Senate victory for dad, Grace Poe says

MANILA - Team PNoy senatorial candidate Grace Poe is
dedicating her impending
victory to the memory of
her father, the late actor and
presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr.
Poe told ABS-CBN News that
the results of the midterm
elections surprised her.
As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, the
former Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chief was leading
in the senatorial race, ahead
of second-placed Loren Legarda by more than a million votes.

to her father who ran and
lost a hard-fought campaign
against Gloria MacapagalArroyo for the presidency in
2004.

With his victory in
the mayoral race
nearly in the bag, former President Joseph
‘Erap’ Estrada said he
feels vindicated.
Estrada is leading the race
with 288,058 votes compared to Lim’s 257,631
votes, as of 4:43 a.m, with at
least 96% of the votes canvassed.
"Si Erap kasi, para kay Grace
Poe. I'm sure iyung 3 slots
pa na iyon, kasama si Grace
Poe," Robles said.
"Parang iyung mga boto ni
Grace Poe, galing sa PNoy
team, Binay team," she added.
Poe was initially a guest
candidate of Binay's United
Nationalist Alliance until the
opposition bloc dropped
her, Loren Legarda, and
Francis Escudero because
they didn't join sorties.
Bakit Poe?
Even political analyst and
UP Vice-President for Public
Affairs Prospero "Popoy" De
Vera was surprised with
Poe's performance.
He described her numbers
as looking like "a runaway
victory."
"Malaki ang pagitan between number 1 and number 2 (in the ongoing Senate
race tally)," he told ABS-CBN
News Tuesday.
"At the rate she is going, as
high as 65% ang makukuha
niya. Mataas na mataas makukuha niya," De Vera said.
What then, made her perform well in the elections?
"Mayroon sigurong mga lugar na hindi nakuha ang
(mga) survey," De Vera explained.
"Malakas

across the board."
He partly attributed it to
Poe's late campaign surge.
"Iyung dulo ng ads niya,
kasama si Susan Roces. Baka

He said Poe's victory is
"vindication" of the death
and alleged cheating done to
her father.
"Very competent naman si
Grace Poe on her own merits. Doon sa mga debate,

number 1."

change in the country’s capital, which he
said is in “bad shape.”
Estrada said his return to public office

still trusts him after

people still have trust in me
despite all the black propaganda thrown at me during
the time that I was impeached. The people know
that I am innocent because
of the fact that we are celebrating EDSA 1 every year,
but EDSA Dos was never

Estrada arrived at the Ninoy

the proclamation.
Estrada and Lim have figured in a heated word war
since the start of the campaign, but Estrada said he
harbors no ill feelings
against Lim.
“I’m a very forgiving man. I
forgave all those who connived to remove me illegally. I’ve forgiven all of them,

MANILA, Philippines – National Artist for Theater Daisy Avellana died on Sunday
morning. She was 96.
This was announced on
Sunday by the government
in its official social media
account.
“In memoriam: Daisy H.
Avellana, National Artist for
Theater, January 26, 1917 May 12, 2013,” the Official
Gazette of the Republic of
the Philippines said in on
Twitter and Facebook.
According to the National
Commission on Culture and
the Arts (NCCA), Avellana
was born in Roxas City, Capiz on January 26, 1917.
“She has elevated legitimate
theater and dramatic arts to
a new level of excellence by
staging and performing in
breakthrough productions
of classic Filipino and foreign plays and by encouraging the establishment of
performing groups and the
professionalization of Filipino theater. Together with
her husband, National Artist
Lamberto Avellana and other artists, she co-founded
the Barangay Theatre Guild
in 1939 which paved the
way for the popularization
of theatre and dramatic arts
in the country, utilizing radio and television,” the
NCCA said on its website.
Avellana is best remembered for her portrayal of
Candida Marasigan in the
stage and film versions of
Nick Joaquin’s “Portrait of
the Artist as Filipino.”
She was declared National
Artist in 1999 .

