Hope and Faith for 2013
Despite a spate of devastating natural disasters and
calamities, more recently
the great deluge that is supertyphoon “Pablo “ in Mindanao, a great number of
Filipinos still remain unfazed, optimistic and strong
in their belief that “the best
is yet to come “ in the days
ahead of the new year.
According to reports, the
Philippines is now a “ new
emerging Tiger “ thanks to
its steady and credible climb
in the world’s economic lad-
der. It is now Asia’s new financial showcase, not the
previously
embarrassing
reputation as the “basket
case “ of the region.

MANILA FEEDBACK
Tubbataha Reef damage getting worse
MANILA, Philippines -Damage to the Tubbataha
Reef has worsened as winds
and waves shoved to 90 degrees the minesweeper “USS
Guardian” that ran aground
Thursday.
A report from ABS-CBN
News Palawan’s Edinel
Magtibay said water is already seeping into the
minesweeper, which supposedly initially damaged at
least 10 meters of the coral
reefs.
USS Guardian: Aground in restricted waters
BUT...US Navy expresses regret
for Tubbataha incident
MANILA, Philippines – A
commander of the United
States Navy on Monday expressed regret for the
grounding of the USS Guardian last week, which damaged the protected Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea.
In a statement, U.S. 7th Fleet
Commander Vice Admiral
Scott Swift said he “greatly
regret(s) any damage this
incident has caused to the
Tubbataha Reef.”
The USS Guardian had come
from a port call in Subic Bay
and was on its way to Indonesia when it ran aground
the Tubbataha Reef early
morning Thursday. At least
10 meters of the coral reef
have been damaged.
“We know the significance of
the Tubbataha Reefs Natural
Park and its importance as a
World heritage Site. Its protection is vital, and we take
seriously our obligations to
protect and preserve the
maritime
environment,”
Swift said.
continue to work with the
Philippine government to
assess the extent of the damage to reef and the surrounding marine environment caused by the grounding,” the U.S. Navy said.
Meanwhile, an assessment
team from the U.S. Navy has
already arrived in Palawan
to work on the extraction of
the USS Guardian from the
Tubbataha Reef.
Lt. Commander Ralph Kris
Hooper, public affairs officer
of the U.S. 7th Fleet, said the
extraction team includes
engineers, divers, and other
essential personnel.
Filipino lawmakers have begun questioning the U.S.
warship’s presence in Philippine waters.
Sen. Francis Escudero, chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, is asking if
the ship had authorized access.
Swift said Rear Adm. Thomas Carney will take over as
the on-scene commander on
January 21 to oversee the
Guardian recovery operations.
“Were we informed of its
presence in our territory?
Why can’t we have official
word from concerned authorities about the official
status of the ship in our waters?” Escudero asked.
Carney, the Commander of
Logistics Group in Western
Pacific, will embark the destroyer USS Mustin. Along
with other US Navy vessels,
the USS Mustin “is focused
on preventing any further
environmental damage to
the reef and surrounding
marine environment.”
Sen. Loren Legarda, meanwhile, wants the Presidential
Commission on the Visiting
Forces Agreement and the
Philippine Coast Guard to
explain why the USS Guardian was in the waters near
the Tubbataha Reef, which
are considered a “no navigation area.”
The U.S. Navy said that there
has been no change on the
Guardian’s condition and
there are no traces of an oil
slick in the area.
“When the Guardian is safely
recovered by the U.S. Navy,
the U.S. government will
UNESCO declared the Tubbataha Reef a World Heritage Site in 1993. It covers
130,028 hectares and is
home to thousands of marine species. With a report
from ANC and The Philippine
Star.
The Palawan government
said it will ask the United
States Navy to pay for the
damages.
Palawan Governor Abraham
Kahlil Mitra and the Protected Area Management Board
said it will take 20 to 100
years to fix the damaged
reefs, a marine sanctuary
southeast of the province.
United States authorities
earlier said an inaccurate
navigation chart data has
led to the grounding of the
minesweeper.
A statement from the Pacific
Fleet public affairs indicated
that, “the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
(NGA) today (January 19)
provided preliminary findings of a review on Digital
Nautical Charts (DNC) that
contain inaccurate navigation data and may have
been a factor in the Guardian grounding that occurred
in the Sulu Sea on Jan. 17.”
Malacanang said, however,
it will await a final investigation before it will disclose
the
government’s
next
move.
In an interview with radio
dzRB, deputy presidential
spokesperson Abigail Valte
said “it will be prudent to
wait for the results of the
investigation that will be
conducted by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of National Defense, etc.” ABS-CBNnews.com
Busy sked for PNoy at Davos forum
MANILA, Philippines President Aquino has at
least 10 engagements
when he attends the annual meeting of the
World Economic Forum
(WEF) in Davos, Switzerland this week – the first
time he is attending the
international gathering
since he assumed office
in June 2010.
Deputy
presidential
spokesperson
Abigail
Valte said that aside from
those engagements, Aquino may have “pull aside”
or “small chat” meetings
with world and business
leaders.
“The 10 events consist of
events that are sponsored by the WEF itself,
while the others are hosted by private companies
and other global economic leaders who will be
meeting with the President,” Valte said over
state-run dzRB radio yesterday.
Aquino may also have
more engagements during “informal gatherings,”
Valte said.

Ban the Gun?
Word of the year for 2012 :
“GUN “. As 2012 was nearing its end in December, we
were shocked by the grim
news of a shooting rampage
in Newport town, Connecticut that claimed the lives of
26 persons including 20 kindergarten kids.

