According to reports, the Philippines is now a “ new emerging Tiger “ thanks to its steady and credible climb in the world’s economic lad- der. It is now Asia’s new financial showcase, not the previously embarrassing reputation as the “basket case “ of the region. A report from ABS-CBN News Palawan’s Edinel Magtibay said water is already seeping into the minesweeper, which supposedly initially damaged at least 10 meters of the coral reefs. USS Guardian: Aground in restricted waters BUT...US Navy expresses regret for Tubbataha incident MANILA, Philippines – A commander of the United States Navy on Monday expressed regret for the grounding of the USS Guardian last week, which damaged the protected Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea. In a statement, U.S. 7th Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Scott Swift said he “greatly regret(s) any damage this incident has caused to the Tubbataha Reef.” The USS Guardian had come from a port call in Subic Bay and was on its way to Indonesia when it ran aground the Tubbataha Reef early morning Thursday. At least 10 meters of the coral reef have been damaged. “We know the significance of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and its importance as a World heritage Site. Its protection is vital, and we take seriously our obligations to protect and preserve the maritime environment,” Swift said. continue to work with the Philippine government to assess the extent of the damage to reef and the surrounding marine environment caused by the grounding,” the U.S. Navy said. Meanwhile, an assessment team from the U.S. Navy has already arrived in Palawan to work on the extraction of the USS Guardian from the Tubbataha Reef. Lt. Commander Ralph Kris Hooper, public affairs officer of the U.S. 7th Fleet, said the extraction team includes engineers, divers, and other essential personnel. Filipino lawmakers have begun questioning the U.S. warship’s presence in Philippine waters. Sen. Francis Escudero, chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, is asking if the ship had authorized access. Swift said Rear Adm. Thomas Carney will take over as the on-scene commander on January 21 to oversee the Guardian recovery operations. “Were we informed of its presence in our territory? Why can’t we have official word from concerned authorities about the official status of the ship in our waters?” Escudero asked. Carney, the Commander of Logistics Group in Western Pacific, will embark the destroyer USS Mustin. Along with other US Navy vessels, the USS Mustin “is focused on preventing any further environmental damage to the reef and surrounding marine environment.” Sen. Loren Legarda, meanwhile, wants the Presidential Commission on the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Philippine Coast Guard to explain why the USS Guardian was in the waters near the Tubbataha Reef, which are considered a “no navigation area.” The U.S. Navy said that there has been no change on the Guardian’s condition and there are no traces of an oil slick in the area. “When the Guardian is safely recovered by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. government will UNESCO declared the Tubbataha Reef a World Heritage Site in 1993. It covers 130,028 hectares and is home to thousands of marine species. With a report from ANC and The Philippine Star. The Palawan government said it will ask the United States Navy to pay for the damages. Palawan Governor Abraham Kahlil Mitra and the Protected Area Management Board said it will take 20 to 100 years to fix the damaged reefs, a marine sanctuary southeast of the province. United States authorities earlier said an inaccurate navigation chart data has led to the grounding of the minesweeper. A statement from the Pacific Fleet public affairs indicated that, “the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) today (January 19) provided preliminary findings of a review on Digital Nautical Charts (DNC) that contain inaccurate navigation data and may have been a factor in the Guardian grounding that occurred in the Sulu Sea on Jan. 17.” Malacanang said, however, it will await a final investigation before it will disclose the government’s next move. In an interview with radio dzRB, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said “it will be prudent to wait for the results of the investigation that will be conducted by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of National Defense, etc.” ABS-CBNnews.com Busy sked for PNoy at Davos forum MANILA, Philippines President Aquino has at least 10 engagements when he attends the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland this week – the first time he is attending the international gathering since he assumed office in June 2010. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that aside from those engagements, Aquino may have “pull aside” or “small chat” meetings with world and business leaders. “The 10 events consist of events that are sponsored by the WEF itself, while the others are hosted by private companies and other global economic leaders who will be meeting with the President,” Valte said over state-run dzRB radio yesterday. Aquino is to speak on “Partnering Against Corruption Initiative” at the WEF, where he is expected to share anticorruption measures. As 2012 was nearing its end in December, we were shocked by the grim news of a shooting rampage in Newport town, Connecticut that claimed the lives of 26 persons including 20 kindergarten kids. (Continued from page 1) Hope and Faith for 2013 on transparency or openness and the hallmark “matuwid na Daan “ (the right path)is steering the country to unprecedented heights. Exorcising the age-old corruption in the bureaucracy and in the way of life among Filipinos is now the priority of the new administration of President Noynoy Aquino, the heir of democracy icons former president Corazon C.Aquino and martyred senator Benigno “Ninoy “Aquino. In one of his speeches before foreign business moguls and investors, he declared that the Philippines “ is now open for business “. Indeed, there is proof or indications of all these. The more than a million OFWs or Overseas Filipino Workers, contribute at least a conservative $18 billion to the national economy yearly, spurring a frenzy of spending among their families and pouring needed money in the local businesses . The proliferation and con- struction of more condos, big commercial malls, casinos that rivals the likes of Macau if not Las Vegas are proof of the new found status of the country as an emerging Asian financial hub. The peso is experiencing a strong showing against the US dollar in an all time record of P40 pesos to $1.00 US dollar whereas before it was hovering between P45-P46. But of course much has to be done. There must be change in the politics of old “trapos “to a new responsive and action oriented discipline; a decent life for most Filipinos in the bottom rung of the societal strata while at the same time, the issues of poverty and unemployment must be given high priority. There is therefore much hope yet a lot work to be done. But as million of devotees of the Black Nazarene that line up the annual “translacion “ (a reenactment of the transfer of the original icon from its origin to its present location at the Quiapo Basilica) all declare in their affirmation, that the Filipinos never waned in their Faith and Hope in their God and Country. The lone shooter, a disturbed and mentally unstable kid, used a very powerful assault rifle to mow down his victims. In Manila suburb of Caloocan city, Stephanie Nicole Ella, suddenly collapsed while watching the traditional New Year’s eve fireworks, a victim of a stray .45 caliber bullet that landed on her head causing her death days later. There were many cases of stray bullet victims during that new year’s eve from guns that should not have been fired in the first place but as it happens year in and out, these senseless criminals chose to do so out of thrill or plain “yabang” grandstanding) to impress friends. Four days later on January 4, 2013, the new year was once again shattered by another news of a massacre in Kawit, Cavite when a drugcrazed former village official went from house to house firing at random at everyone in sight including his own goddaughter. The carnage claimed the lives of eight persons including the gunman himself who was gunned down by responding police officers. The following week, 13 people, including three police and military officers were allegedly ambushed in an isolated highway checkpoint in Atimonan, Quezon manned by police and military authorities. However, initial investigations showed it was not an encounter between the police and suspected criminal elements but reportedly a result of a conflict of interest in gambling or Jueteng (illegal numbers game) between the two groups. The victims were all peppered with bullets with some shot at close range in the head. The death of Nicole has triggered a massive call for stricter gun control laws if not a total gun in the Philippines. In the US, President Obama has announced measures to curb or control gun ownership. Guns in the wrong hands, improper handling or lack of training are some of the reasons why lives are lost unnecessarily. It may be or may not be a problem of gun or the socalled “culture of guns“ to be blamed for all these sad episodes but it has got to stop. For instance, the Philippines has at least 1 million loose firearms which means potentially, these can be used in criminal activities. Additionally, there are also the same number of licensed firearms in the hands of civilians but these number can be easily traced and checked. In America, the ownership of gun is guaranteed by the constitution. This is based For ADVERTISING INQUIRIES, 647 718-1360 But in the Philippines, the criminals have become so sophisticated in terms of firearms that sometimes, the police are hamstrung to stop them while gun ownership is so rigid and expensive that ordinary citizens are left to fend for themselves against bad elements. In the light of all these, should there be a gun ban, a regulated gun control or regulated gun ownership? ****** NOW THE GOOD NEWS: The Philippines has been termed as the economic success story of the year 