Faster family reunification
for caregivers
On April 24th, the Toronto
Star carried on its upper fold
the story of a dying caregiver, 44-year-old Maricon Gerente, who was granted the
elusive permanent residence
status. It was reported that
it was no less than Minister
Jason Kenney who decided
to dispatch two immigration
officers to Oakville-Trafalgar
Memorial Hospital to fingerprint the unresponsive Gerente in exchange for the
landing status. The move
was unprecedented and was
said to be a direct reaction
of the receptive Minister
Kenney to the Star’s article
on the plight of Gerente and
the “tragic circumstances.”
However, Gerente’s two
daughters, Lean, 14 and
Saniel, 11, who flew in recently from the Philippines
to be at her bedside were, by
technicality, not provided
their PR status.
Reactions to the unusual
granting of PR to Gerente
was swift and varied. Caregivers and advocates took to
Facebook and immediately
started a conversation.
“Good news, but it’s half the
battle. We’ll have to deal
with the issues regarding
her children,” commented
an advocate.
“CIC should grant PR faster
for everyone and not just for
caregivers who are sick or
dying,” posted another.
In one casual private message thread, caregivers were
quick to point out the cases
of then dying nannies- Juana
Tejada and Precy Limpiadowho were also granted their
permanent residence status
through the direct intervention of Minister Kenney.
Shortly after the two were
granted their PRs, they both
succumbed to their illnesses.
Tejada died in a Toronto
hospital while Limpiado decided to spend her last days
surrounded by her mother

and siblings in the Philippines.
A commonality shared by
these three ill-fated caregivers was that they all worked
hard, sacrificed so much and
aspired for a better future
for their loved ones in Canada.
Gerente’s case, however,
highlights the all too familiar
problem faced by thousands
of caregivers who are patiently waiting for their PRs
to be granted.
Gerente came to Canada in
2006 and applied for PR status back in 2010. The years
that went by as Gerente
waited for her PR in vain
made her tragic story all the
more heart-wrenching. Gerente will not have the benefit of raising her two daughters and give them a better
life in Canada.
Hers is one extreme example of the human cost of prolonged wait times in the processing of PR applications.
This predicament resonated
with the caregivers who
gathered at Wilson Parkette
on a wintry Family Day to
plead for faster processing
of their PR applications.
“Longer wait times mean
prolonged separation between caregivers and their
families, increased financial,
mental, physical, social and
emotional
costs,”
they
stressed, as they held a giant
streamer saying, “Where art
thou my family? I miss you.
Happy Family Day.”
“Caregivers continue to suffer in silence as they continue to long for that day when
they are finally reunited
with their families in Canada. We cannot stress enough
the importance of the role of
a united family unit in building a stronger, better and
healthier Canada,” according
to the petition the caregivers

IS THE ABSENTEE VOTER PROGRAM A FAILURE?
Dismal is the word to describe absentee voters election results in the recently
concluded May 13, 2013
Philippine midterm elections. Overall, there was a
low turnout of those who
trooped to the various Overseas absentee voting centers
located in parts of North
America, South America,
Europe and Asia, with the
exception of Hongkong.
There were also zero turnout in some 26 countries
where there are only less
than 10 registered voters.
Here in Toronto, out of the
total 16,000 registered voters, only 2,000 casted their
ballots while in Vancouver,
1,159 out of the total 13,000
appeared to exercise their
right of suffrage.
Philippine officials said this
discouraging trend can be
traced to a number of reasons among them the busy
work schedules of overseas
Filipinos, their lack of
knowledge on current issues in the home country or
about their candidates..
The Overseas Absentee Voting program better known
as the Overseas Absentee
Voting Act or Republic Act
9189, also has some defects
that discourage overseas
Filipinos to avail of the program, among them the requirement to execute an
affidavit signifying to take
up residence or return to
the Philippines after three
years.
Republic Act 9189 was
passed by congress in Feb.7,
2013 or some three months
before the May 13 elections
but this was not signed into
law by President Noynoy
Aquino.
Many consular officials have
expressed surprised why
there were fewer and less
voters compared to the last
2010 Presidential Elections
when in fact, even voting by
mail was already allowed by
the system.