Hope and Faith for 2013
on transparency or openness and the hallmark
“matuwid na Daan “ (the
right path)is steering the
country to unprecedented
heights.
Exorcising the age-old corruption in the bureaucracy
and in the way of life among
Filipinos is now the priority
of the new administration of
President Noynoy Aquino,
the heir of democracy icons
former president Corazon
C.Aquino and martyred senator
Benigno
“Ninoy
“Aquino.
In one of his speeches before foreign business moguls and investors, he declared that the Philippines “
is now open for business “.
Indeed, there is proof or indications of all these.
The more than a million
OFWs or Overseas Filipino
Workers, contribute at least
a conservative $18 billion to
the national economy yearly, spurring a frenzy of
spending among their families and pouring needed
money in the local businesses .
The proliferation and con-
struction of more condos,
big commercial malls, casinos that rivals the likes of
Macau if not Las Vegas are
proof of the new found status of the country as an
emerging Asian financial
hub.
The peso is experiencing a
strong showing against the
US dollar in an all time record of P40 pesos to $1.00 US
dollar whereas before it was
hovering between P45-P46.
But of course much has to
be done. There must be
change in the politics of old
“trapos “to a new responsive and action oriented discipline; a decent life for
most Filipinos in the bottom
rung of the societal strata
while at the same time, the
issues of poverty and unemployment must be given
high priority.
There is therefore much
hope yet a lot work to be
done. But as million of devotees of the Black Nazarene
that line up the annual
“translacion “ (a reenactment of the transfer of the
original icon from its origin
to its present location at the
Quiapo Basilica) all declare
in their affirmation, that the
Filipinos never waned in
their Faith and Hope in their
God and Country.
The lone shooter, a disturbed and mentally unstable kid, used a very powerful assault rifle to mow
down his victims.
In Manila
suburb of
Caloocan city, Stephanie Nicole Ella, suddenly collapsed
while watching the traditional New Year’s eve fireworks, a victim of a stray .45
caliber bullet that landed on
her head causing her death
days later.
There were many cases of
stray bullet victims during
that new year’s eve from
guns that should not have
been fired in the first place
but as it happens year in
and out, these senseless
criminals chose to do so out
of thrill or plain “yabang”
grandstanding) to impress
friends.
Four days later on January
4, 2013, the new year was
once again shattered by another news of a massacre in
Kawit, Cavite when a drugcrazed former village official
went from house to house
firing at random at everyone in sight including his
own goddaughter. The carnage claimed the lives of
eight persons including the
gunman himself who was
gunned down by responding police officers.
The following week, 13 people, including three police
and military officers were
allegedly ambushed in an
isolated highway checkpoint
in Atimonan, Quezon manned by police and military
authorities. However, initial
investigations showed it
was not an encounter between the police and suspected criminal elements
but reportedly a result of a
conflict of interest in gambling or Jueteng (illegal
numbers game) between
the two groups.
The victims were all peppered with bullets with
some shot at close range in
the head.
The death of Nicole has triggered a massive call for
stricter gun control laws if
not a total gun in the Philippines. In the US, President
Obama has announced
measures to curb or control
gun ownership.
Guns in the wrong hands,
improper handling or lack
of training are some of the
reasons why lives are lost
unnecessarily.
It may be or may not be a
problem of gun or the socalled “culture of guns“ to
be blamed for all these sad
episodes but it has got to
stop.
For instance, the Philippines
has at least 1 million loose
firearms which means potentially, these can be used
in criminal activities.
Additionally, there are also
the same number of licensed firearms in the
hands of civilians but these
number can be easily traced
and checked.
In America, the ownership
of gun is guaranteed by the
constitution. This is based

But in the Philippines, the
criminals have become so
sophisticated in terms of
firearms that sometimes,
the police are hamstrung to
stop them while gun ownership is so rigid and expensive that ordinary citizens
are left to fend for themselves against bad elements.
In the light of all these,
should there be a gun ban, a
regulated gun control or
regulated gun ownership?

NOW THE GOOD NEWS: The
Philippines has been termed
as the economic success story of the year 2012 and for
this year might make it as
the
newest
“economic
Tiger” of Asia if trends continue.
Proof of this recognition is
word that President Noynoy
Aquino will be the main
speaker at the Davos, Switzerland World Economic
Forum which is to be attended by major world economic companies, organizations and governments.
The forum takes place January 23-27 and is a series of
meetings among organizations and governments to
tackle important economic
world issues.
According to reports, the
Philippines was 2012’s
world’s 44th largest economy but “ if current trends
hold, it could jump to 16th
place by the year 2050 “.