2012 and for this year might make it as the newest “economic Tiger” of Asia if trends continue. Proof of this recognition is word that President Noynoy Aquino will be the main speaker at the Davos, Switzerland World Economic Forum which is to be attended by major world economic companies, organizations and governments. The forum takes place January 23-27 and is a series of meetings among organizations and governments to tackle important economic world issues. According to reports, the Philippines was 2012’s world’s 44th largest economy but “ if current trends hold, it could jump to 16th place by the year 2050 “. The need to make those resolutions have been tugging at our hearts for months, and for some the last few weeks. Like, taking more time to take care of ourselves. More exercise. Less food. There’s that short fuse that gave everybody in the family their “on-edge” Christmas. Whatever the resolution, we’ve spent a lot of time pondering what to do. Pondering…our Gospel today shares with us that Mary pondered in her heart all that had taken place. She treasured and pondered all that had taken place in those days. The birth of her child…the shepherds’ tale of angels proclaiming to them the good news that their Saviour had been born...the Messiah...the Lord. Imagine hearing these definitions of your child being told to you. It would leave us speechless. Mary took it all in and treasures all these things and ponders them in her heart. Mary is just an ordinary woman, living in ordinary times. Very similar times as today, with all its good and bad. She is an ordinary human being whom God reached out to, in order to embrace humanity. She may be an ordinary person, but she did an extraordinary thing. Both Matthew and Luke open their Gospels celebrating how God visits his people in the birth of Jesus. Mary, a young Jewish girl is chosen to be the mother of the Son of God. There is no suggestion that Mary is longing and praying for a child of her own. There is no suggestion that Mary, like Sarah and Elizabeth, is old and barren. Mary is young and a virgin. But just as old age and being barren are no barriers to the plan of God, neither is youth or virginity. For as we hear in the story, nothing is impossible for God. In being the mother of Jesus, Mary does the same things as any mother, nurturing within her womb the great development of a little child taking shape. Another human being is formed in the mother’s body, but the mother can never keep the child within her. But Motherhood not only means having a baby, but also letting Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4: 4-7; Luke 2:16-21 go of the baby and watch them grow to adulthood. That is something which Mary had to do, not only to nurture Jesus in his growing, but eventually let him go his way to make a future for himself a future in line with his father’s will. Jesus is Mary’s son. He is her own, but not her own. He belongs to her, but also to many. Mary has to do what God, the Father did let go of his Son. And that is what Mary does. She does not anxiously clutch Jesus to herself, but gives him to us. She asks us to do what she does. Share Jesus with everyone. Give Him as good news of life to others. Mary is the first among us, human beings, who accepted the word of God in her life and received Jesus. She is the first Christian, the First Disciple. As we gather today, on this beginning of the new year, we turn to Mary as our mother, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, mindful of her intercession for us and for our world. Mary’s pondering of the events of those days is an image for us that might bring us closer and deeper into our need to make resolutions as this year begins. She treasured the gift of God resting in her arms. A mystery indeed. But something as real as you and me. Ponder this year the mystery of who you are. Who Christ is for you this year. Ponder the great mystery of how you and I are connected, how we connect with our brothers and sisters around us. Perhaps one of our resolutions to ponder is to find time to ponder to be in God’s presence for a little bit each day and engage ourselves in conversation with Jesus discovering, as the Shepherds, the meaning of who he is now for you, as Messiah and Lord. the hopes of this coming year, a year for peace, let’s not dwell on the past, God doesn’t. Let’s look forward to the peace that God continues to bring to birth in us, just as God did through Mary, who so graciously and lovingly raised up a son who calls each one of us his sisters and brothers to live a life of grace. National Shrine of our Mother of Perpetual Help St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 131 McCaul St, Toronto Mary is our model of acceptance and of being used by the Lord for the good of humanity and the world. How can we be the same. This (January 1st) is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace; a day where we join our Christian brothers and sisters in asking God to grant peace into our hearts and the hearts of all people. (416) 598-3269 Our salvation has come among us to free us from sin and call us to life. Let us pray for