Jr.)” win in the 2004 Presidential election against expresident Gloria Macapagal

has defied the odds when
she surpassed the heavy
favorites like Loren Legarda
and Chiz Escudero whom
many surveys predicted
would emerge as the topnotchers.
According to political pundits and analysts, Ms. Grace
Poe’s sincerity, cool under
fire and her willingness to
face debates on any issues
catapulted her to the top of
the pack.
But the main factor was the
name of her dad which to
this day continues to weave
magic among the people.
To this day, many still believe FPJ was cheated of the
presidency in 2004 by
Mrs.Arroyo. The image of
Mrs. Arroyo apologizing on
national TV for the Garci
scandal is still fresh on people’s minds.
Garci is the commission on
election supervisor who
was accused of manipulating the votes in Mindanao in
favour of Mrs.Arroyo.
“NANA”
Two days before Mother’s
day, we said our final farewell to our mother, Hilaria
Figueroa Soriano. It was bittersweet.
Its not easy to let go but the
sweetness of the thought
that so many people have
treasured, respected and
loved my mother.even considering her their second
mom, is more than consolation for the emptiness and
pain within me.
All I will remember is the
mystique behind a mother’s
love. Growing up and joining the Boy Scouts, I told her
I need a good jacket for a
camping trip to Baguio.
I told her to ask my Dad to
buy one. She did not. Instead, she spent several
days in her “Singer “sewing
machine crafting a “franela”
jacket which she finished in
no time.
Why she made one when
my Dad can buy even four
jackets or sweaters is beyond me.
The “Franela” (a kind of
wool)jacket it turned out
when I tried it on was the
warmest and most comfortable.
Indeed, my “Nana” (as everybody called her) did not
want any jacket bought
from some department
stores. She wanted only the
best, the one jacket that
could give a son the warm
comfort only a mother’s
hand and love can give.

fare in this year’s mid-term
elections?
Here is a list of some of the
celebrity candidates who are
winning and losing in the
May 13 polls. All data are
according to the latest unofficial results from the Comelec Transparency Server.
POISED TO WIN
Herbert Bautista
Actor and incumbent mayor
Herbert Bautista is expected
to be proclaimed mayor of
Quezon City.
As early as 10 p.m. on Monday, Bautista had390,066
votes against Johnny Chang
and Henry Samonte with
38,833 votes and 17,568
votes, respectively.
As of 6:27 p.m. on Tuesday,
Bautista has 479,414 votes
compared to Chang's 46,859
votes and Samonte's 21,521
votes.
ER Ejercito
“El Presidente” lead star ER
Ejercito is poised to win in
the Laguna gubernatorial
race. Ejercito, who is running under the United Nationalist
Alliance,
had
413,552 votes as of 6:26
p.m., with 74.78% of election returns processed.
His opponent, Edgar San
Luis of the Liberal Party, had
355,682 votes.
Jinkee Pacquiao
Jinkee Pacquiao, the wife of
boxing champ and congressman Manny Pacquiao, is set
to be proclaimed the winner
of the vice-gubernatorial
race in Sarangani province
as her opponent conceded
right after the start of the
canvassing of votes.
She got 125,889 votes with
90.89% of election returns
processed as of 6:26 p.m.,
against Eleanor Saguigit’s
25,977 votes and Jose Lorde
Villamor's 4,801 votes.
Jinkee’s husband, Manny, is
expected to win the congressional seat in the lone district of Sarangani after running unopposed.

Actress and re-electionist
governor Vilma Santos is
cruising to a landslide win in
Batangas province. As of
6:26 p.m. on Tuesday, Santos got 659,456 votes
against Marcos Mandanas’
41,650 votes.
Praxedes Bustamante, an
independent candidate, only
received 4,280 votes.
TRAILING
AHEAD
Actor Richard Gomez, who is
running under the Liberal
Party, is trailing his rival in
the Ormoc City mayoral
race. The “Walang Hanggan”
star had 32,309 votes as of
6:25 p.m., with 84.05% of
election returns processed.
Independent candidate Edward Codilla is slightly
ahead with 33,767 votes.
Aga Muhlach
Actor and Liberal Party bet
Aga Muhlach has a slim
lead (51,731 votes) over the
NPC’s Wimpy Fuentebella
(48,804 votes) as of 6:27
The two are in the congressional race for the fourth
district of Camarines Sur
province.
Lucy Torres
Actor Jolo Revilla of Lakas is
poised to win the vicegubernatorial race in Cavite
over Ronaldo Jay Lacson of
the Liberal Party.
As of 6:26 p.m. on Tuesday,
Revilla
got
394,147
votes
against
Lacson’s
231,105 votes. Recto Cantimbuhan, an independent
candidate, received 97,166
votes.