The Redemptorist
Mary, Mother of God
Santo Arrigo, C.Ss.R
I
t’s the most wonderful
time of the year to
make and break resolutions.
The need to
make those resolutions have
been tugging at our hearts
for months, and for some
the last few weeks. Like,
taking more time to take
care of ourselves. More exercise. Less food. There’s
that short fuse that gave
everybody in the family
their “on-edge” Christmas.
Whatever the resolution,
we’ve spent a lot of time
pondering what to do.
Pondering…our Gospel today shares with us that
Mary pondered in her heart
all that had taken place. She
treasured and pondered all
that had taken place in those
days.
The birth of her
child…the shepherds’ tale of
angels proclaiming to them
the good news that their
Saviour had been born...the
Messiah...the Lord. Imagine
hearing these definitions of
your child being told to you.
It would leave us speechless.
Mary took it all in and treasures all these things and
ponders them in her heart.
Mary is just an ordinary
woman, living in ordinary
times. Very similar times as
today, with all its good and
bad. She is an ordinary human being whom God
reached out to, in order to
embrace humanity. She may
be an ordinary person, but
she did an extraordinary
thing.
Both Matthew and Luke
open their Gospels celebrating how God visits his people in the birth of Jesus.
Mary, a young Jewish girl is
chosen to be the mother of
the Son of God. There is no
suggestion that Mary is
longing and praying for a
child of her own. There is
no suggestion that Mary, like
Sarah and Elizabeth, is old
and barren. Mary is young
and a virgin.
But just as old age and being
barren are no barriers to the
plan of God, neither is youth
or virginity. For as we hear
in the story, nothing is impossible for God.
In being the mother of Jesus,
Mary does the same things
as any mother, nurturing
within her womb the great
development of a little child
taking shape. Another human being is formed in the
mother’s body, but the
mother can never keep the
child within her. But Motherhood not only means having a baby, but also letting
Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4: 4-7; Luke 2:16-21
go of the baby and watch
them grow to adulthood.
That is something which
Mary had to do, not only to
nurture Jesus in his growing,
but eventually let him go his
way to make a future for
himself a future in line with
his father’s will.
Jesus is
Mary’s son. He is her own,
but not her own. He belongs
to her, but also to many.
Mary has to do what God,
the Father did let go of his
Son. And that is what Mary
does. She does not anxiously clutch Jesus to herself, but
gives him to us. She asks us
to do what she does. Share
Jesus with everyone. Give
Him as good news of life to
others.
Mary is the first among us,
human beings, who accepted the word of God in her
life and received Jesus. She
is the first Christian, the
First Disciple. As we gather
today, on this beginning of
the new year, we turn to
Mary as our mother, Our
Mother of Perpetual Help,
mindful of her intercession
for us and for our world.
Mary’s pondering of the
events of those days is an
image for us that might
bring us closer and deeper
into our need to make resolutions as this year begins.
She treasured the gift of God
resting in her arms. A mystery indeed. But something
as real as you and me.
Ponder this year the mystery of who you are. Who
Christ is for you this year.
Ponder the great mystery of
how you and I are connected, how we connect with our
brothers and sisters around
us. Perhaps one of our resolutions to ponder is to find
time to ponder to be in
God’s presence for a little bit
each day and engage ourselves in conversation with
Jesus discovering, as the
Shepherds, the meaning of
who he is now for you, as
Messiah and Lord.
the hopes of this coming
year, a year for peace, let’s
not dwell on the past, God
doesn’t. Let’s look forward
to the peace that God continues to bring to birth in us,
just as God did through

calls each one of us his sisters and brothers to live a
life of grace.

"Never before has such a

in one event," said festival
director and former Presidential aspirant Nicanor

These include Gawad Kalinga founcer Tony Meloto,
businesswoman and environment advocate Gina

Several other leaders from

organizations both from the
Philippines and abroad will
also be featured in the festival.
"The Philippines and the
world have the talent and
the smarts to create a world
of promise, excitement, and

This, as he noted that Liwanag will showcase "brilliant,
heart-centered initiatives in
all dimensions of sustainability: ecological, economic,
cultural, political, societal,
human,

spiritual."
The
festival's
name
"liwanag" is the Filipino

Teaching with
Care and
Confidence
On a visit to the North American
School of Information Technology
(NASIT), it became apparent to us
why NASIT has become one of the
fastest growing private career colleges in the GTA. It was upon invitation that we met with the very
amiable founders and directors
of NASIT, Leila Chong, RN and Linda
Ng, RN (see photo), who gave us a
tour of the school and happily introduced us to the dynamic personalities from the different community
agencies who were present during
our visit.
We immediately recognized how
this particular school stood out
amongst the other private career
centres in Toronto which we had
visited in the past. Several reasons
played out in our inquiring minds,
but what really became significant
are facts that we discovered during
our tour of the school and these are,
to name a few are, first, NASIT's dynamic team of school directors and
very knowledgeable teaching staff;
secondly, a strong multicultural
makeup of its student body; thirdly,
the school's well-equipped and spacious classrooms which give each
student enough private space,
among others.
What impressed us most is the im-
portant fact that NASIT's founders
and directors share a combined 60
years of experience in the health
care field plus a wealth of network
in the government agencies, such as
the Citizenship and Immigration, to
assist in reaching their goal of a rewarding career for their graduates. A "must-haves" for anyone
who wants to be educated and
trained the Canadian way.
NASIT offers courses to obtain your
Diploma in Business Administration, Personal Support Worker, IT,
Early Childhood course, and Network Administration. In addition, NASIT also offers Certificate
courses in CPR/First Aid, Crisis Prevention Intervention, Assisting
Medicaion, ESL/EFL, among others. NASIT is conveniently located

We all go through life differently. We take different paths, choose different friends and
follow different dreams. It’s what makes us special. It’s also why we think funerals
should be unique. They are a defining moment in our journey. A time to celebrate a life.
And whether we walked our years in wingtips or sandals is not important.
What matters is that you now know a funeral home that recognizes the difference.