peace to reign once more. Both teams competed hard, and had a great deal of fun.” Neighborhood Resource Officer Const. Individuals and groups considered "social entrepreneurs" are set to converge in Davao City on Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 for "Liwanag: World Festival on Creativity and Sustainability." "Never before has such a large array of inspiring and dynamic speakers and artists been brought together in one event," said festival director and former Presidential aspirant Nicanor Perlas. These include Gawad Kalinga founcer Tony Meloto, businesswoman and environment advocate Gina Lopez as well as Occupy Wall Street advocate Seth Jordan. Several other leaders from non-government, scientific, artist, business and media organizations both from the Philippines and abroad will also be featured in the festival. "The Philippines and the world have the talent and the smarts to create a world of promise, excitement, and prosperity," Perlas said. This, as he noted that Liwanag will showcase "brilliant, heart-centered initiatives in all dimensions of sustainability: ecological, economic, cultural, political, societal, human, and spiritual." The festival's name "liwanag" is the Filipino word for "light." Contrasting this with "ningning", which means "glitter" or "false light," festival organizers noted that Filipino heroes understand "the importance of creating a new nation on the basis of profound inner change." "'[L]iwanag" can be interpreted to mean a profound form of creativity. Without creativity, sustainability would not be possible," they said on the festival website. It was upon invitation that we met with the very amiable founders and directors of NASIT, Leila Chong, RN and Linda Ng, RN (see photo), who gave us a tour of the school and happily introduced us to the dynamic personalities from the different community agencies who were present during our visit. We immediately recognized how this particular school stood out amongst the other private career centres in Toronto which we had visited in the past. Several reasons played out in our inquiring minds, but what really became significant are facts that we discovered during our tour of the school and these are, to name a few are, first, NASIT's dynamic team of school directors and very knowledgeable teaching staff; secondly, a strong multicultural makeup of its student body; thirdly, the school's well-equipped and spacious classrooms which give each student enough private space, among others. It would help to run this message he sent to the Inquirer last Dec. 4, four day’s before Pacquiao fourth encounter with Marquez. “If Manny will be extremely aggressive as they plan to do, he might get knocked down, or even stopped. Marquez has mastered Manny’s style, kabisado na.” He added: “In each of their last three fights, Marquez continued to improve, while Pacquiao declined. If we are to graph the performance, I expect Marquez to have a decision or late KO. Especially now when Manny’s heart is not for boxing anymore.” this led to the reported matchup between the “Filipino Flash” and Rigondeaux. Donaire is coming off a spectacular third-round knockout over Mexican superstar Jorge Arce last December. Rigondeaux, meanwhile, won a unanimous decision over Roberto Marroquin last September. ABS-CBNnews.com *** Andales put $500 on underdog Marquez and collected $1,200. He continued to explain: “If you noticed Marquez was the only pure boxer among Manny’s opponents, all the others were pure sluggers who stood in front and were either knocked out or retired by Manny.” Anyway, after his latest text message, Andales was asked whether he noticed Pacquiao could still hit hardbut could no longer take a big punch. “Well, they can do something about that,” he said. How? “They should take out Freddie Roach or they could give him an assistant who can teach Pacquiao decent defense.” Underwater Hockey: Philippines’ Fastest Growing Water Sport In 1979, the president of a dive shop in Manila named Dive Asia, read an article about underwater hockey in a World Underwater Federation (CMAS) magazine. After inquiring and receiving information about game rules and equipment, their first underwater game was held in the shop's own pool in 1980. It reached the dive club at the University of the Philippines, known as the U.P. Divers were they became the first to find a regular venue for the scrimmage games. They first played at Quezon City Sports Club swimming pool every Tuesday night from 1984 to 1997. By 1990, these players finally incorporated themselves into the Philippine Underwater Hockey Club. Since then, it has evolved to become the Philippine Underwater Hockey Confederation (PUHC) and is recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Confederation Mondiale des Activites Subaquatiques (World Underwater Federation). Clubs and International Tournaments Exposure was not limited to Metro Manila. The group's enthusiasm for underwater hockey has brought some PUHC members to places like Cebu, Angeles, Bacolod and Quezon. By October 1998, the first PUHC Affiliate, the Bacolod Underwater Hockey Team was inducted into the