Television host and actress
Lucy Torres is poised to return as congresswoman of
the fourth district of Leyte
with 97,583 votes against
Eric Codilla of Lakas with
71,488 votes as of 6:25 p.m.,
with 85.24% of election returns processed.
Last March, the Supreme
Court ruled to oust Torres as
Leyte’s fourth district representative after substituting
for her husband, actor Richard Gomez, who failed to
sufficiently establish residency in Ormoc City.

Liberal Party, had 28,997
votes as of 6:26 p.m, with
75.39% of election returns
processed.
The actor’s opponent, Raneo
Abu of the Nacionalista Party, is ahead with 80,505
votes.

Actor Joey Marquez is trailing in the congressional race
in Paranaque’s second district.
Marquez, who is running as
an independent candidate,
had 39,381 votes as of 6:24
Leading the race is United
Nationalist Alliance (UNA)
bet Gus Tambunting with
46,917 votes.
A third candidate, Pacifico
Rosal, had 2,347 votes.
Marquez first served in public office as vice-mayor of
Paranaque from 1992 to
1995. He then served as
mayor until 2004.
LOSING
Christopher de Leon
Veteran actor Christopher
de Leon is behind the race to
represent Batangas City’s
second district. De Leon,
Jukebox Queen Imelda Papin
is headed for a loss in her
congressional bid in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
Papin, known for hits such
as “Isang Linggong Pag-Ibig,”
had 32,539 votes as of 6:25
The Liberal Party’s Arthur
Robes is leading the race
with 64,688 votes.
Annabelle Rama
Feisty talent manager and
Gutierrez matriarch Annabelle Rama ran for congresswoman in Cebu City’s first
district under the United
Nationalist Alliance. She only had 31,886 votes as of
6:27 p.m, with 87.45% of
election returns processed.
Raul del Mar of the Liberal
Party is leading the race
with 139,575 votes.

How Filipinos in Canada voted

VANCOUVER - It was a
shorter counting of ballots
for overseas absentee voting
across Canada. Partial unofficial results showed similar
tallies across the three posts
in the country: from the
Philippine embassy in Ottawa to the consular offices in
Toronto and Vancouver.
Senate veterans Alan Cayetano, Loren Legarda and
Chiz Escudero led the initial
tally. Koko Pimentel, Edgardo Angara Jr. and Ramon
Magsaysay Jr. were also in.
Similar to partial tallies back
home, newcomers Grace Poe
and Bam Aquino made it to
the list. Nancy Binay, however was at the bottom 20.
Other old-timers Antonio
Trillanes, Dick Gordon and
Gringo Honasan made it to
the top 12 in Canada and so
did Risa Hontiveros.
But like in the US, voter
turnout here was low.
Of 16,000 registered voters
in Toronto, less than 2,000
cast their votes.
Voter turnout was less than
10 percent in Vancouver,
with only 1,159 casting their
votes out of almost 13,000
registered voters — a disappointing outcome given the
convenience of the OAV process in Canada where postal
voting is allowed.
“It’s supposed to make it
easier and convenient but
I’m not sure what the reasons are, maybe they were

Rehearsals are now under way
for Francis’ Poulenc’s
“Dialogues des Carmelites at the
Four Seasons Centre for the
performing arts, which is produced by the Canadian Opera
Company (COC).
It is a story about an order of
Carmelite nuns, caught up in
the turmoil and terror of the
French Revolution. The opera
is composed of a cast of 150
performers directed by Robert
Carson and led by Canadian
stars such as famed operatic
chanteuse Isabel Bayrakdarian (as Blanche de la Force),
Judith Forst (Madame de Croissy) and Adrianne Pieczonka (as
Madame Lidoine)
Two Filipino-Canadian performers are part of this opera
production: Chyrell Samson
and Ray Jacildo (See photos).

Nana, passed away quietly on May 5, 2013 in Toronto. She's
mother to Waves News editor Tenny Soriano and four other
children, namely, Gustavo (Gus), Edgardo (Ed), Joselito (Ike)
and Jocelyn (Shoda). She was a former elementary school
teacher in her hometown of Amaya, Tanza, Cavite.