Chinese New Year
in the Philippines
In the Philippines, a Tsinoy is a Filipino of Chinese heritage. It is a combination of "Tsino" meaning Chinese
and the slang word "Pinoy" meaning
Filipino. (The term Intsik has fallen
out of favor.)
Drangon and Lion Dance. There is
a parade of dancing lions or a dragon in the Binondo district of Manila
(the primary Chinatown) and even
in a few other cities in the Philippines where there is a sizable Chinese presence.
The lion's head is large and has a
body of long, colorful fabric. Dancers
must be strong in holding it up and
skillful in manipulating it in an animated way. Homeowners leave ang
pao on top of their entrance gates or
hang it by their door for the lion
dancers to pick up while dancing in
costume.
2. Make sure there are healthy, preferably blooming, plants around the
house. They symbolize life and renewal.
3. Settle all debts. You must not owe
anyone money.
4. Thoroughly clean the house before the first day of the year.
5. Get a haircut and wear new
clothes.

New Year Food
in the Philippines
Filipino Food - Holiday Food
1. Decorate house doors with red
scrolls on which Chinese characters
are written and hang up red paper
lanterns.
1. Tikoy is the most popular treat
during Lunar New Year festivities in
the Philippines, as iconic as the Chinese New Year's cake nian gao is in
other countries. In fact, tikoy is said
to be based on the nian gao of southern China from where Fukienese
immigrants to the Philippines came.
It is made from sticky or glutinous
rice which is ground into flour and
then mixed with lard, water and
sugar. Using white sugar produces
white tikoy and using brown sugar
produces brown tikoy . Other popular flavors include green pandan and
purple ube .
Even non-Chinese Filipinos buy
tikoy in boxes during this time of
year to give to business associates.
Store-bought tikoy is chilled in the
refrigerator to make it easy to slice
into small pieces. The tikoy slices
are dipped in a bowl of beaten eggs
and then fried in oil. Here is a picture of the finished product.
Tikoy is sweet and sticky enough to
keep the Kitchen God's mouth shut.
Offering tikoy keeps him from saying anything bad about you.
2. Pansit. Uncut noodles are served
for long life. The two favorite noodle
dishes during the Chinese New Year
in the Philippines are: pancit bihon
and pancit canton.
3. Whole fish. To invite wealth and
happiness in the upcoming year,
dishes are served that are homophones for words that signify good
fortune. For example, the Chinese
word for "fish" sounds like the word
"surplus" as in a surplus of weath.

There has been a significant Chinese
presence in the Philippines even before the Spaniards arrived in the
15th century. Chinese Filipinos currently number four million, making
up five percent of the Philippine
population.
Chinese Filipinos celebrate the Lunar New Year in January or February. It is not an official holiday in the
Philippines, but students in Chinese
schools are let out early.
Chinese-Filiino Traditions Associated with the Lunar New Year.
The food most fondly looked forward to during Chinese New Year in
the Philippines is tikoy, a treat
made from sticky rice. You can buy
it from stores only at this time of the
year (January and February) but
don't forget that you have to cook it
first before eating!
Red Envelopes. Red is considered
the luckiest color and everyone tries
to dress in it and have red things all
around. Children expect to receive
fresh peso bills inside bright red envelopes on which are written Chinese characters. They are
called hong bao in Mandarin or ang
pao in Hokkien, the language used
by Chinese Filipinos.

How can you tell if it's a dragon or a
lion that's dancing? The dragon has
a longer body and is controlled by
eight or more people. Its body is
propped up with poles. The lion has
four legs (two dancers — one in
charge of the head and the other of
the tail end). The dancer in front
who holds the lion's head can make
its ear wiggle and blink its eyes. He's
the one in charge of picking up
the ang pao.
Chinese Greeting. In the Hokkien
language that most Chinese Filipinos
speak, the Chinese New Year greeting is Kiong Hee Huat Tsai. To compare, the Cantonese version dominant in Hong Kong is Kung Hei Fat
Choi and the Mandarin is Gong Xi Fa
Cai. It means "Congratulations and
Be Prosperous."
How to prepare for Chinese New
Year:
Not only is the Philippines more fun
for young tourists looking for adventure but also for foreign retirees
seeking refuge for old age.
The country has been ranked 15th
out of 22 of the "World's Top Retirement Havens in 2013" released
by Ireland-based website International Living.
The ranking grew from only 19
countries in the previous list, which
did not include the Philippines.
The Philippines got a score of 79.5
point in the Retirement Index,
based on eight categories crucial for
4. Pomelos, oranges & pineapples
The most popular fruit during Chinese New Year is mandarin oranges
or tangerines because of their round
shapes and golden color. Because
oranges were not widely grown in
the Philippines and were only imported in recent decades, suha (the
local pomelo, sort of like a large
grapefruit with a very thick rind)
has became the Philippine fruit that
one gives away or serves to visitors
during the Chinese New Year season. As for the pineapple, it resembles the word for "prosperity" in
Hokkien, the Chinese language of
most Tsinoys.
5. Boiled dumplings are served
because luck is symbolically
wrapped inside. And the shape of
certain dumplings is reminiscent of
the shape of gold ingots in ancient
China.
.
6. Hopia is a pastry usually filled
with a sweet paste of mung bean.
The most popular shape is round
and anything round is considered a
symbol of good fortune among the
Chinese. It is like a small, humble
version of moon cakes that the Chinese serve during the mid-Autumn
festival.
7. Lumpia are spring rolls or egg
rolls that Fukien Chinese immigrants brought to the Philippines
and Indonesia.
.
8. Vegetables. Although most Chinese Filipinos are of Christian faith,
Buddhism retains influence in their
culture, and it is a Buddhist belief
that you are cleansed by eating
green vegetables.
9. Sweets. Kids love chocolate gold
coins with their shiny foil wrappers.
Candy and other sweet things such
as dried fruit and candied lotus root
are given in a traditional Chinese
box or tray. The "Tray of Togetherness" is octagon-shaped and has
eight compartments. Eight is considered the luckiest number by the Chinese.
10. Peanuts and Seeds. Cooked
sunflower and pumpkin seeds are
among the food items that are included in the the compartments of
the traditional Chinese New Year
tray. Melon seeds are dyed red to
symbolize good luck.