PUHC. And the first game of the Davao Underwater Hockey Club was held in November 2002. A PUHC member, Joey Carpio helped built the Singapore club. PUHC try to extend its networks by building more clubs like the Cebu Underwater Hockey Club last year and soon their very own club based in Australia. With some of the PUHC members playing in the United States, Singapore and Australia teams, it has brought its local team to compete in international competition. Enthusiasm for underwater hockey inevitably brought the PUHC to the Pacific Coast Championships in Canada, an international competition for the first time in 1995. The group returned the following year to have its Mixed Division entry streak to a remarkable Fourth Place finish amidst a dozen other teams at the 1996 PCCs in Fremont, California. By the 1997 PCCs in Hawaii, the Philippine Mixed Team has advanced to the Second Place. But the players have for many years held this dream of participating in the World Championships-the 'Olympics' of underwater hockey. In June of 1998, the Men's and Women's Teams excitedly shared the pool with the best of the best from 14 countries all over the globe. The PUHC has since then participated in the 2000 PCCs and over the years, some Filipino players individually joined the PCCs as part of a team composed of other players from different countries. The Sport Underwater hockey is a very fast moving game that quickly builds swimming and free diving capability. It is played on the bottom of a swimming pool by two teams of six. Players wear fins, mask, snorkel, a protective glove, ear guards and headgear. Success (scoring) ultimately depends on teamwork, since no single person can hold their breath that long. Underwater hockey is a game of teamwork and strategy. Each team will try to out swim, duck their opponent and guide a 3-pound lead puck towards a goal, an untended 10-foot metal goal post lying at the swimming pool floor. And you do all of these while holding your breath. Though speed is an advantage, it does not necessarily equate to a win. Newbie players usually rely on speed but as you play longer, you realize it's more important to keep puck possession, timing and being able to outsmart your opponent. This is a sport dedicated primarily to having fun in the water. Anyone can play very effectively, and all those willing to try are welcome. Typically, members come from different areas of sports such as divers, mountaineers, rowing teams, triathletes, swimmers and other sports enthusiasts-wannabe. Underwater hockey in the Philippines includes people of all ages & shapes. Underwater hockey is played 4 times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends) in Ultra, La Salle Greenhills, Manila Polo Club and Philippine Army Pool. Every year, the club hosts different tournaments like December Balikbayan tournaments, quarterly batch graduation tournaments, anniversary tournaments; and other fun activities like November Halloween Race, Christmas parties, Summer Outings and their planned triathlon to motivate members, enlarge the community and celebrate the love of the sport. By offering these events, they have been able to enrich PUHC and keep the love of the sport alive by For more information, please visit www.puhc.com.ph. It makes sense to do the same when building a financial plan. We can’t always predict or prevent difficulties in our lives, but we can plan for the unexpected. When building a financial plan, it’s important to first take care of the “noncontrollable events.” You can take steps towards having good health or a long life, but you are never completely in control. Most people have recognized the value of life insurance. It’s just as important to recognize the value of health insurance. If you became seriously ill, what would happen? How would your family cope? What would happen to your finances? You may assume that you are adequately covered by the government or through your employer. However, here are a few questions you should consider: If you have disability insurance coverage, what portion of your pre-disability income would be replaced if you were unable to work? What can you do to protect yourself? More health insurance solutions are now available to complement traditional insurance benefits and protect against a wider variety of risks. Personal health insurance can fill gaps for individuals who don’t have coverage through their place of employment, or for small business owners. Critical illness insurance gives survivors of life-threatening conditions (such as cancer, heart attack or stroke) a one-time cash payment that they can use to pay for financial needs arising from the illness. Whether the money is used to top up disability benefits or to fund treatment, the benefit can alleviate financial worries so they can concentrate on recovery. Long term care insurance provides an income benefit to individuals who have lost the ability to care for themselves as a result of illness, injury, or deteriorated mental abilities. Coverage amounts aren’t linked to earnings and the benefit doesn’t end at any particular age. This type of insurance allows individuals