San Lorenzo Ruiz statue unveiled at Markham school

A Markham school named in
honour of San Lorenzo Ruiz
has scored a statue of the
iconic Filipino saint five
years after it opened.
The statue was unveiled at
the San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Elementary School during the Solemn Blessing and
Official Opening of New Addition celebrations held on
May 6, 2013.
The statue, a mid-size sculpture measuring 40" tall was
carved from plaster, according to its sculptor, artist Mogi Mogado. It stands atop a
32" pedestal that will be installed permanently to grace
the school's foyer area. "At
this height, it is at a comfortable eye-level that is
just perfect for the school
children to enjoy", he said.
His version of San Lorenzo
incorporates more of Filipino features, the artist explained. Its form was
adapted from the gigantic
monument that dominates
the San Lorenzo Park in
front of the Binondo Cathedral in the Philippines.
Unlike the common, generic version that looks anything but Filipino, Mogado
said he modeled it from a
Filipino priest from the local
St. Patrick's Church, who
was of part-Chinese facial
features, reflecting the lineage of San Lorenzo.

In blessing the statue
the officiating priest, Rev.
Chris Lemieux, said that
"idols and statues are primarily symbols of faith that
serve to facilitate the connection between the devotees and God."
He clarified that they are not
objects of veneration themselves. "Rather they are
the powerful intercessors
on our behalf. If I pray and
ask San Lorenzo and the
other saints to help me pray
to the Lord, in my faith I believe my prayer will have a
better chance to be heard
and answered," he said.

Mogado and Principal Teresa Lombardo who both did
the unveiling, were happy to
welcome the statue. The
statue was a gift to the
school jointly by Trustee
Mogado and the School
Council.
"With this statue I feel there
is a sense of closing the circle, a sort of giving wholeness to the school," Trustee
Mogado said. "When we talk
San Lorenzo to the kids, it
will be easier for them to
relate to the subject by visualizing him through the statue," she added.
Principal Lombardo was
most grateful as she
acknowledged the gift to her
school. "It's wonderful.
It will be like having the
blessed soul of San Lorenzo
pacing our corridors, his
presence among us in every
classroom and every school
activity," she said.
"Seeing the new statue will
instill more pride in being
Filipino. I feel that way, I'm
sure its the same with the
other
kababayans," remarked Madeleine Ong, a
Filipino lay church leader
active with the St. Patrick's
Church and the Block Ro-
sary Crusade of Toronto.
Among the honored guests
present were Director of
Education Patricia Preston,
and
Superintendent
of
Schools Nancy DiNardo,
both of the York Catholic
District School Board, and
Chair of the SLRCES Council
Nathalie Gonsalves.
San Lorenzo Ruiz is the beloved patron saint of Catholic Filipino migrants and
Overseas Foreign Workers
(OFWs). He was beatified by
Pope John Paul in Manila in
1981, and later canonized in
Rome in 1987 making him
the first saint from the Philippines.
At the San Lorenzo Ruiz CES
gym a satellite church mass,
part of the St. Patrick's Parish, is held at 10:15 every
Sunday morning. Since news
spread that there was a San
Lorenzo church here, devotees from neighboring communities have been flocking
to attend the masses, pushing the numbers of Filipino
attendees into the majority
among the congregation.

This year’s version of Filipino Making Waves Festival (FMW) at Dundas square on July—2013 will be a
different experience in a hockeycraze Toronto.
Old School Boxing Club, a trainer of

the festival to provide mainstream
young Canadians and ethnic groups
a sports activity as an alternative to
drugs and violence.
For the first time ever, Filipino Making Waves Festival will feature live
boxing bouts in the tradition of the
Golden Gloves where young and upcoming fighters ages 12-28 years
old will participate in a series of
fights that will be sanctioned by the
Amateur Boxing governing body of
Ontario.
The Hamilton-based “Old Boxing
School” club, in a letter to Teresa
Torralba said they wanted to develop amateur boxing in Ontario, at the
same time recognizing the fact that
the Filipino is a big boxing and
sports fan.

die from being too excited?
Yes. Excitement can trigger
heart attacks, cardiac arrest,
strokes, and other potentially
fatal medical emergencies.
Your body reacts to excitement in much the same way it
reacts to feelings of fear or
stress—by releasing the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. These stress hormones trigger what’s known
as the fight-or-flight response,
which primes people (and
animals) to face dangerous
situations. However, too
much adrenaline and noradrenaline can be dangerous to
the heart, brain, and other
organs. An enormous shock,
whether positive or negative,
can cause your heart to speed
up, beat irregularly, or stop.
In patients with pre-existing

fear of supernatural punishment, and ”broken-heart syndrome,” a cardiac abnormality

