Alumni Insider
November 2015
I’ve been thinking about generosity a lot lately but not the monetary kind. This is
because I have seen so many of our students, our alumni, or our faculty and staff
making generous donations of their time and talent by volunteering to serve local
communities.
CitySERVE 2015
Last month our Philadelphia Area Alumni Club held its first community service
project with a clean-up day at Holy Cross School, an elementary school in an
underserved neighborhood in the area. Alumni mentors met with King’s students to
offer career advice at the McGowan School of Business Forum held in Philadelphia.
The NEPA Alumni Club volunteered at Blue Chip Farms, a local animal rescue
center. This year, FallSERVE also stayed local, with students volunteering to work
with an abandoned mine reclamation project. The King’s Sports Medicine Society
had another great trick-or-canning event, collecting over 600 food items to benefit
St. Vincent DePaul’s soup kitchen in Wilkes-Barre.
This month, our campus focuses on poverty and hunger with special projects during Hunger for Justice Week, Empty
Bowls, and volunteering at area food banks. Our Washington Area Alumni Club (KWAC) hosts King’s students this
week for Career Day, now in its seventh year.
This small sampling illustrates the King’s community’s life-long commitment to service. But don’t take it from me:
others notice it too. For the sixth straight year, King’s ranked in the top 10 nationally in public service in a Washington
Monthly magazine. Thank you, Monarch Nation for all the good you do!

Young Alumni: Career Tune Up
Last month young alumni were invited back to campus
for a presentation about how to stand out in their
current job and to visualize their future careers. Career
planning staff were on-hand to review resumes and a
photographer snapped professional photos perfect for
use on LinkedIn bios and other social media purposes.
Be on the look out for upcoming networking
opportunities like this geared specifically for our most
recent graduates.
Alumni Club Community Service
Two King’s alumni clubs organized community service events last month. The
NEPA Club (pictured on page 1) volunteered at Blue Chip Farms, a local
animal rescue center. Nine members of the Philadelphia Area Alumni Club
spent a Saturday painting walls in need of a fresh coat at Holy Cross School
in Mt. Airy. Pictured at right in Philadelphia are: Phil Curtin ’84, Tim Marrer
’05, Bob Zimmerman ’05, Nick Sorino ’06, Samantha Leandri ’05, Shannon

Baumgardner children: Conor, Shea and Scarlett.
More Than $250,000 Raised at Lackenmier Award Ceremony Honoring Alumnus Rich Pinola
The second annual Rev. James Lackenmier, C.S.C. Award for Achievement
and Leadership was presented to Rich Pinola ’67 in October at the Union
League of Philadelphia at dinner following the McGowan Business Forum.

the retired chief executive officer of Right Management Consultants, a
career transition and organizational consulting business, During his
leadership, Right Management offices increased from 90 to 300. The

Week magazines.
More than $250,000 was raised at the dinner for the Presidential Hope
Fund, a critically important resource that supports King’s students facing
financial hardships that compromise their ability to complete their
undergraduate studies. Follow this link to see a video produced for the
event about the fund.

Guest Artist James Godwin Joins King’s Theater Production of “The Illusion”
James Godwin will join the King’s College production of Tony Kushner’s “The Illusion” as
a professional guest artist. Godwin will create and build a large-scale puppet for the
character called The Amanuensis, which he will also puppeteer. Working alongside a
professional actor and artist is a valuable learning opportunity for our students and his
creation should prove to be a wonderful viewing experience for the audience. “The
Illusion” runs from November 12 to 15 and November 19 to 21 in the George P. Maffei II
Theatre at King’s. Reservations are strongly recommended. Call or email the box office at

King’s College Calling!
It’s time for the 41st Annual Alumni Phonathon! Student callers are already
dialing for dollars and (hopefully) ringing those cow bells every night as we
raise annual fund dollars in support of scholarships, programs, and facility
and technological upgrades on campus. The annual fund touches every
corner of campus and every gift counts. When we call, be sure to answer
the phone. Missed our call? Make a gift online now: kings.edu/giving.
King’s also participates in Giving Tuesday. Learn more