to choose the amount and type of care they want to receive without depleting retirement savings. What if you’re self-employed? How would you replace lost income? Health insurance and risk management How would you pay for necessary care (e.g. therapy, home care or assistive devices) beyond what the government provides? Risk management is an important part of your overall financial plan. Find out what your options are by contacting me today. Then you can be assured that your plan is built on a solid foundation of informed decisions. If you leave your job or you retire, what coverage do you have in case you become ill and need care? Martin Nievera and Pops Concert At the CNE concert with Rico J. Puno JANUARY 2013 25 ENTERTAINMENT Does Bert remember that ‘the world is an apple’? FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) Playwright Alberto ‘Bert’ Florentino today The following story, reported by Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre, is about a literary giant in his twilight years who is probably finding it (if he ever does) difficult to remember that, to quote the title of his best known work, the world is an apple. He’s none other than Alberto “Bert” S. Florentino whose daughter Leila once played Kim in Miss Saigon on Broadway. of the award-winning TV drama series Balintataw in the ’60s and ’70s, he has written 100 plays for television and cinema, and more than 50 for stage, besides having published several collections of his own plays and more than 70 titles by other Filipino authors. He became a TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awardee for literature in 1960, an honor he shared with then Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. (for public service). In 2008, Bert was given a Presidential Medal of Merit for being a distinguished literary giant. Today,” added Edmund, “the former UP professor is no longer writing. He spends most of his time reading books at Laurelhurst Village, a senior care community in Portland.” Yes, Edmund, I agree with you that Bert does have connections to the world of TV, stage and movies — “A very famous playwright who’s wellloved and respected even here in the US, one of the smartest and most brilliant but humblest and warmest In an interview Edmund did for Funfare on Christmas Day, Eva said, “He loves to buy books on sale and get the old ones thrown by libraries. ‘Yun na lang ang kaligayahan niya sa ngayon. He has no friends here (Oregon) because we just moved here and most of his surviving friends are either in New York or ing.” At one point, Eva told Edmund, Bert reportedly requested for an assisted suicide, which is legal in Oregon, as long as it is self-administered. But Eva said the doctor told him he’s not qualified to receive it since he has Alzheimer’s which, by definition, robs its victims of good judgment and the capacity to understand consequences and ultimately the ability to carry out their own deaths. Bert’s condition has taken its toll on the family, according to Eva, which was aggravated by the sudden passing of one of their daughters, Sonya, 52, a poet, who was found dead in her Manhattan apartment in November last year. The cause of death was pneumonia. “We all try to be strong for each other,” Eva said, “especially me. I already had quadruple bypass. I cannot die. Not now. Hindi ako puwede mamatay because my husband needs me. I thank God we’re holding up well and my whole family is my source of strength. Like this Christmas, all of our children and grandchildren are here with us. Even our daughter Leila, who is based in Paris, flew in with her daughter Tess to be with us again.” the role of Kim on Broadway’s Miss Saigon from Lea Salonga in the early 90s. The Florentinos have a fourth daughter, Angeli, who is a social worker in New York City. At present, Bert is under medication and has been seeing a psychologist every other week. “He’s okay as long as he taking his medication religiously,” Eva said. “Aside from reading, he goes to concerts and watches movies. Like the other day, we watched the movie Lincoln and he loved it. We talked about the movie. He hasn’t lost cognition. He still remembers people and events. He stays in my apartment during weekends, but it’s better that he’s in the assisted-living facility where he is closely monitored.” “When I talked to Bert on the phone recently, he sounded coherent and even talked about his illness,” said Edmund. “He told me, ‘The doctor told me I have Alzheimer’s...and I’m battling this terrible depression. But I’m aware of what’s going on around me. I feel fine and I feel normal. I know you...and I know all of my friends. Just pray for me.’ I assured Bert that I would.” Leila, now a voice teacher, took over IMMIGRATION PRACTICE Family Sponsorship Bert with his granddaughters on Christmas day: Early symptoms of Alzheimer’s (Spouse, Common-law, Conjugal - Same Sex) people I have ever met. His wife Eva San Jose is equally brilliant and down-to-earth.” According to Edmund, Bert was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2012 and has been suffering from depression ever since. “Formerly based in New York City, the fivetime Carlos Palanca Award winner is now residing at an assisted-living facility in Portland, Oregon. Eva lives in a nearby apartment and regularly checks on him,” said Edmund. Now 81, Bert (born on July 28, 1931) is a prolific author and playwright who shot to fame in the 1950s with his work, The World is an Apple, one of the most performed plays in the Philippines. It also gave him his first Palanca Award in 1954 when he was just 23. He is a contemporary of Nick Joaquin, Jose Garcia Villa and NVM Gonzalez. Also known as the main scriptwriter Temporary Visa Manila.” Eva is herself a writer, art curator and retired university professor. The couple relocated to Portland to be close to their daughter Lisa, a voice teacher who has a private studio there. Eva recalled that Bert’s depression set in when his doctor informed him he’s in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis was a result of a medical test after Bert got lost twice and couldn’t find his way home from his regular trip to a coffee shop. “Bert couldn’t accept the fact that he has Alzheimer’s which he knows is a progressive disease that has no cure,” shared Eva. “He used to be so good at computers but he couldn’t write anymore and his depression only worsened. He started acting strange and even became suicidal, threatening to jump from a build- Arlene Martirez Licensed Paralegal (Work Permit, Live-in Caregiver, Study Permit, Visitor and Extensions) Super Visa (Parents and Grandparents) Skilled Workers Humanitarian & Compassionate Investors Entrepreneurs Self Employed Provincial Nominee Program Quebec Immigration Arranged Employment Refugee, Appeals US Visitor and Investor Visa Application US Waiver Application Member, Law Society of Upper Canada OTHER AREAS OF PRACTICE www.isuc.on.ca Member—ADR Institute of Ontario FSCO - (Motor Vehicle Accidents & Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (We speak Tagalog, Bicol, Ukrainian, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Russian, Mandarin and Korean) Criminal (Summary Conviction) 301-797 Wilson Ave. Small Claims Court Toronto, ON M3K 1E4 Landloard and Tenant Board Tel: 416 398-8882 / 416 892-2916 Provincial Offences - Hightway Traffic Act Fax: 866 385-3535 Legal Name Change, Record Suspension E-mails: info@caneximmigration.com Commnisioner of Oath/Affidavits canneximmigration@rogers.com Website: ww.canneximmigration.com Private Mediation Process Server JANUARY 2013 26 Remittances hit new high in Oct BAHAY LUNDUYAN LEARNING CENTER, Brgy. Canadian kills 2, shoots self in Cebu justice hall MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – A Canadian killed 2 people and wounded an assistant prosecutor before turning the gun on himself in a shooting spree inside the Cebu City justice hall Tuesday morning. The gunman, 67-year-old Canadian John Pope, fired shots inside the Marcelo Fernan Hall of Justice and initially hit two people, identified as Dr. Rene Rafols and his lawyer Jovian Atias. Rafols, a pediatrician, and Atias died inside the sala of Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) Branch 6, where a malicious mischief case against Pope was being heard. After shooting Rafols and Atias, Pope went to MTCC Branch 1 and shot Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Teresa Casino. Senior Superintendent Mariano Natu-el Jr., officer-in-charge of Cebu City Police, said Pope looked for two more targets, identified as Fiscals Oscar Capacio and Nicolas Sellon. Natu-el said the wounded Canadian, not wanting to be caught alive, then committed suicide by shooting himself on the right temple. "Natumba yung suspek at siya ay nagpakamatay, Binaril niya rin yung sarili niya," he said. Pope succumbed to his wounds at the Cebu Doctor's Hospital. Casino, meanwhile, is set to undergo an operation at Chong Hua Hospital to remove a bullet lodged in her neck. She is now in stable condition. Pope allegedly was able to bring the gun to the justice hall building by concealing it with a newspaper clutched in his arm. Cases vs Pope A report by ABS-CBN News Cebu said the feud between Rafols and Pope had been going on for years. At one point, an armed Pope allegedly barged into the house of Rafols. It was not clear, however, how the tiff between the two started. The specific reason for Pope's sudden outburst was not yet established. However, various journalists such as ABS-CBN Cebu's Vilma Andales said Pope had been making rounds in various media offices to express his frustration over the criminal charges filed against him by his neighbors. Andales said Pope had once demanded that they air a story favorable to him. Pope was allegedly hostile to his neighbors and would sometimes be seen brandishing his firearms. Another report, meanwhile, said a local court had issued a deportation order against Pope, but the Bureau of Immigration has yet to implement it. Due to the shooting, all court proceedings in the hall of justice have been suspended. The Supreme Court Public Information Office said Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has sent Court Administrator Midas Marquez to Cebu to investigate the shooting incident.