Filipinos likes fiestas. They
are
celebrated
all-year
round. All over the country,
especially in the summer
months, May is the merriest
and the most beautiful
month of the year. It is the
season of colorful festivals
and Flores de Mayo or Santacruzan is one such festival.
Stop and smell the roses.
During the month of May, in
the tropical islands of the
Philippines, we don't have to
stop -- the fragrance of flowers floats in the air. When
the rains begin to pour after
a long dry spell, flowers
magically bloom overnight.
And being predominantly
Catholic, the Filipinos celebrate the beneficial rains by
giving praise to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. The townfolk
gather the colorful flowers
to decorate the Parish
Church altars and aisles.
They bundle the blooms in
exotic arrangements for the
many different festivities all
together referred to as the
"Flores De Mayo" (Flowers
of May). Many towns celebrate Flores De Mayo with
the community congregating
in the afternoons to pray the
rosary, offer flowers to the
Virgin Mary, and share
homemade delicacies and
snacks. Children and adults
wearing their Sunday best
sing and dance to welcome
the rains that will water the
new crops.

selected to participate in
this colorful pageant parade.
The stars are selected not
for their looks alone, but for
their embodiment of traditional feminine qualities. It
is a week-long street pageant in almost every town;
from the dirt road barrio to
the metropolis honoring
beautiful Philippine maidens
and their handsome escorts
under the hand-carried
bamboo arc’s decorated by
fragrant native flowers.
May is also the month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin
Mary, mother of Christ. Filipinos turn each of the 31
days in May into a charming
honor to the virginal virtues
in Flores de Mayo, the flowers of May fiesta. Spiritual
virtue searches to reach
even the young. Every day in
May, children, with cut flowers and baskets of petals in
hand, march down the
church center aisle. As the
children march down the
aisle they sprinkle the fragrant petals for Mama Mary.
This custom is called alay sa
Birhen. In Filipino, because
it is an offering (alay) to the
virgin (birhen), at the main
altar, the youngsters sing
hymns to Lady Immaculate,
and leave their bouquet of
flowers loose and dethroned.

was originally performed by
Luther Vandross.
"Last week, I saw this video
of a young singer. He's from
the Philippines and you got
to see this kid, amazing,"

"How beautiful is that. That

'Hospitality' is what drives
tourists to PH

MANILA – Tourist arrivals to
the Philippines reached an all
-time high of at 1.27 million
in the first quarter of 2013.

Pilipinas," said Tourism Assistant Secretary Bong Bengzon.
Korea is the leading tourist

of national hero Jose Rizal
are the tourists' favorite
places to visit when they are
in Manila.
"Ang Rizal Park kasi, kumbaga sa New York, mayroon
silang Statue of Liberty. Ang
Rizal Monument ang icon ng
Pilipinas," said Kenneth Montegrande, spokesperson of
the National Parks Development Committee.
Tourists from the United
States are the second largest
group, while the Japanese
ranked third. The other leading markets are China, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore
and Canada.
An increase in tourist arrivals means more jobs for Filipinos working at the tourism
sector.

MANILA -- More than the
white-sand beaches and aweinspiring caves, it is the Filipinos' attitude toward visitors
that is most liked by tourists
who flocked the country, the
National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said.
In the latest issue of Beyond
the Numbers, NSCB Secretary
General Jose Ramon G. Albert
said more than half or 52.6%
of foreign visitors in 2012
said the warm hospitality and
kindness of the Filipino people made it to the top of their
list of things they like most
about the Philippines.
Beautiful scenery and nice
beaches only came in second
(at 22.6%), while good food,
liquor, and fruits was ranked
third (9.9%).
Albert also noted the tourists
favored being able to see
their friends and loved ones
in the Philippines (8.7%), and
see the country as a good
place to relax (4.5%).
However, with regard to
what tourists dislike the most
in the Philippines, 24.6% said
it was the heavy traffic in the
country.
This was followed by pollution and dirty environment
(17.3%), poverty and beggars
(7.8%), and bad weather
(4.7%).
Visitor arrivals last year
breached the 4-million mark
for the first time at 4.27 million, although it fell short of
the government's target of
attracting 4.5 million tourists.
Almost a fourth or 24.1% of
the visitors came from Korea,
while 15.3% were from the
US, and 9.6% hailed from Japan.
The government eyes to welcome 5.5 million tourists this
year and eventually attract
10 million visitors by 2016.
"The national government,
local governments, and the
private sector should work
hand in hand to attain the
targets in the tourism sector
and be able to contribute immensely to inclusive growth
and employment generation,"
Albert said.
However, he stressed that
ecological aspects and issues
should also be addressed
while promoting the tourism
sector as a driver of economic
growth.
"So if you are a local tourist,
you are not just relaxing or
enjoying the fun and adventures, you are also contributing to the economy. I am
hoping that more of our tycoons...can significantly invest in making this country
more marketable not only to
foreign tourists, but to local
tourists as well," Albert said.
This, as domestic travelers in
2011 reached 21.03 million
or 21% higher than the previous year.
"I also hope that our hotels
can try to be more competitive with their accommodation costs as total revenues
are a sum of unit prices multiplied by quantities. These
hotels can certainly bring
down their costs and get
more volume, and still yield a
nifty profit," Albert continued.