“No, Robert ‘The Ghost’
Guerrero,” cries international boxing correspondent Anthony Andales.
The US-based aeronautics
engineer says Manny
Pacquiao would “really be
Brenda (brain-damaged) if
he decides to face Guerrero.”
Why?
“Guerrero is a master boxer
who thrives on craft and
science,” he explains.” A perfect match for Pacquiao is
Brandon Rios, a certified
slugger.”
Andales says Pacquiao can
tle on April 27.
Donaire earlier said he
wanted to fight undefeated

Abner

But Mares fights under
Golden Boy Promotions,

Cuba’s Rigondeaux, on the

So who’s Mr. Andales?
It would help to run this

before Pacquiao fourth encounter with Marquez.
“If Manny will be extremely
aggressive as they plan to
do, he might get knocked
down, or even stopped.
Marquez has mastered
Manny’s style, kabisado na.”
He added: “In each of their
last three fights, Marquez
continued to improve, while
Pacquiao declined. If we are
to graph the performance, I
expect Marquez to have a
decision or late KO. Especially now when Manny’s
heart is not for boxing anymore.”

Andales put $500 on underdog Marquez and collected
$1,200.
He continued to explain: “If
you noticed Marquez was
the only pure boxer among
Manny’s opponents, all the
others were pure sluggers
who stood in front and were
either knocked out or retired by Manny.”
Anyway, after his latest text
message, Andales was asked
whether he noticed
Pacquiao could still hit hardbut could no longer take a

“Well, they can do something about that,” he said.
How?
“They should take out Freddie Roach or they could give
him an assistant who can

Underwater Hockey: Philippines’ Fastest Growing Water Sport
In 1979, the president of a
dive shop in Manila named
Dive Asia, read an article
about underwater hockey in
a World Underwater Federation (CMAS) magazine. After
inquiring and receiving information about game rules and
equipment, their first underwater game was held in the
shop's own pool in 1980. It
reached the dive club at the
University of the Philippines,
known as the U.P. Divers
were they became the first to
find a regular venue for the
scrimmage games. They first
played at Quezon City Sports
Club swimming pool every
Tuesday night from 1984 to
1997.
By 1990, these players finally
incorporated themselves into
the Philippine Underwater
Hockey Club. Since then, it
has evolved to become the
Philippine Underwater Hockey Confederation (PUHC) and
is recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and
the Confederation Mondiale
des Activites Subaquatiques
(World Underwater Federation).
Clubs and International
Tournaments
Exposure was not limited to
Metro Manila. The group's
enthusiasm for underwater
hockey has brought some
PUHC members to places like
Cebu, Angeles, Bacolod and
Quezon. By October 1998, the
first PUHC Affiliate, the Bacolod Underwater Hockey
Team was inducted into the
PUHC. And the first game of
the Davao Underwater Hockey Club was held in November 2002.
A PUHC member, Joey Carpio
helped built the Singapore
club. PUHC try to extend its
networks by building more
clubs like the Cebu Underwater Hockey Club last year and
soon their very own club
based in Australia. With some
of the PUHC members playing in the United States, Singapore and Australia teams,
it has brought its local team
to compete in international
competition.
Enthusiasm for underwater
hockey inevitably brought
the PUHC to the Pacific Coast
Championships in Canada, an
international competition for
the first time in 1995. The
group returned the following
year to have its Mixed Division entry streak to a remarkable Fourth Place finish
amidst a dozen other teams
at the 1996 PCCs in Fremont,
California. By the 1997 PCCs
in Hawaii, the Philippine
Mixed Team has advanced to
the Second Place.
But the players have for
many years held this dream
of participating in the World
Championships-the
'Olympics' of underwater
hockey. In June of 1998, the
Men's and Women's Teams
excitedly shared the pool
with the best of the best from
14 countries all over the
globe. The PUHC has since
then participated in the 2000
PCCs and over the years,
some Filipino players individually joined the PCCs as
part of a team composed of
other players from different
countries.
The Sport
Underwater hockey is a very
fast moving game that quickly builds swimming and free
diving capability. It is played
on the bottom of a swimming
pool by two teams of six.
Players wear fins, mask,
snorkel, a protective glove,
ear guards and headgear.
Success (scoring) ultimately
depends on teamwork, since
no single person can hold
their breath that long.
Underwater hockey is a game
of teamwork and strategy.
Each team will try to out
swim, duck their opponent
and guide a 3-pound lead
puck towards a goal, an untended 10-foot metal goal
post lying at the swimming
pool floor. And you do all of
these while holding your
breath.
Though speed is an advantage, it does not necessarily equate to a win. Newbie players usually rely on
speed but as you play longer,
you realize it's more important to keep puck possession, timing and being able to
outsmart your opponent.
This is a sport dedicated primarily to having fun in the
water. Anyone can play very
effectively, and all those willing to try are welcome. Typically, members come from
different areas of sports such
as divers, mountaineers, rowing teams, triathletes, swimmers and other sports enthusiasts-wannabe. Underwater
hockey in the Philippines includes people of all ages &
shapes. Underwater hockey
is played 4 times a week
(Tuesdays, Thursdays and
weekends) in Ultra, La Salle
Greenhills, Manila Polo Club
and Philippine Army Pool.
Every year, the club hosts
different tournaments like
December Balikbayan tournaments, quarterly batch
graduation tournaments, anniversary tournaments; and
other fun activities like November Halloween Race,
Christmas parties, Summer
Outings and their planned
triathlon to motivate members, enlarge the community
and celebrate the love of the
sport. By offering these
events, they have been able
to enrich PUHC and keep the
love of the sport alive by

