling daughter this year by the
good Emulation 310 bull. 911 is rebred for an early April calf to the good 310 Emulation bull
(12975036) on 7/7/13. Cleaned up 7/7/13 through 9/5/13 to Vikulation (17447045). We highly

For a number of years Octoraro Angus has gathered frozen semen on many of the old pillar
bulls of the breed. In recent years there have been strong inquiries about purchasing semen
out of our cache. Therefore, we have decided to offer you semen on twelve of the best, old,
maternal efficiency bulls, some of which are proven defect free. There will be two units
offered per bull, except for 707. We would recommend that due to the rareness, uniqueness
and scarcity of this semen, that you only use one unit per flush or IVF. There are reserves on
all semen packages.