Pacquiao is 6th highest earning non-US athlete

into Sports Illustrated's
"International 20" that
listed the highest paid nonAmerican athletes in the
world.
The Filipino superstar was
ranked sixth among his
peers, despite having only
one fight within Sports Illus-

coach Freddie Roach hinted
that he may have to ask Manny
Pacquiao to retire if the Filipino boxer loses his bout against
Mexico’s Brandon “Bam Bam”

In an interview with Ring TV’s
Lem Satterfield, Roach described Pacquiao’s foe as a
hungry fighter who belongs to
the newer generation of boxers.
“The thing is that Rios is a very
tough fighter, and I feel that
he's very strong and he's from
the younger generation coming up, and Manny's from the
older generation,” said
Pacquiao’s coach.
He added that the Rios bout
will serve as a tough test for
Pacquiao, who will be coming
off a sixth round knockout
defeat at the hands of Juan
Manuel Marquez.
If Pacquiao loses to the Mexican brawler, Roach said it
could mean the end of
Pacquiao’s boxing career.
“So it's kind of a test for both
guys. The winner will go on to
bigger and better things, and
the loser will be maybe finished.”
Meanwhile, Roach said
Pacquiao’s long layoff from
boxing should serve the
fighting congressman well.
The Filipino boxer initially
wanted to fight again in April,
but the coach wanted
Pacquiao to take some time off
from the ring.
“I think that [Pacquiao] needed some time off after you get
knocked out like that. I think

soon sometimes, and it's usually for a bad result,” Roach
said of his fighter’s recent loss.

‘Glee.’ Being here and actually seeing them in person, I
did get star-struck. It’s crazy. I see them on TV all the
time. It feels weird,” she
said.
The American Idol runnerup was first seen on “Glee”
last April 26 (Manila time)
although it was only for a
few seconds.

80’s Concert
a huge success!
Brings out groove in crowd!
It wasn’t a Standing Room Only
venue, and yet the audience were
on their feet from the first time
Back to ‘80s concert artists Gino
Padilla, Joey Albert and Raymond
Lauchengco appeared on stage
up to their finale songs. Everybody was singing and dancing in
high spirits reliving the music
and memories of the ‘80s.
The seamless production ensured that the audience enjoyed
the night away with the ‘80s pop
and jazz icons of Original Pilipino
Music(OPM) talking center stage
at the Global Kingdom Ministries
on May 4, 2013.
To add to the audiences’ excitement, concert producers Bodybliss and Primetime Events
Group formally launched their
winter 2013 project Allegiance, a
new American musical, in Broadway, New York which stars multi
-awarded actress and mezzosoprano singer Lea Salonga.
The show started with an ‘80s
medley performed by students
from the JDL School of Performing Arts. Toronto talent Anna
Estrada-Rejante continued the
‘80s music renditions and the
audience had already warmed up
by the time Gino Padilla set foot
on stage who
sang his hit song
Joey’s backdrop. An unexpected
but heartwarming surprise was
the Bakit Ngayon ka Lang duet
between American Geo Bryja and
Joey. Geo was born and raised in
Detroit Michigan and is married
to Gin, a Filipina. He loves Filipino songs and can sing them fluently even in the Visayan and
Ilocano dialects.
Fans of the stars of the ‘80s teen
movie Bagets were awed by the
performance of debonair Raymond Lauchengco, whose song
selections included Just Got
Lucky and graduation song Fare-
Let the Love

which added flavor to his repertoire.
Meanwhile,