Directed by Filipina-American Ramona Diaz, "Don’t Stop Believin':
Everyman's Journey" received the

the lead singer of the American
rock band Journey.
It was in 2007 when Journey first
contacted the Filipino singer, after
seeing his performances of the
band's hits uploaded on the videosharing site YouTube.
In April last year, "Don't Stop Believin'" premiered at the Tribeca
Film Festival in New York.
Diaz, in an earlier interview, said a

When building a house, you always start with a solid foundation. It makes sense to do
the same when building a financial plan.
We can’t always predict or prevent difficulties in our lives, but we can plan for the unexpected. When building a financial plan, it’s important to first take care of the “noncontrollable events.”
You can take steps towards having good health or a long life, but you are never completely in control. Most people have recognized the value of life insurance. It’s just as
important to recognize the value of health insurance.
If you became seriously ill, what would happen? How would your family cope? What
would happen to your finances?
You may assume that you are adequately covered by the government or through your
employer. However, here are a few questions you should consider:




If you have disability insurance coverage, what portion of your pre-disability income
would be replaced if you were unable to work?
What can you do to protect yourself?
More health insurance solutions are now available to complement traditional insurance
benefits and protect against a wider variety of risks.
Personal health insurance can fill gaps for individuals who don’t have coverage
through their place of employment, or for small business owners.
Critical illness insurance gives survivors of life-threatening conditions (such as
cancer, heart attack or stroke) a one-time cash payment that they can use to
pay for financial needs arising from the illness. Whether the money is used to
top up disability benefits or to fund treatment, the benefit can alleviate financial
worries so they can concentrate on recovery.
Long term care insurance provides an income benefit to individuals who have lost
the ability to care for themselves as a result of illness, injury, or deteriorated
mental abilities. Coverage amounts aren’t linked to earnings and the benefit
doesn’t end at any particular age. This type of insurance allows individuals to
choose the amount and type of care they want to receive without depleting retirement savings.
What if you’re self-employed? How would you replace lost income?
Health insurance and risk management
How would you pay for necessary care (e.g. therapy, home care or assistive devices) beyond what the government provides?
Risk management is an important part of your overall financial plan. Find out what your options are by contacting me today. Then you can be assured that your plan is built on a solid
foundation of informed decisions.
If you leave your job or you retire, what coverage do you have in case you become
ill and need care?

Why Healthy Eating? Why
Wealth Creation?
Some things that can create
health and well-being have
been on earth for thousands
of years. One of these great
little gems and wonders of
the world is "Bamboo"
which you can incorporate
into your daily lifestyle and
is of great benefit to your
dietary system. This traditional forest vegetable has
been around for 2,500 years
and is not only delicious but
also very rich in nutrients
and ranks among the five
most popular healthcare
foods in the world today.
Modern research finds that
bamboo shoots have a number of medicinal benefits
from cancer prevention and
weight loss to improving
appetite and digestion. It is
also very low in sugar content. Making bamboo a regular part of your diet can effectively reduce or eliminate
free radicals that can produce dangerous carcinogens.
So please take a good long
look at this wonder food for
your long-term future health
and all the benefits it has to
offer.
Health
produces
Wealth. The healthier you
are, the more energy you
have, and the easier it is to
create a sound financial future.
Everyone knows healthy
eating is the right thing to
do. But we do not do it and
do we know exactly why?
Some things such as weight
loss and more energy show
up right away as soon as we
begin any program. Others
or most of the great benefits
will show up as we grow
older.
I firmly believe God has put
enough food on earth to
make us healthy bot physically and mentally. Some
foods can make us feel full,
However, if your eating habits are terrible for that same
period of time. Your money
will not be of much use to
you for your enjoyment.
Most of it will be spent to-

with their children, Gabriel(6) and Abigail(3).
but also those same foods
can contribute to us being
depressed also.
Eating healthy when we are
young is much the same as
saving for your retirement.
If you make a plan to save
for your financial well being
you should also make a plan
to invest in your physical
well-being. You can save,
invest and make a fortune
over a 40 or 50-year period.
wards your medical bills and
support that goes along with
not being healthy.
Your health is the single
most important aspect of
your mobility and enjoyment in your eventual retirement "Golden Years".
You will learn in the book
that the secret is to have a
plan. Like any endeavour in
life it must begin with a
plan. For a failure to plan is
a sure plan to fail. Anyone
with a plan can secure his or
her financial future. You will
read how Desire, Persistence, Enthusiasm and a
positive Attitude will carry
you and your children to
financial freedom in your
lifetime.
If you are sitting there saying, "I can't do this" you are
right. If you are saying, "YES!
I can do this" you are also
right. You see the answer
lies with you. When people
ask me "What's the magic in
this?" I tell them all the
same thing, "the MAGIC is in
YOU. The MAGIC lies in each
and everyone of YOU" you
simply have to reach down
inside yourself and pull it
out for the entire world to
see.
Your road to financial freedom can be simple and painless. Most people on earth
who retire in comfort did
not come from any great
wealth. They created a plan
when they were young and
stuck with it. Slow but sure.
And that my friends is the
key to your financial success." (Vincent Villanis)

MANILA, Philippines – Tony

entertainment editor Ricky

actress Anne Hathaway.
Have you ever experience to

While saying she cannot

explained that based on her
own experience during
press junkets, she has been
trained “to expect all kinds

“You get a lot of the same
questions, and by the end of
the day, the brain is so… for

Alex Vergara which was
published in his personal
blog, In the Wee Small

In Lo’s interview with Hathaway, the entertainment
columnist asked the actress
about her weight loss for the
movie: "You lost 25 pounds
for Fantine. How did you do
it, and how did you gain it
back?"
At first laughing, Hathaway
said, "I'd rather not talk
about the weight loss,
please."
Lo also asked her, "For
somebody who is perceived
to live a life of luxury and
privilege, how are you able
to identify with Fantine?
To which Hathaway answered, "That's a very personal question."
“Everyone sees things from
his or her own unique perspective. But I can think of a
bazillion ways to answer the
question, ‘How did you lose
25 pounds in 5 weeks,’ if
only for the benefit of entertaining myself,” Salonga added.
In Lo’s interview, Hathaway
was all praises for Salonga,
who played Fantine on
Broadway,
saying
she
adores the Filipina singer
and she hopes to meet her
one day.
Later in the interview, Lo
asked Hathaway again on
what she would want to tell
Salonga. Hathaway pleasantly declined: "We've already
talked about Lea."
This led some netizens to
view that interview as
"awkward" and "painful to
watch."
But Salonga noted that interviews are also about how
questions are asked.
Citing The Filipino Channel’s
resident film critic Manny
the Movie Guy’s interview
with Hathaway, Salonga
said his delivery “totally relaxed and lightened the atmosphere.”

Maricel Out, Gerald Stays On Soap After Scuffle

MANILA, Philippines — Due

Maricel Soriano will no
longer work together on the
upcoming series, “Bukas Na

riano have agreed that Maricel will no longer be part of
the cast. The teleserye starring Gerald Anderson will

It was earlier reported that
the two Kapamilya contract

had
a
"misunderstanding" during
the soap's first taping day
on Jan. 14 at Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon
City.
Unverified reports have it
that the Diamond Star allegedly blew her top over
Gerald's acting that supposedly caused the delay of the
taping. The "unfortunate
incident" was said to have
made Gerald cry.
This was announced by ABS
-CBN's Corporate Communications Head Bong Osorio
through an official statement, released on the night
of Jan. 21. It read: “Due to
the unfortunate incident
between Gerald Anderson
and Maricel Soriano that
transpired on the first taping day of 'Bukas Na Lang

Gerald's management, Star
Magic, released its official
statement on Jan. 22 in support of their 23-year-old
homegrown talent:
"Star Magic has the utmost
confidence not only in Gerald Anderson’s exceptional
ability as an actor, but also
in his unassailable personal
character and professional
behavior. The incidents that
led to the removal of Maricel from Gerald’s latest
telenovela were not provoked or instigated by Gerald in any manner."
Neither Maricel nor her
management team, Viva
Artists Agency (VAA), has
issued a statement on the
matter as of this writing.
"Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin" was supposed to be
Maricel's TV comeback project with ABS-CBN (her

In his past interviews, Gerald expressed excitement

si Ms. Maricel ‘yan. Alam ko
madami akong matututunan
sa kanya,” he said.
Dawn Zulueta will reportedly replace Maricel as

New Year. New Beginnings “...that will bring us back to DO”
Welcome 2013! I am back to “DO” as I get reminded of the tune and lyrics of a ditty in my all-time favourite movie, the Sound of Music. This made me ponder on the note, “RE,” , triggering a few keywords
and tips flowing from the crevices of my brain, to survive another year: REview. REflect. RElease yourself from unpleasantness. REcharge. REarrange. REfresh. REvitalize. REjuvenate. REbuild. REpeat
things that make you happy. RElax. DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO! Be simple. Avoid the flats. Stay away
from the sharps. Go with the flow. Don’t get stuck on that starting note, dah! Advance to the next octave. May this year bring in more Dough for all… and Lots Of Love (LOL)!

Does Bert remember that ‘the world is an apple’?
FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star)
Playwright Alberto ‘Bert’ Florentino today
The following story, reported by
Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent
Edmund Silvestre, is about a literary
giant in his twilight years who is
probably finding it (if he ever does)
difficult to remember that, to quote
the title of his best known work, the
world is an apple. He’s none other
than Alberto “Bert” S. Florentino
whose daughter Leila once played
Kim in Miss Saigon on Broadway.
of the award-winning TV drama series Balintataw in the ’60s and ’70s,
he has written 100 plays for television and cinema, and more than 50
for stage, besides having published
several collections of his own plays
and more than 70 titles by other Filipino authors.
He became a TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awardee for literature in 1960, an honor he shared
with then Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr.
(for public service). In 2008, Bert
was given a Presidential Medal of
Merit for being a distinguished literary giant.
Today,” added Edmund, “the former
UP professor is no longer writing.
He spends most of his time reading
books at Laurelhurst Village, a senior care community in Portland.”
Yes, Edmund, I agree with you that
Bert does have connections to the
world of TV, stage and movies — “A
very famous playwright who’s wellloved and respected even here in
the US, one of the smartest and most
brilliant but humblest and warmest
In an interview Edmund did for Funfare on Christmas Day, Eva said, “He
loves to buy books on sale and get
the old ones thrown by libraries.
‘Yun na lang ang kaligayahan niya sa
ngayon. He has no friends here
(Oregon) because we just moved
here and most of his surviving
friends are either in New York or
ing.”
At one point, Eva told Edmund, Bert
reportedly requested for an assisted
suicide, which is legal in Oregon, as
long as it is self-administered. But
Eva said the doctor told him he’s not
qualified to receive it since he has
Alzheimer’s which, by definition,
robs its victims of good judgment
and the capacity to understand consequences and ultimately the ability
to carry out their own deaths.
Bert’s condition has taken its toll on
the family, according to Eva, which
was aggravated by the sudden passing of one of their daughters, Sonya,
52, a poet, who was found dead in
her Manhattan apartment in November last year. The cause of death
was pneumonia.
“We all try to be strong for each other,” Eva said, “especially me. I already had quadruple bypass. I cannot die. Not now. Hindi ako puwede
mamatay because my husband
needs me. I thank God we’re holding
up well and my whole family is my
source of strength. Like this Christmas, all of our children and grandchildren are here with us. Even our
daughter Leila, who is based in Paris, flew in with her daughter Tess to
be with us again.”
the role of Kim on Broadway’s Miss
Saigon from Lea Salonga in the early
90s. The Florentinos have a fourth
daughter, Angeli, who is a social
worker in New York City.
At present, Bert is under medication
and has been seeing a psychologist
every other week.
“He’s okay as long as he taking his
medication religiously,” Eva said.
“Aside from reading, he goes to concerts and watches movies. Like the
other day, we watched the movie
Lincoln and he loved it. We talked
about the movie. He hasn’t lost cognition. He still remembers people
and events. He stays in my apartment during weekends, but it’s better that he’s in the assisted-living
facility where he is closely monitored.”
“When I talked to Bert on the phone
recently, he sounded coherent and
even talked about his illness,” said
Edmund. “He told me, ‘The doctor
told me I have Alzheimer’s...and I’m
battling this terrible depression. But
I’m aware of what’s going on around
me. I feel fine and I feel normal. I
know you...and I know all of my
friends. Just pray for me.’ I assured
Bert that I would.”

According to Edmund, Bert was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early
2012 and has been suffering from
depression ever since. “Formerly
based in New York City, the fivetime Carlos Palanca Award winner
is now residing at an assisted-living
facility in Portland, Oregon. Eva lives
in a nearby apartment and regularly
checks on him,” said Edmund.
Now 81, Bert (born on July 28,
1931) is a prolific author and playwright who shot to fame in the
1950s with his work, The World is

plays in the Philippines. It also gave
him his first Palanca Award in 1954

Eva is herself a writer, art curator
and retired university professor.
The couple relocated to Portland to
be close to their daughter Lisa, a
voice teacher who has a private studio there.
Eva recalled that Bert’s depression
set in when his doctor informed him
he’s in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis was a result of
a medical test after Bert got lost
twice and couldn’t find his way
home from his regular trip to a coffee shop.
“Bert couldn’t accept the fact that he
has Alzheimer’s which he knows is a
progressive disease that has no
cure,” shared Eva. “He used to be so
good at computers but he couldn’t
write anymore and his depression
only worsened. He started acting
strange and even became suicidal,

inside the Cebu City justice hall Tuesday morning.
The gunman, 67-year-old Canadian
John Pope, fired shots inside the Marcelo Fernan Hall of Justice and initially
hit two people, identified as Dr. Rene
Rafols and his lawyer Jovian Atias.
Rafols, a pediatrician, and Atias died
inside the sala of Municipal Trial Court
in Cities (MTCC) Branch 6, where a malicious mischief case against Pope was
being heard.
After shooting Rafols and Atias, Pope
went to MTCC Branch 1 and shot Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Teresa Casino.
Senior Superintendent Mariano Natu-el
Jr., officer-in-charge of Cebu City Police,
said Pope looked for two more targets,
identified as Fiscals Oscar Capacio and
Nicolas Sellon.
Natu-el said Capacio and Sellon were
also handling the other cases against
Pope, who was sued for numerous
counts of malicious mischief, grave
threat and illegal possession of firearms.

Pope allegedly was able to bring
the gun to the justice hall building by concealing it with a newspaper clutched in his arm.
Cases vs Pope
A report by ABS-CBN News Cebu
said the feud between Rafols
and Pope had been going on for
years. At one point, an armed
Pope allegedly barged into the
house of Rafols. It was not clear,
however, how the tiff between
the two started.
The specific reason for Pope's
sudden outburst was not yet
established. However, various
journalists such as ABS-CBN Cebu's Vilma Andales said Pope
had been making rounds in various media offices to express his
frustration over the criminal
charges filed against him by his
neighbors.
Andales said Pope had once demanded that they air a story favorable to him.
Pope was allegedly hostile to his
neighbors and would sometimes
be seen brandishing his firearms.
Another report, meanwhile, said
a local court had issued a deportation order against Pope, but
the Bureau of Immigration has
yet to implement it.
Due to the shooting, all court
proceedings in the hall of justice
have been suspended.
The Supreme Court Public Information Office said Chief Justice
Maria Lourdes Sereno has sent
Court Administrator Midas
Marquez to Cebu to investigate
the shooting incident. With Radio DZMM; Vilma Andales and
